You might have noticed that yesterday we updated the "real questions have answers" close reason based on the discussion on meta. Could we now get some more attention on the "advice on what to do" close reason? Please weigh in here:

Q: Can we improve the text of the “Advice on what to do” close reason?

David K“Advice on what to do” close reason is over-broad Questions asking for advice on what to do are not practical answerable questions (e.g. "what job should I take?", or "what skills should I learn?"). Questions should get answers explaining why and how to make a decision, not advice on wh...

All our questions are, in a sense, seeking advice on a problem the OP has and wants to do something about. We can be more clear about what the problem is. If you like the current answer, please upvote. If you don't like it, can you propose something else?

I've looked at it, but I need more coffee before I can contribute

@ChristopherEstep The same manager who complained, later approached my manager to ask him why communication on his team was so good. xxFACEPALMxx

I don't get why so much bad management just stays like mold. I wish more companies would do anonymous management reviews (by subordinates). Most subordinates will be generally honest if their boss is doing a good job.

@ChristopherEstep The complainer was later promoted over my manager.... xxfacepalmxx

Whoa, I started posting a comment on an answer, which became too long so I started making it an answer. That ended up being an essay, and I got 25 points within 2 minutes of posting it!

A: Got increment in salary but being paid out of payslip

Masked ManI will post an answer from the Indian context, which should be of interest to the asker, who is from India. Of course, a huge chunk of the answer could be relevant to other countries as well. Indian employees typically receive two kinds of payments from their employer: Salary/wages: This typic...

@MaskedMan what can we say, you da man!

@RichardU More like the OP upvoted and accepted the answer. That's kinda meh! But well, an accepted answer is more satisfying than a highly upvoted answer for some reason. :)

That's a change I would like, you can't accept an answer for 12 hours from the initial question. Even 6. Heck, 3. :)
places like SO don't need that because something is either a good answer (works) or it isn't. Here, it needs to marinate a bit.

I think that time limit is currently 15 minutes. It is way too short for "subjective" sites like this one.
But hey, there's some of "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" at work here. You are not prevented from posting new answers when an answer is accepted. So yeah, if you have an answer which is significantly better or different than the current ones, a measly 15 points should not stop you from posting it.

@MaskedMan I know what you mean, especially when your answer has the most votes, is over 100, and..... no best answer.... somehow that's less than satisfying

I think it is mostly because there is some sort of a "personal touch" to an accepted answer. When the answer is accepted, you know that it helped the person who had the issue, and even if he doesn't use his real name, you kind of know there's a real person there. Voting is anonymous, so you cannot really find that personal touch, besides the voter is unlikely to have found the answer useful for his own situation.

@MaskedMan That makes sense. I pulled myself out of a deep hole by first deciding I would make 5 people smile every day, because that was literally the only help I could give anyone at the time. Then, as I improved, I kept up the habbit, these days I'm more effective as I am no longer homeless and have extra money and resources.

Lord get me through one more day without me telling an idiot that he's an idiot.

I must be in a bad mood today, because the majority of the new questions sound like whines to me. "What should I do?" "I'm being set up to fail" "I'm not getting help" "How do I deal with..." The answer to most of the whines is probably "Do your best". And perhaps adding "and stop whining so much". Must be the heat...
