Q: Is interesting activity on cstheory.stackexchange.com decreasing over the last year or so?

Neal YoungI have the subjective impression that the rate at which interesting questions and answers are being posted on cstheory.stackexchange.com has decreased substantially over the last year or so. Does anybody else have this impression (maybe answer that in a comment)? Or even better, does anyone hav...

↑ some nice analysis of Computer Science also that shows upward trends in comparison! o_O

Is it possible to write algorithms in the answer?

@emab yes, I thought this was one of the very good points and assumptions of CS.
@emab here? Is it intentional to put "---" in the code? Have you considered `` <- code mark?

vzn
@emab its better to use pseudocode around here as the purists dont like particular languages :|

@vzn He did. Also very nice answer.

2:41 AM
@EvilJS Yes, and I had really hard time aligning those dashes. I considered using code, but I have some math notations that will not appear in the code.

3:05 AM
@emab nice! its helpful to link questions asking about in here. there is a fixed space code block feature/ fmt with scroll bar but yours actually looks nicer :)
so are you an undergraduate?

3:37 AM
@vzn no, actually I am a PhD student

4:22 AM
@vzn I modified my solution, because there was a mistake over there. It is all good now, and the algorithm is much shorter now.

5:10 AM
@vzn just destroyed it with spacing, sorry

@emab so what are you studying for Phd work? what year into it are you?

@vzn could you participate in meta discussion?

@EvilJS where?

Q: computer contest problems

Hendrik JanThe question Proof of correctness for the greedy solution of uva10249 The Grand Dinner is presently on hold. It is definitely not self contained, so I understand it needs editing. My question concerns the remark by @Raphael: "It's inappropriate to outsource contest questions". Let me start by sa...

It was posted earlier, but I think people should participate - share opinion / insight / make some policy?

vzn
ok voted/ wrote something

Ok, I thought about answer, so maybe I did it wrong and should have commented?

@vzn lately have been implementing all basic algorithms for MST - Kruskal, Prim etc. And trying to make dynamic solution for one question. And started "now is the time to use fuzzy logic for the image processing".
What about you? Any fancy projects, news, robots built?

vzn
5:21 PM
@EvilJS lately banging hard on a GA for collatz, getting unusual/ notable results, not many lines (~½K lines) but very tricky/ delicate to debug, timeconsuming to run, etc... lots more info in my blog, continuing to write up intermediate results/ chgs etc, thx for asking
how does MST show up/ get applied in your research? "fuzzy logic," for OCR?

6:00 PM
@vzn fuzzy logic for OCR, I used it several years ago, I do not have any excuse why I stopped, results are getting cleaner than in other techniques.
@vzn I cannot explain it, MST + dynamic modification struct me as possible answer here
I just woke up seeing two coloured graphs and the idea to modify Prim. So much better than skewed PCA with headache...

I am moving to Canada in July
with permanent resident status

@overexchange awesome

6:33 PM
@overexchange awesome! great to hear! congratulations! we were mentioning you recently because EJS is not entirely liking his current environment/ locale either & youre working effectively towards a huge shift. did you line up a job already (re "interaction designer")?

2 hours later…
8:18 PM
@vzn what do you mean by unusual?

8:37 PM
@Raphael There is a new question about reccurence. (You have seen it 3 min ago). How exactly solving reccurence (when linear) by matrix multiplication looks like?
I have heard it several times, never actually done it or seen matrices to do so. Maybe it is so obvious, but until I read it, I would never thought about such operation...

@EvilJS I have no idea; I don't think I've ever done it.
At least not expressed in these terms; maybe mathematicians express one of the methods I know in terms of matrix multiplication.

@Raphael same here... Thanks anyway.
Can I flag such Q as unclear? There is no question there, copy-paste, but I would like to not abuse "unclearity" reason.

@EvilJS User me: fire away. Mod me: :-X

@RickDecker hi, do you know something about solving reccurence relation by matrix multiplication? Sorry to bother, but you might know the magic behind such operation.
@Raphael I assume it is 50% yes + 50% of :-X which is more than 2% yes?

8:55 PM
yet to line up a job.
Planning to work on angular technology

@overexchange angular.js?

vzn
9:14 PM
@EvilJS am applying some novel techniques, dont know if results are meaningful yet. they seem to have some effect but maybe not breakthru... surprise... still poking around as we speak...

@vzn novel to you? Novel in general? Novel from the fresh papers?

vzn
@EvilJS very few ppl are experimenting with +

9:33 PM
yes
I heard that, US and Canada has lot of work in AngularJS

@vzn very few people admit publicly that they do until they have full-blown results and in some cases they work around result to show that they did on their own, you'll never know the truth ;) it seems so much more awesome when you provide kick-ass proof on your own than by saying: I feeded tricky query to my automated proof maker and it solved it =^.^+
@overexchange I have read job offers for JS proficient programmers and Angular.js was in the majority treated as "good to know" or "needed".
@vzn anyway, like in TCS answer you got about primes and ML, you have to be careful, but please share.

vzn
9:52 PM
@EvilJS there are lots of details in my recent blog(s). rather doubt that anybody publishes machine-discovered proofs as their own. does not really seem ethical...
have long thought this general area is ripe for a breakthru but havent been able to locate it myself yet :|

@EvilJS Angular 1.x or Angular 2.0?

10:10 PM
@vzn it is not ethical, it is just how the world works...
@overexchange Unless explicitly stated (2.0) the most offers were vague "Excellent experience with Angular JS".
@overexchange I am looking at job offer in Ontario posted yesterday "[...] They will have at least 2-3 years experience in UI programming / Web Design development using HTML5 / CSS3 / AngularJS / Bootstrap [...]"

@EvilJS As a mod, I'm bound to policy which is "don't close dumps". As a user, I have no patience left for them.
@overexchange Isn't that a little narrow for a career? o.o Congrats to getting where you wanted to get, anyway.

10:42 PM
@Raphael But being very thorough in such cases is not a bad thing ;)

@EvilJS Of course not.
As a mod, I can relax because the community also has votes. ;)
