Just got a client laptop that is super locked down. Their security policy says I can't check gmail from it. I can't actually install any tools I need to do development (like, say, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) on it either

They use Lotus Notes, and I have an email account on it. All communication is to that email address, and I am not allowed to auto-forward the emails to my actual email account.

@TimStone Having to use their internal email instead of my company email is incredibly frustrating. Only being able to see it through the provided laptop, which I have no other reason to ever turn on, it also frustrating. I am not doing top secret work here.

Now I have a laptop taking up space on my desk whose only purpose is to make me occasionally glance at it to see if the client emailed me something. As a bonus, since I'm not allowed to send the email anywhere, when the project ends and I give the laptop back, I'll have no provable record of any of the discussions or decisions that were made.

Hrm. I guess it doesn't say that I can't take a screenshot of the email, and send those somewhere!

It's useful for enforcing email retention policies, but depending on what kind of work you do and the nature of the client in question it's probably stupid. I'm just used to it because some of our work is for a three-letter agency.
