May I ask how to achieve something similar? (not the actual example, just how to change the way authentication works?)

To illustrate the flexibility you face, consider the following situation: a system administrator (parent) wishes to improve the mathematical ability of her users (children). She can configure their favorite ``Shoot 'em up game'' (PAM-aware of course) to authenticate them with a request for the product of a couple of random numbers less than 12. It is clear that if the game is any good they will soon learn their multiplication tables. As they mature, the authentication can

So... I rebooted my laptop and got KDE5. So far, I've only found one problem—switching the date or time format in the dock apparently means learning how to write your own locales.

@FloriOn Thanks.
@derobert How is it?

@FaheemMitha Well, I did enough configuration to make it usable (apparently it didn't copy over any of my KDE4 config)... and I haven't written my own locale yet.

@derobert Ok. Why do you need to write your own locale?

Because they lost the 12 hour/24 hour clock option. And the sane date format option.
You just get to pick a country now...
And I don't know what day it is when I see 08/04/2015

@derobert take a break from using your computer for 132 days a year. Problem solved.

@Gilles LOL.

@derobert An upgrade lost your configuration. There's no way to change settings that don't make sense for everyone. Are you sure you aren't talking about Gnome?

@derobert Weird. Lost or misplaced?

@FaheemMitha Apparently they switched to a new locale implementation which doesn't have those features yet. There is a bug open, but hasn't been fixed yet.

@derobert so, they went the Gnome way...
if your locales aren't correct, Gnome would refuse to use the am/pm format

@derobert oh

do we have a DD?

@Braiam Hmm?
