i need help making my login screen work on the Pi with Raspbian.:( When I click log off on the GUI it brings me to a terminal instead of a login screen.

3 hours later…
6:45 PM
@EinsteinJr. please join me in chat
@goldilocks care to join us

7:15 PM
I am I in the correct chat room for my question
I mean "Am I"*
Is anyone here?

@SteveRobillard Yeah -- this is the main, ongoing chatroom for the site. Hopefully Steve didn't dose off.

I am here

@EinsteinJr. Sorry that message was for you, just poking Steve.

@EinsteinJr. I wanted to talk with you regarding your questions and general site usage
Have you read the FAQ

Where is the FAQ? Do you mean this:

yes
I have read them and did the Tour, etc

So why did you post your most recent question to this site versus the 2 mentioned by @goldilocks in his comment

sorry i dont understand the question

While I am using this latest question as an example my point applies to many of your questions
what made you think that your question was on topic per the FAQ

Which Question?

7:21 PM
or any one of the others that have been closed, put on hoild or migrated to another SO site

@EinsteinJr. I think you need to hone some of your research & comprehension skills. E.g., I'm sure I've tried to explain before about what the "desktop environment" is, and the "display manager", which controls the login screen. But you seem to have forgotten the point...namely, that these are independent pieces of software which are used beyond Raspbian.

So if you are trying to figure them out, you need to consult their docs, research them by name, etc.
Then if there's something you don't understand, you have something to reference, rather than just saying, "I want to do this but it does not work".

While we are chatting there is another issue in general with your questions
A quick search of Google google.com/… or google.com/…
would have turned up several alternatives to your question
If you want others to help you, you should show that you have made an effort to help yourself.

Ok...I'll keep that in mind. Sorry!

7:25 PM
The more you dig for stuff, the better you get at it. It's a skill.

+1 for practice makes betteer

It's an really important skill WRT programming and working w/ computers. Fortunately, the people behind the internet have a lot of knowledge there ;)

it is also important in live and our relationsjips to others
a couple of quick questions how old are you and what is your first language

your right! So, Ill try to do more research before asking questions!

Here's maybe an illustration: 80%+ of the questions I sit down to ask on S.E. never get asked, because in the process of writing them, dotting my i's, crossing my t's, making sure everything relevant is explained, etc., I find the solution myself.

7:28 PM
might I suggest before posting you ask yourself is this something specific to the Pi.

67 and primary language is English
I am getting it...I see your point.

as the first question
We are not truing to alienate or offend you instead we are as the old saying goes teaching you to fish vs giving you a fish.
off topic/poor quality questions hurt everyone who uses the site.
FWIW your username does not help

what does FWIW mean?
sorry not good at internet lingo

fo what it is worth
no problem just trying to save some typing

There's a lot of stuff to get frustrated about, but again, the more you get used to reading particular forms of technical documentation, the easier it becomes. Don't throw up your hands until you are really, really frustrated. Keep in mind the Q&A economy is basically: a lot more people ask questions than answer them. This makes sense -- it's because expertise is acquired slowly -- but that's why we're very stickly about forcing people to do things a certain way.

7:32 PM
@goldilocks to add to what goldilocks said you will also get more satisfaction out of it.

got it

by all means keep posting questions but post them to the right place and show some initiative and effort in to self educatrion
thats all i have
@goldilocks anything else

OK. I will. What were you saying about my username? I should change it?

Oh your username is fine, lol. We just thought you were a kid.

that is up to you but put yourself in our place. what do you think of someone who repeatedly asks offtopic or poorly thought out questions with your username

7:35 PM
Haha...

or someone named Einstein who asked how to do basic math

yea i guess

it is entirely up to you but the name does set the expectation rightly or wrongly

Anyway, to re-iterate the point about the Q&A economy: We want you to make it as easy as possible for us ("us" being the potential A half of Q&A). Just because something is free does not mean there are unlimited resources available.

you are not the only one that this effects AwesomeUser or RPi Awesomeness
my first thought is always if you are so awesome then why do you need my help

7:37 PM
@SteveRobillard Well, what's in a name?

again rightly or wrongly

right will do my best to do that. Haha ok.

the nature of your questions is by far the bigger issue

@goldilocks lol
thank you for your time and understanding
both of you

7:38 PM
I dunno if I pointed you to this before:

Thank you for pointing it out!
to what?

"How to Ask Questions the Smart Way" is like, a historical document in the evolution of the internet.

@goldilocks all it needs is its own rfc

Put another way, it has had a lot of influence, or reflected a lot about the technical community since usenet days.

usenet wow we are on the way back train
next your going to reference a gopher site

7:41 PM
haha

My big issue when I started looking for comp. sci. help online was perceiving people as "mean".
Anyway, it's a culture, and that doc is a pretty good explanation of why it is the way it is. You don't have to read all of it, but it is worth glancing over and taking various bits to heart.

speak for yourself I am mean and i do bite

ok will do!

Yes I know Steve.

@Steve Robillard: haha your funny!

7:43 PM
i have the deleted posts and mod flags to prove it

I'm constantly realizing how I've become "that insensitive jerk", lol.

well now that you have admitted it there are only 11 more steps
at internet trolls anonymous

what
whats that?

unless there is anything else I am going to finish my work

Yes there is a long list of insensitive jerks I have to go and apologies to now: "I understand finally you really were trying to help".

7:45 PM
it is a joke on alcoholics annonymous

Take it easy Steve.

lol
ok...are we all settled

Sound good. I don't want to see you back here again young man!
[Joke]

lol
ok, so long!
and ill change my user name ;)
