Ouya breaking some ground: joystiq.com/2012/08/02/…

I have studied the problem of Gnomeregan in detail. If you clear the level 1-30 occupying force, you just pave the way for level 200 stonetrogg Titans to take the city.

@DavidB Hrm, those would be even worse when irradiated, I bet.

@RilgonArcsinh absolutely, so the gnomes are saving Azeroth by inaction in this case.

Shog9 on August 02, 2012

Holy smokes… It’s been over three and a half years since Jeff recruited Valued Associate #00002 to work full-time on building Stack Overflow. In that time, a lot has changed. Jeff’s moved on to teasing us with his next project, Jarrod’s gone from spending his days knee-deep in code to managing the Core dev team and being big in Japan. And there are now 60 full-time employees of Stack Exchange, many hired from within the communities on our sites.

It’s been far too many months since we last introduced any of them, which is a real shame – these folks work hard k …

@DavidB ... oh well. The antics of primitive old-school level-based DIKUs. How drool. :)

3:11 PM
None of these people have Arqade flair :-(

Jin
@QAdley they're obviously not as kewl

user2334
hot pizza hot pizza hot pizza

The World Needed This.

@LessPop_MoreFizz BRB suggesting Grimaldi's to Tink for dinner tonight.

3:14 PM
I approve of this plan.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The top one looks like a Jabba The Hutt Pizza

@QAdley have you not seen Spaceballs?

Given that it's your fault I know about the place in general, you would approve of it.

That's Pizza the Hut.

@LessPop_MoreFizz N....no...

3:14 PM
... FIX THIS. NOW.

Seconded.

I'm sorry!
Too busy watching the olympalocalypse

Are they on to the Men's Meteor Dodging yet, @QAdley?

@RilgonArcsinh If you mean Canoe Slalom, then yes

3:16 PM
Six of one~

@LessPop_MoreFizz At work, too bust watching the Olympics to watch this...

@LessPop_MoreFizz Pizza the hutt!

Oh yeah, Breaking Bad finished downloading at long last...

@pixel I am intrigued by this show, should I start watching it?

3:19 PM
I don't know, I only downloaded it

@QAdley Probably one of the best shows of the last 10 years
But you need to watch from the beginning

@QAdley I watch speedrunners at work. I'm not sure how that compares in the grand scheme of things.

@tiddy Cool. I'll start torrenting forthwith.

Im serious about starting from the beginning

It's sat in D:\Downloads\Unsorted\Breaking Bad\

3:19 PM
Criminey, I hate Sharepoint Designer now. Stupid thing absolutely loves to add in extra code to "help". And there's no way I know of to make it stop doing that.

The character arcs are what make it great

I didn't even get around to moving it to the correct location

@tiddy Oh I would

The first season is only 7-8 eps anyway

@fbueckert There are reasons to not hate Sharepoint? I am confused.

3:20 PM
@tiddy Almost as short as a British show!

Somebody told me to start watching Continuum

Yeah, the rest hit 12-13

@RilgonArcsinh I get paid lots of money to use it?

but from the episodes I've seen so far it seems to epitomise everything I hate about TV

@pixel you're gonna fucking love Breaking Bad.

3:21 PM
Season 3 is where I think it "hits", and the payoff still gives me chills

@pixel Eh? I've found Continuum to be quite good.

@fbueckert I hate people who host Minecraft servers, and I make money off them. :P

@fbueckert yeah but the first season is what... 10 episodes? the story is far too slow paced for that
It's like very little has actually been covered so far

(or, well, the subset of the ones I personally have to deal with at work)

I would love one of those suits though

3:22 PM
@tiddy the moment that hooked me was the first 'Heisenberg' confrontation with Tuco.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I shall watch some tonight and see

I swear, the next time I hear someone streaming their head off (textually) about how "MY PVP SERVER IS LAG NEED 32GB OF RAM NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!"...

Uggggggh waiting 2+ hours for return calls from support is an awful way to spend a morning.

@LessPop_MoreFizz My moment was the "Heisenberg/Jesse/Bronco" scene
You know the one

@LessPop_MoreFizz Tell your support team to man up and get a 10 minute SLA like mine. :P

3:23 PM
@pixel Oh. The first season is only ten episodes. This makes me sad.

@RilgonArcsinh I need more context before I find the obvious humour in this statement

@RilgonArcsinh That's a thousand dollar install fee, thanks!

@pixel Angry dude from the UK flipping his shit because his PVP Minecraft server is "laggy" because it "only" has 16GB of RAM

@fbueckert well the silly watermarks all over the completely legitimate copies I found on the intarwebs said "season finale: next week" on them

@rilgon it's 3 dudes in Chicago supporting a worldwide operation. I give then some slack.

3:24 PM
(and a E3-1280V2)

@RilgonArcsinh my desktop computer only has 16gb of RAM, he must be doing something wrong.

@pixel That's what IMDB shows, too.

@pixel The most that Supermicro's X9-based E3 motherboards supports is 32GB, but that requires 8GB unbuffered ECC modules which are out of stock damn near everywhere

er is was an aztec

@pixel Mostly I just hate the guy because he throws a damn hissy fit about everything.

3:25 PM
@fbueckert assuming you've watched them all already, the contents of episode 9 would work very well to build tension, but since there were 8 episodes of story and 1 episode of explosions, and next episode is the last of the season, I feel a little let down
@RilgonArcsinh Customers do that.

@pixel You mean, you want MORE explosions? I thought the whole time travel exploration was done pretty well.

@pixel Sane, functioning humans do not throw a hissyfit because you took more than 4 hours to generate special pricing on a one-off special order for an enterprise-class PCI-express SSD :P
(our normal turn-around time for pricing for one-off requests is 2 weeks, as clearly stated in our SLA)

Especially the, "Killing the grandmother of one of the time travellers, but he's still here" bit. That puts some interesting story into it.
@RilgonArcsinh I hope you charged him for it.

@fbueckert I thought the time travel thing was average, it pays none of the usual respect to causality and everybody acts way too comfortably with the fact a futuristic police officer got sucked back in time and exposed to the inventor of the technology that it works and is successful, before continually distracting him from actually creating it

and yes, this guy wanted a PCI-express enterprise SSD for Minecraft

3:28 PM
@RilgonArcsinh Any user that expected me to get something done right freaking now automatically gets charged double to triple my usual rates.

Its obvious they're coming from the angle that time travel causes a duplication of the universe at the point that you arrive but without the assumption that every cause has an effect you loose a lot of the drama

@fbueckert Nah, he withdrew the request after 8 hours ("god if you can't get a quote in 8 hours then just forget it and give me the Intel 710"), and our company is allergic to telling people no.

@RilgonArcsinh There's a difference between saying no, and going, "Alright, that'll cost X".

@RilgonArcsinh I disagree, I deal with sane, "functioning" people every day. Doctors, nurses, and surgeons, people trained to save lives, but the second they experience an issue with anything our application does that isn't even relevant to their day to day job we get <random PA> shouting at my support team

user15026
@fbueckert There is a new kairosoft game out today. Kairobotica. (mind you I am still playing Dungeon Village and Pocket Clothier and Sushi Spinnery, but I totally bought it anyway.)

3:30 PM
@AshleyNunn ...Dammit. I haven't even finished a single game of Sushi Spinnery yet.

@fbueckert Our sales people give people discounts because they spew made-up sob stories in tickets, they'd have a coronary trying to charge people because they were inconsiderate jerks. :P

@RilgonArcsinh New rule! Sales team and technical team change jobs for a day. End result: Less sympathy for morons!

(no joke, we gave a guy a $30 discount on a ~250 dollar server because he claimed it was "making it so i cant feed my cat :(")
and now you know why my liver is a blackened, grizzled core of hate

@RilgonArcsinh I think you just inspired me to tell another horror story of my last job.

@RilgonArcsinh Cats?

user15026
3:31 PM
@fbueckert neither have I but I couldn't help getting it anyhow. See this is how you do it, folks - Kairosoft doesn't use microtransactions (at least for all English localized games so far) yet their games are awesome.

@QAdley Well, stupid customers in general, but yes, we'll go with cats.

@RilgonArcsinh So why didn't you guys send him a monthly supply of catfood? It would be cheaper.

user15026
@fbueckert it is alarming that you have a seemingly endless supply of these stories.

@MartinSojka I brought that up during a monthly meeting and received a reprimand for being "insensitive".

@AshleyNunn I'll second that

3:33 PM
Ok, so, as part of my job, I wasn't just the programmer. I was the resident techie. If it involved anything computerized it was my job.

I even offered to spring for Fancy Feast, the good crap

@fbueckert Is like the whole of TDWTF all by himself

Anyways, one of our current clients administered tests to the public for licensing junk.
Since we provided translation services, they sent us their test, so we could translate it into multiple languages.

Oh boy.

Turns out, the whole damn thing was done in freaking Excel.
There was a button that randomized the questions, and the answer order. Problem was, to print out 100 tests, you'd print, press the button, print again, etc.
Amazingly enough, my company was OK with that. They'd spend an employee's entire day to just print stuff out like this.
I got involved when they actually needed to add the translations into the test.
Nobody understood how the stupid thing worked, and copying and pasting another language had some...unfortunate consequences on the randomization button.
So, I got to fix it.
The way it worked was...horrible, to say the least.

3:39 PM
It was Excel-based, that much is self-evident.
(If you tell me it had an Access back-end I will drink myself into a coma.)

I kept the basic structure, because they had all the formatting and everything, but otherwise, I punted it out the window.
To strip it down and bypass technical details, I checked questions into a new worksheet, and answers into another one; right answer in column A for question in row X.
The randomization then just pulled random questions with their answers and dumped it into the form.
Streamlined it so you'd just tell it how many copies you wanted, press the button, and it would regenerate and print until it hit the requisite number of copies.
Turned a day job into about five minutes.

@fbueckert And eliminated someone's job! Evil.

But, getting back to the translation part, by separating the formatting from the questions themselves, it turned a nightmare job of having to re-format whenever you needed a new language dumped in, you just needed to copy and paste.
@StrixVaria That's IT's job. If you're creating MORE work for someone, you're doing it wrong.
Besides, the employee loved me for doing that. She had tons more to do than just that.

Q: Why do I need steam to play Fallout?

Connor PalmerI Just bought Fallout: New Vegas today on amazon for the computer and I am dying to play it, but for some reason it made me install it on steam and is now updating the game which it says will take 5 hours. Is there any way to bypass this?

So, this spreadsheet is just ticking along, doing it's job just fine. Never heard about it while I was still at the company.
About a couple weeks after I left, I hear they wanted to re-purpose it for another task.
The Useless Office Politics Guy I told you about decides, "Hey, I know how that works! I can change it!"
Even worse, I understand he was bragging to employees around that he made this spreadsheet, and how awesome it worked.
For the most part, I don't really care; I left, and good riddance.

3:47 PM
The title of the spreadsheet I'm maintaining of new apartment possibilities seems apropos: GET OUT.xls

But then he spent something like an hour and a half trying to re-purpose this thing.
And, somehow, in the process, he fubared it royally. It stopped working entirely. I have no idea how he managed that at all.

There human stupidity knows no limits.

Three sheets: Formatting, questions, answers. Tweak formatting slightly, copy paste questions and answers. Hit button, randomized tests served!
Luckily, they had a backup kicking around somewhere, otherwise I (or a current hapless employee) would have had to re-write it.
But, yeah. Most of my stories can be summed up as, "Useless office politics guy thinks he knows more than he does, and screws up something royally."
2

That can sum up the business world in general, honestly.

That one's not nearly as good as most of the rest, but is at least a minor WTF.
Remind me to tell you guys about some of our on call stories later.
Have I told the one about where I got the written letter of warning?

3:54 PM
@fbueckert I don't think so.

good evening people

@RonanForman Alright. Somebody remind me to tell you that one later. Tomorrow or the weekend.
Also, if anyone is interest any MORE of my horror stories, there are a couple links in my profile. Can't seem to find any others, so if you can link them, I'll add them in.

I wonder if posting all of these stories on workplace.se is on topic

4:10 PM
@pixel Area51 suggestion for "Should I murder my coworker" SE in 3...?

@RilgonArcsinh no of course not, the answer to murder is always "no"
"public humiliation with intent to provoke suicide" is a different story I agree
but murder... always a no

user15026
Okay. Someone remind me that the upcoming Harvest Moon game for 3DS will not be as awesome as the N64 game, and I shouldn't buy it, despite preorders coming with the CUTEST little stuffed yak toy. Because I will paly it for maybe an hour, remember why I miss HM64, and trade it in.

Fair enough

@AshleyNunn I need to play Harvest moon.

@AshleyNunn You will trade the game in and quickly regret your decision. On the other hand, how frequently do you have a shot at a stuffed yak?

4:12 PM
@AshleyNunn I hear the new Harvest Moon game for the 3DS is not as good as the N64 game

user15026
@RilgonArcsinh See, this is a problem!

At least you know I'll do exactly what I'm told, rather than the opposite

@pixel I like to take their suggestions literally. "You want me do what?" Proceeds to do exactly like they told me to do

user15026
@RonanForman Do it, but I really do recommend playing one of the older ones. HM64 if you can find it. :)

@fbueckert I've done that before, my manager thought I was taking the piss

4:13 PM
@rilgon that SE exists.

@AshleyNunn googles

@AshleyNunn Clearly the solution is a carefully constructed analysis of opportunity costs. Is the Yak worth $DOLLAR_PRICE_OF_GAME minus $GROSSLY_DEPRECIATED_GAMESTOP_TRADE_VALUE?

made it all the way to tribunal before they realised that I was being serious

user15026
@RilgonArcsinh Not so much, but it is SO cute. And then it and the llama I got for preordering the last one could sit and be friends.

user15026
4:14 PM
(As you can see, this is not a new problem)

posts "Under what circumstance(s) is it acceptable to murder everybody in your office"

@AshleyNunn Llama/yak diplomatic relations are hard to put a dollar figure on.

user15026
@RilgonArcsinh This is SO true.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Is this in response to the fact that my SO subscription e-mails are always filled with "how do I deal with my employer?" questions?

I'm pretty sure your Diplomatic Adviser would suggest that the trade is worth it.

4:14 PM
Also, I totally preordered Rocket Slime when it came out for a blue slime keychain. So getting harvest moon for stuffed yak seems like a no brained.

At least you are not giving up a luxury.
Gold is replaceable, luxuries are forever 30 turns.

@AshleyNunn Do you want me to make you a plush llama?

@AshleyNunn Buy for Yak

user15026
@RonanForman I have a llama, I need a yak. :)

user15026
@GraceNote YOU ARE NOT HELPING OMG flails

4:16 PM
I have a GiR, I don't need any other plushies

I'll make you a yak then, but I'm not sending it to you.

@AshleyNunn Buy for Yak

@LessPop_MoreFizz The amount of business lingo in a single post in there is enough to make me go screaming into the night

I have a plush Carbuncle, but he's really too delicate for snuggling like a normal plushie, so he sits on a bookcase.

omg. I thought you left @pixel??

user15026
4:17 PM
@RonanForman It can be like...an international diplomat yak.

user15026
@GraceNote auuuuuuuuuuuugh. Have you seen the yak? Because OMG so cute.

@RilgonArcsinh Final Fantasy Carbuncle, Puyo Puyo Carbuncle, or...?

@James I'm part right as well, but I don't see how it is relevant to this greeting... I haven't decided to stay either

@AshleyNunn Buy for Yak

2.5 hours without a return call now. Wheeeeee.

4:17 PM
@AshleyNunn @RonanForman The Vatican seeks a Great Yak?

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Man, Rocket Slime was a gooood game.

@pixel Yup now I am instantly confused :)

@GraceNote Final Fantasy (more accurately a blend between his FF8 and FF11 appearance)

user15026
@GraceNote glareface

@ashleynunn it really was.

4:18 PM
@RilgonArcsinh Hehe, I have a Tonberry :D
Tonberries rule!

@AshleyNunn Buy for Yak

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I keep dreaming of a day when we will see a sequel

@RilgonArcsinh I've a Tonberry and a Cactuar mehself

user15026
@GraceNote closes her eyes and plugs her ears and hums

@James I do that to people it seems

4:18 PM
@James Tonberries are awesome and if I were to get another custom plushie made it'd be a Tonberry
I've also considered trying to dress up as a Tonberry but... effort

@AshleyNunn You'd better be humming "Buy for Yak"

@James somebody pinged me and I got curious

@RilgonArcsinh Pretty sure I've got an image of a Tonberry Costume somewhere on my machine

@RilgonArcsinh You just need a robe! And a lantern I suppose :)

user15026
@GraceNote sighs I am really doomed here aren't I?

4:19 PM
@AshleyNunn Only if you don't buy for yak, which will be a far greater regret in your life.

@spugsley It was you who made the 'Change everyone into a Goat!' hack wasnt it!!
@RilgonArcsinh That looks pretty kewl :)

@James Yup, well worth what it cost to commission, IMO :)

You know what else I think of when I think about Yaks and Video Games? Roast Leg of Yak.

@RilgonArcsinh Mind if I ask how much that was?

4:22 PM
@GraceNote I am not going back to Mu and you cannot make me. Ever.
@James It was $75 shipped, IIRC.

@RilgonArcsinh But... but... Psycho Slider is there!

wonkette.com/479708/… North Carolina: Cesspool of Sin.

It lets you sliiiiiiiiiiide!

I threw my IoG cart into a ditch as a kid due to Mu. No.

4:24 PM
@RilgonArcsinh You're much older now, and a much better gamer. Mu should be a cakewalk now

@LessPop_MoreFizz Asheville is awesome

And you'll probably spend the next few years wondering just how bad you were as a kid

@GraceNote Well yes, but childhood horrors die hard and all that.
(I have played through it again since then, but I still posit Mu as the worst gaming experience of my childhood - yes, even worse than that goddamned dam level in the TMNT game)

@RilgonArcsinh When I was young I couldn't even get past the sections of Metroid II with Gamma Metroids out of fright

@GraceNote I got past those because my dad could and I didn't want him to think I was a baby. :/
That, and I had to help with the map we were making.

4:27 PM
@rilgon no way, electro-swimming in TMNT was way worse than mu.

Consequently when I picked it up like 7 years later on a whim, and I beat it in about an hour or two.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The former didn't make me throw a game cart in a ditch in fury, so I'm sticking with my assertion.

I beat IoG. I never beat TMNT. QED.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'd high five you here but it'd imply that I never beat TMNT

Speaking of Breaking Bad... flavourmachine.com/breaking Cooking Mama: Meth Edition.

user15026
4:31 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz I saw that the other day, and thought of you. It also reminded me to add that show to the long list of things I need to watch eventually.

@LessPop_MoreFizz my ADD is kicking in during the first episode

@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh, dear. It would be so amusing to have a Cooking Mama game where you mix drugs up properly.

user15026
@fbueckert Considering the recipes aren't even how you would make real food properly..... :P

user15026
Some days when I get bored I think I should make a blog where I try to follow the steps in a CM recipe with real food.

@AshleyNunn Doesn't mean you couldn't make the recipes real for CM: Drug edition. You could even add a "Lemonade stand" mechanic, where you try to hawk your wares.
Cooking Mama: Drug Tycoon.

4:38 PM
@pixel give it two episodes. You'll be hooked.

user15026
@fbueckert I would buy it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Speaking of Breaking Bad reddit.com/r/IAmA/xk4y7

@AshleyNunn I would read this religiously.

@RilgonArcsinh If it had actual taste tests, I'd want a "Total medical bill cost" section at the end.

user15026
@fbueckert Taste testing would be part of it, unless, like, my food was raw pork or something

4:45 PM
@AshleyNunn Pull an LICD: Hire hobos to taste test.

user15026
@fbueckert I am kinda lacking in hobo-availability

@AshleyNunn I could loan you kitchen space in Dallas.

@AshleyNunn Aww. That's too bad.

user15026
@RilgonArcsinh If I wasn't in Canada, I would take you up on that :P

@AshleyNunn More's the pity.

user15026
4:47 PM
@fbueckert I guess I will just have to suffer.

user15026
Also, now I am totally going to make this a thing. I hope I haven't traded in all my copies of CM....

@AshleyNunn If you pay the cost, I'll pack up some hobos and ship them to you. Actually, wait. I'll pay the cost. Just so long as you don't ship them back.

user15026
oh, nope, I totally have my pirated copy of the third game (damn you, ebay)

user15026
@RESPAWN This strikes me as a fair deal. Can't turn down a bunch of free hobos

@AshleyNunn I think we're going to get a single entry, and then discontinued to the sheer pain you inflict on yourself by taste testing.

4:49 PM
@fbueckert Nah, it'll just put the iron (stomach) in iron chef.

@AshleyNunn You know what won't do anything about this issue but is still a good idea?

user15026
@fbueckert Haha I have a pretty strong stomach. I mean I did do the proper Whovian thing and eat fish sticks + custard recently.

user15026
@GraceNote Do tell.

@AshleyNunn Buy for Yak

user15026
@GraceNote I totally walked into that one.

4:49 PM
@GraceNote Heh.

@GraceNote @AshleyNunn The Yak could be the site mascot!

user15026
@RilgonArcsinh You are not helping.

It could be like a site meme - spot the yak in every picture

Now someone has to make that game I thought of. Cooking Mama: Drug Tycoon would be the awesomest game ever.

@AshleyNunn Listen. I preordered a game expressly to get a limited edition T-Shirt with a picture of a barrel on it that says "BARREL!". Buy for Yak.

4:50 PM
@AshleyNunn Sweet. Breaks out his Hobo Club™

user15026
@GraceNote Haha that is pretty decent logic. What game did that shirt come with?

@GraceNote I preordered the CE of Quake 4 for that same reason (a shirt with the Quake 4 logo on it). Still have the shirt. Don't have Q4 anymore.

@AshleyNunn Atelier Meruru

@GraceNote Gust games are awesome.
They have a running joke with barrels.

That they are
@fbueckert This would be why I have the shirt

4:54 PM
@GraceNote I need more games that have this sort of alchemy system; know of any?

[smarmy Star Ocean 3 suggestion goes here]

@fbueckert Go to Japan and buy all the ones you didn't get yet

@GraceNote :/. You suck at actually naming things.
I own all of Gust's American games. I think.
goes to check

@fbueckert Everything I'd name first starts with the word "Atelier" and ends with a girl's name. It's not really a difficult process on that respect.

@GraceNote The implication was that you might know of OTHER games that implement something similar. With the assumption that Gust games were obvious and already owned. :P

4:57 PM
@fbueckert But as you said, you only own the American ones

@GraceNote Clarification: I have to understand the language, too.

@fbueckert This would be something you'd need to overcome in order to go to Japan in the first place, so I figured that was built in

@GraceNote Not particularly, actually.
I was in Tokyo for two weeks. My bastardized Japanese sufficed just fine.

Hour three. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee

@LessPop_MoreFizz Clearly you need to build a fort of some construction in the parking lot.
And refuse to come out until support answers your calls.

4:59 PM
Weird. Just read an answer that said "+1 to this other answer..." but didn't actually upvote that other answer.
Which, you'd think, would be the real way to +1 it

@rilgon it is an ikea parking lot.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Therefore, you have bountiful construction options.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz So lots of readily available, cheap fort building materials!

So once I get off the phone with support, I am buying some motherfucking meatballs.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Do you have to construct the meatballs?

5:01 PM
But I can't really leave the car until support calls back.

user15026
Build a fort, make a flag, declare yourself a country, and refuse to leave until your issues get dealt with.

Oh god I hope not.

user15026
Or, you know, consume piles of meatballs.

OK. Now I'm hungry. Thanks. :(

Q: Can I play Fallout: New Vegas without Steam?

Connor PalmerI Just bought Fallout: New Vegas today on amazon for the computer and I am dying to play it, but for some reason it made me install it on steam and is now updating the game which it says will take 5 hours. Is there any way to bypass this?

@RESPAWN In several parts of the world, it is some form of mealtime right now, so you should just give in and eat.

@GraceNote Actually, it's just past noon here, so it is indeed traditional mealtime.
Although I prefer to go later so I don't have to deal with crowds.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Doesn't work for me. :(

Additionally, you purchase abilities (and upgrades) via money, not levels. In fact, nearly everything seems to be based on the amount of money that you've g...
