@GrahamPerrin I see it as hi lighting the current item, but in all honesty, I don't even look at the titles anymore. If the content isn't what I want, I tap / click in that area to swap things.

@bmike perfect. Thanks. Your honesty is an almost seamless fit with a likely explanation for the repellent effect that Yosemite had on me. My lazy explanation for now (it's past midnight, bedtime for me) is …
People See Different – sometimes major differences. My way of seeing should be treated as neither better, nor worse, than any other person's way. Critically: Apple has effectively bulldozed through changes in appearance that make using a Mac with Yosemite a distinctly unpleasant experience for some of the people who See Different.
Maybe the politest way for me to express my reaction to Yosemite: Apple's approach made a mockery of Think Different and some of the other most special eras in the company's past. Without breaking confidentiality, I can say that some of what I saw, pre-release, almost defied belief; those parts were extraordinarily far removed from the Apple that had previously inspired confidence and respect.
(Passers-by to this chat will probably be unfamiliar with my background, a background that predates Ask Different by some years. Suffice to say: the few people who are suitably familiar will know that it's completely uncharacteristic of me to be so critical of Apple's work. These are not knee-jerk reactions; I have done my best to react in the most rational way to the most irrational parts of Apple's work. I'm truly sorry to say, A sad thirtieth anniversary for the Mac.)

@GrahamPerrin I really appreciate your criticism and explanation of how the yosemite design really doesn't work for you.
It's always fascinating to see what is most important to different people in their tool use.

@bmike LOL at myself for going off on one after intending a (lazy) one-line explanation :-)
@bmike … but I did refrain from mentioning what may prove to be two keywords within an explanation:
@bmike (1) saccades
… and (2) dyslexia
