12:00 AM
@derobert - another query, do you know if there is a way to parse the svn log to know which commits have patches.
I tried $] svn log | grep patch and while it gives those patches as commit messages, it doesn't tell the revision number/commit number.

1 hour later…
1:01 AM
@shirish svn log has an --xml option...

@derobert can you extrapolate what do you mean by svn log has an --xml option. Could you share an e.g. or two as to how's that useful or can be useful ?

@shirish well, it can output in XML. That's intended to be parsed.

/me confesses of being a bit more git aware than svn aware.

you can also do svn log on a single directory, if all the patches are in one directory
(sorry, half paying attention, playing Minecraft :-) )

@derobert no problems, as and when you finish minecraft, if possible using our netspeed directory, if you could figure out how this could be done would be done, would just make it easier to understand.

7 hours later…
7:37 AM
@shirish Power went out, and I went to sleep. :-)

Faheem, no issues, have lived through that as well :)
If you read above, the only issue seems to be if there is a way to grep through svn log commit messages.
making sure that revision number is also known . Dunno if this is possible or not.

@shirish Ok. You still use svn?

Faheem, no but for the use-case of debian-gnome, they still use svn . Lot of people in debian have moved onto git.
but for this team, I think because of the history of the 100-150 odd source packages over 10+ years and all residing in one giant repository, they have been unable to make a switch to git.
the debian-mate has done it much better but it's a smaller team as well.

@shirish I see.
BTW, was just thinking about your friend Praveen the Pirate. When he came to see me, he looked at my browser, which is Chromium, and said, that's a lot of tabs.
He was right. And that is still the case.
@shirish if Anthony helped with your blog post you should acknowledge him. It's not compulsory, but it is polite.

@FaheemMitha , I don't have an issue in acknowledging @derobert, just need something more than saying @derobert at chat.stackexchange.com .

@shirish His name is Anthony DeRobertis. And you don't have to mention SE.
You can just say something like - thanks to Anthony DeRobertis for helpful suggestions on this blog post. Or something like that.
Chat is not an official part of SE, in any case.

@FaheemMitha updated that, hope that's good enough.
@FaheemMitha the last two lines, is that good or you want me to give something more ?

@shirish That's fine. And nobody is requiring you to do anything. It's just a suggestion.
@shirish Looks good.

cool :)

My connection to SE chat is being flakey for some reason.

10:03 AM
same here.

@shirish this is probably my academic background showing. One of the few things I like from academia is a strong policy of giving credit. Again, nobody is requiring you to do anything.

@FaheemMitha same here, was not sure what the credit should be because @derobert would have looked strange, so needed a name, do agree with crediting people.

@shirish "derobert from unix.stackexchange.com chat" would also have been Ok, if you didn't have any other information.
I've credited people in a similar fashion before.

ohk... didn't know that.

@shirish well, crediting people is better than not crediting them. Even if they don't know you have credited them.

10:12 AM
sure, am glad though it's behind us now.

@shirish :-)
Sorry, didn't mean to make an issue of it.

@FaheemMitha Wow, I have to say that it would bother me very much if someone were to use my real name without asking me first. I agree it is nice to give credit but not by using real-world names. Not unless explicitly allowed to.
What's wrong with thanking "User @derobert from U&L"?

@terdon Nothing. @shirish I think terdon makes a good point.
Though Anthony makes no secret of his real name, so I don't think it is an issue in this case.
OTOH, if you were to post Gilles real name somewhere, it might create an furor, because he clearly wishes to remain anonymous.

@FaheemMitha I don't know. I knew it and you did but we've spent some time chatting with him. I don't think he would mind to tell you the truth, I just don't feel comfortable using it. Same with slm, I know his name and I know he makes no secret of it but I'd ask before telling anyone.

This is of course, assuming that Gilles isn't an alien or a bot, in which case he might not have a regular name...

10:23 AM
It's on his profile or his blog and easy to find, it's just not my information to impart.
Slm's name, not Giles's.

@terdon Yes, fair enough. One should always respect people's privacy.
In Anthony's case, I've credited him publicly before using his real name. No, actually, I told someone to credit him, I think.
@terdon Yes, got it. We all know Gilles is a mystery wrapped in a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
Or however it goes.

:)
What's this stackegg thing?

@shirish I suggest you leave your credit the way it is for now, and check with Anthony. If he wants you to change it, he'll let you know.
@terdon stackegg?

On the side bar on the main page

@terdon which main page?

10:29 AM
Ours or any of the SE network

@terdon yes, I see. I think some SE employee invented it as a way to waste people's time.

:)

@terdon any idea about that question I linked to above?

@FaheemMitha The OP has answered it.

@terdon well, I did point out that he was loading nouveau. And I didn't notice that he had fixed the problem.
Though I don't understand why that would happen. Shouldn't X just load one thing?
Or is this was happens when you don't specify in xorg.conf? X, left to its own devices, does crazy things?
Though the poster might have had an xorg.conf. Hard to tell with people who don't know what they are doing.

10:38 AM
No idea. Xorg works in mysterious ways.

@terdon hopefully not that mysterious.

Hi fellas

2 hours later…
12:59 PM
@shirish svn log -v svn://anonscm.debian.org/svn/pkg-gnome/packages/unstable/netspeed/debian/patches‌ does what I think you're asking for.
@terdon Looks like Stack Exchange is celebrating April 1 early.

Yeah, whopee!

@terdon do you think if I just keep closing questions, I can kill the site?
Oh no! Your Site was doing so badly that there was no choice but to shut it down entirely. Bummer. But don't be discouraged, just try again!
YES! I HAVE ENDED THE SITE.
Come to think of it, I should have done that on Emacs.

@derobert Oy!
Go type a colon, vimboy.

@terdon We could use this thing to hold proxy editor wars.
I will note that Vi and Vim is in 18th, whereas Emacs is in 60th. I'm not sure that means that Vi wins, though, considering!

Now, that would be a game worth playing :)

1:39 PM
Just me, or are all the SE sites incl. stackoverflow going slow this morning? Or at least having 'hiccups'?
And they just went down for maintenance.
We are disabling the eggs for a moment while we optimize them a bit. They'll return soon!
Awesome! The April Fools joke took out the network.

lol

Now I'll have to do actual work. Like apply a bloody OpenLDAP security patch.

2:01 PM
Ok, turns out I didn't have the Debian-specific '* by self write' problem. Because I removed that rule long ago when setting up LDAP, because it obviously was wrong for our setup...

2:27 PM
Are people actually playing with that stackeggs thing?

@FaheemMitha Enough to take out the servers, apparently. There were quite a few people playing (like, over 40) on Stack Overflow.

@derobert how do you know it took out the servers? Couldn't it have been unrelated?

@FaheemMitha See the tweet above.

@derobert That sounds like they are just talking about the eggs.

@FaheemMitha Look at the previous tweet, they were looking into the performance problems. Then they disable the eggs with a message about needing to optimize them (on SO only, it seems, or maybe the trilogy, didn't check) and the performance problems go away. Also see meta.stackexchange.com/questions/252382/…
They're on Server Fault and Super User, so just disabled on Stack Overflow.

2:32 PM
@derobert Yes, it might be related. But in statistics they teach us that correlation does not imply causation.
Pure maths is an even harder taskmaster. Things look like they are true, and are not actually true.
Or rather, that they should self-evidently be true, but are not.
Ask a non-math person whether the series \sum_k \frac{1}{k} converges or not. And that isn't even a good example. (Of course, they might not know what converging means).
Enough rambling. Dinner time.

@FaheemMitha Yeah. Ask a non-math person and just get a blank stare...
But in this case we're not just seeing correlation. Their tweeting about it is presumably an attempt to convey some message, not just raw data.

2:51 PM
This game can become somewhat addictive...

3:05 PM
We are back at full functionality and all stable. We'll keep an eye on the impact of recent features throughout the day.

@JohnWHSmith What game?
@derobert If their wacky joke is causing them performance problems (and I don't see why it should) why don't they just come right out and say it? Too embarrassed?

@FaheemMitha Well, they can't call it a wacky joke today. It's no doubt an essential new feature.

@derobert An essential April 1st feature?

@FaheemMitha Yes, at least through 23:59:59.

@derobert Fine, I'll refer to it as a wacky joke tomorrow. Or the day after tomorrow in my time zone.

3:17 PM
Hah, I created a user on Emacs just to check how their egg is doing (really! I didn't even vote!) and it turns out their site has been closed. Guess we won the editor war!

English should invent a word for "the day after tomorrow".
@derobert Whose site has been closed?

@derobert Looks like someone's egg didn't make it. But I'm unclear on the rules of this game, and don't care enough to try to figure it out.

Q: Is there a one-word English term for the day after tomorrow?

tyndall Possible Duplicate: How obsolete is the word “overmorrow”? Is there a one-word English term for the day after tomorrow? Perhaps a term that has fallen out of modern English usage. One that would complete the sequence of: today, tomorrow, ...

Do you think if I started using Übermorgen it would catch on?
It's got a certain ring to it.
Or better, overmorrow. Yes, that could catch on.
In a world where the unfortunate verb "twerking" can make it, I don't see why "overmorrow" should not have a chance.
@derobert for the record, I preferred unicoins. They should have kept those.

Or maybe they could go for shoes, to go along with winter's hats.

@derobert you lost me there.

3:29 PM
@FaheemMitha the winter bash is all hats, so they could go for other apparel. Maybe our avatars need shoes...

@derobert shoes for the avatars? as a April 1st thing?

sure. would be a good joke. Or maybe some other silly accessory.

@FaheemMitha There going to be millions using "Übermorgen" from day one. But the Umlaut is going to be a problem for some newcomers. "Overmorgen "has a smaller starting base (about 1/5th), but no umlaut, so it might gain more popularity among newcomers

@Anthon Is overmorgen an actual word?

Yes in Dutch it is.
And used in normal speech/writing. Ie. it is not obsolete like "overmorrow' is in English.

3:38 PM
@Anthon yes, apparently yes. So it just needs someone to popularize it in English.
So, I guess I just need to become a best-selling novelist, and use the word overmorgen a lot. That should do it.

@Anthon In English, we'll just randomly drop the umlaut. Look at how many ways we spell résumé/resumé/resume.

What should I call my first book? I know - Overmorgen!
@derobert English doesn't really seem to have accents. Either that, or they were lost a long time ago.

@FaheemMitha English has a few for borrowed words.

I heard a rumor that once upon a time, English even had sexes/genders for things the way that Romance languages do.
@derobert Yes, but I meant for non-borrowed words.

Some of my US colleagues knew that Fahrvergnügen had an umlaut.

3:42 PM
Often übermensch keeps its umlaut.
But that's probably because it isn't really in common use.

Umlauts are quite often kept for obvious borrows.

@FaheemMitha They actively worked against genders. I remember they had a show "No sex please we're British" in London.

@Anthon I heard of that show too.
I wish there was some way to tell people "please mention your freaking distribution". Is there some way to customize the message users see when they go to answer a question?

maté is often written with an accent, but that's only in English. Neither Spanish (where we borrowed it from) nor Quechuan (where they got it from) has that accent mark.

I'm getting old and cranky.
What is your operating system/ distribution, please? And are you using your distribution's binary package, or not? And if not, why not? Ok, answering my own question - /usr/local/sbin is clearly not a system installation. Use the packaged binary, and your problems will likely go away. — Faheem Mitha 2 mins ago
@derobert What does that mean?

3:47 PM
The latin "et" has its own special character in English

@Anthon it does?

&

@FaheemMitha it's a beverage.

It is actually the combined two characters as one (drop your head to the right a bit)

@derobert oh
@Anthon Oh, that.

3:49 PM
Yerba mate (from Spanish [ˈʝerβa ˈmate]; Portuguese: erva-mate [ˈɛʁvɐ ˈmatʃi]) is a species of the holly family (Aquifoliaceae), with the botanical name Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil. named by the French botanist Auguste François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire. It is well known as the source of the beverage called mate (Portuguese: chimarrão, tererê/tereré and other variations), traditionally consumed in central and southern South America, particularly Argentina, Bolivia, Southern and Center-Western Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Southern Chile. It is also very popular in Syria where it ...
(though note wikipedia spells without the accent)

@Anthon Interesting. I didn't know that is where it came from.

@derobert that article would be half as long if the botanist had had a shorter name.

@Anthon LOL
It's French, so most of its probably silent letters anyway...

@derobert AFAIK only the last e from Hilaire

The final s, the "t" from "saint" and the H from Hilaire. Now I don't think anyone ever called the botanist by its full name...
Oh yes, the "e" as well.

3:52 PM
@FaheemMitha I'm all for it! Starting to revive it as well (it's an obsolete word in English) as from today!

@Fabby I don't have time to start today, but overmorrow I will start using it.

@Fabby overmorgen or overmorrow?

Overmorrow...

Personally I favor overmorrow.
@Fabby Ok

Overmorgen I use regularly, though not in English... ;-)

3:54 PM
Wow, this actually exists...

@Fabby You're a Dutch speaker?

All 3: Flemish, Afrikaans, Dutch...
German, English and French too.

@Fabby "location International". Coy much?

The others are rusty...

You should change it to: "International Man of Mystery".

3:56 PM
If you speak 3 or more languages you're multi-lingual. If you speak 2 languages you are bilingual. If you speak language ...

Italian is OK
русский язык, magyr and Arab are rusty

... and if you speak no languages, you're Google Translate.

@Anthon Unilingual

@Anthon American, English, French or Italian.

@derobert :D Correct!

3:57 PM
Yeah pick the one you want to annoy :-p

@Anthon Strictly speaking, I'm American and I speak 5. Can understand a few more.

@terdon Are you counting American and English as separate languages?

@FaheemMitha No

Born in the USA, I've heard that somewhere before I think

@Anthon You'll probably fail to annoy most Americans with that.

3:58 PM
@terdon Oh, I misread. Sorry.

I have annoyed them for over 5 years, not sure if they let me into the country once more.

I once got a proposal for a green card...
and I wasn't really interested...

@terdon You're actually European. Fess up.

@FaheemMitha Well, I do have an American passport. I just have a Greek one as well.

And as my boss kept pestering me to come...

4:00 PM
@terdon Born and brought up in Greece. Yes, you're a real Yank.

:)

... I told him I could only live in the US for a maximum of 2 years..

@Anthon It might be a book, or a song or a movie, or something.
@Fabby Why a maximum of two years?

That was to elicit that question and he did ask (as you just did)...
... and the answer was: "Otherwise I would start shooting people"...
He never asked again! :D

@Fabby Are you sure you're not an American?

4:03 PM
:D Now I wouldn't care any more but back then I had a girl-friend and she spoke no English...
So she wasn't interested, so I wasn't either...
@derobert I told a few of my US colleagues and they knew me better then the boss, because they burst out laughing when I told them the reason why...

@Fabby shooting people is practically an American national sport. You would fit right in.

>:)
I thought the boss would see the irony...
But he didn't... ;-)
But I got what I wanted: he never asked again!
>:)

@Fabby this is probably a secret, but what is your nationality? Even Gilles has deigned to tell us that he is French.
Though he might mean he is a French bot, manufactured in secret in a French govt lab.

My dad is Italian, my mum's Flemish, I used to live in Russia...
Just back home for 3 weeks as I lost my job there...

@Fabby Wow, I see what you mean by international. How long did you live in Russia?
@Fabby And home is where?

4:08 PM
Looking for a new gig.
Where mum lives is home... ;-)

So, what did you think of Russia?

3 years in Russia.
It's a civilised country where all the citizens want the same thing as everyone else:

@Fabby that's a little non-specific.

to have a decent living; for their children to have a better life then themselves, for the government to stay out of their business!
;-)

Still non-specific...

4:10 PM
@FaheemMitha Specific enough?

Actually, I've met a few Russians. They struck me as quite different from the main run of Europeans.

if you ask a non-specific Q, you get a non-specific A!

@Fabby nope. I want you to dish, man.

Fire away!
What do you want to know?
(be specific! :D )
pretend it's a U&L Q!
(I'll have a smoke in the mean time)

@Fabby :-) Not sure what to ask.

4:11 PM
:D :D :D

Fine, what did you think of the women?
That seems like a reasonable male question to ask.
I had a major thing for a Russian girl once. She was totally nuts unfortunately.
But I don't know if that was because she was Russian, or it was just her. Hopefully the latter.

Isn't the English proverb: "It takes one to know one"?

I guess the other obvious question is to ask about the conditions, economic and otherwise.
@Anthon ?

I moved there because of the women...
(well: one in particular)
Russian Women are quite normal...
Like everywhere else I've dated...
(EU continent: a few nationalities, US)
A few myths:
Russians are heavy drinkers...
No they're not...
It's a country with a very low standard of living...
No it's not...
(50 Mbps Internet at 12,5$/ month anyone???)
They're unfriendly...
No they're not... But:

I've had it on good authority that it is a country run by gangsters. Then again, that's true of a lot of countries. How recently were you there?

4:17 PM
If you're in Siberia and you don't speak Russian, they think you're a moron...
>:)

@Fabby Internet speed does not define standard of living.

3 weeks???
Nah, but it's just an indicator...

@Fabby oh.
You were there 3 weeks ago? Where?

it's not the Ritz, but all of Moscow is better then some parts of NY...
Moscow.
I own property there!
Just no job any more...
So I returned home to look for a new gig.
Now at my sister's! :)

@Fabby Ah, Moscow. And you found living there a generally positive experience?

4:19 PM
Helping her children with their Lubuntu laptops!
Yeah... A bit laid back (not Californian laid back) but still...

@Fabby tell them to use Debian instead. All the cool kids do.
Ask Anthony.

:D

@Fabby Russia is laid back? Interesting. That doesn't really come across.

Not as driven as the US or the EU...
friends & family are more important then work...

@Fabby Hmm. I see. More focus on quality of life? Then again, I've heard Italy is relatively relaxed. Or so some Italians have told me.

4:21 PM
Yeah...

The Americans are a bit nuts about their ethic. Some of them, anyway.

Russians are more like my Italian family then the Flemish part of the family
@FaheemMitha Which part of "ethic"
work ethic?
or everything?

@Fabby work ethic. yes, sorry. missed out a word there.
No, they have this so-called Protestant work ethic thing going on.

:-)

Work for its own sake is good. More is better. Nuts.

4:24 PM
Some... Yes...

The Protestant work ethic (or the Puritan work ethic) is a concept in theology, sociology, economics and history which emphasizes hard work, frugality and diligence as a constant display of a person's salvation in the Christian faith, in contrast to the focus upon religious attendance, confession, and ceremonial sacrament in the Catholic tradition. The phrase was initially coined in 1904–5 by Max Weber in his book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. == Basis in Protestant theology == It is argued that Protestants, beginning with Martin Luther, had reconceptualized worldly work as...
@Fabby approximately what percent of people speak English in Moscow?

I dunno...
Under 25? most...
Over 40? Very little...

"But these days since you have EOL conversions on sophisticated editors that have ftp and sftp, (which I also have demo-ed to this team), you dont really need vi."
@derobert nb: vi is obsolete.
@Fabby so younger people speak more English?
Maybe it's all that pop culture. They need to watch all those Marvel movies, after all.

@FaheemMitha Yes! :-)
Actually, it's more the music...
They like their movies dubbed...

@Fabby I just learned of a song called "go diggety".
That looks like something that would travel.

4:32 PM
:)
Got to go!
Bye!

Bye @Fabby.

5:29 PM
Is it just me, or is there something weird going on with gmane? The links in this thread aren't working for me -> thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/184155
@derobert Do you know how X actually chooses what drivers to run. See for example
3
Q: Ubuntu (14.10, 14.04) Graphics rendering issues with nvidia 331, 346 when using two screens at once (built in and external)

phoenixI bought a new dell laptop ( inspiron 15 3000 series ) with 2 gb nvidia geforce 117m. It shipped with ubuntu 14.04. That was very choppy and slow. I installed nvidia 346.47 ( from the nvidia website). This caused my lightdm to stop working. Next time i tried the same thing and my screen froze. I...

If the poster is to be believed, he didn't have an xorg.conf file, but X was trying to load nvidia and nouveau. He solved the problem by removing the nouveau driver, which should not have been necessary.

6:11 PM
@FaheemMitha He probably used xorg.edgers which repackages the 346.47 as "nouveau".
It has nothing to do with nouveau though...
(in the "open source nouveau" sense)

@Fabby I don't follow. what is xorg.edgers? And what is 346.47? A version of nvidia?
Ypur xorg.conf listed both nvidia and intel as drivers. While I'm no expert, I think this is a bad idea. I recommend you take out the intel. Save the original file as backup in the unlikely event that X insists on having both present. — Faheem Mitha 39 secs ago
Can anyone think of any reason one might want this?

I'll have a look...
On standard Ubuntu (Unity) there is no xorg.conf...
Xubuntu (pure X) does have a xorg.conf.
He installed nvidia.run (always a bad idea) without uninstalling the nouveau.
His BIOS was probably set to "hybrid"
so Unity tried to load all installed video drivers.
and nVidia .run 346 proprietary conflicted with Canonical-packaged nVidia 331 proprietary drivers...
nothing to do with nouveau.

6:28 PM
@Fabby the X log said something about nouveau drivers, I think. See
pastebin.com/ZhbqX4fc for xorg log... @Farheem — phoenix Mar 23 at 10:49
At one point it has
27.906] (II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
[ 27.907] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so
[ 27.907] (II) Module nouveau: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
Looks like nouveau to me.
@Fabby what is a "hybrid bios", and what does that have to do with X?

(scratch, scratch)
A Hybrid graphics subsystem is where both the on-board and discrete GPUs are both activated.
When you do nothing, the on-board is used
when fork a program with a special command-line (optirun) that application is run on the discrete GPU.

@Fabby Oh. Never heard of it. So you need to disable the on-board?

no!
you have both!

@Fabby I see. I ran into that in another question recently.
@Fabby ok

This allows you to use low-power on-board for most things
and activate the GPU only for stuff that needs it.
better battery life!
That's basically it.
However, in this case, I think he had both Canonical and nVidia drivers installed...
and the canonical ones are called "nouveau" internally...
<sigh>
as are the xorg.edgers ones.
However, they're just a repackage of the proprietary ones...
I only found out by running vrms...
(that I still had proprietary drivers while I thought I was using FLOSS)

@Fabby If so, that is way confusing. And how can you be sure they aren't the actual nouveau drivers? See "Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so" above. This looks like nouveau to me, and on wheezy they belong to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.

It's a hack...
It's confusing...
I know that if I type nvidia-settings --version I've got some sort of proprietary drivers...
or by running vrms
vrms = Virtual Richard M Stallman

@Fabby well, I told him that loading the Intel and nvidia drivers at the same time was probably a mistake. I guess it is possible that this is by design, two drivers with this optional optirun thing, but he didn't mention anything about that.
Someone else posted a question about a laptop with this special kind of hardware, but there was no indication this was the case here.

A: My graphic card is not recognized on laptop/debian

Faheem MithaThe poster has a Nvidia Optimus laptop. It turns out, per the Bumblebee page on the Debian Wiki, that you need to do: apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia primus and remove any existing xorg.conf and prevent debconf from creating a xorg.conf during the installation of the packages above. @Spiralw...

This is something called an Optimus laptop. Something special.

reading...
Bumblebee is the FLOSS version of the proprietary OptiRun...
I don't use any of that shit...
If I want NVidia, I reboot, change the BIOS to "Discrete GPU" and then continue to boot into Ubuntu...
I like KISS... ;-)

@Fabby Speaking of Russia, I just asked about a Russian film I remembered seeing in the 70s. Someone on SE found it in no time flat.

Q: Russian movie about a Russian and American boy being kidnapped

Faheem MithaSometime in the 70s (I think) I watched a film, whose English title was "The Dear Boy". I think it was a Russian film. The film was about two boys, a Russian and an American, being kidnapped. I forget the details, but the striking thing about the plot is that the Russian boy is very passive, but...

@Fabby yes, but I think is different from the earlier question we were discussing.

Yes, because this one uses bumblebee as a solution to the same kind of problem: Hybrid graphics...

That was just a regular Dell Inspiron laptop I think. No graphics exotica.

Yup! ;-)

Though I could be mistaken, of course. Anyone care to settle this?

Busy with other stuff... Sorry.
