@GraceNote Are you suggesting the blog just be where we send our off topic things?

The user here has edited their question into something less subjective:

@RonanForman Not even remotely

things that don't fit the Q&A model

so... reviews, game diaries, events, etc -- like we've been trying to do so far?

I think it's salvaged enough to be reopened, neh?

8:01 PM
it'd be silly to ask the question "Are there any Minecraft easter eggs in Skyrim?" just so you could post that easter egg
2

But, for example, some interesting elements may be difficult to organically bring up in a Q&A environment. The aforementioned Easter Egg, for example

@DavidFullerton Aside from the fact we'd probably close that preeeeetty quick

It's the kind of thing that is only asked if knowledge of the thing exists (and even then it can come out very awkward), but you need to spread the word to get knowledge out there.

Q: Where can you buy massive amounts of Soul Gems?

LaykeI would like to buy lots and lots of Soul Gems. Petties etc. It's to train Enchanting. I can't find a reliable source that constantly has a good supply. (Aside from Collette at the Mages College, and the Wizard in Dragons Reach, I can't find anyone else?)

Would we mark series tags as important?

8:08 PM
I like that idea @DavidFullerton. We could still aim at posting larger more text heavy posts, but we would also make those posts about something "cool", like the minecraft skyrim Easter egg. It
This way people always have a reason to check the blog.

user30
So I walked into a classroom this morning

@Wipqozn I'm kind of worried about people being constantly annoyed by the "blog" notification on the site

@ThomasMcDonald and you realized you were naked?

@ThomasMcDonald HAHA great joke!

user30
Someone had drawn Me Gusta & Haters gonna hate faces on the board

8:09 PM
@FallenAngelEyes yes, we'll have to change that if it's going to be "new" all the time

user30
@Wipqozn ﴾͡๏̯͡๏﴿

@FallenAngelEyes IF we plan to have the blog update more frequently, than I think we need to link into restructuring how the menu buttons are organized.

user30
In other news, I shall stay well away from chat on Friday night.

@ThomasMcDonald Why is this?

user30
I don't want to be suspended. Again.

8:10 PM
@ThomasMcDonald haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawyeah man, let's go get hammered!

user30
@Mana You always have the best ideas. Plus it's my mates 18th and beer and lots of local bands are playing and beer

If we could incorporate the blog into the site more, we could have associated badges, and that would encourage people to blog.

ALso, @DavidFullerton, could we prevent blog from knocking the chat button off the page?

if we moved the blog button then chat could stay there permanently

@DavidFullerton I think if we just removed the huge "new" button both the chat and blog button could fit there just fine.

8:13 PM
@ThomasMcDonald Hah, that sounds like a great deal of fun.

@Wipqozn there are a ton of links...user, rep, badges, mod, review, blog, chat, meta, faq
and I think the "new" button is really important for sites that have infrequent blog posts...you only click that blog link so many times without seeing new content before you just stop clicking it

@DavidFullerton I need to start running before I even begin to make this joke, but...Let's be honest, the real solution is just to force @RebeccaChernoff to change her name.

@DavidFullerton YEah, I'm just saying the amount of space the "new" button takes up is almost the same length as the "chat" button. If we remove that,it should allow both "chat" and "blog" to be displayed at the same time.

probably...but I like the idea of pulling the blog down into the main nav

@DavidFullerton I meant if we make the blog more active, by using your idea of smaller blog posts with "cool" things

8:14 PM
Whay do people say to the badge thing? Would it break the point of badges?

@DavidFullerton I have a long-ish name, and I honestly don't feel that having a blog and a chat link there would break my aesthetic experience

If the blog was updated on a near daily basis with "cool" stuff we wouldn't need the new button

@RonanForman If the badges are on the main site, I would say yes.

@GraceNote Though so, and blog badges seem pointless.

There is an easy solution to the blogging issue...
Just reward people with hats for writing blog posts.

user30
8:17 PM
hatshatshatshatshatshatshatshatshatshatshatshatshats

user30
my hat-detector just picked up

@ThomasMcDonald See? People are obsessed with hats!

user30
I would totally write a blog post for an actual trilby.

Heck, @Powerlord would probably submit a new blog post every day if it meant he would get a free hat!

Have 5 dozen tf2 accounts idling and give a drop every time someone rights a post.

8:20 PM
@RonanForman Exactly.
We would have more blog posts than we knew what to do with!

@Wipqozn They'd all be about TF2 as only TF2 players would have an incentive.

@RonanForman Except everyone loves free things! TF2 player or not.

lots of games have hats...Skyrim has hats

user30
I would prefer a real hat.

I think this hat idea has legs

8:22 PM
@ThomasMcDonald You've got a head cold?

@DavidFullerton I'm not really a fan of ambulatory hats

@DavidFullerton Hats for peoples legs? You're crazy!

user30
ahh, Bangarang is awesome

We need 2 more reopen votes for this question:
...why didn't that onebox?

@GnomeSlice this is pretty decent if you have an hour spare

@David must have just been an API hiccup?

Woo. What was wrong?

yeah the API is a bit flaky right now...they're deploying some changes

Ah, gotcha.

Q: How can I find my followers skills and stats?

DavidYellI have Sven as my follower at the moment, and I've given him some Elven Armour (Light) and an Ancient Nord Battleaxe (2h), but I've not idea if these items work for him or not. Do the followers have stats and skills already? I read on the wiki that Lydia is a good theif, and I know Sven is a bar...

Q: Skyrim - Speaking with Silence & Vampirism (spoilers)

GravelIn Skyrim, when working on the Speaking with Silence quest for the Thieves Guild, you end up sedated by a poisoned arrow while Mercer and Karliah discuss the good old times. Considering vampires have a 100% resistance to poison, would being a vampire in that situation make any difference? Maybe ...

Q: How do I activate this platform?

OakSo I've been playing the Sideway demo and I got 4 out of the 5 secrets. There's a certain platform I can't reach, and nearby there's a special platform which I can't stand on, but glows when I jump over it. Here's a screenshot in which I added an arrow indicating the unreachable platform and a ci...

Q: Hardline Pro Mechanics in MW3?

MechkoAs you may know, Hardline Pro MW3 allows a player to get a point towards their kill streak using two assists. Does this span over deaths? eg: if I get an assist and then die before getting another assist, does this still count towards my killstreak?

A: How do I succeed at lockpicking?

wdaawkopget ur facts straight, Mana.... shit does f**kings change... I used my finger to pinpoint the exact location when i almost got a master chest opened, and i placed it on the exact same spot, and it instantly broke. so ha!.

@TomWijsman Thanks, done.

Welp, looks like the Skyrim mod community is up and running already... Spiders are now bears.

You know what I think it's funny

@badp Me too!

@Mana Yeah! Hilarious.
I just had to share it with you.

9:45 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz You hear that? Bears.

@GraceNote In Russia, Bears much smaller. Also, more hair. Less lurking.

Q: Blast prevention software

wizlogWhile playing intense first-person-shooter games often a grenade goes off near my head. The problem, is that I want to maintain my longer hearing while still hear the guy who sneaks up behind me. Is there software I could use to deafen loud blasts and amplify quiet footsteps?

Oh hey, Skyrim has exactly half a million more views than MW3
and... now it doesn't.

A Quake 3/Live players sees this and thinks... man, if you didn't load the textures you would probably gain another 20 fps!

My eyes hurt.

9:52 PM
A TF2 player... well he thinks this.
@ArdaXi It's absolutely playable, I assure you. Much more playable than using the vanilla lowest settings and getting 20 fps when watching at just the scenery without any player, hat, effect or whatever.

I do like "Surprise! His computer is really a cheese sandwich!"

I wish. I'd get to have a new computer every twelve minutes.
btw I wasn't kidding about the textures
↑ it is perfectly normal to play like this

See, I like that.
Because that's ultra-minimalistic.

Give me a way to do so in TF2.

That TF2 screenshot is just trying to provide as much graphics as possible while still being playable.
@badp Gives an unfair advantage in TF2.

9:57 PM
you could claim the same about Quake Live.

In Quake Live, enemies are already very, very, very contrasted against the environment.
Glowing and such.

So, there's something that slightly concerns me about the site. Nobody talks about us.

@ArdaXi not really

Compared to TF2 they are.
@Mana Depends on who 'us' is.

Like, I just ran a gaming stack exchange google search...and there's basically nothing that pops up besides site analytics

9:58 PM
This is what the game normally looks like
except he's still using green models
because they're that badly needed
I used green models myself.

@badp I know what the game looks like. I've played.

You're not alone in this room

@Mana That's because we need a proper name.

@Mana We're probably just not big enough yet for that to just happen

user30

10:22 PM
@badp: Heh... You make me want to play Quake Live right now.

@TomWijsman Well aren't you dutch? It's 23:23! What's the problem?
Actually if I'd never came here in NL, I'd have never found out "Wijsman" does not read "Wii-jays-man" :P

@badp Yes, it's not late, is it? ^^

@badp I thought he was Belgian.

Ah, I read that the other way around; yeah, there is no problem.

"ij" still doesn't read "i-jay" :P

Q: How can I make my werewolf claws more effective?

AardvarkSo, I'm having a little bit of a dilema over here: I love the ability to turn into a werewolf and chase people down, but my claws don't seem to do much damage (especially compared to my 2 handed weapon). How can do more damage as a werewolf making my nightly pillages more terrifying?

@ArdaXi Yes, I am. But I speak Dutch so I usually interpret "are you Dutch" as in what language I speak...

@TomWijsman Right. So you're from Flanders then?
2

North of Antwerp

and right next to Homer Simpson

runs for his life

Their speech is just as silly to us as Flanders' is to Homer.
joins @badp in running

Hidilly Ho Neighborinos!

@RavenDreamer omg :O I wasn't there yet before I left! Thanks :D
does the 10k dance

Oh god there's a Choose Your Own Adventure Novel hidden inside Skyrim!

@badp that was a pretty crazy game
So, a question for the folks who have been playing Skyrim:

Q: Is there a limit to skills in skyrim?

TM.I realize there is a limit to the number of perks one can get during the course of the game, however, I am not sure if there is a limit to other skills. If one were to obsessively spend hours trying, is it possible to level up all skills to the limit (and, what is the limit for a skill anyway?)....

Q: How can I see my ally's health?

FinzzSimply put, I don't see any way to gauge how much health an ally has so I know when to heal them. In Oblivion, a health bar showed up when you placed the crosshair on either an enemy or an ally, why would they leave this out?

0
Q: What does "forge numbers" do?

TM.Sometimes during my rampant taking-of-things, I'll come across a large ledger, and I'll have the option to "forge numbers". What does this do, and when do I want to do it?

Q: Where is the option to have sex?

LexiSo im wondering since it is possible to have kids in this game there must be a speech option of something pertaining to sex, correct? Well i can't seem to find it, right now all i can ask is for them to make me dinner and ask about the shop...

These days playing Oblivion or Morrowind without mods is kind of outlandish. How does Skyrim compare? Is there a lot of broken stuff that I should wait for the community to fix?

@Brant I haven't played it, but I've heard that it's still buggy like most Bethesda games.

@Brant Don't know about you but that looked like a lot more than one question about Skyrim.
3

It's not my fault Lazers chatbombed me.

@Brant It's noticeably less buggy than Morroblivion.
But, it's not without it's bugs.
In terms of mechanics: Well, aside from an exploit or two that you can be honorable and not use, they're really pretty fine. Nowhere near Oblivion level broken.

10:56 PM
Hmm.

I read "PETA something something" and immediately think "Meh, not worth getting outraged over...or even interested by"

That image is hilarious
On the mario page

Just saying

Even though I'm pretty sure the Tanooki suit is based on the mythical creature of the Tanuki, anyway, pfft.

11:03 PM
@Brant Sorry, I had to star that given Lazers

Meh, they're crazy. Better they pour that energy into bizarre video games and incrediby retrograde misogynistic ad campaigns than spray painting people in fur coats.

...Super Tofu Boy, really?

Aren't raccoon dogs the ones with outlandishly large sacs in mythology?

Yes, Tanuki in mythology do... in fact have that quality.
There may or may not be an entire movie about this. I do not suggest looking into it.

...the wikipedia page has the image I was thinking of
Not sure I can/want to link that here

11:10 PM
@GraceNote That's what I thought.

Well, if mario's suit is based off the mythological animal he has a couple good parachutes

Tofu boy is actually a character in SMB, he's like Meat Boy but unplayably nerfed.

Q: Can I complete The Blessings of Nature without hurting the tree?

DMA57361As part of the quest line The Blessings of Nature I have acquired a specialist weapon by the name of Nettlebane that I am supposed to use to chop through the roots of the Eldergleam tree to obtain some sap. Q: Any tips for preventing your horse from dying?

FinzzI keep running into the problem of my horse rushing in to join me in combat, which helps sometimes, but I often forget to heal him and he dies. I have tried parking him a ways away, but he still seems to notice I am in battle and rushes over to join. Can anyone give me some tips they have tried...

@GraceNote ...and it plays like Bit Trip Runner :/

SMB creator Edmund McMullen appreciated the efforts made by PETA to popularise his game, but does not agree with their tactics. "How many Peta members does it take to change a lightbulb?.... None, Peta can't change anything."

11:20 PM
I really wish there was a Skyrim demo so I could find out how well it runs on my machine first.

Oh nifty. A Python convention is taking place near where I live. My old boss is giving a presentation as well.

To The Pirate Bay!

@Brant :(

@LessPop_MoreFizz IF he is just using it to see how well it runs, I don't see the problem.

I've purchased too many games in the past only to find out that they kinda run like crap on my particular setup, or are too buggy/janky to really enjoy. Not happening again.
Actually, I can't remember the last time I pirated a game instead of just buying it...

11:30 PM
@Brant I know! And with the grant, we're practically betting that we can run the game

Hmm, actually, I think it was the GOTY version of Oblivion. (I bought Oblivion when it came out, gave up on it because of the bugs, and came back to it several years later. I didn't really feel like finding my discs so I just downloaded the GOTY version that also had the expansions and DLC.)

@Brant oblivion worked really well for me, maybe I got lucky?

I didn't have the greatest computer at the time I originally bought it.

@Brant Morrowind would not work on my computer till I got one that had something magical called pixel shaders.

When I played Oblivion originally, my computer was terrible.
I couldn't get over 4 frames per second on the lowest settings.
I ended up being able to play it with Oldblivion though, and getting 20-30 fps by disabling almost all of the shaders.
It looked absolutely horrible though.

11:47 PM
yey?
I dunno, this looks like a lose lose, not a win lose.
Even the winning music is sad.

Let me guess: It's dark and gloomy?

Yes
I closed the tab without recording it, because, seriously.
Who cares.
The game itself was kind of fun until I gave up and just held space
