Q: Where did 'Soon™' originate?

Nick TI've seen coming Soon™ attached to some Valve and Blizzard products, but did it start with one of them (and if so, which)? What was the first game (or other product) that was to be launched with the blatantly tongue-in-cheek Soon™?

lol what the hell is this
3
and why is it +10

> 2011

lol old questions amirite

@murgatroid99 oh word
that's why
WTF
> I was typing in Gnome on twitter and saw it
@Yuuki

did we not clear up the whole gnomephone twitter thing?

Q: Blast Protection

AnonymousHow many TNT does it take for you to die, with blast protected armour? When telling me how many hits it will take, please be specific to what you are saying. How many hits of TNT for each armour. Leather Gold Chain Iron Diamond

Q: Sword Block for PVP

AnonymousWhen clicking right click on your computer mouse while holding a sword, the sword blocks. I heard that it helps PVP. Does it really help? When someone hits you with a sword while you block, does it do less damage to you?

No we did
it's just hilarious that somebody I know elsewhere found it totally on his own.

Q: More characters

AnonymousIs there a way to get more characters in SSB 3DS version? Or is it when you get it, you just have those characters. I'm kind of confused, so if you'd answer this question it would be appreciated!

Just explain it like "My phone created its own twitter account, I have no idea how that happened"

Who owns the GnomePhone twitter? I feel like it should be @LessPop_MoreFizz

I do not own it.

12:25 AM
It is @Yuuki iirc

There's a GnomePhone twitter?

Not active

Yeah, it's on the backburner for now.

12:35 AM
Gabe, you and Valve are in pretty much a constant state of pissing off the internet.
And, conversely, the Internet is in a perpetual state of "pissed off"
So...
Oh god a blister in his eye?
Oh god

@Unionhawk as much as i think this is being blown way out of proportion, I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

@Rapitor Yeah, well
Tl:Dr Gabe Seems to believe paid mods will turn modders into game designers if they create successful paid mods. He ain't wrong.
Is pretty much my opinion on the entire thing

Q: Very little attention for a bountied question

DominatorXI have a question which I asked 10 days ago which could affect over 10 000 people playing Shadow Fight 2 on Windows computers. But it only reached about 30 views after 3 days. So I offered a 50-rep bounty. Yet, my question hasn't even reached 100 views. Why isn't my question receiving many view...

@Unionhawk good guy Boogie to the rescue

maybe he's calculated all of this.

@yuuki owns the Gnome phone twitter, he stopped with it when I mentioned that he should probably get permission from you to post the stuff publicly because he was going to create a Gnome phone generator and use the account to promo it, iirc

piss everyone off completely, and then be like "oh here's half life 3, love us again"

@GnomeSlice I wouldn't really call him a good guy. He has good points every now and then, but he's also very pro-GG.

Oh, I don't know about that. His videos about fat shaming and shit are pretty legit though
Also he's really really funny

@GnomeSlice his draw my life was really good too

I took a packet of instant milk tea and added some instant coffee mix to it

12:49 AM
@PrivatePansy You rebel you

Now I'm going to drink it. This is either going to be disgusting or amazing

@PrivatePansy drink it instantly

@TheAce That'll burn my tongue instantly

@AshleyNunn Oh, something I should mention about Leverage. A number of the episodes are based on true stories and the writers actually had to tone down some of the "evilness" because TV audiences wouldn't believe how monstrous people can get.

No, see, if you drink it instantly, it won't burn because burns require heat and slightly extended contact time
It's like just barely poking a hot stove

12:52 AM
@Unionhawk exactly

If contact time=0, then burn potential=0

@Unionhawk Depending on the heat, it could be a really short contact time.

It's science!

It's pretty good

I'm a certified First Aid merit badge counselor, I know my shit

12:52 AM
Surprisingly the milk tea is stronger than the coffee, which is strange since this is extra strength
@Unionhawk Can you bandage a burned gullet?

@Fluttershy am i the only one who couldn't give 2 shits about half life?

No
You don't bandage a burn anyway
That's counterproductive
You apply cool water and that is it

@TheAce I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Do not pop blisters in the case of 2nd degree, seek emergency medical care for 3rd

Anyway, if you have tea and coffee I'd suggest you try adding them together

12:54 AM
That just sounds like...

The caffeine content is a little high though. Well, who needs sleep anyway

A bad idea and, simultaneously, a great idea
I'm going to have to use all my coins to stock up on caffeine for this week

@Fluttershy the internet is always all worked up over HL3 (i understand that it's basicly a joke at this point) but some stories just end with cliffhangers I never got what all the fuss was about

@TheAce Oh. I think you meant to reply to @Rapitor with that, then. :P He mentioned HL3, not me.

It is actually a thing, though
Yuanyang or Coffee with tea (often transliterated according to the Cantonese Chinese pronunciation Yuenyeung, Yinyeung, or Yinyong), also commonly known as Kopi Cham in Malaysia (cham from the Hokkien word mix) is a popular beverage in Hong Kong, made of a mixture of three parts of coffee and seven parts of Hong Kong-style milk tea. It was originally served at dai pai dongs (open air food vendors) and cha chaan tengs (cafe), but is now available in various types of restaurants. It can be served hot or cold. The name yuanyang, which refers to Mandarin Ducks, is a symbol of conjugal love in Chinese...

12:57 AM
That's amazing

@TheAce you mean you don't get why people want HL3 or why people overreact to every new rumor about it?

Really, really, really disappointed that this user isn't just dedicated to writing mystery fanfics about Area 51.

> any topic from the syllabus
ah fuck
now I have to pick my own goddamn topic
10 pages, I can do
SOMEONE GIVE ME TOPICS ABOUT INFORMATION ETHICS
GO

@Unionhawk Piracy.

1:00 AM
@Unionhawk Plagiarism

@Unionhawk Information ethics as in, ethics about information (eg. disclosure, whistleblowers, etc.) or ethics in information technology (eg. hacking)?

Uh

@Fluttershy right you are sorry about that!
@Ixrec both

@TheAce I'm with you on half of that then
HL3 is probably the only game I would ever preorder if it became real
but until it becomes real I couldn't care less about rumors of it

@Ixrec you couldn't pay me enough to play it

1:03 AM
@TheAce So what shooters do you like?

@Ixrec the far cry's are good games and i just got into destiny

interesting, I haven't bothered with any of those because open worlds usually bore me

@TheAce I've been playing the shit out of destiny

@Ixrec nah i love running arounf getting 100%
@GnomeSlice ps4?

It doesn't have a lot of content but it plays so smoothly. It's just really fun to play.
@TheAce Yeeee buddy
I only got my ps4 recently so I'm still not that advanced in it.
I have like a level... 26 titan?
Only has one piece of legendary gear.

1:06 AM
@GnomeSlice awwww yeah add me up I just picked up the game like 3 days ago

GnomeSlice64

ur way ahead of me lol

@TheAce The only open-world game that had that effect on me was Mercenaries, probably because it was more "shoot 100% of the bad guys" than "walk to 100% of the waypoints"

I'm not home for a few days so I don't have access to my PS4
@TheAce I have a like level 7 warlock I could play with you

i cant play it for long periods or my jaw locks up :/

1:07 AM
heh
Because it's so intense?

Sunbro master race class.

@Ixrec head good things about those games

the first one was very good

@GnomeSlice yeah intense games + cerebral palsy makes for fun times :P

I can't remember exactly why the second one didn't grab me, but it's certainly not bad either

1:08 AM
OH MY GAWD IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN
ART IS HARD FUCKING WORK GOODNESS GRACIOUS THESE PEOPLE

@spugsley :(

@Ixrec those were like ps2 era rightt

yeah

the era where I had time to play games lol

1:09 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Have you ever heard The Decemberists?

@Fluttershy don't insult me plz. :P

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not sure what this means. :o

"Do you do prom photos?" "Yes, I sure do!" "What are your prices?" "1.5 hour shoot is 125 dollars" "Oh. Well, you don't have any prom photos in your portfolio so can you do mine for free if I let you use them in there?" DUDE NO.

@spugsley "I have wedding photos in my portfolio (if you do!), and that's like... super prom. So... No."

ROFL

1:11 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz yassssssssssssssssssssssss

@Fluttershy to say that I've 'heard of them' would be an understatement on the level of saying that a Russian high school student has 'heard of' Vladimir Putin.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Are you a fan?

@spugsley I have not listened to this record in a very long time.

@Fluttershy weddings, portraits, and fine art. Literally anything I would need to be able to shoot fucking prom
@LessPop_MoreFizz it's goooood

@spugsley Boom. Super prom.

1:12 AM
@Fluttershy this is the fifth time in two days something like this has happened to me

@GnomeSlice added form when you get back

@Fluttershy Of the old stuff, yeah. I kind of jumped off the bus a while ago, but they still get an instant check out when they do something new.

@TheAce Sweet, I'll def play with you some time

(Also, no matter how much Colin Meloy denies it, that first record is a total Neutral Milk Hotel rip off).
@spugsley Have you heard the new Alabama Shakes record?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yeah! I got into them back around the time Picaresque came out, and I loved it.

1:13 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz yes. It'll need a few more listens, I think. I had hard time getting into it

@spugsley Girl can SING.

@GnomeSlice awesome! as soon as i can open my jaw again i might be able to get my character up to ur levels:P

@Fluttershy That was the last one that I really was head over heels for.

@TheAce I have a hunter I haven't played yet so I could always use her

@LessPop_MoreFizz oh yeah, there's no denying that

1:14 AM
The red Christy Mack hair is a bit weird looking though, I might remake her.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I liked The Crane Wife well enough, but Picaresque is so good.

@Fluttershy You know NMH, right?

@LessPop_MoreFizz What's a good Decemberists song to convince me they're good? I know next to nothing about them.

@GnomeSlice ive got a hinter and a ummm ehats the other one besides warlock?

@StrixVaria 16 Military Wives

1:15 AM
@StrixVaria Mariner's Revenge Song, if you have 10 minutes to kill. :P Otherwise, ^ or The Sporting Life.

Will listen to that now.

@Fluttershy I like long songs as long as they stay interesting throughout.

it has a good video too

Eli the Barrow Boy is probably my favorite though.
@StrixVaria Mariner's Revenge Song definitely stays interesting throughout. :P

1:15 AM
In case you didn't have enough faux-Wes Anderson, circa 2005 in your life.

@TheAce Titan
aka Tank
Titan, Hunter, Warlock

@GnomeSlice yeah titan fits my play style really well

I wouldn't really call Titans tanks. :o There aren't really any tanks in Destiny.

Heh, me too.
@Fluttershy more tank than the other guys, but yeah
The defender subclass is a bit of a tank though
Especially once you get the shit that buffs you inside the shield

@GnomeSlice or as i call it the "fuck your gun here's my fist"

1:18 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz This is like Oasis meets the Beatles.
Neither of those are good things for me :|

@StrixVaria That's... an odd way to describe them, but if that's what gets you there, okay.

@TheAce In true Halo fashion, punching stuff in Destiny is a lot more powerful than shooting it.

@GnomeSlice gotta love that logic

That's okay, though; that's why there's other music. From what I knew of them, I didn't expect to like them, but I want to give them a fair chance since they came up.

@StrixVaria You are more likely to like older Decembrists than Newer stuff though. I'd give this one a shot as a second chance if you're up to it:

1:19 AM
Yesssssssss.

@LessPop_MoreFizz This one is better; I was a minute or so into it already before you posted this.
I didn't want to judge on one song only.

But yeah, if I had to describe the Decembrists, I'd say they're like a second rate Neutral Milk Hotel knockoff.
(Which, given how good NMH are, that is not an insult!)

The songs from Picaresque do such a good job of telling a story, and painting a vivid image. I love it.

@AshleyNunn Also, Christian Kane (Eliot) is awesome.

1:20 AM
@Fluttershy You know NMH, right?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I do not.

Based on the first 10 seconds of the first NMH song I found, I like them a lot better than the Decemberists.

In The Airplane Over The Sea is the only record you really need, and it is one of the greatest albums of all time.
It's a loose concept album about the many reincarnations of the soul of Anne Frank for some reason, but mainly it is just absolutely gorgeous shambolic poetic indie pop with some of the most incredible songwriting and lyricism ever

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, this is a lot better.

@GnomeSlice I can't stop listening to Future Bass.

1:22 AM
@Rapitor Don't call things 'future bass'
That means nothing

that's the genre

@StrixVaria Fun Fact: It is Stephen Colbert's Favorite Song!

@Rapitor No it's not

If @GnomeSlice is saying something is not a genre, that's a powerful statement.

@GnomeSlice what is this genre then?

1:23 AM
idk but 'future bass' means about as much as 'indie'
glitch hop maybe
whatever it is, this is dope as fuck

@GnomeSlice Reallly? This is a genre, but indie isn't? Really?

@GnomeSlice ugh indie

@Fluttershy What this are you referring to?

@Fluttershy All "indie" means is not through established publishers.

@Fluttershy I do get where he is coming from. EDM is extremely hard to define.

1:25 AM
@GnomeSlice The... one that I replied to?

@GnomeSlice Except that 'Indie' does actually mean something fairly coherent when you're not dealing with the sort of asshole pedants who say "It just means independent" (Which it does! But it also refers to a very specific movement in music that occurred after the rise of Commercial Alternative radio in the mid-90's.)

@Fluttershy What, glitch hop? Yes that is a subgenre of electronic dance music.

it often seems like people do just make up genres. that's perfectly OK with me though

It's pretty specific actually

@LessPop_MoreFizz Any famous band examples of that movement?

1:25 AM
@StrixVaria No. It means that, but it also means something else that is very specific.
@StrixVaria Pavement.

@LessPop_MoreFizz 'alternative' then, you wiener.

Neutral Milk Hotel.

@GnomeSlice Music has some really terrible subgenre names.

@GnomeSlice No! Alternative means a thing too!

@Fluttershy What's wrong with Glitch Hop?
@LessPop_MoreFizz nop

1:26 AM
@Fluttershy Metal subgenre names are silly too.

@GnomeSlice What's wrong with Future Bass?

English is Large. It Contains Multitudes.

my subgenre is more real than yours

Words can and do mean many things!

1:27 AM
@Fluttershy This music has bass. And it sounds like it's from the future. Means nothing.

I'm not even talking about weird obscure subgenre here either!

Literally all electronic dance music has 'bass' anyway

@GnomeSlice So... does Glitch Hop just sound like a glitchy robot hopping around?

I'm talking about major big tent terms that are used to define decades worth of musical movements!

And most of it sounds futuristic
@Fluttershy Are you trolling me right now

1:27 AM
I'm not even sure how Future Bass got it's name, because it doesn't sound "futuristic" all I know is it's awesome and I love it.
that's all that matters to me

@LessPop_MoreFizz Interesting. Having heard Franz Ferdinand referred to as "indie" in the sense you described, I can actually kind of hear influences/ties here.

@Rapitor Somebody at monstercat didn't know what genre to put on one of the videos so he put 'future bass' and people started using it for shit that they can't figure out a genre for

@GnomeSlice No. I'm just not sure why "Future Bass" is any less a thing than "Glitch Hop."

might as well just put 'EDM'

@GnomeSlice works for me

1:28 AM
@GnomeSlice I still think IDM first every time you say EDM then have to remind myself that EDM isn't categorically stupid.

first google result for glitch hop is wikipedia
first result for future bass is monstercat
@Rapitor lmao

Short history: Punk begat New Wave, begat "College Rock", a loose label for all sorts of 'left of the dial', non-mainstream, non-commercial sorts of music being played in the early to mid 80's. By the early 90's, said 'college rock' bands were no longer really only being played on college radio coming out of college towns, so the term 'alternative' came in to vogue - this was the era of the rise of Alternative Press magazine, for example.

the reddit's got a nice definition. "Bass driven Future Beats
1) Does it have bass? 2) Does it blow your fucking mind?
Then it's Future Bass. It's not a genre, it's a category."

@Rapitor hue

@Rapitor Clearly you now need to write a Wikipedia article on future bass

1:30 AM
That's great.

@GnomeSlice some techno is edm but not all edm is techno right?

@TheAce Right.
> Future Bass can include music from any genre that emphasis a hard bass line but actually refers to music that can not be categorized into one specific genre.
urbandictionary seems to have it right

@GnomeSlice works for me

Eventually, Alternative became commercial and co-opted. It became a radio format after the rise of grunge. Alternative was 'mainstream'. Bands that would have been called 'alternative' a decade earlier, but were not being played on 'alternative' radio stations needed a new term, and thus the rise of 'Indie' and 'Indie Rock'.

> actually refers to music that can not be categorized into one specific genre.
hah, that is exactly what I guessed

1:31 AM
fine fine. I apologize for calling it my favorite genre. It's Still damn good

man i hate destiny jaw

The placement of those bands in time and the cross-pollination across various music scenes means there are fairly clear lineages of influence that you can trace across all of this stuff, which means that yes, these words MEAN THINGS.

@Rapitor Now that I agree with
and a free download? yes pls

And they mean things beyond the pedantic dictionary definition of "LOL INDIE JUST MEANS INDEPENDENT IT'S A MEANINGLESS WORD" and "LOL ALTERNATIVE JUST MEANS IT'S NOT MAINSTREAM".
Like it or not, these words which have other meanings also mean very specific things musically.

nobody is listening to you
You aren't changing my mind either sorry
I'm kidding, I guess you're probably right.

1:33 AM
we could point out the same argument applies to many names of literary movements

I never really knew any of that, I thought they were just garbage terms people used to sound edgy

If Katy Perry were not on a major label, it would not be "Indie Pop". Indie Pop is a specific thing with a lineage coming out of K Records, through the Elephant Six in Athens and the Twee scene in the Pac NW and UK, and the various Edinborough bands like Belle and Sebastian, and into more modern acts like, the current girl group revivalists and Phil Spector fetishists that are out there.

@Rapitor I mean I guess 'future bass' is as good a term as any to cram stuff that doesn't fit into other subs into
it just seems weird to me
@LessPop_MoreFizz The only one of those I know is Katy Perry
wtf is Twee
You know what I don't even want to know

Currently in definition.

til all the music stuff @LessPop_MoreFizz is yammering about

1:36 AM
@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment lol

@LessPop_MoreFizz Has this happened again?
That's pretty interesting.
"Indie rock" got pretty mainstream in the mid-2000s (ugh this way of referring to that decade).

@StrixVaria It did, but the language didn't shift - if I had to guess, because "indie Rock" didn't take off as a radio format.
@StrixVaria You could say the 'aughts like an old timey person. :P

@StrixVaria i prefer the double-ohs, myself

@Rapitor do you listen to any Garage at all?

@GnomeSlice Short answer: Wes Anderson Movies, and everything about the aesthetic associated with them. Long answer: big article

1:39 AM
@GnomeSlice uh

@LessPop_MoreFizz who?
@Rapitor I'm guessing probably not
Garage
lmao they have a similar picture even

@GnomeSlice Director of Rushmore, The Life Acquatic, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Fabulous Mister Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel

@LessPop_MoreFizz i heard these are good movies but have seen none of them

@LessPop_MoreFizz Hey I've seen The Life Acquatic.
Grand Budapest Hotel is visually sort of similar right
really striking shots and all that
every frame a canvas etc
pretty sure everybody in TLA was baked on set

@GnomeSlice Yes. Same director, and he has a very specific visual style.

1:42 AM
@GnomeSlice pretty good, but this sounds like chillstep to me.

@Rapitor The second one is more traditional garage
phaeleh sort of toes the line

Fun Twee Fact: Before there was a band called Nirvana, there was a record label in Olympia Records called K Records. They put out some of the Twee-est, most gay and childlike records ever. Several of these records featured a session guitarist credited as Kurdt Kobain.

fuck he's good though

@LessPop_MoreFizz wat

Kurdt?

1:43 AM
why?

Let me be clear, when I call K Records albums 'gay' I am not using it as a pejorative, I am using it as adescriptor you idiot flag-monger.

@LessPop_MoreFizz not sure if K Records albums promote homosexuality or...?

Q: Is there any other mann vs machine server that has regenerated credits and the robot cheats?

Andrew EckertSo i was playing team fortress 2 on a mann vs machine server and it was just great. It had regenerating credits, and there was a minor neat little cheat where if I typed in "!robot" I could play as a red robot of my chosen class. It was just great. Now whenever I try to join that server they try ...

also @LessPop_MoreFizz my youtube is recommending me all kinds of eastbound and down clips now, i blame you and @Wipqozn for this

1:46 AM
@Chippies The founder of K Records, Calvin Johnson, (and member of prominent and label-sound defining band Beat Happening), is a Gay man and for the early 90's, was unusually unashamed about that fact, and it's great.
@GnomeSlice I don't know why he went by Kurdt this was the late 80's, pre-nirvana and he was probably on a lot of drugs?
@GodEmperorDune Watch the show it is so good.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I guess it's nice to see the word 'gay' being used properly then :P (p.s I didn't flag you or anyone else)

Yeah, I don't know what idiot did flag it because I didn't look for it fast enough, but I am VERY UPSET WITH THEM.

Mods can see who flags messages?
I feel like this has been discussed before...

@Chippies Sometimes. I'm never sure what the rule is around it, but sometimes I see it and sometimes I don't.
They disappear too fast to ever properly investigate anything.
^^ This is what I mean. Beat Happening was super gay.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I wonder if being able to see them is unintended

1:50 AM
=/

sometimes I think there is a flagbot around, that just flags messages randomly. Sometimes the flags make no sense on why they were flagged
of course, that could just be that I'm an asshole and my definition of what is offensive is way out there compared to most people

Just decline them and move on

yep.

@StrixVaria Going waaaay back to a thing I wanted to respond to earlier: Yes! Modern pop music history is super fun and being able to pull apart all the different cross pollination of scenes and influences and sounds and the conversations that occur across decades is so much goddamn fun and I am a gigantic fucking nerd, as the past hour has demonstrated.
I could talk about this shit all day long, and then some.
But, to go back to my original thesis: Genre names usually mean something, and come out of specific times and places, and dismissing them is a pretty good way to say "I AM IGNORANT AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THAT FACT."

Tyler DoodMy fiancé and I are looking for a local Coop Xbox 360 game and would like some suggestions. 1:53 AM
(And if I am around, "I AM IGNORANT, AND WOULD LIKE TO EITHER BE EDUCATED, OR PUT LESSPOP ON IGNORE FOR AN HOUR OR SO.")

@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't know the same kinds of music as you, but the genre names for all sorts of different kinds of metal are really useful when trying to describe what a new band is like.

yeah they are

The differences might not be super apparent to someone who isn't into that kind of music, but they definitely exist.

Well, for a tangent to put us back on the topic of games
Hi-Rez (SMITE) is drunk.

Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991 is a book by Michael Azerrad. It chronicles the careers of several underground rock bands who, while finding little or no mainstream success, were hugely influential in establishing American alternative and indie rock, mostly through nearly constant touring and records released on small, regional independent record labels. Azerrad conducted many interviews with band members, and also conducted extensive research of old fanzines, as well as more mainstream newspapers and books. The inspiration for the book occurred...

1:55 AM
@Rapitor She already has enough skins. We didn't need a Nyancat one.

^^ Is a super good primer on a lot of this stuff as well.

@Rapitor those are some awfully annoying sound effects

@Chippies I think they did it on purpose to make her even more obnoxious

@Rapitor well theres just one more reasinnotto play smite

@Rapitor I haven't played Smite (been considering though), is that character always so annoying?

1:59 AM
@TheAce yeah, I want to play it less now... (i did play for a long time though)

@Chippies No; the skins also come with voice packs that change the character's sounds, if you buy that separately.

@Chippies pretty much. her voice is a particular annoying

I like Smite, though. Don't not get it because of one dumb skin.
