Q: Mobs die when there's more than 33~ in a 2x1 farm drop V1.11

i've made a classic mob farm using a zombie spawner in 1.11 and whenever i get 30+ mobs in my dropzone they just die when new ones come in, it's like they're crushing eachother. any way to fix this? water doesnt work, an extra drop layer using a piston doesnt work either... Height doesnt matte...
