Q: Should I read Oryx and Crake before The Year of the Flood?

I recently got my hands on a copy of The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Reading its description on Wikipedia, I realized that it's set in the same universe as one of her previous novel, Oryx and Crake. Would I miss anything important if I don't read the latter novel first?

And the problem is, I have no way of knowing what the scope will look like on a pistol, launcher, assault rifle, etc.
