@Lilienthal yeah, I definitely know they're still used in academia, but I have never heard of them being used anywhere else in the US.

@DavidK I have had a couple places ask for references in the US but not reference letters; I can confirm that some workplaces actually do call the people you list as references to do reference checks. How important a reference is probably depends on the industry.
