@Unionhawk This was an excellent article. I have more thoughts on it but mostly I'd just quote chunks of the article. :P

> The anti-PC liberals were so focused on leftists on Twitter that for months they gravely underestimated the seriousness of the real threat to liberal discourse. It was not coming from women, people of colour, or queer people organising for their civil rights, on campus or elsewhere. It was coming from @realdonaldtrump, neo-Nazis, and far-right websites such as Breitbart.
Did I just somehow miss the part where it explains this in greater detail
> To play the anti-political-correctness card in response to a legitimate question about policy is to shut down discussion in much the same way that opponents of political correctness have long accused liberals and leftists of doing. It is a way of sidestepping debate by declaring that the topic is so trivial or so contrary to common sense that it is pointless to discuss it.
Ah, there we go
Interesting
Has he actually done that though? Dodged questions like that?

All. The. Time.
It's basically how he "answers" questions.

@GnomeSlice 5th and 6th paragraph of that article.

@Ronan yeah, that sounds like a statement about political correctness, responding to a remark about him not being politically correct
Not a policy

That wasn't a question about being politically correct, that was a question about having a history of misogyny and outright sexism.

> I don’t frankly have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn’t have time either.”
"Why are you asking me about that instead of actual presidential policies"

If you're defining being "too politically correct" as not constantly insulting and attacking people you have disagreements with, then I think there's an issue with how you communicate with people.

7:19 PM
They weren't cherry picked at all? He does it constantly?
I think the point is that they seem more concerned with the fact that he's an asshole (which he is) than anything of real substance as it relates to the presidency

If you're defining being "too politically correct" as anything close to that then being too politically correct is the only thing that's keeping everyone on this planet from killing everyone else.

I think there's a difference between killing somebody and calling somebody something shitty sometimes

@GnomeSlice You know he's president for the entire country and not just straight white men right? How he speaks about people tells us how he thinks about people, and the way he speaks about people make lots of people scared about how he'll treat them when he has that much power over them.

@GnomeSlice sure there is

@GnomeSlice And I'm sure the number of hate crimes hasn't risen at all since political incorrectness personified got elected.

7:25 PM
@Ronan I have an argument for this but i need some time to formulate it
im gonna go eat and come back

Literally just popped up in my Twitter feed.

but when a group of people that have been systematically killed by the police start protesting for changes to the system, calling them a "terrorist group" and ignoring their greivances doesn't help

@Ronan That's a valid concern, but how does it support the 'political correctness is not a real problem' headline we were discussing

@GnomeSlice Because so called "political correctness" is about how we talk about certain people, and how we talk about people informs how we think about people, and how we think about people informs how we act towards people, so in a very real sense saying that certain ways of talking about people is not okay gives a strong signal that acting towards them in certain ways is also not ok.

The reason you shouldn't be a dick to somebody is because that's not a good thing to do. Not because you are required to act that way

user15026
7:31 PM
@GnomeSlice Except....he's not even following the first part of that

That's his choice I guess, I wasn't referring specifically to trump though

user15026
He's made it very clear who he does not like.

I mean, free speech

What do you think people are doing? They're telling people what's not a good thing to do, how else would they know?

user15026
And when you're running a country and you display that many vitriolic biases and make it clear you aren't interested in changing them, because you don't consider it worth your time...how are people supposed to feel safe with you in charge?

7:33 PM
I don't have an answer for that, we've sort of diverged anyway, I'm gonna go get my waffles

user15026
This whole fight against political correctness, at the core, seems to be more of a "you cant tell me what to say" thing, and the thing is, it's not just about what you say

Have we diverged? We're saying that political correctness (aka not being a massive dick) is actually a real issue and not a distraction.

user15026
because well, what you say,regardless of action, is defining of who you are as a person.

user15026
And if you treat people like crap verbally, I can't trust you won't treat people like crap in other ways.

@Ash so if you treat people like crap but don't say it that would be better? Assholes gonna be assholes no matter what they are allowed to say about it
@Ash pretty much, actually

7:36 PM
Okay here's the thing @GnomeSlice. When I read this:

user15026
@GnomeSlice " They complained that other people were creating and enforcing speech codes, while at the same time attempting to enforce their own speech codes. Their writers designated themselves the arbiters of what conversations or political demands deserved to be taken seriously, and which did not. They contradicted themselves in the same way: their authors continually complained, in highly visible publications, that they were being silenced."

> “You’ve called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘slobs,’ and ‘disgusting animals’,” Kelly pointed out. “You once told a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice it would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees …”

speech policing, things like protestors shutting down talks by people they don't want to hear from
@Ronan "what a dick"

user15026
@GnomeSlice ....no

user15026
But words aren't just empty things.

Q: How much power does an NVIDIA GeForce 210 actually use?

dfrankowThis spec says the NVIDIA GeForce 210 uses "up to 75W." Does that mean "mostly 75W" or "when I'm reading crap on the Internet (90% of the time) it's 10W"? I want to buy it, but I don't want the equivalent of a bright incandescent bulb on all the time, because I'm an earth hugger.

I read that as "do you even think of women as people". And he answered no. How is that not an important thing to consider for a president?

user15026
That's half the population right there that you are disparaging

@Ronan why would you read it like that

user15026
I don't expect you to like every woman you encounter, but if you're so quick to dehumanize them, I don't trust you to care one bit about my interests

user15026
@GnomeSlice How else can you read it?

7:38 PM
For starters most of those descriptions are about animals. Non-human animals.

I dunno about you but if I think somebody's fat I don't think they're subhuman

@GnomeSlice Yes. That's the word I was referring to.
Well done @GnomeSlice! You've solved my word puzzle!

user15026
@GnomeSlice Great, so you're not a shitty person in this instance, but guess what, he acts like he does.

Horray for @GnomeSlice.

user15026
And he's not alone in this kind of thinknig

7:40 PM
He's allowed to be shitty
that's the point
he's a fuckin clown but he should be allowed to be one

user15026
@GnomeSlice ....you get where peopel are supposed to trust him to run a damn country right

again, article wasn't specifically about trump

@GnomeSlice the difference is that you can't be a clown when you are a public figure

@GnomeSlice not if he's running for president he isn't

I didn't elect him

user15026
7:41 PM
@GnomeSlice His "fuckin clown" self is in charge of a country.

user15026
He has HUGE amounts of power now.

user15026
so no, I don't think going "it's his right" is gonna cut it

everything he says will be reported by newspapers and media all over the world

@GnomeSlice You're sure as hell defending him though.

@Ronan I'm defending his right to be an asshole

7:44 PM
@GnomeSlice he has a right to be an asshole out of the public eye

But once again, article wasn't specifically about him

but when you are president you give up certain rights because your position has to come first

@GnomeSlice He has a right to be an asshole, so does everyone else. But if you're going to be an asshole them people are going to tell you that and let everyone know how much of an asshole you are.

that's fine

Where exactly is the "gone mad" part of this then?

7:45 PM
I don't think anybody disagrees with that

As in "political correctness gone mad"

well there's things like protestors disrupting talks so people can't speak at public places

You just said telling people how much of an asshole they are is fine.

@Ronan If I think somebody I'm talking to is an ass, I won't talk to that person. What I also won't do is follow other people around and prevent them from talking to that person as well if they want to

@GnomeSlice we can agree that protesters disrupting a talk pales in comparison to people threatening violence, right?

user15026
7:47 PM
@GnomeSlice a) colleges aren't really "public places" b) if they're speaking out, they're telling someone they're an asshole that they don't want to listen.

@Ash speaking out and preventing others who may want to listen from doing so are two different things

user15026
@GnomeSlice There's a difference between a conversation and someone being allowed a public platform - if the college allows him to speak, they're basically having to endorse the message (or at the very least, the fact they allowed someone to use their platform for that message).

stephen fry is better at this than me
@Ash So you don't think colleges should support different ideas? There should be only one way of thinking or they are 'endorsing' the 'wrong' ideas?

Eh. Stephen Fry is also kind of an asshole, though.

user15026
If enough people come to them and say "hey yo homebiscuits this makes me feel hella ungood", it makes a lot more sense for them to step back, partially as an image-saving thign.

7:49 PM
@Fluttershy sure. but he's also really smart

The protesters aren't magically stopping people from speaking. They're protesting, and then the college is saying "yeah you're right, we won't pay him to talk here and give him a platform"

user15026
@GnomeSlice ....that's not my arguement what so ever

user15026
@GnomeSlice that doesn't preclude them being an asshole

user15026
you can be fucking brilliant and still an asshole who I don't want to engage with

Doesn't mean everything he says is automatially wrong

7:50 PM
Being smart doesn't make everything he says automatically right.

It's true! I'm a pretty smart guy, and I say stupid shit all the time. :D

I didn't say the video was right because he was smart, what
did you even listen to it

Yeah, this isn't the first time I've heard it.

i mean freedom of speech specifically refers to government organizations censoring political speech. it has nothing to do with private citizens and organizations doing things

user15026
@GodEmperorDune also this.

7:53 PM
agreed
but you say that trump should be held to a higher standard since he's running for office

I hate soldering

Do you not think colleges and universities should be as well?

user15026
@GnomeSlice Yes

Doesn't stop people from crying about their free speech when someone calls them out on bullshit though. <_<
@GnomeSlice Absolutely. Yes.

user15026
@Fluttershy Sadly, no

user15026
7:53 PM
@GnomeSlice Higher standard != letting anyone speak forever

I guess that's my whole argument gone then
gonna play some league
@Fluttershy side note, "that guy is a dick" seems like a weak argument

I have successful jury rigged some internet.
is excited

@GnomeSlice it's more that when you ask "why did you do dickish thing x?" the response is "I don't need to be politically correct"

@GodEmperorDune was talking about stephen fry. His response to the video was 'eh he's an asshole'

@GnomeSlice When someone's telling you how to act, them being an asshole becomes a deciding factor in whether you listen to them.

7:59 PM
fair enough I guess
I guess I just prefer to listen to what they have to say then decide for myself

@GnomeSlice and that's your prerogative

but being an asshole isn't

@StrixVaria 23 but there is some unknown number of idle hours on there

you can be an asshole if you want, but people will call you out on it

8:05 PM
cc @Wipqozn

side quests get more painful as they really spread out

At the end of the day, some people like to use this whole "society is too pc xdxd" and "its just a different idea" as a shield to distract people from what they're actually saying.

The food that makes your chocobo run faster is totally worth it

And if anyone calls them out on them being awful for saying that thing, then that person is now shutting down free speech or whatever

@Unionhawk Because being able to freely express your ideas without being ridiculed is something every special snowflake must have.
No matter how abhorrent their views.

Q: Why doesn't anyone want to work in the forest?

mattdmI've got a city of almost 30,000, and an industrial park that's working reasonably well. There's a forest right nearby, and I thought — hey, why not expand into that and reduce the need for imported raw materials? So, I built a little zone dedicated to forestry, and soon, forest-businesses croppe...

Q: How do I regain entry to the soul cairn if neither me nor Serana is a vampire?

DeadMan360xXSo when I originally went into the soul cairn I had Serana turn me into a vampire, then I got cured. Later I got serana cured too. Now I have no idea how to return to the soul cairn.

It simultaneously creates a bulletproof shield for people who want to "not be pc", and a spiked shield to use against people who call you out on it, or who choose to be a respectful human being.

user15026
@Yuuki cracks up I wouldn't choose it for myself but I appreciate the dedication to teh pun

Also, woo! Got my collector's edition strategy guide.

don't people that complain about political correctness open themselves up to be incessantly and mercilessly insulted

Strategy guides are for the weak
as are q&a websites

8:15 PM
@badp that's where the "different ideas" defense comes in

@Sterno ARQUCKS?
ARQUQS.
@Unionhawk I still don't know when racist went from adjective to insult

There are varying levels of anti-PC. There's frothing racist sexist homophobe, and there's "I'm using words like 'illegal aliens' instead of 'undocumented workers'" and 'I default to 'he' as a pronoun"

hey undocumented worker is still pretty politically correct
...when compared to "mexicans who are murderers and rapists"

illegal alien is the non-PC one but yeah

ah sorry
I thought that was more legalese
misappropriated legalese perhaps

8:20 PM
Then there's the next step up, like "calls things 'retarded'"

8:31 PM
@Frank Nice what game?

@RedRiderX Oh, right. FF15

Oh nice.
Man maybe I should get FF15...
It seems to be doing interesting battle things but I'm not sure how long I can push a car down a desert road.

About 1 minute is as long as you need

Q: How to remove a real-id from a friend in BattleNet?

user173157I accidently added someone as a real id friend in battle net, and they accepted. Now we both want to remove the person from the list, so that the other person shows up with the username instead. How do I do this ? I can't see anything on Blizzard's FAQ

David YellWhen you rest, you are presented with an overview of the map, in the bottom left hand corner is a coloured dial, which usually says '0 days elapsed', along with two shades of blue and yellow.
