@RoryAlsop - I try very hard to not be "less than friendly" here on Mech. I really don't want us to become that way.
If I ever become that way, you have my permission to fly across the pond and Denozo slap me.

@Paulster2, nope. Sea level. Splash splash. That's the sound that sea makes.

2:04 AM
@BobCross - Yes, splash = Sea Level ... what was I thinking.

Q: Is a water-logged brake booster salvageable?

ZaidLast week water found its way into my M5's brake booster. The M5 forums document that people who have suffered from a similar problem will replace their brake booster to fix it. No mention is made of whether the brake booster is actually salvageable. Is it possible that the brake booster can be...

12:08 PM
@Zaid - It's trashed ... replace it.

@Paulster2 Hello

J/K!!! I have no idea really. I don't know if there are any perishable items within the booster which would be killed due to the moisture.

The dealer quoted $1000

You could possible use some alcohol to absorb any residual moisture and go that route. It isn't like if the booster fails, your brakes die.
Do you have the reason for why the moisture got into the booster in the first place?

Yes, heavy rain

12:11 PM
But how?
The booster should be sealed.

I don't know
Maybe the vacuum hose is perished

Then you don't know if it'll happen again when another big rainstorm comes along ... I guess you could even expect it to happen again.

I'm just waiting for my vacation to start so that I can address it

My suggestion is to clean out the moisture using alcohol, then see if there is anything you can address (to fix), then replace the booster and see if it's working. I'd bet there isn't any long term damage, but that's an approximation.
As long as the water hasn't been in the booster for a long period of time, you shouldn't have too much to worry about ... but I'd get it cleaned out sooner rather than later.
I'm not going to be able to stick around, but hope you have a great day. Let me know what you decide on it, though.

@Paulster2 It'll have to wait for a few more days unfortunately
Thanks for the advice though, hope you have a great day

12:16 PM
The longer you wait, the more damage could result ... but I doubt a few days is going to make much of a difference.
:D

It's already been 5 days

Oh, it's dead for sure :P

All the more reason for me to rip into it then :)

Ayup :D Later.

"If draining the tank becomes a yearly habit, there’s a good chance you’re shortening the lifespan of your lawn mower and other tools, and may accidentally put your family in danger."
That's right. Your entire family could die if you don't take care of your lawn mower's fuel system.

@JPhi1618 Hahahahaha

Also, just realized it was written by the company that owns Sta-bil.

If you read it like Clarence Barnes from Lincoln Tech people will believe every single word you say :)

Yea, I can't figure out how not using sta-bil is a danger to my family.
Just seems so random in that "article".

At 1:00 or so, you'll get a moment of enlightenment from the man himself

heh, nice.
What did you decide on the brake booster?
Does it come apart for inspection or is it glued/crimped/etc?

@JPhi1618 I can see a tab from the top. Need to source a replacement first

6:08 PM
Finally earned the coveted Electorate badge. The Picard is pleased

Does that mean you were elected to something?
Nevermind... Found it.

I think I earned it after upvoting your interference engine question

6:23 PM
Ok, nice.
is it 600 here?

Yes... Beta has its "perks"

Q: Non-interference engine explanation animation/Videos?

user2647763Non-interference engine explanation animation/Videos ? I did ask my Toyota dealer about published material on 1999 Camry 2.2 non-interference engine that did not cause piston hitting valves/ valve bent condition during timing belt slipping off spindle event. They did not find any. I searched to...

@JPhi1618 Is this your question?

Yes
Wait...
No, mine was posted today.

I think we need a Q&A on interference vs non-interference

I know what the difference is - just wasn't sure if it was ok to just let a non-interference go.

It gets asked quite frequently in different ways

6:30 PM
Yea, that is a common question with some bad info out there.

Will be useful to point to the Q&A for future answers

6:41 PM
@JPhi1618 Which question title is catchier?
- What is an interference engine? What is a non-interference engine?
- What is the difference between interference and non-interference engines?
- Interference vs non-interference engines

Interference engines = cool piston engines. Non-interference = Wankels. There, done!

@BobCross do I detect some outside-the-box thinking? :)

Technically, an electric motor is an interference engine. Man, those things make all kinds of interference! rimshot

Oooh, more like a slam dunk :D
@BobCross Come to think of it, jet engines too

@Zaid, Leaning towards "What is the difference between interference and non-interference engines?", but also like the brevity of the last one.

6:50 PM
Sorry, I've been exploring the depths of my own idiocy all day. Why doesn't this code work? Because I am the stupidest man who's still able to get himself to work. :-p

What are you coding, Bob?

How's this for the question?
What do people mean when they say that an engine has an *interference* design? How does it differ from a *non-interference* engine?

Is it correct to say that one is more reliable than the other?

I'm writing the data recording layer that will sit early in my network pipeline and archive raw data as it comes in from the ... Things.
And I'm struggling with writing data generators that simulate all the bad cases that I want to handle for testing
And I'm a dummo

@BobCross Have you heard of TAP (Test Anything Protocol)?
testanything.org

I'm using the WTF protocol today.

6:56 PM
WTF = Write To Fail, I presume ;)
Or is it Work To Fail? :D

It's a very percussive protocol. You smack the desk a lot and ask the universe "what the f@ck?!"

@BobCross Oh, that protocol. Is it a solo piece or part of a choir?

It's especially fun when the vendor's documentation is different for the actual behavior of the thing. This creates a fascinating mystery for you to solve. It's a journey of discovery!

Well, at least you're coding and not acting in the capacity of business analyst because your project is suffering from anaemic funding
I've recently been reminded of the travails involved in getting customers to articulate what they need or (more puzzlingly) what they don't

About time they came out with part 4, lol. I really get tired of waiting on Marty and Moog, lol!
