@enderland I've been in that situation as well. Either that or there have been reasonable answers already. Stupid time zone! :)

@enderland You could write your own great question. ;-)

Q: Ambiguous performance review af a young software engineer

BrainlessMy post follows this one: How to make young software engineers improve the quality of their output? Without getting into the details of the previous post, we have a software project which was rushed, and we found a lot of bugs at the end of the project only. It was conducted by a small group of ...

Holy wall of text Batman!

@MaskedMan I try to post a question whenever I think of something which would be good ;)

Props to Joe for putting some much time into this community but I really hope he would stop answering off-topic questions. :\

There was a while moderators were coordinating a Broken Windows review
Trying to cleanup off topic and low voted questions (if everything is 0 or worse the system auto deletes questions, but a question at -5 and a +1 answer will not get auto deleted

Does that mean I should be downvoting answers to off-topic questions? (Think that's been brought up on global meta before)

Q: Should one downvote answers to off-topic questions?

Ernest Friedman-HillIt annoys me when people post answers to obviously off-topic questions like this one, especially after those questions have already received several close votes. Migrations seem to happen rather infrequently these days, so there's probably no reputation to gain for questions that are likely to be...

That's... an interesting question there, I probably should do more of that?
Part of the problem here is that we can still help people even if their questions are off topic
[1/2] I really do value your advice, thank you. You almost feel like my dad right now, ha! Yes, I think you can feel that I am defensive about my points. Unfortunately I might shoot myself in the foot with the wrong decision. When I quit my job in the summer and my boss asked me why, I told him that I am young enough to take risks (he just got married and a kid was on its way and he is still fairly young) and that it is now that I don't have responsibilities (I told him that I would value it if we could have more in-house projects that the employees are more passionate about). — the_critic 1 hour ago

1:43 PM
Yeah but that's what I feel comments are for.
You can give succinct advice in the comments while still flagging the question if the question itself isn't salvageable.

I wish chat was more popular for those sorts of questinos, too

And, yeah, exactly.
Those users would probably be better served asking in chat.

Hey he has that much rep, he actually can

I gotta remember to set up some templates for myself since I end up clicking through the Ask Question > Help > On-topic at least once a day.

It's hard when users don't have 20 rep of whatever the requirement is, so they can't acutally chat

1:45 PM
Yeah indeed
Though to be fair, 80% or more of the (problematic) questions seem to come from 100-rep users.

I would try The Workplace Chat for this sort of question, it's a lot better medium for getting advice if you don't have a clear question. — enderland ♦ 1 min ago

Didn't using @the_critic also work?
Hmm, not sure if it does but then the @ doesn't seem to show a visible effect when used normally.

@Lilienthal you can only ping users who have recently been in chat

Yeah I figured as much.

As a moderator technically I can ping them, but that's not really the intent of that feature

1:49 PM
Yeah, agreed.
What does that actually look like? A standard notification?

I think it does an immediate ping, I'm not sure actually as I don't think I've ever been pinged that way... :)

A: What is a 'superping'?

Martijn PietersSuperpings are a chatroom feature only available to diamond moderators, where they can reach a user irrespective of past interaction. Compare that to a normal ping, where you can @name someone in comments or in a chatroom only if they have been active on a post or in that chatroom. Superpings h...

Huh, interesting.
So presumably one of the intended uses might actually be to invite a new user to chat even though he doesn't have sufficient rep?

Yeah

Unless that "create a chat account" thing is a relic of the past.
Wait no, this is from June of this year. :)

@Lilienthal cool, thats what I like

It is at this point that enderland goes mad with power and starts pinging everything left, right and centre.

Q: Is giving a management book to your boss inappropriate?

EricFromSouthParkI've read Rework (by David Heinemeier Hansson and Jason Fried) and found that it has some really good points about ASAP, meetings, etc. I've found that this book addresses many mistakes that are regularly practiced at my daily job. My boss is hosting an annual BBQ party soon. Is it wrong if I gi...

@Lilienthal why would I do this?

I think this would be better asked "What is the appropriate way to give your boss a book on management?" I know its an old question but it begs for me too answers and just picked one up

2:20 PM
@Chad it does :)
> What is the best way to give the book to my boss (e.g., at the party, in the workplace)? Is there any way to do it such that it is not inappropriate?

then i am just going to change the title

@Chad There's no problem with suggesting an edit to an old question.

Titles are the thing I alway forget about when doing a massive edit, too

I know I just wanted to make sure I wasnt going to make more problems for a basically non issue over one question
Title is the only thing half of our users read I think

nah just hot list readers :)

2:22 PM
which are half of our users most days

hey I like repcapping because of hot questions list :D

hehe me too

holy cow

Even over 100 on weekend, too, that's pretty impressive

2:25 PM
yeah

Yesterday I got two gold answer badges, too, which was weird
I was wondering if I had perhaps edited that on p.se, guess someone else did

I don't really understand your question, it sounds like your manager was a senior developer, who changed positions but no one replaced him. Now you are responsible for all of his previous tasks and are not sure how to do those tasks and are looking to talk with your previous bosses boss (the director)? — enderland ♦ 8 mins ago
I don't understand that still after his followup

Yeah there's a serious language barrier in place here.

3:48 PM
@Lilienthal He wasn't "berating" David K. His English was the problem.
He meant something like: What do you have in head? --> Why do you think so?
@enderland I think your interpretation is correct. I didn't find it confusing though. Perhaps being a non-native English speaker helps me understand other people's non-native English better. :D
"I call my boss to the senior developer who gone, and Director to the Director of the department which is still here." What he meant was: The one I called "my boss" is the senior developer, and the one I called Director is the Director of the department. He used "to" more like this is a "label". :)

@MaskedMan I normally do ok understanding non-native English (everyone I work with is a non-native speaker lol) but that one was a mystery

I think one of my favorite "perks" of working from home is cooking a real lunch...

6:31 PM
@MaskedMan I actually wrote something here earlier but apparently forgot to send: "I can't tell if this guy is incredibly boorish and rude or just translating in all the wrong ways."
For what it's worth, I'm not a native speaker either but the language he was using didn't strike me as particularly polite or respectful even in whatever the original language was.

6:42 PM
@Chad I will be amused if that question ends up closed as a duplicate of the Bus question since I have the top answer on it
I don't think they are duplicates, though

7:08 PM
@enderland I do but ohh well.

@Chad nah, I don't really care about the business trainwreck much in my question, but he cares about the other folks :P

we have a dozen other my employer sucks should i care that i am leaving questions
Any one of them could be a dup of this
if you care about that then do your best to protect your company from getting hit by a bus

Hmmm, perhaps
Or just make sure the bus hits the whole company at the same time, right? ;)

lol

That'd be an interesting question, "how do I ensure my company goes under when I leave?"
lol

I would try The Workplace Chat for this, you will have better luck I think than trying to get a good Q/A format for it. — enderland ♦ 1 min ago
