any suggestion for where one may ask for ideas for an Original Research Proposal (i.e. thesis topic) for a Ph.D.? I'm thinking maybe the Academia SE, but really it seems like an opinion-based thing so it may just be a thing for chat only.

I'm still in the throes of getting a main project worth working on for a few years.

I'm a computational chemist that works mainly with material / interface simulation. Usually with classical models/force-fields.

Advisors have some input but a fresh opinion would be appreciable.
p.s. my only graduate publication thus far may give an idea of what I'm familiar with or could branch from: pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.cgd.6b01058

okay. you can leave again ;)

Ah, haha, <nod>
At least I changed my handle so that you don't have to search through the endless Brians anymore. ;-)
you're WELCOME.

Q: Reasons for existence of eutectic point for alloy systems

GauravWhy does a eutectic point exist for a system of alloy ? Why is it that there is such a definite ratio of composition at which this occurs ?

@Feeds Welcome to the mini-team of ROs @Brian @hBy2Py

somehow, the removal of [homework] just made the "do-my-homework"-questions less easy to find and punish :(

Most of the blatantly obvious don't use the tag in the first place, so someone has to find them first

Q: Meta-meta: What to do to reduce content being so much dispersed out there?

M.A.R.The guidance for newer users is awesome, and probably even sometimes redundant. However, as soon as you get past some arbitrary rep threshold, especially on smaller sites, there's this huge learning curve when you want to learn more about the system, in other words look around a bit. A good port...

8:40 AM
@hBy2Py there's a good chance the question up there will not be received well, and I can't think of examples of the top of my head. So you should respond to Oded's comment up there if you want to save it, in a way

@M.A.R. it seems to be coming along alright
@Fl.pf. the tagging system is not meant to be used to indicate the quality of questions, there is a closure policy in place for that and we already use it liberally

@orthocresol A lack of surge of either of downvotes or upvotes indicated people are being apathetic about it . . .
Which is kinda worse than closure
@Fl.pf. You used [homework] to find homework questions? o.o

@M.A.R. no. I don't actively look for homework questions. Why would I want to hurt myself?

@orthocresol I know that. But [homework] was statistically speaking a quality indicator

8:55 AM
Well, close votes are quality indicators now
And the crappiest homework questions weren't tagged homework anyway

@Jan \pu{0.01mol\,dm^{-3}} should be written with a space instead of \,. (I'd recommend \pu{0.01 mol dm-3})

11:08 AM
@M.A.R. AFAIK both are valid usage; just a style difference.

11:23 AM
@M.A.R. Positive reception thus far, seems.
See my extensive comment rant under Patrict's question, especially

Not much reading actually

[faq] you!
did you know [faq] is a hot link to the tour?

@Martin-マーチン tour you
@Martin-マーチン yeah, of course
Now I'm wondering if there's anything I don't know about this site ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

i guess that information is also dispersed somewhere
It was funny when they changed [about] to read tour... lots of my welcome comments turned rogue
"You can read more [about] our site..." something like that... maybe you find one... I'll give you a prize ;)

12:06 PM
@Martin-マーチン challenge accepted
If I succeed, can I ask you a question about energy decomp analysis? I get the feeling you've mentioned it before in some of your answers, so I thought you'd be a good person to ask.

well, you can ask this question anyway ;)

Can one or the other of you screencap this question that M.A.R. got Reversal for?

@hBy2Py No, because we don't have 10k rep on MSE

Oh, snap, of course it's site-specific
<mourns>
Too bad I can't ask @M.A.R. directly, sigh

he should be able to see his own deleted stuff

@Martin I think so too :) Welcome to Chemistry.SE!Klaus Warzecha Mar 24 '14 at 14:15

anyway... @orthocresol ... I'd count that as a half... I looked myself, there are no more comments out there, but I did not delete them just yet

Yeah, I noticed most of them have been cleaned up, those that hadn't been were on deleted posts

I think santiago found them all while he was hunting for the Marshall badge

Now, I can't find anybody who welcomed Klaus.

That was before courtesy ;)

this is funny too.. in many ways

when i switch to a parent site that is not my modding power, shouldn't I loose my priveledges?
it does O.o

in chat? or on-site?

in chat...
well, I guess not for chemistry, but for the other chats

o.o

It's complicated
I think all of chat is threaded together for some things
e.g., when someone raises a regular flag on a chat post, I'm pretty sure it's broadcast to every chat everwhere

1:55 PM
Yes, if you have >10k rep combined on all sites.

<nod>

For a single-site user like me, things are significantly simpler.

there are feature requests to change that though
i mean those flags...
most of the ones i see are from the Russian SO chat, so I can't read them anyway

damnit i helped him get it :D

@mhchem Well you know, I tried that first, found out it worked and was happy. I didn’t want to put anything aside from εffort into that edit so no going back and re-checking ;) But I’ll keep it in mind for further edits.
@BountyHunter It hurts to see all those extraneous curvy brackets in the mhchem syntax .__. And the missing MathJax at $\pu{59.7 kcal} = \pu{249.7848 kJ}$ .___.

@Jan the question hurtz more

@Martin-マーチン tempted to close as unclear, because of the stability line

@orthocresol I would rather close it as reference request …

@Martin-マーチン Huh, I suppose I am, at at that.

I'll help him out with the citation, I guess.

@Jan The revision history tells me that you replaced 0.01mol dm^{^-3} with \pu{0.01mol\,dm^{-3}}, so you replaced the space with \,. And my point is that you don't need to.
Just a very small note.

Oh crap, I never realized I earned a reversal for that headache.
@hBy2Py Reversals in meta.SE are handed out like chocolate
All you need to do is wait for a drama about private messaging or comments requiring downvotes, and having been around enough to quickly write a good response with a few links as a slap to the OP's face and if you get lucky, you get a reversal.
I can provide you with screenshots, since that post was deleted but it was my post
Does that do it for you @hBy2Py @Mart @Ortho?

I would prefer if we held back on killing homework for the time being.
Sorry
I want to think a bit about what Jan wrote on my post.
I don't think we need to figure out an entirely new HW policy, however I think we need to figure out what cleaning up entails.
That said, you can sign me up for . It's holidays now and I am free the whole day (UTC+1), obviously I cannot dedicate the whole day as I need to study, but I will be able to put aside time for this at any point in the day.

@orthocresol Sure, I'm looking for an excuse to ignite a TRE II
And I don't think homework will ever die if we leave it alone

It has been long overdue, hasn't it?

I have experience with leaving bad tags alone
They keep spreading like the plague, so should be dealt with like a plague

I agree. I am thinking of something simple along the lines of, if it has a good answer -> improve the question (and reopen if necessary); if it does not, delete.

@orthocresol Oh well

However, I am also contemplating whether it is ethical to leave "higher-level questions" on the site.
For example, I have a harder time closing this:

I thought you were referencing some newer developments. They have been discussing it on and off, a little bit, but with not much progress AFAIK

@orthocresol IKR, that has been bothering me for a while

@orthocresol @M.A.R. I'm in for , but I can only put forth sustained, undistracted effort from at most 1:30am to 4am UTC (sorry, @ortho).
I can participate irregularly during the week from 1pm to 8pm UTC, though.

No, I was mentioning something old...only other SE I read is Stack Overflow

I could probably also clear a 1-1.5 hour stretch on a weekend day, say between 5pm and 9pm UTC
@orthocresol They also have , IIRC, instead of
Not that that particularly helps much.

@hBy2Py It is ok. Different timezones can be a hindrance, but can also be a help (it works out very nicely for the mod team, as we have people round the clock).

What about the following for a new HW policy
1) Only blatant dumps are to be closed for HW VTC
2) Everything else just gets treated with normal quality standards
except
3) Answers should not work out the specific problem posted in the question
with the goal being to provide illustrative, here's-how-you-do-it answers, but that don't provide the specific answer OP is looking for
They can work out a different problem, if that's useful
(3) puts a heavier burden on the community, to figure out an alternative example
but for most of these questions, examples shouldn't be too hard to think of, because they can be highly simplified
(NOTE: I'm not sure how much I like this idea, I've just been noodling with it)

8:18 PM
@M.A.R. Perhaps the best thing about the first question I linked, is that the asker did not list the most important reagent (hydroxylamine hydrochloride).

But if I see something "happening" and I'm awake I might try and help.

9:13 PM
@orthocresol We should do a Google Sheet for scheduling -- half-hour UTC increments across the columns, and each potential participant can add a row for their availability -- shade the cells where they're available.
Whichever slot(s) has/have the best coverage we can choose those.

go for it
I expect to be swamped by work in a few months' time. (Probably roughly when we might have another election.) So, exploit my relative freedom while you still can.

@orthocresol Hm, what permissions to put on it, though
Do Google Sheets have full-featured edit histories?
If not, if I make it completely open, someone could irrecoverably vandalize it.

I think there are edit histories.

I'll look later tonight
Need to wrap up here shortly

Q: What's the rationale for not parsing HTML entities in chat?

M.A.R.It seems status-bydesign that HTML entities are not parsed in chat. What's the rationale for this? In my humble opinion, HTML entities can be very useful. I would be able to freely type "—" with — and "–" with – instead of looking up their Unicode, instead of the really short and ann...

@orthocresol To add a personal note, regarding the current topic of "daylight saving"
Try to use a time server in a differnt location.
Like work in Europe, but have a lab management server in the US.
Each time there is about one week, where the two daylight savings differ for one hour in addition.
So, once Georgia is seven, or only five hours away -- in time.

9:32 PM
@Buttonwood That is awesomely terrible.

I beg to differ. That is terribly terrible.

@orthocresol Good idea.
@orthocresol This can't end well.

If you have to book time in advance, like for NMR, well ...
Basically our open access NMR service shuts down for these two weeks.

I pay attention to two timezones, since many people I know are in GMT+8. However, Asia does not observe DST, so only one timezone is changing.

Or China -- wide enough to cover more than one zone; but maintaing only Beijing time (not daylight saving related, though).

9:34 PM
Found out recently that India is similar -- wide enough for three time zones, but only has one.
@pentavalentcarbon EST is UTC-5, EDT is UTC-4
When in doubt, just Google "UTC time"

On the other hand, it seems that Russia has roughly as many time zones as manganese has oxidation states.
Newfound respect for Putin, I guess

Or add a second watch running in your OS, like orage in xubuntu.

Speaking of which

Noun: time zone (plural time zones)
 1. A range of longitudes where a common standard time is used.

9:37 PM
Wasn't North Korea 15 min shifted?

@Buttonwood Some countries are shifted, yeah. Dunno about North Korea, but Iran is 30 minutes shifted, and Bangladesh 45 minutes
I don't remember any country with a 15-minute shift
I thought the least was 30 minutes

No, North Korea shifted themselves by 30 minutes for propaganda purposes:
I remember seeing that news, it was hilarious :D
Hmm... 30 not 15.

Yes, on a map it looked "funny" at best, North and South Korea, same peninsula, but in different times.
(no put intended)
Yah en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_zone mentions 30 min difference. My error.

@orthocresol Oh well, half the politicians are crazy, half of them are stupid, and half of them are just childish

@ M.A.R. How did you come up with the Russian video? A special interest?

9:48 PM
@M.A.R. So, not too different from politicians in more developed parts of the world.

Give me five quarters.

@Buttonwood Seen it before
There's also Trump, which physics hasn't been able to explain
Scientists dazzled

By today's signature, Mr Trump thinks local coal industry will have a rebirth.

@M.A.R. That's 'cause they're fake scientists.

I speculate China will take it as invite to advance in "renewable energies".
Yah, to replicate findings in science is not this much honored.
And the attention to reproducible science is still low.

9:53 PM
There, May.

The lamp listens to this, and is shattering ...
It will become more difficult for the Britons.
(Not sure if they stay together in two or three years.)

not sure too

If Northern Ireland does not wish to leave EU, nor Free Scotland ...
Sounds like there could be a potential echo in tune of "... make UK Great Again".

Yes, some of the rhetoric is disturbingly similar.

Bruxelles' price tag for the Britons to leave EU is EUR 60 milliards (British counting).
Not really "we will save much more than the NHS costs us" as one of the proponents of the Brexit stated.
And then, old troubles will surface again ... like fishing.
The Britons will look to fish within their 12 miles,
at the English Channel, they likely have the French with their 12 mile zone approaching or even intersecting...
And then, like a cascade reaction, what about the Dutch, used to fish there, too?
O là là ...
It is easier to disagree on something, than to agree on something new replacing the old existing.
Perhaps contributing to the observation Mr Trump's replacement of Obama care did not work in the way he anticipated. Despite, they had more than five years time to prepare the bill.
And now (on paper) have the majority in President, gouvernment, both Houses.

10:07 PM
That one actually surprised me

The lack of track "how Mr Trump acts / reacts in political business" offers an other question, too:
How will he present himself / how will he react if he recognizes the limits in his politcal power?
Will he recognize this?

To be honest, I am sure he has recognised it. I think he is a very smart person.
But, I don't know whether there will come a point where his party starts actively not backing him.
So far he has survived, usually by simply deflecting everything.

What did you observe at him, leading you to the perception he won't throw a tantrum with lasting damage?

He might, I just don't know when.

I'm not sure if this were simply "unpredictable", "challenging" or something else, in regard to work together with and for all of the people, and on an international level.

10:30 PM

I can add you.

thank you.

11:16 PM
Now, I have this brilliant homework policy idea.
Just need to post it on meta... to see if others agree or disagree as to whether it is indeed brilliant... haha

speaking of homework policy posts @orthocresol =) I just made one

seems like a good start...
It is not possible for one person to overturn the hw policy from scratch. It is also exceedingly difficult for the community to overturn it from scratch. I think small steps like these are the way to go.
The name is also something we have been arguing over for a while; many of us don't like it.

yeah. I can say that over on PSE, it's been argued over for a while.
i'd distance it as much from homework as possible - it's about asking the community to solve arbitrary problems with no effort shown.

11:56 PM
@M.A.R., you're about to become a meme of meta.chem.
Once I post my homework policy on meta.
