Q: Should "general weight loss advice" be on-topic?

GregAs a follow-up to What should our FAQ contain?, should "general weight loss advice" be included in the off-topic list? It seems to me that weight control is an essential part of fitness, and applicable to almost any sport. Because the application is so broad, it doesn't make sense to me to have t...

@IvoFlipse i was starting to write an answer to that last night, still fleshing it out

I think that a question about weight loss that doesn't involve exercise can only mean it will only involve food, which was the main point of getting rid of them

user11126
okay, i wasn't sure what the context of that was, i couldn't remember what the details of it were

Well I meant the whole FAQ change in general was aimed at keeping those questions out
I can imagine some 'general diet' questions, which have more to do with motivation, tracking progress, setting goals or whatnot
but how do I phrase it so that such questions would be allowed and a question like: "how much of X can I when I want to lose Y pounds?"

user11126
wait, is that get fit guy on huffington post?

4:15 PM
Yup
He linked to it on Twitter

@IvoFlipse who decides graduation for the site?

7:08 PM
@MattChan "The team"

user11126
@IvoFlipse ah, okay, "the powers that be"

yeah
they're reviewing some of the newer sites though to see how its going
by simply picking some random questions

user11126
i was perusing the meta and also looking at some very old questions on our site

user11126
the type of questions back in the early days are waaaay different than now

I don't think we're doing great on getting superb answers to most questions, but then again, some of these questions are hard

user11126

true, and we don't have the experts, chicken+egg problem

user11126
long story short, i've been on a big train of thought today

Q: My Weight Loss Diet - Opinions?

JoshwaaI eat: At least 2 chicken breasts a day. Usually a pack of noodles and a flour wrap. 2-4 Chocolate wheetabix. Bear in mind that I used to eat over 3000 calories a day and do no exercise, whereas I exercise every day now. I'm 16. If I ever want a snack I'll eat some Snackajacks or...

Q: Can vinegar cause fat loss?

tjjjohnsonI keep hearing about vinegar being used for weight loss. There is at least one study to back this up. Here's a link to the study: Vinegar Intake Reduces Body Weight, Body Fat Mass, and Serum Triglyceride Levels in Obese Japanese Subjects Has anyone tried this or heard of other studies?

Q: Does lactose inhibit fat loss?

GregIn Tim Ferriss' The Four Hour Body, the claim is made that lactose intake seems to inhibit fat loss. Note that it is not claimed that it causes fat gain. Like many claims in this book, it is (and the author is upfront about this) anecdotal and he does not provide an explanation for why it might b...

Granted, some of these examples are very old
but then again I only searched for "Weight loss"

user11126
yeah i saw those too

I guess the conclusion could go two ways: either we can drop it from the FAQ, because we won't encounter those questions frequently enough to care
or we keep it in there, because when we do encounter them, they're not what we're looking for

user11126
it doesn't seem like we have been getting these type of questions lately

especially given that nearly every question we do get is related to exercise

user11126
does $BLAH <action_verb> $BLEH

Q: What's the healthiest nut?

GabeIs there a "healthiest" nut? Or some that are more nutritious than others? I suppose it depends on the individual's end goal. I've heard cashews don't have as much nutritious value than regular peanuts (just hearsay, no source that I've seen). I'm mostly interested in a healthy nut that with enou...

Q: High fiber but low carbs

oshirowanenI'm trying to put together a nutritional plan for myself for weight loss but am finding it difficult to incorporate fibre without overdoing the carbs. Which foods are high in fibre yet low in carbs?

user11126
some of those food questions would be covered by "nutrition unrelated to fitness"

probably
in which case I reckon we could drop it from the FAQ

user11126
there is also part of the faq that states that chatty open-ended questions are bad

Well feel free to sum up our conclusions in Greg's question and we can edit it out of the FAQ
