A: What would happen if you shifted into reverse while you are going forward?

Rory AlsopThis can be made to work well. As a teenager I tried the technique seen from Mad Max, with an old rear wheel drive car. While travelling forward at speed, press the clutch fully in, allow the engine revs to drop so no load on gears. Then change into reverse, raise the revs to a high level (think...

9:21 AM
@RoryAlsop sounds like nonsense.

9:42 AM
@IhavenoideawhatI'mdoing - Hey, you there?
@RoryAlsop - What's going on, brother?

Hi folks.

How you doing?

@BobCross - this was in an old Ford Escort. Knackered field car. Worked a treat!
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 - working a half day then 4 hours of karting coming up

Sounds awesome, lol.
I'm taking the day off. The wife stayed with the daughter at the Emergency Room last night. Daughter was having a severe migraine. So, I'm at home to take care of the adult-handicapped son while they are (hopefully) asleep.

:-(

9:49 AM
Yup. Daughter was enjoying the morphine they gave her ...
Hopefully when she gets some rest she will be okay.
She gets her Wisdom teeth out tomorrow. O ... the ... joy

10:01 AM
hello all!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 - that's never good. The very occasional times (touch wood) that my kids have had to be in hospital I hate feeling so useless. I know you can trust medical staff (my wife is one) but it's not easy
@cloudnyn3 hello

@RoryAlsop - Right on all accounts.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Hey, sure am!

Have you tried nailing the throttle while driving to see what happens?
What I'm saying is, say you are in 2nd gear, going rather fast for the gear, then just nailing the throttle.

Nothing too unusual, jerks a little and shoots forward
Jerks, as in from the sudden torque

10:14 AM
What I'm wondering, because of what you said in the comments, is making me wondering if there might be an issue with something in the suspension. Something which is making it torque over.

I'm not worried about the engine.
I'm talking about how it drives.

No idea, honestly. Could be. One thing I noticed that there is some "lash" in the front wheels when the front is up. As in, some play back and forth before the transmission resistance is felt. Might be normal, not really sure, never tried on another car. Also some unidentified creaking when the wheels are turned.
Only noticeable when turning them from the outside manually

If you have a damaged/loose A-arm or some other suspension part, it could be doing what you are talking about ... at least that's what I'm getting from this "internet diagnostic feature"

Nothing seems to be loose, judging by my unprofessional eye. Are you talking about the bouncing or the wheel lash?

10:19 AM
"D" ... all of the above.

Well, I'll have to check

If something is loose/worn (like one or more bushings), the suspension may be loading up before it actually get things moving. I'm just spitballing, though.

It could be, technically. Though I imagine it must look horrible, if it does that

You have a GoPro you can attach to view wheel areas while you are driving? :D

I have a Mobius I'm using as a dashcam, it's pretty much a GoPro. Sadly I don't have a proper mount for it. Will have to shop for one

10:29 AM
Great fun.

11:06 AM
That reminds me - need to pop both cars in for service and MOT. Mine is going to need new rear suspension bushings, window motor, gaskets and a couple of other things just to be road legal. And this is the one that is dying so I know I have to replace it... <sigh>
And my wife's has a recall on airbags

11:23 AM
morning guys

12:17 PM
80EUR for the spider spring and 6 clutch springs. Gotta love Ducati OEM.

Was that expensive? No clue.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Less expensive than 500EUR for a whole (non ducati-branded) clutch. :)
Just spent 60EUR for the spider spring. A component so cra*py that Ducati knows it breaks and suggests you to change every 5000km.

ROFL!
Is there any aftermarket part to change out the spider spring with something more resilient?
5000k? You could be changing that out as yearly maintenance.
Have about three in stock at all times.
Anyway, 60eur sounds a lot cheaper than 500eur, that's for sure (simple numbers me understands ... so long as I don't have to take my socks off)

Let's not talk about the tool used to block the clutch in order to unfasten the nut holding it, including the spider spring, together. 200EUR from Ducati. I refuse to buy that.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 That's worth asking on Mechanics.

@JoErNanO - That'd be like a shopping question to me.
If I saw it, I'd vote to close.

12:29 PM
Why? The question would be: Since this thing breaks, can I substitute it with something more resitant whilst maintaining the same mechanical properties?
No shopping involved. Mechanics, yes. :)

ROFL, nice.
My head not be functioning this morning ... guess I'll go play some shootemup game or something.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 My understanding is that it's a part of the slipping mechanism of the clutch. It's used to regulate back-torque sensitivity for the slipping action.
Or some other technical jargon like that.

LOL, sounds about right.

FYI OEM clutch disks cost ~220EUR.

12:56 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Where are the challenges for May? :)

1:06 PM
Anybody remember the movie, Hunt for Red October?

@BobCross I do.

Remember the hallway scene right before the national security advisor meeting?
"Who's giving the briefing?", asked Jack Ryan.
I am. I'm always the guy giving the briefing. My job is super weird.
In other news, when my new laptop comes back from security, I'll have more keyboards than I could use with both hands and both feet. I guess I'll learn to type with my nose....

1:27 PM
@BobCross Bob, next time you get a bright idea, just put it in a memo.
I love that movie.
I could quote lines all day. "Most things in here don't react to well to bullets."

1:42 PM
@JoErNanO - You mean you haven't put them up yet?
@BobCross - Better use your tongue as well.
@JoErNanO - I'm still trying to pay April off ...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Working on Legendary, too, I see...

@LynnCrumbling - Not at the rate I'm going.
I haven't had time to do much on here lately, so, yes, you and all others can call me a slacker.
Ducati will beat me to it, have no fear.

2:23 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Who me? I'm looking to compete, not to sponsor. You're the rich kid of Mechanics. You got plenty of rep to give away. :P

"Once more, we play our dangerous game, a game of chess against our old adversary — The American Navy."

Q: Can I return an Alamo rental car to an Enterprise location?

Darla BethanyI have a car that I rented through Alamo rental but the nearest Alamo location is over an hour from me, not to mention traffic. Can I return the Alamo car to the Enterprise (a parent company of Alamo) location 30 minutes or less from me. I am located in Newark, Texas.

right?

2:56 PM
@JoErNanO - You see who did answer that, right?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yeah but I remember discussing with @JPhi1618 about this.

My first thought ... Not a flippin' chance in hades

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2
2 days ago, by JPhi1618
@JoErNanO I like that Alamo question. It does seem dumb to an outsider, but if you've rented from them, it's pretty clear that they are the same company.

good morning. . May the 4th be with you, today. . .

YES!
Isn't actually, "May the Schwartz be with you!"
:o)

3:32 PM

3:44 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I hope your daughter gets better my friend!

She's a lot better this morning.

Good to hear.

@LynnCrumbling the one that gets a lot of play around here is "I think somebody just shot a torpedo at us!"

laugh
What a great movie...

4:10 PM
Those sure are roomy submarines, though!

4:27 PM
@BobCross You noticed that too, eh?

Yeah, there's quite a lot of movie spatial manipulation license being used in those scenes.

4:49 PM
hey guys, dropping in to say hey

@DucatiKiller howdy!

but gotta jump. Answered a question and time tomakethedonuts for the rest of the week or so. Won't be around much.
Howdy @LynnCrumbling !
So keep @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 in line while I'm lurking around on the planet.
Take care all! Later @LynnCrumbling

A: Horsepower at wheels calculation

This answer deserves some love
Take care @DucatiKiller

hey @Zaid had to get that in
Wow, that's an awesome answer! +105

A: Can't start a Kawasaki GPX 750

DucatiKillerYour carbs are clogged with varnish and bad gas The remnants of gas that has evaporated are a gummy hard varnish inside of your carburetors. You have a bit of work to do. Q: Congratulations to DucatiKiller for reaching 20k Points!

Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2We've had a lot of congrats for @DucatiKiller over the past few months. This one is special. 20k is a milestone and you've reached it brother! Great job on making this site awesome!

@Zaid - Now we just need to get you over that hump :o)

5:40 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I know, right? I'm doing what I can but some days are more barren than others

@Zaid - Most days for me recently, lol!
Ducati keeps hogging all the points!
;-)
We'll get you there soon, I'd bet.

Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2Just to post the OP's answer to get this closed out: "I just got a new battery a few months ago took the jeep up to napa they tested it n its a bad alternator."

Going through so we can close out some questions. If someone would do the honors.

Congrats on 20K DucatiKiller, time to party!

@Moab Pour me one of them whiskey's, would ya?

Only if I get to drink it
this place is like heroin, not that I would know what that is like, only from what I have read.....
Crap, I'm out of whiskey......

@Moab No prob, got some here. hard to share through the interwebs though
yeah, it get's addicting here for sure....

Another reason to make the Transporter a reality!
Hard to imagine what life would be like with one.

Pretty good to look at someone and say, "beam me up and over to London" or something

Would make bar hopping insane, and no dwi's

Your clearly all about the benefits

negativity sucks.

agreed

Has anyone done a question on how to properly rebuild a carburetor? Best procedures and so forth
Its a broad subject but basics would be helpful

I have a bunch of carb related to motorcycles. There's a bunch in here.

Q: Can't start a Kawasaki GPX 750

Evaldas B.I'm in the process of getting my 1986 Kawasaki GPX 750 back in running condition. The bike was sitting in the garage for two years. In this period it wasn't started even once. Two years ago the engine ran perfectly and I haven't tuned anything since then. What I did: Replaced all 4 sparkplugs ...

but.....nothing on a step by step procedure

9:05 PM
Yes, but a specific question on best practices would be nice.

and I can't find one for cars

I think all carbs are basically the same when rebuilding and best practices, what to look for etc.

totally agree

Ill work on it this month.

There's some weird things about individual models like on carters with those metering rods
if you ever need someone to ask a question that you want to answer, hit me up
happy to do it
Or you can ask and answer. you get a badge for that too.

9:08 PM
Just looking for general best practices that apply to all carbs, answer would be a tutorial that applies to all carbs.

It would be nice to have a good one of those to include in an answer
put it in as an instructional link

On my bucket list now.

yeah, I looked some more and can't find one that does that
lol

Best practices and rules of thumb could be applied to most repairs, these would be good to link to on other specific questions.
I have found a new part time job i think

doing what?
answering questions?

9:11 PM
Making new questions about best practices for any repair.

I was doing that for awhile
trying to ask questions where the answers could be jammed as a link into answers
here's an example

stellar answer

We need to do one on using a voltmeter and voltage drop tests in diagnosing DC circuits. learned that one at the Ford electrical school 2 week course.

oh man, would love to have attended that!

9:18 PM
Its easier than it sounds but you need a full electrical schematic of the particular car to be proficient, too much to do and so little time

I wish schematics were more available on the internet
I get pretty frustrated looking for them from time to time

Agree, we need full disclosure on that material maybe FOIA to the manufacterers, all I need is a bunch of venture capital
Ford has some of the best technician training bar none, and their electrical schematics are are the best also

would be nice to be able to get our hands on some of that stuff. They're all so tight fisted with their information.

That's why you could use the Freedom of Information Act to get the information, but not cheap. Unfortunately it is a political training system when you work for a Ford dealership, not everyone get the training.

FOIA only applies to government I thought
Not private entities, they would essentially (ford) say that the data is intellectual property (IP)

@JPhi1618 Where are you dude? Didn't see a Dr's note allowing you to not be here today.
I like these answers too for my tap and die question. I've pasted this into some answers for background info when someone snaps an old exhaust manifold bolt off at the head or something.

Q: What is a tap and die set and how do I use them?

DucatiKillerI have two questions. What is a tap and die set? and How do I use a tap and a die?

9:33 PM
@DucatiKiller Answers like that make my head hurt, there is only so much energy in any given amount of fuel. If you boil down fuel economy it is in direct relation to weight, rolling resistance and wind resistance. The lighter and less slippery the car is how much gas it will consume.

agreed, although info regarding intake diameter and what not has an effect too.

@RoryAlsop What is up.

Evening - has been a good day racing karts

@RoryAlsop congrats! A little karting I see
two strokes?
125cc?

9:36 PM
Yup - took my whole team out in Yamaha Sodi karts. These ones probably max out at 60mph-ish

I used to have a Jarno Trulli 125

Lovely

miss that thing. turned A LOT of laps on it. Went through 4 rebuilds
used the honda 125 that's in their dirtbikes
@RoryAlsop have you seen the 250cc super-karts with front brakes? They used to have a super kart race at Laguna Seca before the motogp. Saw Eddie Lawson in one. Those things are FAST!
@Moab if you want to ask tool related questions, you can goto the tags and search for tools and click on it to see what has or has not been asked. here's the results of clicking on the tool tag.

@DucatiKiller Thanks

NP
@Moab I keep forgetting you have a milion rep over at SU. You probably know about the tags....lol
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Whatup homie?

10:18 PM
@DucatiKiller not much. On my phone so limited.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Gotcha, wondered what the silence was. Chat on mobile is terrible.

Not a lot of fun. I don't like texting too much, but this is a whole different level of pain.

indeed. It's next level terrible. I feel bad now when I see your letters in here right now.

No worries. It's just me. You doing well?
Anything planned for the weekend?
My daughter gets her wisdom teeth out tomorrow, so I won't be back to work until Monday.

ahhh...wisdom teeth. brutal.
Doing well, in the middle of a couple of DC migrations and preparing for a BGP failover test late tonight. have two more projects onboarding this week so I'm crushed for a few weeks. I'm surprised I'm even in here now.
It's going to be tough to come around because most of the customers don't allow split vpn tunnels and have super tight content management platforms when browsing the internet through their networks.
