Q: A call to arms for the Gaming blog!

Ivo FlipseI'm looking for help from users who want to help breath new life into the Gaming blog! On Super User we got officially blessed by Jeff and I honestly believe that Gaming should be able to deserve one as well. On Super User we mainly started out with Questions of the Week, which help create a ste...

10:18 PM
@TomWijsman interested?

@IvoFlipse: A bit busy these days, just adding the room to my favorites so I can catch up.
I don't know what I would write about, still have to finish my SU blog posts and have other work to do.

fair enough

Portal 2 releases in the middle of my two-week vacation, so that might be an option. :)

yeah there's no rush
I just need to get some users who can post at least one post per 2 weeks

Planning on trying to non-TAS speed run Portal 2, is there interest in speed runs in the Gaming.SE community (besides the TAS videos that show up on the chat)?

10:27 PM
sure, if only because then you will be able to review the game itself as well :P

Was fun back then to finish Portal 1 in sub-20 minutes.

@Mana are you willing to give it another shot?

I need to pick back up with StarCraft II, around and after exams I went to play team games more and fun games afterwards.
Should get my 2v2 to >50 rank tomorrow before the new season starts and then play 1v1s again in the new season, I'm really glad they removed the loss/game counts as it's discouraging to play further when having a bad moment...

room topic changed to Gaming Blog Editor room: Wherein we leverage the leak power from our lazers to do this bloggy stuff everybody's so excited about.

And off course @ThomasMcDonald loves gaming as well ;P

10:34 PM
CAN YOU FEEL THE EXCITEMENT

I can :P
Powerlord should expand more on Team Fortress 2

Maybe a link to the blog wouldn't suck

@TomWijsman There's no such thing as a Portal TAS btw
TASing proper has only barely started doing DOS games...

We should also set up a Meta post for Question of the Week, to get in the habit of it
And hopefully somebody doesn't pick one of the essay answers, because those tend to be pretty complete
And I expect @tzenes to write a nice report on TLS
and I hope @GraceNote writes a nice story about her visit to PAX
Then we'll have to promote our pathetic attempt at Gaming together
@failbadp is already working on a draft
and Lucas McCoy has a draft up about Minecraft modding

Yeah, protip: save early, save often

who says we can't get anything written for this thing?

The editor does autosave drafts, but only once in a while (like 15 mins)

so @Mana what do you want to write about?

10:40 PM
I was thinking a review of Bulletstorm to start @Ivo

oeh I like it
perhaps you can convince me to try it

Q: Why do console games require a button press before showing the main menu?

SejanusI am strictly a PC gamer myself, but I noticed a strange thing. When you start every released-for-console game, like Mass Effect or Borderlands, they ask you to press Enter (or any key, etc.) after the initial load, and only after pressing it do you get to see the main menu. PC-only games load th...

@failbadp There sure is, host_timescale is a nice start. :)

This is a nice example of blog worthy question: why we have that stupid button in the first place? lot's of short answers that beg to be eloborated

Q: What is kiting?

BlakeWhat does the term 'kiting' mean when used for games? I've seen the term thrown around here and there in reference to a few different games. Are there specific types of games that it applies to?

This post can be used to show awesome examples of kiting

Q: Why is it so difficult to emulate PS2 games in a PS3?

ItherI know that PS2 games can only be played in a 'fat' PS3 with the right hardware to run it. But why is so difficult to emulate a PS2 game in the PS3 without that hardware? Is the processor, the architecture, both? Thanks in advance.

A bit more technical
Btw @failbadp your question about over and over and over again, is great for a blog post as well

@IvoFlipse Yes I do.

You get to rant, while still being on topic

I struggle to write at length, though. :)

well if you write up a draft, others can help expand it ;)
and I helped drag a whole post out of Mark Szymanski too :P the only with cd..

Q: Trouble getting to sleep after gaming session

DavidIf I've played for about an hour or two directly before going to bed I have trouble getting to sleep. Images of the game are still in my head and it takes some time before I can find some sleep. However, this doesn't happen with all types of games - adventure and racing games seem ok whereas firs...

Q: Is this email claiming to be from Blizzard legit?

ColenI just got an email: Dear Players, Take a trip back to Azeroth with 7 days of FREE game time! Simply click below to claim your time and experience all of the latest improvements and additions to World of Warcraft®... but act fast, as this offer will expire on Mar 22, 2011. It looks in...

Q: What mistakes cost you games when you were Bronze/Silver

Joe BehymerI realize this may sound silly, but in the poker game Holdem many of the top pros have said it is much harder to beat a bad player than a good one, because of the crazy random stuff a newbie will do. I'm a bronze leaguer myself, and I've taken many of the ideas from various casts and this site a...

Q: Should I group together or spread out tanks in siege mode?

OakIf I group my siege tanks together they cover less area and once melee units get to them they all become helpless together; but on the other hand if I spread them around they're easier to surround and their friendly fire is really devestating. When should I group my siege tanks together, and whe...

Run for cover or team hugging, Starcraft 2 style?
seriously guys, this site has so much more gems then SU, its just ridiculous
and this is just from the past month
anyway, I now have to get my ass to bed, so I'll talk to y'all soon

@TomWijsman That's not quite enough, what about save states, frame by frame input and input "movie" editing? :)
And the whole reproducibility stuff

Q: What tools are available for managing/writing to WordPress?

EAMannAside from the actual WordPress dashboard, what tools are available for writing posts, moderating comments, and otherwise administering your site? Please identify whether you're referencing a desktop tool, a web-based tool, or a mobile tool.

@failbadp Just saving should be sufficient, there is barely something randomly generated in Portal as far as I know of. Frame by frame input can be achieved by binding two pauses with a short wait in between if you are performing yourself or just send a key each frame (with a lower host_timescale and a fixed FPS it's not hard to send an input each frame). These inputs you send from your external tool can then be edited to your like, perhaps even be captured from your manual input.
But I agree that it's easier on DOS / 2D games, you can't easily add AI heuristics in 3D games either which in some cases might be necessary to find an (near-)optimal solution...
Hmm, another trick could be to work with breakpoints on the buffer swap and capturing the game's memory if it's unsupported by the game itself. Nasty... xD

11:00 PM
@failbadp I'm loving how your post currently ends.

But that might take a very long time because such games run at a faster frame rate, perhaps you could send input each X frames and still manage to finish the game in a near-optimal time.

Trying to remember which iseries it was I went to.

11:32 PM
Whoops. Your design pretty much requires me to use that evil splitter thingadongdong

user30
@failbadp Elaborate?

@ThomasMcDonald I didn't put the _____MORE thing in the post, so the post displayed in its entirety on the homepage (as desired) but then I still had a link to "READ MORE →"
So I gave up and put the _______MORE splitter thing.

user30
Oh right. You could use the excerpt box?

user30
Oh, does it show by default? I can't remember if it's disabled or if I removed it for me.

11:50 PM
So I've spent a few minutes trying to update the feed reader on the new RSS url
