Q: Comment-Answers

ringoI've noticed a recent trend of people answering questions in the comments. I've asked about this issue in the past, and though I understand that sometimes people don't want to write out a complete answer, the entire premise of Stack Exchange is "ask questions, get answers," NOT "ask questions, ge...

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Ah. My urban is just not good enough.
Hi @Mith o/

\o/
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I had to go on friday before TRE was supposed to start; I see that you canceled it :(

@Mithoron Not cancelling. There's really not much left to do.
We'll come in episode 2 with some other stuff to do.

What is a homework question?—Please answer, even if it's not going to be comprehensive. The lack of activity and the drive-by downvotes are starting to annoy me.

@jonsca @manish (because Mart is on holiday) sorry if you have to decline my comment flag on this comment ^^'
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Going to, just wasn't ready enough yet … ^^'

@Jan Neither got the ping . . .

Jan
I guessed so; none ever showed up here, did they?

Manish was pingable last week.
At least we do have a mod that'll visit chat.

Jan
Yabbut that mod is on holiday, so they'll reject the flag before Mart sees the ping ^^
Although if I'm honest I'm not entirely sure whether they actually process flags because one of mine has been pending for like forever since Mart left xD

Hehe

Oh maybe @Loong knows if there is an all-mods chat or any other place where a mod on one site can contact any diamond mod on another?

@Jan Teacher's Lounge is a seekrit chatroom where all mods go hang.

Jan
I'm scared that @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. knows the answer to a moddistic question, and I'm also scared that @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. knows the answer to a question directed @IUPAC Ó____Ò

ಠ_ಠ ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
Furthermore, @Jan, I know that a bot runs there that notifies all the mods of a site if necessary.

Jan
user quit channel. ("this @Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. guy is scaring me!")

6:38 PM
@Jan now that you're scared, I demand that you edit this shipwreck.

Jan
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Too scared to do that.

@Jan how are you doing? how is your thesis going?

Jan
@TanMath Badly. Don't ask ~.~

Jan
8:26 PM
@IUPAC please confirm my latest answer confirms with your rules xD

@Jan looks good. You might want to add the current value of the Avogardo constant, which still has to be determined experimentally.
(therefore, this value has an uncertainty)

Jan
@Loong Done.

@Jan :-)
@Jan In Appendix 1, page 157 of the English SI Brochure (page 65 of the pdf), you can find the English translation of all three points.

8:41 PM
@Loong Tu n'aime pas de langue francais? ;)

@Mithoron Je l'adore ! :-)

Jan
@Mithoron Et moi aussi !

:D

I worked seven years for a French company.

Jan
Donc j'étais très heureux d'avoir la possibilité d'écrire une réponse en français =3
I had French at school for seven years. Not quite the same thing xD

8:44 PM
Maybe we make f-block elements :)

@Jan In school, my French was terrible.

I only had 3 years many years ago :(

Jan
This allows us to also add Spanish, Portugese and Dutch but then we are out of elements D=

Why not p for Polish :)

Jan
Because my Western-centristic mind arrived at Portugal first ^^'
I need another four upvotes until midnight UTC. I'm counting on you, guys ;)

8:48 PM
Well, more people know Portugese, but is there anyone on chat?

Jan
Also, see ya o/
Gotta go!

bye!

@jan what was wrong about "amount"?

Jan
11:01 PM
@Loong See MaxW's comment.
I can change it back if you think it is better. I was confused too, but Wiktionary seems to back MaxW.

@Jan yeah, I saw the comment, and I'm confused what it is supposed to mean.

Jan
Noun: amount ‎(plural amounts)
  1. The total, aggregate or sum of material (not applicable to discrete numbers or units or items in standard English).
  2. A quantity or volume.
  3. (nonstandard, sometimes proscribed) The number (the sum) of elements in a set.
Verb: amount ‎(third-person singular simple present amounts, present participle amounting, simple past and past participle amounted)
  1. (intransitive, followed by to) To total or evaluate.
  2. (intransitive, followed by to) To be the same as or equivalent to.
  3. (obsolete, intransitive) To go up; to ascend.

The official name of the quantity n is "amount of substance".
Thus 1 mol is an amount of substance. 1 mol hydrogen is an amount of hydrogen.
1 kilogram is not an amount; it's a mass.
Hence his comment is misleading.
(Not for the first time.)
