@DavidK They're a distinct concept in Academia. The legal professions might still use them occasionally but even that I'm doubtful about.
Beyond that, reference letters in most offices in the US aren't worth more than the paper they're printed on.

@RichardU I'd suggest rephrasing your last sentence here. I think you're main point is that he message can be a reasonable answer in many cases and you're secondary point is that in some of those cases a terse answer can stand on its own. But the way it came across to me on first read it felt like you're recommending being that terse in all those cases.
