Q: What would happen if I mix salt and sugar in a cup of water?

GobabisIf I mix water in a cup with sugar at some stage the solution will become saturated and no more sugar will dissolve into the water. If I now add salt to the solution will the salt dissolve into the water or is the solution already saturated? I have not tried an experiment as I cannot figure out ...

@Gowtham Then you have a solution of salt and sugar.
Hullo, BTW!

hi , yes intuitively i thought salt can dissolve in a saturated sugar solution, but i couldnt find much online to support this . Probably i will wave hands and say supersaturation occurs :D

I think I'll experiment, when I'm done with this ice cream.

@MARamezani A perfect waste of sugar and salt....

Yes. I think we got some extra at home.
Hullo to you too!

8:57 AM
@MARamezani Congratulations on your new responsibility !( ^_^)!

@Martin Tanks!

Haha...
your welcome... how's your day?

Hmm, let me guess...15:57 there?

yeas, about...

So, 16:27?

9:05 AM
narp... it says 606 on my computer clock... but that might be wrong...
nice meta post btw.

What meta post?

think long and hard and you will remember :P
The short answer response of course

Haha, the new answer?
I know, right?
I'm tending to write weirder and weirder answers.

meeehhh... i think they are alright

And the more I do, I love writing long answers with a conclusion even more.
Haha, I ran into this message from Philipp:
Sep 2 '14 at 20:11, by Philipp
@LordStryker Oral examination for organic chemistry labratory: Talking about aromatic compounds and writing down the structure of benzene. Then the student asks the golden question: Why is there a big oxygen atom inside the cyclohexane ring :'O

9:09 AM
I like short, well researched answers, the less time I spend on reading it, the better... still wanna take home the message...
@MARamezani Yes, this is a very common one...

@Martin That's why I always try to put a conclusion there.

i think giving a tl;dr section at start of a long answer works well

both will work
I always want to write short answers, but then I only pick the big questions.
Ron does a good job with short answers...

Yes. Also the format of short answer is: and then long answer is: works fine.
Hmm, $\ce{H2SO4}$?
Nope, doesn't work yet.

$\require{mhchem}$

9:15 AM
Huh?

$\ce{H2SO4}$
wurks

Let me see: $\ce{H2SO4}$
Oh, it does now! Yay!
@Martin Is that the German for works?

you need \require{mhchem} to activate it
@MARamezani nope... that's just fun...
Is hullo an official greeting in Iran?

I know...Ooooh, so let's try this:

lol

9:18 AM
$$\ce{LiOH + HCl \rightarrow LiCl + H2O}$$
@Martin It's the official greeting in the universe.
Dunno if that double displacement occurs.

Ahhh... I see

@Martin Wait! Is this a trick question? Argh! Fell for it...

you know you only need -> in mhchem for arrows

\ce{LiOH + HCl -> LiCl + H2O}

I know, but it ain't nerdy...
@Gowtham You forgot the dollars!
@Mar is chemfig available in chemistry?

9:23 AM
$\ce{LiOH + HCl -> LiCl + H2O}$
hm nice

@Gowtham A-ha!

\rightarrow produces too short arrows...

Well, I'm only 16, so!

@MARamezani you mean in mathjax?

I meant...yeah, back at chem.SE.

9:26 AM
@MARamezani Haha, that would be brilliant, but it is not implemented in MathJax...

NOOOO!

$$\mathcal{M}_{ath}\mathrm{J^{a}X}\neq\LaTeX$$

Yeah yeah, you always go on saying that in meta.Chem... :P

ADG
@Martin hello, hope ou understand that my past post of ignoring were just pointing at a possiblity not a personal hatred

If I was in ELL's chat, I would've faced a why you little...! response
@ADG Hullo!
Anything interesting I missed?

9:29 AM
@ADG Hi, sure, I was just clarifying that I am not ignoring people.

ADG
@MARamezani do'nt you have anything in the real world since you're lamost always here? aren't you wasting your precious time.
@Martin would you mind helping me with some quetsions?

@ADG I'm studying organochem at the same time ya know.
People in internet can do more things than one.

ADG
@MARamezani tip from me: Try to concentrate on one thing.
@MARamezani otherwise it may be very harmful, really.

@ADG Why when I can concentrate on more than one thing?

ADG
@MARamezani advices are not orders and you can do what you wish.

9:31 AM
Oh, duty calls guys! Later! Have to go....

ADG
@Martin since you are not replying, I am assuming you're offline and going bye.

you can just post the question and hope anybody replies :P just saying

@ADG Of course I would, I am currently trying to figure out how to do the ChatJax with mhchem enabled at startup
@MARamezani bye then...
What the frontdoor, there is an entire SE dedicated to VI... how awesome...

Q: MathJax in chat (ChatJax offshoot)

ManishEarthThis is an offshoot of ChatJax, which enables MathJax along with mhchem on chat. Copy the text below: javascript:(function(){if(window.MathJax===undefined){var%20script=document.createElement("script");script.type="text/javascript";script.src="https://d3eoax9i5htok0.cloudfront.net/mathjax/lat...

11:51 AM
@Martin I already saw it.
I'm BACK! (Oh no)

12:05 PM
@MARamezani Well you should put that post on the right side, so that everyone can use it, instead of the version, where no mhchem is enabled.

@Martin As you wish!

Awww noo that looks really dumb only the link, nobody will understand what it means...
let's try again...

So, hmm, maybe we should type the text here?

This one is better I guess
Werks!

Dunno. I think @ADG'll feel hurt if I don't pin his. :}

12:10 PM
$$\Huge\color{red}{\text{Science - It works!}}$$
leave it pinned ;)

Hello chemists!
I just saw that this question came up in the Hot Network Questions.
3
Q: Why is lead radioactive?

user15758Why is Lead (Pb) radioactive? Radioactivity refers to release of alpha beta gamma rays. What property of Lead makes it so?

How common is this? I had never seen Chem.SE questions out there.

Q: Chemistry Site Design

Kurtis BeaversI’m Kurtis, senior product designer at Stack Exchange. First, I wanted to congratulate you because this site is now starting the process of moving out of beta to become a fully-graduated site! Well done! Graduation and Your Site Design Graduation comes with a few perks. We have already started ...

Top recent news: Chemistry site design

@StackExchange WHOHHOOOOOOO!
I love this.
I think we'll be graduated some time soon!

6 hours later…
10:38 PM
@MARamezani hey, I've been wondering, do you have to have some sort of special permissions to post the "this is a homework question" comment? Or can I do this as well?

Hullo @Ringo!
There are no permissions.
Ya know, some months ago I just got very sick of homework dropping.

@MARamezani well then my only question would be how do you post a link in the comments like you can in the answers?

They weren't going to stop, so I wrote a template for myself.

I feel ya

Now, all I need to do is copy-pasting this:
This is a [homework](http://meta.chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/141/how-do-i-ask-‎h‌omework-questions-on-chemistry-stack-exchange) question. We have a policy which states that ‎you should show your thoughts and/or efforts into solving the problem. It'll make us certain that ‎we aren't doing your homework for you. Otherwise, this question may get closed.‎
It's that easy.
And then I realized I'm not the only person who uses templates.

10:41 PM
Hmm. I'll forge one of my own so I'm not stealing 1 minute of your life's work.
Thanks a bunch!

More precisely, 30 seconds.
@ringo Hmm hey, you already stole my last last profile pic!

Clearly I have underestimated your abilities

@ringo This. Is. Only. The. Beginning. MWAHHHHAAHHHHHHHHA!

Yeah! I picked it, and only then did I realize how similar it was to yours, but by then you had already changed it

@ringo BTW, you're from India too?

10:44 PM
No, I'm in the United States.

Thanks God!
Hmm, what's your age? (Mainly I wanna know this to know who I'm talking to)

I'm 18. I'm a senior in high school. Leaving for college next year to study biochemistry.
@MARamezani (this would probably explain the lack of sophistication in all my answers)

We get people with different colors. Guess Kurtis was right after all.
@ringo Dude, I have to go hide somewhere now!

For shame!

I'm 16!

10:48 PM
Huh
I'm scared to see what you'll be capable of when you're older

Me too.

@MARamezani Well--I'll see you amongst the stacks, friend

@ringo O thy what do thoust mean?

I thought you had to go?

Well, I would've, but I'm downloading Tex Live and it's 3:20 a.m. here.

10:52 PM
Haha! Now you're me last night! It's 5:50 p.m. where I am

Screw sleeping
2

Preach!
My ultimate goal is to transcend sleep. Oh how I look forward to that day.

Well, Martin had some sleeping problems too the other day.
So some evil guy is hunting down chemists' sleep.

What should we do to stop him?

Sleep. Just, not now.
BTW if you ever wanted to venture outta chem.SE to other SEs I recommend ELL, if you're not already a user in.

11:00 PM
I am a member, as a matter of fact, but I'm not very confident in my own grammar.
I feel as though I'll be attacked if I slip up.

If you're a native speaker, then you're a demi-god there.
@ringo But yeah, you'll be.

I'll just have to be very careful how I choose my questions.

@ringo I was talking about answers.

@MARamezani haha! So was I
I guess this is what I was talking about--slipping up and all
Say, what is your native language anyway?

A weird dialect of Turkish.
But I'm Iranian.

11:04 PM
And you learned English over the internet?

But yeah, mainly over the internet.
And some classes.
Damn that chat bug!

Impressive!

Dunno, but I'd say not really.

Hey! The senior design officer just floated in! Hey @KurtisBeavers!

Hullo @Kurtis!

11:07 PM
Hello
Just checking in

Things are running quite smoothly here
@MARamezani (or stickily you might say)

Not everyone has heard of the beginning of the apocalypse.
@KurtisBeavers Dunno, chemists are weird in chats.
I'm expecting you're expecting we're expecting some things about design, huh?
Sometimes chemists go all oooh! I want to haz taht shiney thingies!!!. But now, chat is quiet @Kurtis.

I jump around these chatrooms quite a bit. It's really interesting to see the different communities and how the culture varies from subject to subject.

I bet Martin hasn't see all of this yet.

Oh? and how is the chem culture relative to the others?

11:10 PM
@ringo Awful? (When I'm around)

Great. It's those mathematicians you have to worry about.
The designers are snobby.

This doesn't provide an answer to the question. To request clarification from the author....
Once you have enough rep, you can comment on any post. XD
@KurtisBeavers BTW I happen to oscillate around liking that green bg and not liking it.
Dunno, but I fear I might get tired of looking at it soon.

@MARamezani what would you suggest as an improvement to this?

@ringo I think that's subjective-ish, but I'd liked to see more blue in the main page.

@MARamezani you should mention it in the post and see what other think. We tried a couple different directions and there might be a better solution that we haven't thought of yet.

11:16 PM
@KurtisBeavers Hmm, well, after some time. I think I'm too sleepy to write anything accurate now.
But the green and the accepted-answer color seemed too identical.
Even with all of the creativity put into everything.
Oh, I like the blue color with the RGB code: #123456
Maybe the questions' color could be something like it?

There's some time to think about it. We like to give the community some time for everyone to chime in before we make the first round of revisions

Still, I'll be posting something in there about this. Tanks @Kurtis.

Oh, but we do have a few rules, the accepted answer has to be some variety of green. That's one of those things we try to keep consistent from site to site, so that people learn the same convetion.

@KurtisBeavers BTW Martin has got some taste on design. Maybe he's playing the new minesweeper game too much.

I look forward to getting all the feedback and launching the site!

11:20 PM
@KurtisBeavers Precisely. There are some things we (i.e. you) can't change.
@KurtisBeavers So, it'll get launched when you give a thumbs up to the SE devs?

Oh, i misread your comment above, you were referring to the question title. Yeah, that could be blue.
We'll do a round of revisions, and have to build out a couple assets. But then I'll publish the new CSS and assets on our production server.

It would be a peculiar mix - Just like a lab!
@KurtisBeavers Hmm, is it only you who works on the design?

We have a team of designers that's growing.
There are six of us now, but only 2.5 of us work on the community Q&A side of things.

Well tanks guys for everything!
I think I should either hibernate or caffeinate now.

Alright. Have a good night.

11:26 PM
Have a nice time listening to our nagging about the design!
