12:00 AM
I wouldn't even have a clue as to where to start solving it, lol.

amusingly, a google search for Hypermegamix 3 comes up with car/music videos
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 once you extrapolate the 3x3x3 to the 4x4x4, the rest are just continuations. More complicated and I think really difficult if you want to remember the fast permutations, but straightforward to slog through using the same moves you have for basic cubes
we have a nice one of these, that is quite fun to solve. Folks think it is difficult, but it's actually really fast:
things twist in odd directions as you turn each face

So I tell my wife I'm thinking of building a V8 snowblower ... her response? ABSOLUTELY NOT

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 That's a real shocker

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 lol - tell her you have a ready audience awaiting build photos

ROFL!
YES I DO DARN IT!!
Her reasoning was she needs to be able to maneuver it to be able to use it if I'm not at home. I'm thinking, "Woman, you wouldn't be able to handle any snowblower I'd be willing to get."

12:09 AM
I had to respond to Mason
Mason - I would disagree. I find automatic transmissions much more dangerous than manual transmission. They remove some of your control. As a driver I care about specific feelings from every aspect of the car - for me a car which plans to do its own thing is inherently bad. Let's hope they remain unpopular in Europe for many years to come! — Rory Alsop 21 secs ago
...argumentative, moi?

LMAO
subjective
fair
not dickish

I sound't think so ... but wondering if Bob is going to put the "close hammer" down upon its head (the question) for being too much of an opinion draw.

It's an opinion magnet for sure
@RoryAlsop You watch Ted's Notebook on Sky....F1?

well, for the US I think there is a valid answer: manuals are vanishing, yes
@DucatiKiller yep

Lovethatguy
He has a good "new F1 tire rules" piece

12:14 AM
yeah - a couple of the side programmes are pretty good. The classic F1 stuff is awesome as well - last year they did a big piece on Stirling Moss, and another one on Surtees
@DucatiKiller haven't seen that yet - I'll make sure I do

Here you go
The Moss and Surtees pieces were brilliant.
I look forward to all of his reports from pre season testing

@DucatiKiller opened in new tab ready for tomorrow - I am being told it's time for bed.
Night all!

catch you later

@RoryAlsop - Night brother.
@DucatiKiller - I missed a 200 point day by 5 points, lol :o)

OMG
I had one last week where I was 198
and I downvoted two questions that day
LMAO

12:18 AM
Kick yourself for it, eh?
That was you over there upvoting my posts on Movies.SE?

I went through a bunch of your respsonses
good stuff

Yah, I really love movies, but there is an element over there which doesn't like people if they aren't in the movie industry or something. I got tired of getting beat up about stupid things.

really? That's weird. I wouldn't like that either
sounds pretentious

12:21 AM
Yah, and two of the biggest offenders are Mods

Gross

But that is my opinion
It's the way it seems to happen ... may just be how I'm observing it and not actuality.

certainly but at the end of the day pretentious is pretentious...snobby is snobby...and so on

I don't want to sound biased, but at least one of the two is Indian (forgive me Anarach!) ... I've met way too many people from India who are exactly like that ... pretentious.
Maybe it's just a cultural difference, I don't know ... maybe somethings I just don't understand.
Like I said though, it's probably my issue, not theirs.

sure.
Film School snobs and what not

12:28 AM
LOL! ROFL! Yes, that's it.
Mechanics have no place in their world.

Do you have a DVR?

Oh yes.
Don't leave home without it!

I am going to to try and talk you into subscribing to Formula 1 for the 2016 season
There's a new American team

ROFL! That's all I need.

Haas from NASCAR
He's running a Ferrari engine

12:29 AM
Hey, so I was going to ask you. You are from the Phoenix area (north of there) right?

yes, North of Phoenix

My wife was trying to get me to find a job out there in your area.

Lot's of jobs out here but you have to be able to take the heat. It's 3 months of brutal.

It's the heat which she wants.

Then this is your place

12:31 AM
Ayup.
I should at least give it a gander and see what's up.
How is tech out there?

I love Arizona...Phoenix is ok but I'm love the outdoors and Arizona is fantastic for outdoor activity
Tech is pretty good. There's a wide range. I know a lot of software developers that work for GoDaddy, PayPal, Amazon, American Airlines that work remotely
Although American Airlines has a big footprint of resources our here as they purchased America West a year or so ago

I think I'd have to go back to the real world to work, as the government (at least where I work) only has a couple of positions down at Yuma.

Xerox has a lot of people out here too as does AmEx
Yeah, this is not a big government job center

it's Private Sector all the way out here
Lot's of data centers

12:34 AM
I'm close enough to a government pension I don't want to throw that away. I should be able to retire from the government in the next four years if I want to.

Oh man
I'd do the 4 years. That will pay off for the rest of your life
Then make the move and it's all double gravy from there

Mind you it wouldn't be huge, but it would be permanent.

That monthly check for the rest of your life will add up big. Imagine talking ALL of that check and investing with it

Taking that check and doing ... anything with it ... yes.

That's a lot of security

12:37 AM
Ayup

tough decision
I will say that I love the west

But I could "retire" out in that area, that's for sure. Mind you when I say retire, I mean retire from the Government ... I doubt I'll ever be able to stop working, whether I need money or not.
Oh, I love the west as well.

Indeed, allows you to be more picky about your next job and create a situation for yourself that more to your individual liking.
There's a good tech footprint out here and nowadays it really doesn't matter. Even if they are a marketing company they need IT workers. We are a fixture of the modern economy, everyone needs us.

cost of living out here --- pretty darn good. Pay out here ---- really good
outdoor activity - awesome

12:39 AM
Snot ... I need to start looking :o)

proximity to LA, Mexico, SF, SD, Colorado ---- great
Decent car culture, lot's of scottsdale collectors with private collections
lots of them

I've been to at least one wrecking yard in Tucson which had parts for a 68 Chevelle I used to own ... i needed a front bumper. I pulled it off the donor car. Cost me about $80 IIRC, but that was over 20 years ago, lol.

The nice thing about car junk yards out here, low salt. Low rain. Stuff sits for years and the core is fine.

Absolutely

I got a head for a 1969 (i think) two stroke suzuki a few weeks ago. It was fine. A little blemished..
cleaned it up, painted it
On it's way

12:43 AM
Nice
Believe me when I say, if I end up heading your way, I'll let you know.

Indeed

And you'll have another person you'll want to avoid!

Have you and your wife vacationed out here before? I imagine so if she states she likes it here.
LOL

I spent two stints of 4 months in Ft Huachuca ... and my Mom-n-Law lived in Tucson.

Your prediction came true. The transmission question had the close hammer brought down upon it.

12:46 AM
Good

So your wife is pretty familiar I take it?
Doh, I have a gaggle of people at my door. Weird. Like 9 people I know just rolled up.
I guess this is my cue to head out

No worries! Enjoy your peeps

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I'll catch up with you soon.

visit Phx w/ the gal
:-)

12:48 AM
Yup
I may go out searching for jobs tonight.

I'm trying to think of a way to answer this question that can't be summarized as "so as not to be a damn fool."

Q: What's the point of servicing a car?

Matt ThrowerAs you can probably tell from the question, I know almost nothing about motor vehicles. So apologies for my ignorance but I wasn't sure where else I might get this question answered impartially. Manufacturers recommend that cars are serviced at various time/mileage intervals and garages offer va...

Congrats to our third successful challenge completion! ... @Ppoggio for your completion of the Electorate badge challenge! Great job! — ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 31 mins ago
@BobCross - Good luck with that ... was thinking the same thing the whole time I was writing my answer to it.
I was hoping OPM would pop as to whether the Gov is going to be closed tomorrow or not.
Still pretty ugly down here.
And we are slated to get more ice in the coming hours.

10 hours later…
12:59 PM
G'day friends

Hi @JonathanMusso

@Zaid Howdy! How are you Zaid?

I'm good thanks. Yourself?

Great! We got dumped with a bit more snow, though. Looks like it won't be staying long anyway.

1:22 PM
We had the strangest weather here this weekend. Two days ago, it was -10F. Today, it's going to be above 50F. The whole state is a mud puddle.
For those who live in the land of Celsiuis, those temperatures are equivalent to "really quite dangerously cold without protection" and "well, I suppose an Australian would still consider it chilly but that's about it." ;-)

Questions like this worry me -
22
Q: Do long commutes count against personal or work hours?

scientific_developerMy employer (science) has several sites. One is in Cambridge MA, where some colleagues tell me their one-way commute is in excess of an hour. I've even heard that a few colleagues commute up to 2 hrs one-way. Maybe they're able to get some work done if they commute on Amtrak, but I'm guessing not...

How do you not know that? Where in the world is your personal commute time going to count against work hours?
And this person is in a PhD program?
Of course half the questions on Workplace make me feel the same way.

3:22 PM
@JPhi1618 maybe I have lived a sheltered life, but in what world do you get paid for commute times? I mean really... I know some lazy butts that would move further away from work if they got paid by the hour to commute. Now when I teach at a class site further away than 2 hours I get paid hourly for travel time, and I think that's required by law here in NC, but travel to your normal place of work isn't compensated at all.
Can you image the cost and the overtime if they paid for commute times in LA

Ha, I know.
That poster was talking about people with a 2hr one-way commute. So they get paid for 4-hours of work?
I'm smart enough to not live in the middle of nowhere, so I have to work 7 hours?

I completely agree with him on the personal time aspect, but that's factored into whether you take the job or not

Exactly. My current job is a 30-mile commute and tollways the whole way. I certainly figured that extra $250/month into my offer.

@JPhi1618 Well that depends, because if that means I only have to work for 4 hours at work I might move 4 hours away :) Just pay me to drive back and forth

(I didn't mention it to them - I just knew it would be an expense)
Ha, I had that thought as well.

3:27 PM
@JPhi1618 exactly, you could use it as a negotiation point if you wanted to to get more money possible but at a minimum you have to factor it in for yourself.
In other news this has the potential for reopening IMHO, but I don't feel strongly enough to do it on my own. So I am looking for input/support

Q: How durable are engines at maximum power

AutisticThe maximum horsepower figures of most car engines have been high for many decades. How long would an engine last on the dyno when making max HP ? How would this expected life drop when aftermarket performance mods are added? Would large old V8 motors like stock chev 350 be better in this respect...

It's just... so broad?
Every engine is going to be differnet.

@JPhi1618 But the edit made the question if I am going to use an automotive engine for a generator does it have to be detuned. I think there is potential for a good question here, but I guess it still needs some refining. Which is why I asked here instead of reopening it on my own.

Man, I had to re-read to see that - still needs some grammar/format edits to make it clear.
Plus, I guess he's not really talking about max HP anymore if he wants it to be governed to something like 3000RPM?
Or governed to a reasonable RPM...
I know I can cruise at 70mph in my car for a basically unlimited amount of time, so using it in a generator seems reasonable if you remove the talk about Max HP on a dyno.

4:17 PM
@Movemorecommentslinktotop nice to see you around

5:02 PM
@Zaid Thanks, Personal life has taken all my time an energy, handling flags is about all I've had time for lately.
@JPhi1618 Yeah, I was looking more that to potential of the question. I am a glass half full guy so I don't see some of the problems at first.

Nothing wrong with that. Need it to balance out the quick-to-dismiss crowd.

Q: Ducati ST4s not starting

user4219I ride a 2002 ST4s that was bought new in 2008 and has now travelled 8800km. I have fitted a power commander and carbon mufflers and done some minor alterations to the air box. Spent some time setting up suspension and am generally happy with the results. There has been an intermittent problem a...

Hi all

@DucatiKiller, a 2002, "bought new in 2008"... What?
(Old I know...)
Hope he didn't pay MSRP, lol.

1 hour later…
6:25 PM
@JPhi1618 Indeed! It has the good old air cooled motor in it too. Nice nostalgia but performance......not so good.

Do you think he really bought it new after 6 years?

6:40 PM
It's possible. Those models languished a bit because of the air cooled motor in a sport touring package. I once bought a new on the showroom 1982 Suzuki in 1988.

That's crazy. I had no idea there would be that kind of lag.
Was it priced like "new"?
(because I'm sure you remember that from 28 years ago...)

No, I think they lost money it and just needed to move it. It was 1/3 full price.

Wow, that's crazy.

You see that happen from time to time with particular MC models on showrooms, especially smaller dealerships.

Did you need to do any work on it? Or did it just run?
Interesting.

6:51 PM
No, It was fine. It was 'dry' on the showroom other than engine oil

Yea, I guess so. That stops a lot of bad things from happening.

That surely must happen on car lots too with some models, right?

Maybe 1 year old...
I can't believe it's ever happened more than 2 years old. They really have to move cars.

They really try and 'blow them out' at tent sales and what not end of year so your prob right

It's rare to see it happen

6:53 PM
Lot more carrying expense - if anything they would send it to auction, I bet.

Flooring costs

Now, I bet it happens with RV's.

I recently visited a once-upon-a-time official VW dealer. They still had a couple of zero mileage 2006 Audi A8's

Ha, that's cool.
I'd buy a zero mile A8.
(with a warranty - electronics aren't going to get better over time)

I wonder how much they would discount something like that?
Yeah, it wouldn't even have bluetooth

6:55 PM
What? low mile Audis appreciate!
:P

@Zaid I'm having a hard time being motivated to work on tag-wiki's

@DucatiKiller, are you upvoting a lot right now?

@DucatiKiller I'm having a hard time finding time

I just went through some of your answers. I haven't hardly been around and a lot of questions have happened. So I go through the main players answers and check them out all at once.
I have to be careful of serial voting when I do that though.
@Zaid Me too. I'm in here and on the phone and I have a TON of technical writing built up in a cue....
Our QPD is dropping. I'm trying to think of a few decent questions to toss out.
If anyone has a question they would like asked, tell me. I'll throw it out for you.

7:20 PM
@DucatiKiller I've got a ton of them on the Sandbox

 mech.SE Questions Sandbox

A place to list, discuss and critique potential questions for ...

Do you want some of those asked? Do you have the time right now?

I'll put one up

Interesting. Our guy Jon Ericson did the feature request for three of the question badges
136
Q: Asking days badges

Jon EricsonA couple of months ago, I suggested a set of badges for asking questions. The responses were... mixed. The top answer can be summarized: In practice, all this would do is encourage people to ask yet more stupid, worthless questions and we have quite enough of that as it is. We believe that ...

It would be nice to see the tag-wiki's somehow get better. Badges, more visible. Something....

8:03 PM
@Zaid, are you going to answer that starter question?

8:15 PM
Hello. It has puzzled me how some new questions only get a few views, and yet others can get 4K views in one day, for example the question on "why service a car". Can anyone explain that?

@JPhi1618 no I was hoping to learn from someone

@HandyHowie There are quite a few reasons that happens
1. more upvotes and activity can get a question into the 'hot questions' feed for all of the SE sites

Google results!

2. Multiple answers will also help a question get into the 'hot questions'

@HandyHowie, my personal theory on that particular question is that it falls into a category of "such a simple question that people have to look and see why anyone would even ask that".

8:21 PM
views from non registered users are also counted , right?

3. Once it's in the 'hot questions' feed then it lights up and gets a ton of views
@chilljeet yes

@HandyHowie, for instance, I would put this question in the same category:
7
Q: What are the easiest methods to carry a backpack when cycling?

WedaPashiThis question might be flanked by The Great Outdoors and Bicycles, yet I'll ask. When I am off for a mountain-biking thing, I usually have a backpack with me which contains clothing, medical kit, basic toolkit for repair, tarp, sleeping bag, food and water, etc. What would be the ideal method ...

Because just seeing the question title, the obvious thought is "ON YOUR BACK! What is this guy even talking about ?!"

@HandyHowie Are you familiar with the Hot Questions feed?

That would explain it, so visitors to other sites will see the question and have a look. It did seem strange that this site was getting so many visitors.

Yes
The voting drives change of a page and page change is one of the metrics of SEO that drives a page up the order. So the more voting, the more answers and edits on a page will help to get better search engine results as well.
Our site analytics show the page views skyrocketted when our voting got turned up within the site. That's when all of a sudden a bunch of our questions started to make it into the feed

8:29 PM
I have seen the hot questions, but I have never really taken any notice of it, most of the things seem trivial like "why does wolverine drink alcohol" that is on there now.

I love the HNQ.
I have to click on most of them.

Me too

I read that whole Wolverine one, lol.

I have seen the hot questions, but I have never really taken any notice of it, most of the things seem trivial like "why does wolverine drink alcohol" that is on there now.

8:30 PM
I even feel compelled to throw an answer in once in awhile

Alright, rubio...

@HandyHowie LMAO...
There are some good ones that pop up though

Oops, somehow posted my comment twice.

Man, half of my SE accounts are because I had to comment on a HNQ
I posted an answer that is killing it over on DIY today. +8 already.
Thanks HNQ!

On a different subject, the question @zaid posted about jumping the starter, is he just making up questions to stimulate answers to things he already knows the answer?

8:34 PM
I asked him that and he said he really wanted an informed answer.
I'm sure he knows the basic concept, but wants a good answer from an experienced person.
I've done the same thing where something occurred to me and I wanted to get an "informed" explanation rather than just relying on a Google search.

I have been expecting him to post an in depth answer with photos etc.

I figured other people would be interested, etc.

8:51 PM
well it took me a while to find the right one ($480 being the right one)
but i found a parts car for my 81 el dorado
hopefully that means it will be off the jack stands, on the new wheels, and out of the garage

@HandyHowie the question has already been answered :)
I love the MS Paint skills :)
@DavidWinslow go for it bro!
Been a while since we saw you check in... You have no idea how busy things have gotten lately

@Zaid, better picture would be better.

@Zaid looks like the activity in here is picking up. thats great
im going to need help putting my eldo body on a corvette chassis :D (jk)

9:11 PM
I say jack it up and make a Monsterado™.
Damn looks like that might be used for monster versions of a Silverado.
Nevermind.

9:25 PM
i would totally do that to a car if i knew how
ive seen it done on eldawgs and el caminos looks cool each time

Ha, exactly.

@DavidWinslow - I'm glad you think that's cool, because I think it's an abomination! :o)

more seriously, if i knew i could swap my body to a new frame id want to go RWD
because swapping a more modern drive train in the eldo is seeming really overwhelming

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, don't hate! Monster conversions are always cool.

the configuration of the 4t* transaxles is different than the TH325 that is in it

9:35 PM
@JPhi1618 - It's just the truth ... no hate involved! ;-)
Now it's time to eat, lol! :D

Ha, ok.
Thanks for stopping by.

Caught by surprise, actually.

@HandyHowie regarding that Zaid question. Sometimes we are asking questions so we can get a good wiki answer to shore up the tag-wiki's and are too lazy to write it ourselves. It's also more community driven that way.

There's your new profile pic @DucatiKiller

@JPhi1618 I think your right
@JPhi1618 there we go. It's excellent

9:46 PM
THAT'S AWESOME!!!

I feel privilaged

Ha, nice.
Can you crop it so it's more of the front?
I can if not.

If you could, I'm on a con call, taking notes
lol

There, nice and square.

yes, better

9:49 PM
Nice and awesome!
The yellow just sort of sets it off if you ask me.

ha, indeed.

there it is
takes a few to sync
The ducati red beak is a nice touch

@JPhi1618 I took a stab at that coolant boiling question
Feel free to suggest edits to my answer :)

Ok, a quick read is just what I was thinking.
I was hoping the OP would reply, but I guess I did ask for them to do a procedure, so probably not likely to happen quickly.
I mean that after reading it quickly, it looks like what I would have answered with.

@LynnCrumbling Nice answer

10:01 PM
I guess I should tack on, "And yes, you probably blew the gasket on your thermostat"
Ok, edited to address thermostat.
Thanks @DucatiKiller

@zaid Your question has got people commenting. You're right, finding time to join in the conversations has been difficult. I was in the process of replying to you earlier and someone called to see me.
@DucatiKiller I will have to think of a few questions.

Does Ben ever stop in here?
He seems to be commenting a lot...

@HandyHowie Here's one of mine that wound up in the feed when the US had our first big snow on the east coast
36
Q: What is the most efficient method of getting your car unstuck from snow?

DucatiKillerIf your car is stuck in snow and you don't have any chains, what can be done to get it out? This can be an unnerving problem to have and it happens pretty easily with normal driving on ice. You wind up in a snowbank sliding into it at 10 mph or any number of scenarios. What are some tools I ca...

It just went crazy.
I have nothing else that's come close in terms of votes.

Not only was it during the snow storm, it was during the peak season of January where we were seeing a ton of activity on the site. Things have settled down a little since then.

A: What actually happens when there is not enough oil in a car engine?

ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2Engine oil does much more for an engine than lubricate. It provides cooling, cleaning, and a bunch of other chores. You already know engine function is degraded when you run out of oil. Let's see if we can run it down to make more sense for you how it happens. Let's say, for lack of argument, y...

I had a good run with that answer ... eclipsed my previous high score by a few in just a couple of days.

10:16 PM
huh.. Go Treads...

@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I remember when that one was soaring.

@DucatiKiller man.. those comments are brutal....

@DucatiKiller - Both happened around the same time.

@LynnCrumbling The comments to Max's answer?

@DucatiKiller - Oh, this hurts ...

10:22 PM
@DucatiKiller No, the comments on that YouTube video to Ashcroft singing...

That's the whole point. It's beautifully awkward.

If you insist

LMAO....oh those. Yes, next level brutal...LOL

And, I'm out. :) Have a great night all...
Yes, those :)

later Lynn!

10:23 PM
'night

later Lynn
@ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 You don't feel a little uncomfortable for him while you watch the video?

Wow, Ducati, I can only take soooooo much of that ... had to shut it off.
@DucatiKiller - No. Not if he's stupid enough to do it in the first place. Whomever enticed him into singing that should have been shot (figuratively). If he did it of his own accord, he needed not to given up his day job.

LOL...it's a painful experience
Apparently he finished up a press conference with that number. Pretty bold.

Uh ... bold ... yah, that might be one way to put it.

I wouldn't have the balls to do it. Get up at a press conference filled with reporters and sing. No way. I could talk but not sing....
As David Hobbs would say, "he has large attachments."

10:28 PM
Dangling with the dingleberries

truth @ᴘᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 truth....

:D
You are in a fine humor today!

It's the duck from @JPhi1618 It set me off
or should I say Duc?

Made you fell all Duckie did it?
:D
Quack!

that's it man. Ducky.
Holy Crap!!!!!!
Someone is selling this!
How the hell does someone think that's a good idea?
here's a better link
WTF are these people thinking?

10:33 PM
Haha, and whoever did it is stupid.
The put the swastikas on backwards

I'll bet you this is a 4chan thing
screw that
deleted it
doesnt need to be in here

What they actually put on there are Roman party symbols, lol ... what Hitler used as a basis for his swastika
They found them in the Roman bath houses in England.\
Hilariously STUPID!

more than likely it's a 4chan thing

I have no clue what 4chan is, and probably don't want to know.

4chan is an English-language imageboard website. Users generally post anonymously, with the most recent posts appearing above the rest. 4chan is split into various boards with their own specific content and guidelines. Sounds about right ... simply not a place I'm gunna attend.
