changing to MATE, discovered that sometimes the gnome-shell process made Firefox render slower than it should

anyone else seen the new Lennart Poettering's new proposal to encapsulate everything in "runtimes"? In a nutshell it sounds like apps will be distributed with all of their dependencies (which other apps can then depend on), much like an OS X app can contain whatever libs it needs in its .app directory. The proposal also depends on btfs heavily to deduplicate runtimes with the same libraries and to create a spaghetti monster of overlays on /usr to make it all work.
move over systemd, the new controversy has arrived

yay! Now I have both mate and gnome 3 running, WTF!

@Braiam - do you have an answer for this? I know you're pretty free with the downvotes, so I'd like to know what you think:

Q: Why answer a question not worth your upvote?

mikeservI see it most often on the sed/awk/grep/perl type questions, but it does happen pretty frequently I think. A lot of times you'll find like 4 or 5 answers on a question with 0 votes and it just boggles my mind. Personally, I wouldn't bother providing an answer to a question which I did not think w...

Hi, @NoTime.

Hi @mikeserv

I knew who you were talking to

Yeah, sorry. I am bouncing around doing stuff

1:51 AM
You're probably a busy person, which explains the nick.

Have Arch in my virtual box, Learn C the hard way, some reddit stuff, archwiki, grimms fairy tales and other stuff up.
I am at times. I don't like to disapoint

Is it harder than the easy way?

I am just starting it, so far I have learned hello world, basic make files. So not that far along, it seems helpful though

well, best of luck.

thanks. I got some other programming resources from Braiam. Do you do any programming?

1:59 AM
@mikeserv Maybe they don't think the question is well written, or lazy, or doesn't show enough effort? But that answers to that question might be useful or interesting to someone? It might be about not wanting to "reward" an unworthy questioner.
This is all just speculative, of course.

afk

@FaheemMitha - perhaps - but then - why answer? if you desire to deprive asker, it seems the simplest way to go is not answering. also speculative, of course.

@mikeserv Like I said, they think the answer might be useful/interesting to others, and, perhaps more importantly, they want more Imaginary Internet Points for themselves. Also speculative (of course).

we could have some fun with this also speculative discussion, I think.

Personally, I think this falls into the category of "who cares"?

2:09 AM
Well, I do.

@mikeserv Interesting notions of fun you have.

That's why I asked.

@mikeserv Fair enough. I doubt many others will, though.

Probably true. also speculative, of course

@mikeserv :-)
Still not doing the reply thingy, I see.

2:10 AM
Is it worse than answering in the comments?

@NoTime ?

@NoTime - touche. That's a bad habit of mine.

Anyone care to explain?

(I am guilty of this too) In regards to not up-voting an answered question, I guess what is the alternative.
@FaheemMitha Instead of upvoting and answering, is it better to answer the question in the comments?

I dunno if it was targeted at me but sometimes I just leave a comment with an answer or something that points at an answer.
But those are the ones I probably don't care to upvote either.

2:12 AM
@NoTime No, answers should be posted as answer, unless they are like super-sketchy.

Else the comment will just be a hopeful maybe because I have no idea and in that case the question is definitely upvoted.

I do sometimes answer questions as a comment with a pointer, but usually that is because I can't be bothered to write a real answer. And that is because I don't want to waste my time on someone without a clue. If they get back to me, respond sensibly, and are polite, I'm usually willing to follow up with a proper answer.

^this

@FaheemMitha I like when people say put it as answer and I'll accept

^this too

2:15 AM
For example there are a fair number of questions that are best answered by a backport, but typically people can't be bothered to try to learn about backporting. So, I say something like - try backporting, follow up if you have questions. Usually they don't. Would it make sense for me (in the first instance) to spend time writing a detailed answer on how to backport whatever, when possibly nobody cares? No.

I will sometimes answer it in comments, because the answer is sometimes simple, and it doesn't seem like it would be a good answer (and I don't know how to improve)

@NoTime double negative there. probably not what you meant.
I think you want to get rid of the "not".

edited :) yeah I'm typing one handed and helping wifey

@FaheemMitha see? No Time is busy. No Time can't be bothered about grammar!

@mikeserv We're all busy. And everyone likes to be appreciated.
Well, possibly time to try to go back to sleep. Take care everyone.

2:18 AM
I did the reply....

Sleep well

Sleep well, @FaheemMitha.

@mikeserv Thanks!
@NoTime Thanks.

i should go too
later

enjoy your dinner, @NoTime

@mikeserv there are people upvoting with out providing an answer as well :)

@Ramesh - of course!
Those are the best citizens.
But... do you not find it weird that someone would consider a question worth their answer and not their vote?

@mikeserv, I can find some examples for such cases as well.

For what cases? upvoted questions without answers?

I mean basically upvoting doesn't necessarily mean the OP gets a solution for his problems.

Hmmm...
Of course not - though it probably does make it more likely. Or, at least, it will highlight a question...

3:57 AM
Yeah, the users will feel encouraged if they get upvotes.
Upvoting is something which we cannot predict on how it works.
If a question with literally zero research effort has 10k views, it will end up getting around 100 votes.

Probably true. purely speculation, of course
But it won't get so many if it doesn't get upvoted.

I agree here. Again it is something that purely is unpredictable.

It's just weird to me that a question would get an answer and not an upvote. The latter thing requires almost zero effort on behalf of the viewer - it's cheap and easy - whereas the former thing requires a real effort.
Why put forth an effort for a question which was not worth the cheap, effortless thing in the first place?

one reason that I could think is, it won't be a good idea to encourage questions without research efforts right?

Well, yes, of course. But is not the answer more encouraging than the upvote? Certainly it costs the answering party more.

4:04 AM
If someone asks how to list a directory contents almost 10 to 15 people can give the answer at the same time. But that doesn't mean the question is a good question for which the answer could be found from a simple google search.

And a question with a 100 upvotes and no answer is still just an unanswered question.
Right - so why are those 10-15 people answering at all? They should be downvoting and voting to close.

That is entirely upto the individual who answers the question :)

So that's why I asked mine.

Ha, your question would be primarily opinion based in the main site.

Very true. It is tagged discussion.
As it seems to me, the community as a whole - the knowledge-base as a whole - is better served when a poor question is not answered. It also seems to me, that, for sake of the same, good questions are both answered when possible and upvoted as such.
