@slm are you going to give us something juicy with /proc?

Q: Find out current working directory of a running process?

slmWhat command(s) can one use to find out the current working directory (CWD) of a running process?

@chirp hi, so, did you run the same command from the info page?

@terdon hi, just copy&pasted and got to the expected results as described in the info page. Now playing around with options. Thanks for your support so far!

@chirp no problem, I'm learning this as I go along as well

@terdon after some trouble with browser, screenshot and GIMP, here's the whole procedure with cp --preserve=links … with[out] the -L option
@terdon and here the same thing with[out] the -H option
I work on Crunchbang Linux [Debian] with GNU coreutils 8.12.197-032bb

@chirp Well, I'll be. Looks like you've found a bug in the documentation. --preserve=links is sufficient to convert soft to hard!
Just tried it on my LMDE (debian) and it works the same way.
Huh
I added that to my answer, kudos for finding it!

2:04 AM
@terdon: Just sent a report to the bug mailing list of coreutils. Wow.

:)
Cool, is there a link or was it just an email?

I went through gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/… and sent an email. If this turns out to be a bug in the documentation, this might be considered to put into my CV ;).

heh :)
your 15 minutes huh?

nothing to boast about, but a sign of "read the manual thoroughly thus might also put some considerable weight on proper work".
I am slowly working my way under the hood of Linux and am currently very far away from doing paid work in this field [which is a goal but not my main motivation!].
Although 15 minutes of fame are nice too :)

Since you're here, what is that thing you have as an avatar image? I keep thinking I should recognize it but can't put my finger on it.

Aww… sniff… this is one of my robots assembled from LEGO parts - s/he's part of a group of three quite awkward, hilarious [at least in my opinion] robots that will one day star in stop-motion short films. Something I will restart in the near future.

nice!
OK, I get it, that's her right ear and her eye!

These are horns. And an eye, yes. I like horns - a one-size-fits-all tool for making things look less serious [try imagine someone you don't like with horns]

@terdon Re: stty and word erase - I'm not sure how one would specify ctrl-backspace. I'm using putty and it doesn't differentiate between backspace and ctrl-backspace. I could give examples on changing to other control combinations. Would that work?
@terdon I've added examples that don't include ctrl-backspace. Traditionally backspace sends either ctrl-h or ctrl-?. Don't know how it would send ctrl-ctrl-?.

@kurtm thanks, yeah ctrl+backspace is hard. My answer works for xterm and rxvt terminals though.

@slm
Since you're new to SE, downvoting someone who answered the question you posted and not the question you had in your head is not very nice. Instead of downvoting someone who tried to help you, clarify your question and leave a comment explaining what you actually want. — terdon 8 mins ago

@terdon how do you know who downvoted?

@Gilles good point. It just seemed obvious from the timing. I may well be wrong.

slm
10:19 PM
@terdon - it was not I

@slm it was not you who downvoted? I know, I was referring to whoever downvoted your answer which was perfectly reasonable at the time you posted it.

@slm you're the one user who couldn't do it

slm
what are we talking about then?

@slm I had assumed it was the OP who downvoted your question 5 secs after you posted it. I left him a comment to point out that that's not nice.
I then deleted my comment because Gilles pointed out that I have no way of knowing who cast that downvote.

slm
Oh yeah, I left that one after that, then deleted my A, didn't want to waste my time. We answered his Q and he hadn't fully asked it then did that. Not worth the aggrevation.
@terdon - once I saw the username I stopped too. He's done that before, not worth the time. He asks the Q with "more info available if requested" and gives no details, and then DV's answers that are trying to help.

10:35 PM
ah, so my comment may have been correct. Still, can't know so should shut up.

what filesystem do I want to use with SSD

slm
@terdon - I figured it was him too, but they're his to do with, but it's my choice to leave, so i did on that one, others to help.

I think I got this right... askubuntu.com/a/356488/169736 it was more observation then really investigation... (I'm aiming to become the fastest answerer in the west :P)

slm
@Braiam - that looks correct, I added a comment saying where the info from dircolors -p comes from.
