Q: Find out current working directory of a running process?

@slm are you going to give us something juicy with /proc?

What command(s) can one use to find out the current working directory (CWD) of a running process?

@terdon hi, just copy&pasted and got to the expected results as described in the info page. Now playing around with options. Thanks for your support so far!

@terdon after some trouble with browser, screenshot and GIMP, here's the whole procedure with cp --preserve=links … with[out] the -L option

@terdon and here the same thing with[out] the -H option

I work on Crunchbang Linux [Debian] with GNU coreutils 8.12.197-032bb

@chirp Well, I'll be. Looks like you've found a bug in the documentation. --preserve=links is sufficient to convert soft to hard!

Just tried it on my LMDE (debian) and it works the same way.

Cool, is there a link or was it just an email?

I went through gnu.org/software/coreutils/faq/… and sent an email. If this turns out to be a bug in the documentation, this might be considered to put into my CV ;).

nothing to boast about, but a sign of "read the manual thoroughly thus might also put some considerable weight on proper work".
I am slowly working my way under the hood of Linux and am currently very far away from doing paid work in this field [which is a goal but not my main motivation!].
Although 15 minutes of fame are nice too :)

Aww… sniff… this is one of my robots assembled from LEGO parts - s/he's part of a group of three quite awkward, hilarious [at least in my opinion] robots that will one day star in stop-motion short films. Something I will restart in the near future.

These are horns. And an eye, yes. I like horns - a one-size-fits-all tool for making things look less serious [try imagine someone you don't like with horns]

@terdon Re: stty and word erase - I'm not sure how one would specify ctrl-backspace. I'm using putty and it doesn't differentiate between backspace and ctrl-backspace. I could give examples on changing to other control combinations. Would that work?

@terdon I've added examples that don't include ctrl-backspace. Traditionally backspace sends either ctrl-h or ctrl-?. Don't know how it would send ctrl-ctrl-?.

@kurtm thanks, yeah ctrl+backspace is hard. My answer works for xterm and rxvt terminals though.

@slm I had assumed it was the OP who downvoted your question 5 secs after you posted it. I left him a comment to point out that that's not nice.

I then deleted my comment because Gilles pointed out that I have no way of knowing who cast that downvote.

Oh yeah, I left that one after that, then deleted my A, didn't want to waste my time. We answered his Q and he hadn't fully asked it then did that. Not worth the aggrevation.

@terdon - once I saw the username I stopped too. He's done that before, not worth the time. He asks the Q with "more info available if requested" and gives no details, and then DV's answers that are trying to help.
