What is the max player allowed to play simultaneously in a multiplayer game ? Is is the same for both and internet and LAN game ?

I'm trying to run TF2 at a custom resolution. I have 3 monitors at 1024x1280 (all together 3072x1280). When Team Fortress 2 only gives me one monitor as the max resolution. I tried setting the startup options in steam to 3000x1200 with the -w and -h, but no dice. Any ideas?
