I was wondering if someone could help me understand why we would protect a question like this one:

Q: My colleagues frown on me for using my vacation days. Should I stop using them so much?

ElfyI work for a company that gives 25 vacation days a year. Unused days are not paid and if not used they become wasted and you cannot use them the next year. When you leave the company, you are not paid the unused vacation days. I used roughly 15 of the 25 I have but a few people (both above, belo...

I've not had a chance to look at all of the answers yet, but they appear to all have substance. Generally, I would think to protect a post when it gets a lot of spam or answers that need continual attention to improve and meet standards.
Several people asked for it to be protected, and someone took care of it, but the reason I ask is because I'm wondering if the 10 rep requirement doesn't simply drive people to the comments instead. I've removed a lot of extended discussions from posts recently and am wondering if you think it's better that we (1) protect posts and delete comments, or (2) leave questions unprotected and moderate answers instead?

@jmort253 this is more about protecting the community, about making sure things won't go wrong, rather than protecting the question after (enough) harm has already been done. Given that question is near the top of hot list, has about 3K views and 14 answers, protection looks reasonable. This is discussed in more details at Prog meta...

Q: Answers quality in hot questions

gnatFor few recent months, I've got a habit of downvoting answers which quality doesn't look OK to me. These probably can be generally described as low effort and/or these lacking relevance to question asked. Opinionated slogans, claims that are not backed up by appropriate references or by ...

@jmort253 There are a lot of answers there which don't contribute anything new
@jmort253 the only reason I even answered that question was because at that point, literally no answer addressed the root question "is this normal in the USA" and currently, only my answer and @HLGEM's answer still do
@jmort253 this sort of thing bothers me. I don't like it when answers get upvoted which don't even address the key issue the question is asking ("is this normal in the USA?") and that is exactly what happened (and is happening) on that post

A: My colleagues frown on me for using my vacation days. Should I stop using them so much?

foampileYou should take all your vacation time and not let a single minute go to waste. You are entitled to it by the stipulation of your work contract. Just like you can't change your rate of pay on a whim every paycheck, neither can your company expect you not to take your mutually agreed upon vacati...

how does this answer address the question's problem and motivation?

(I'm not even talking about the current revision, I'm talking about the original question - what was there when it was posted)
the top voted answer completely ignored this too until it was edited after Rachel updated the Q yesterday

@enderland I think the core of the original question was "What should I do?", which is what many users chose to answer. The edit I did focused the question on the narrower topic of if you should let your coworkers influence how you take your PTO :)

Q: How should I respond to an inappropriate question in a job interview?

GreenMattIn the United States, it is considered discriminatory to consider certain things about a candidate when hiring, unless that thing is actually relevant to that job. Specific to this question, a person's marital/parental status is one of these things. Nonetheless, I heard something like the follo...

I think probably the best answer is to declare that you are single, then, when you don't get the job, file a discrimination lawsuit

@Rachel I agree but the question is not constructive either.

oh boy. that question is going to be a top question

@enderland Actually lie say you are married. They can not terminate you for not being married with out violating the law.

I think I answered this question. The only way, with certainty, to NOT exclude oneself from consideration is to ANSWER the question and to answer it as MARRIED. I think it's the wrong question to ask, which I tried to convey in my answer. It is an illegal question and exposes a bias that has a weak correlation at best. — David Espina 13 mins ago
wtf. Q/A sites don't work like that

@Enderland - My wife died in what the coroner fortunately ruled as an accident a few months ago but I am on the hunt for a new one.

people should upvote this so it stays visible as this question gets popular. Also, interesting that the link text changed (!)

@enderland They don't. Old-school usability ones often do though

Q: How can I find out if floating holidays are payable when someone is laid off?

S LI'm wondering if floating holidays can be or are paid out to the employee when the company lays them off. I had a previous job where I had unused floating holidays. The company laid me off before I was able to use them. I didn't think to ask about being compensated for the unused floaters but ...

I still don't see how this is better than "Are floating holidays payable when someone is laid off?", as it's such a basic question that it should be obvious to anyone that you should ask your HR department
And now the most recent edit basically added "Is there anything I can do now?", but I thought you wanted to discourage the "what should I do now" kind of questions....
This is the problem when you try to outlaw all kinds of phrases or expressions from questions without evaluating the actual question itself. You need to actually read the question to determine it's worth, not judge it based on a single phrase alone
I almost feel like the "Programmers.SE" mentality is creeping into this site, and kind of want to just quit it as well
Everyone just wants to close things, or find ways to fit all the questions into a nice little set of rules
Subjective sites don't work that way
Bah I'm ranting now
Boo I can't delete all my rant, its been to long since I posted part of it
Just ignore me :)

9:44 PM
I agree, "How do I find out if floating holidays are payable?" is basic and not interesting. But "Are they payable?" is not answerable by anyone, as we all know that every company is different. You can't really give an authoritative answer that says "maybe they are, maybe they aren't" that is better than "just ask."

Then vote to close it - I won't be offended. But my question seems no more subjective than the others I have read on this site. — Nathanael 38 secs ago
broken window in action
I still hate the question @Rachel. Just trying to put lipstick on the pig

@Chad Ugh. His response is worse in terms of b0rken wind0z
Man, nothing worse than asking a Q on stackexchange after searching only to find it's a duplicate...

@enderland at least they're improving search. Kinda. The accuracy anyway, not the display of it...

LaTeX is still a mystery to me. Probably always will be... it's kinda like git. Except you can find documentation for LaTeX

Q: How should I respond to the classic "Introduce yourself" question in an interview?

SongoAlmost any interview begins with the classic question of "Introduce yourself". Somehow I found mixed levels of detail as answers to this question. How should you ideally respond to this question professionally? Should I talk about college? family? private work? other activities? I'm currently ...

If they ask "Who are you" they're a Vorlon and if they ask "What do you want" they're a Shadow
@enderland er, you should be able to protect questions now, actually

@BenBrocka I think a Q has to be around for 24hours before that ability kicks in - "The question must be at least a day old"
Moderators can hit any question with protect (the one there is still only 6 hours old (!))

Q: Applying for an American internship as a foreign student living in Germany

Christian IvicevicI am a Bosnian student living (and being born) in German, yet I didn't want to get the German citizenship. Currently I am studying computer science and mathematics nearing my Bachelor's degree. In my opinion, every student who is in contact with IT should at least participate in one or more inter...

I'm not sure what should be done with this Q - I think this is a good question at its core but its not really structured good?
