@Chad How did you know where I purchase my footwear? You have eyes everywhere.
@enderland Mods never tire of me. Why I remember that just the other day you guys were thanking me for something or another. Because I fill such big shoes (see above)

Q: Adding an after-the-facts

ReacesI asked for advice a while back in a question here. And I ended up acting on said advice, in a way that actually had a positive outcome. I'd like to put this somewhere, to show the people who answered that their advice mattered. How would I go about this? Commenting on each answer seems excessi...

@Undo I'll look at the readme - you were awesomely quick at the Sec.SE results

@JaneS yeah. Also btw, you can hit the little arrow on the far right of a message and reply directly to a message if you want as this can help make it easier to know what message you are replying to (not a big deal in this room, but if ever the room is complicated it can be meaningful)
@jmac note to self: don't feed the ego troll? :)

@JaneS Well you got my one and only vote Jane... so dont let me down :)
@jmac I work for NSA Data destruction department... Where we destroy all the data by putting it into a computer for proper sorting and eventual destruction.

Anyone have insight on why a job offer would specify a 90-day "trial period" for an explicitly at-will position?
It's not eligibility for benefits, that's at 30 days

@Air it's far easier to not renew/sign a contract than to fire someone

Air
@enderland Eh, I dunno about that... I was kinda-sorta randomly let go last year while represented by a union in an at-will position and my union rep totally blew me off saying there was nothing they or I could do about it
I kind of suspected the rep didn't know what they were talking about, but unless I was prepared to litigate, it's a moot point

it's a lot less messier though, you probably don't have to pay unemployment, it's not being "laid off / fired" etc

Air
Ahh, unemployment liability might explain it
Give them a bit longer for the previous employer to be on the hook

some countries it is also nearly impossible to fire people (I think Europe is this way)
most larger companies probably have a somewhat defined/rigid process for actually firing someone, even if they are "at will"

This is related to a US NGO with 5 employees. Just by the way.
My wife is probably going to get a 44% pay increase next month as a result. :)

hmm. small companies like that also have a huge risk of hiring the wrong person, maybe that's their "insurance" policy?

Air
I suppose we could ask them to clarify but it's not really a term we're concerned about, and we have other things to focus on

if you want a more cynical perspective @Chad probably can help out ;)

Air

8:26 PM
I would guess that at 90 days there is effective tenure. I worked for an NGO once and basically once you get out of probation there is no reason to fire someone because they are getting paid for that person to be there... if they need more work done they get a stiped to hire someone new to do that work. So you want to make sure its not someone that is going to be a problem to stick in a corner down the road

8:49 PM
@Chad @Chad no pressure! :)
@enderland @enderland Thanks! :)

aww man, my boss will be visiting my location tomorrow - I was planning on working from home...
#notreallyprobs

@enderland @enderland Nothing like having to wear pants when you weren't expecting to! :)))

Yeah. I'm lucky in that I can work from home

Unfortunately they don't allow us to. I work as a contractor to the government.

My team is pretty global, and my commute is about 50 minutes, so my boss lets me work from home a few days a week

9:03 PM
I have about the same commute, but apparently contractors can't be trusted to work from home. Apparently :/

@JaneS I hate having a long commute (but have been doing that for nearly 2.5 years straight now, woops) but since my entire team is not sitting at the location I am at (or country, lol)... makes it easier to justify
We'll move closer to work around Christmas I think, that'll be nice

@enderland @enderland Yes, if everyone's remote anyway then it doesn't really matter if you're sitting at work talking to them via Skype or at home doing the same thing :) I'm up to 9.5 years doing this commute. I'm getting old enough and grumpy enough to move closer soon :)

Yeah, I'd like to bike to work long term (hard when it's nearly 30 miles, though I did it one last summer)
also if you hit the reply it auto adds the @enderland notification

@enderland Thanks again! Yep, apparently I did nominate to be a mod! ;)

Chat is all kinds of weird
And all sorts of really hidden "features" or bugs

9:20 PM
@enderland As I am learning :)

10:09 PM
@JaneS Don't worry, even the most experienced users find that upon becoming a mod there are a great many mistakes to make with a whole new suite of tools

10:26 PM
@Air If I am able to win the election I'm sure I'll find that out! The hard way, of course :)

10:42 PM
@Air or things you learn about, I've been a moderator almost exactly a year now and still learn things constantly

Air
11:15 PM
@JaneS You'd have my vote, if I weren't principally a lurker on your site :)
(It occurs to me that since we get three votes and there are three candidates, that could be a somewhat Machiavellian endorsement)

11:36 PM
@Air Thanks! I just lurk very loudly ;)
At least the worst I can come is third place! Do I get a bronze medal? :)

Air
A sigh of relief, maybe, given what I've seen of Workplace drama :P

11:54 PM
@Air LOL! Apparently I am a sucker for punishment for nominating in the first place :)
