@BobCross I know you're fairly experienced with cars and I know you happen to live in RI, where I am, so I'm wondering if you happen to know whether the bill of sale has to be notarized in RI when you're buying a used car from an individual?

everything i've read online tells me RI does not, including specific, complete lists of which states require notarization, and the DMV site doesn't mention it, but one or two people I know have said they believe it's required

@Aerovistae the only transfer of title that I've had to deal with in RI was a gift rather than a purchase (passing granddad car on to grandson). That wasn't a bill of sale, obviously.

Frankly, the best luck I've had is going to the DMV and being very nice. They've been super helpful in terms of letting me know exactly what paperwork I need (including the time that I forgot to bring proof of insurance for my son's driving test. Got it on your phone? Good! That's enough!)

@Zaid @Zshoulders one of the gargages round here was open (it's bank holiday monday so most are closed)

they checked the obc? odb? whatever it is, and the codes showed it was the sensor on the tranmission valve, i got a photo of the readings in a sec

anyway, chatted to em for awhile, was gonna book it in and then he just decided to try and see how accessible it was - managed to give it a good clean out

so now it's a bit of a waiting game

I think I have a good question I'll post once I'm back in the uk and have a picture. My Yamaha Super Tenere 750 has been mostly rebuilt, but there is one thing the garage are finding difficult/expensive and have suggested I do. The rubber grommet connecting the air box to the engine will not fit and I need to find a way to either make it fit or make one that does fit.
