Man, you'd think that people who spend all day watching comedy shows on YouTube with audible audio coming from his headphones (in an open plan office no less) would at least have the decency not to break out into fits of coughing laughter...

@Lilienthal well if they can't even take care of getting the sound of their headpohones rights to not being heard, why would they ?

12:22 PM
@Lilienthal I feel your pain, I am the ONE developer in the same room with desktop support and next to a meeting room where they always have the phone on speaker with maximum volume.

It's an open plan office with horrendous acoustics and constant noise but at least I can sort of tune out business sounds. But this is getting ridiculous. I guess there's no limit to what a guy will do when he got elected union representative and deciced he no longer cares about his job since he can't be fired...

@Lilienthal my best open space : 3 meters height, history building (can't make accoustic arrangement) 12 people including 3 chief project and the lack of meeting room for call meeting.
I didn't had problem with, but one of my teammates just get himself in meetings room as soon it was possible because he had too strong headaches.

Q: When to vote to close

Mister PositiveAs I get more familiar with how this community works I have come up with two items: You could vote every question to be closed as a duplicate ( not all but 80% or so ). This is due to the fact that you only have so many work place situational questions. In light of 1 above, I have been much mo...

2:25 PM
@Lilienthal He will soon damage his eardrums or may have done so already.

3:12 PM
@Lilienthal I have headphones and listen to old time radio all day. Then again, I have an office door and don't like to go deaf....I have to use them to block out sounds (misophonic that I am) but I wouldn't considering bugging my co-workers with it, simply because I know how annoying it IS.
@MaskedMan Maybe an explanation would be warranted without being asked so that people can see what makes a bad question (in your eyes), and correct to more fully follow what your opinion is. Like when putting a vote to close and having to choose a reason. "I'm downvoting this because..." seems fair enough. Oh, and being ready to take criticism of your downvote, as well. As you and I know all too well from a recent discussion here.

3:36 PM
I'm kind of sad that no one else voted to close this as a 100% dup of the canonical one we have: workplace.stackexchange.com/q/87755/2322

@enderland I'm trying to avoid going on a unilateral closing spree with my newfound powers. :)
Being unable to normal flag is pretty annoying, especially for dupes.
Not sure it's really a dupe of that one though, this seems more the "I got my degree, do I get a raise?"
I'd have closed this company specific.

@Lilienthal it's the same question though

I don't get the thinking of some people
Um, do you think it's wise to post on a public forum how awful you think your employer (specifically disparaging 2 executives) from an account where you not only have your full name and picture, but you link to your resume? — Christopher Estep 1 min ago

@SliderBlackrose Uh no, there is nothing wrong with downvoting without an explanation. Nobody is entitled to anything like that. While it is nice to improve other people's questions to help them get answers, it is not a right and nobody is under any obligation to do that.
Criticism of downvote as in "I don't agree with your reason for the downvote" is fine, but not "I upvoted, you downvoted, what's wrong with you?" or I can't believe you downvoted this, you must be crazy."

I very rarely explain my downvote. And frankly, almost all the "why are you downvoting me?" is ego driven. It's 2 rep points. Big deal. everyone gets downvotes from time to time.
Yes, sometimes I'll ask why but when I do I'm genuinely curious because I think my answer is obvious.

I only ever do when I explain specifically how to edit to fix it

4:11 PM
I explain my downvotes when I "feel" it would lead to improvement of the post. I get that feeling far less often than I wish. Most often, it only leads to mudslinging, because the OP doesn't want to receive feedback.

and the link to his domain which is his full name and contains his resume. — Christopher Estep 15 mins ago
lol. did not realize that

Uh, I misread my own comment there, the last word. :P
Given that on the internet, no one knows if you are a dog, I take all sorts of reviews with truckloads of salt. — Masked Man 2 hours ago
which is probably more accurate than the actual comment!

@enderland I always check profiles of people bashing their employers if there's a gif or what looks like a real name. So many people don't realize that doing a google of the image usually reveals enough.

@ChristopherEstep yeah, that's fair, probably interesting that way

I'd hate to see someone get canned because they were a little careless with profiles. That's why you'll never see me say anything bad about AT&T on here. :D
Well, that and the fact that I really enjoy the company. It's my 2nd year+ gig with them.

4:23 PM
I love my current employer so it'd be hard for me to say much bad about them

5:14 PM
I have a few stories about former employers, but I don't bother spreading them, it does no good and just makes you look bitter. Boy do I have some doozies though. Let's just say there's a reason I'm quick to point out that HR is not your friend

There's lots I could say say too but there's only one person and company that I would ever publicly name and shame and that's because he was the most extreme bully I've ever seen in the workplace.
He was so bad that I ended up with some mild ptsd out of it. I didn't realize until about 4 months ago that I actually have a couple of triggers from having worked for him.
It's weird to have your boss innocently respond to an email with "See me." and I start having a panic attack. Had no idea until it happened.
(that's what the SOB would say every time I sent him an email with a question before he would berate me in extremis)

I would try The Workplace Chat for this. It's a much better question for chat than a Q/A site. — enderland ♦ 11 mins ago

It must be Fantasy Question Friday.

Q: What are effective ways for remote teams to communicate during an emergency?

DavidannImagine your development team is spread out over multiple cities: Seattle, WA and Portland, OR. The Portland team has more experience dealing with hot production issues and the Seattle team members are new to the team, and therefore are not as experienced dealing with hot production issues. In t...

@ChristopherEstep I'm trying to decide if that's on topic or not

Seems so to me.

It sounds like a fantastic question to me. Especially from my context of working mostly as an "offshore" team member and constantly having to deal with complaints of "we can't trust you offshore guys with anything, things would have moved much faster if we did it right here", conveniently ignoring that things would moved faster here too if we didn't have to wait for instructions from "there" for every little thing.
I have tried dealing with that problem with various case-by-case patchy solutions. Let me just say that if I find a great answer to that question, I will offer a huge bounty, maybe two. Now that I think about it, I wonder why I didn't ask that question myself. :/

I like answering good questions a lot more than mediocre ones...

This question being closed is why I hate "primarily opinion based" as a reason. Under that logic we can declare 90% or more of the question as off topic.

Q: Do recruitment agencies, or headhunters, offer anything of value to job seekers?

GrasperI had a conversation with my friend regarding a job search. I was shocked when he told me I should never communicate with a recruitment agency. He said many times they don't have any agreement with the company they are trying to hire someone for. When they have a candidate after then they approa...

@enderland and the room - Question on applying. I used the generic "send us an email" for a theater, with an application that is designed for the general ticket taker type position and a resume. I got back a boilerplate response from the receptionist "If you fit a position we will contact you"
Should I also submit a resume for hte specific position through linked in where I found the job originally?

11:38 PM
@ChristopherEstep I made an edit that brings it from imo borderline to more ontopic
