@MatthewRead: I can't edit this question: android.stackexchange.com/questions/21542/…
Tried to retag it ('multiple-accounts' -> 'accounts') like proposed here meta.android.stackexchange.com/questions/1291/…

Strange that Al removed his username and avatar.

yeah. And only on AE, not the other sites.
@geff_chang: I guess, your meta-q has inspired him: plus.google.com/u/0/101093310520661581786/posts/SdbEyyBPJwa
lol user+number => user1
should've been 267
That's the same guy that wrote the saga, he was CM maintainer for Samsung who switched to Sony

@Peanut: I'd vote to close (but due to the bounty not possible). Seemingly a freemium model app, seems to localized for me, suggested the OP to ask the devel guys via mail.
@MatthewRead: Very strange, it does indeed work to edit now (tried it successfully), I could bet I saw a 'multiple-accounts' tag the last time I tried, I remember the Q (due to the answerer) quite clearly.
In other words: Nevermind

1:26 PM
@ce4 Ah that's the issue, thanks. I downloaded the app saw the "Lite" thing and assumed he was just getting confused because the title of the app is 'Pro'. Didn't actually bother trying to sign up for an account.

1:38 PM
@ce4 Reminds me of a case we had a while ago: a guy bounty-ing his Q, and only reacting with UPPERCASE COMPLAINTS and downvotes to all answers. Got a couple of flags, and 3 days later the bounty was taken away and the Q closed as not constructive.
@ce4 @Peanut so maybe the same should be done here? Flag it for Flow... ähem, mod attention?

@geff_chang huh, that is strange

Q: Issues with [emulator]

user1I draw your attention to the emulator tag. The tag wiki (not so clearly) says that this is tag is for questions about (a/the) Android Emulator. Unfortunately, it's being used for questions about any sort of emulator. (J2ME was the most recent one I saw.) It seems to me that if nothing else the...

@BryanDenny It seems Al's still active then...

Yeah, still active. Just on a "spy" mode, perhaps?

@geff_chang It's underhanded is what it is, he isn't even the actual 1st user android.stackexchange.com/users/1 but the 267th! I'm closer to user 1 than that, and Bryan's even closer android.stackexchange.com/users/10

6:49 PM
Hi @SangeetMenon

@ce4 Hi...

ce4
I'm not quite sure what caused your problem, but I have seen it a few times on my devices too
My guess: FS corruption

Why it only effects a few apps on the filesystem then...
all of them should get removed...

ce4
If you move apps (or have paid apps) then there's the /sdcard/.android_secure folder
it basically holds crypto-loop images of the moved (or paid for) apps
crypto is only there for security (so e.g. windows, which can access the folder cannot fiddle with it)

I have moved apps my internal sdcard (/mnt/sdcard/) and probably those were the one deleted..but not all of them

ce4
6:52 PM
My guess is: a) either you deleted the .android_secure (or windows did sth. to it) or

Android 4.2 comes without Mass Storage Mode, correct? Does anybody know why?

Knowing I have not deleted anything...

ce4
@Flow: I have a Q/A for this

but Windows might have

ce4
@SangeetMenon: And b) maybe the cryptoloop image files got corrupted by dismounting it

6:54 PM
but I am still confused why only some the apps...
and why not all of them

ce4
@SangeetMenon: The sdcard thing is a complete utter mess (it's FAT32, it needs to be unmounted locally to expose it to Windows, and so on)
Did you reboot since you lost those apps?
You could have a look at the log.

@ce4 could find it in your profile

no I didnt..

s/could/couldn't

ce4
oh
one sec

6:57 PM
@ce4 I am already running two different mess in this tablet
1. The actual micro SD card is usless to store apps...
2. This one were the apps get deleted from the internal SD card

is there a way to over come these two...

ce4
@Flow: sangeet's last post is exactly why they did that

@SangeetMenon are you sure the apps were deleted, or are the shortcuts just missing from your homescreen? that tends to happen a lot when storage is dismounted. my SGS loses the shortcuts to apps on the SD card on every reboot

ce4
@SangeetMenon: If you access the SDcard on Windows, it get's unmounted on Android and the pure block device is exposed via USB to Windows. My guess again: Not all was written, maybe you have a faulty card or there was another problem with saving all data before the unmount on Android did happen.

@ce4 Thanks for the link.

@ce4 I found the com.XXX.YYYY packages files showing in the apps manager...And now think you are right they might not have been deleted but instead Android might not have been able to load the shortcuts as the Windows might not have released the SD card after the USB storage was turned off and the menu was drawn...this I think might be what must have happened..

ce4
7:04 PM
Do you have ADB access (needs the SDK and a setting on your phone)
You could eject and then re-insert the sdcard again and see in the logs

@ce4 No....No...the apps were on the internal SD card...look back at the original question for details...
I suppose I had an option to move them back to tablet memory and might be that might make it show up on the scree....unfortunately I deleted all of them
@ce4 I am not too sure of ADB... I got Anroif SDK tool on my PC and not sure about the seetings to be done on the phone

ce4
you can also just use the app (it works with 4.0 still)

I cant run it from the apps manager...I can clear data, stop, uninstall and move to phone/tablet
@ce4 How can I see the logs for the internal SD card...

ce4
Run the logcat app?
Not sure if they're there, just look through
@SangeetMenon: That's how it looks on my device paste.ubuntu.com/1520723
Note the 'No secure containers on sdcard' message. That's probably where your device screwed up.
And search for this occurrence: "android.intent.action.MEDIA_MOUNTED"
If there are problems, you'll get log messages below this entry
@SangeetMenon ^^

7:22 PM
@ce4 I ran the app...Saved the log but how to access the logs saved....its saved under /data folder

ce4
Don't know, I don't regularly use this app. There's surely a 'share' or save button anywhere

I have saved it gave me the location as well but how to access the /data folder from my tablet
I am not sure

ce4
Well, figure it out? Or use another app, play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nolanlawson.logcat

I thinks thats gonna take me a while...
@ce4 Just a question out of the topic... Is there any way I could make my external 16 Gb microSD card useful to store and run apps without rooting the device...

ce4
Only via 'move to sdcard'. All else needs root.
For the logcat problem: I only use commandline, can't help you with these apps (they only work up until Android 4.0 and I only have 4.2 here)

7:32 PM
by the time the Nexus 4 is back in stock the Xperia Z will be out and already obsolete lol

ce4
@MatthewRead Read something completely stunning an hour ago:
Not sure if it's legit or fake. I just can't think Google would allow them to do that
But the Xperia Z is definitely worth a look.

8:14 PM
@ce4 somehow that is not actually surprising to me. selling out after only 400k units of a "flagship" device and not getting more quickly is not a good indicator for future performance
i wonder if it's more "LG is having problems" than "LG is focused on future products" though

ce4
That is indeed a good indicator of a superb flagship device. Not.
Yep

ce4
I'm not sure, that also happened with the N7 and the N10

until the N4 my impression of LG products was bad, this is making me think that again :P

ce4
Google isn't a hardware manufacturer and had not much experience with shipping and managing the customer channel
Well, let's see...
If they really cease to produce the N4, that'll not generate good press and consumer trust. Doing such a limbo...
Well, maybe they do a Nexus 4S (with LTE, who knows)

8:20 PM
i did hear that the N4 supposedly has the hardware for LTE, maybe they are waiting on software implementation to ship the next batch
as long as they don't raise the price....

ce4
Yep. It has a chip that's capable of doing it but too few antennas wired, It's possible to tune it to some frequencies, but not all afaik

ce4
8:38 PM
afk for dinner

9:33 PM
alright guys? _o/
What happened to Al Everett? his id user1 is appearing everywhere! did he bow out of the moderator team?

9:48 PM
Confirm the last part. I read here he opted out, "too much real life" keeping him busy.

Hiya @Izzy _o/ :D

\0_ Hiya @t0mm13b :D
How you like my addition to the sim-lock -- the suggestion to manufacturers?
They do that -- and thieves always can be told by using a device with gloves on XD
Which already looks weird as such -- but gets obvious with a touchy smart-phone LOL

lol
I say, good luck to tapping on screen with gloves...
lol

Exactly. But without: Zapp! XD
Add real high-capacity batteries then as well, for more fun watching the thief :D

10:05 PM
lol
lmao
I can picture it, thief smiling, "Yippee, oooh, nice smartphone...wait wut...." bzzzztttt.... hairs standing up... as if tasered!

10:37 PM
ROFL "shocking experience", LOLMAO!

xD

Any idea how far Ryan got with his DroidExplorer's Linux branch? Looking for a nice ADB GUI...

no idea :)

Got my new tabby a few days ago (Cat Stargate II). Nice piece, will return it.

oh :)
nice

10:41 PM
Got some HW probs with it (screen has a "green line" when cold. Leaving it turned-on for a while makes it disappear. But additionally, battery emptied in ~8h for 50% without using the device, reason: "cell standby" -- hell, the thingy has not even a SIM slot -- though you can add a dongle)
Complained, asked they should return me a rooted device XD

lol

Explained why I need it -- and what I offer in return. Looks like they agree :D

got root w00t!

First switch the broken device, then check for a "developers device". Am very curious...
Huh? You got root? What, where, how?

xD

10:43 PM
I tried to root the Cat right away on the second day. No success yet.

lol, no I mean, when you asked for them to return the rooted tabby....
so no joy in rooting it?
tough nut to crack?

Ah, see. -- let's say: no success so far in rooting it myself. So the better if I get it that way from the manufacturer.

what manufacturer is it?

Android 4.1.1. Tried the generic one from bin4ry (XDA), didn't work.
Cat Sound (www.cat-sound.com)

hmmm....bootloader unlocked?

10:46 PM
Nice looking piece, backside alu (elegant!), 1.2GHz dual-core, 8G internal, 2 cams (2MPx on the back, 0.3 on the front) -- and just 135 Euro incl. shipping.

was thinking, if it is, could flash another kernel with an insecure ramdisk to make rooting easier

Didn't check. Too complicated XD
With the wrong kernel, that could brick the device (won't even get to recovery then)
So too risky.
But apart from the two probs I encountered, it's a nice piece. So I look forward to what we can agree on next week.

right... am surprised
cat-sound are violating gpl
no kernel source published for download anywhere
but then again, typical :D

Ah: I just tried QtADB. Funny: it shows just one single user app (cannot read /data/app without root, it seems) -- but shows all system apps XD
They just need to say "we hand it over on request", so GPL is kept.
You needn't hold it for download AFAIK.
Nice thing also: You don't get forced to anything. Boot it up, and there you go (no wizzard, no Blur/Sence/Wiz). Create a Google account if you want.
Bloatware? Just a few: G+, Fakebook, Twitter.
But nice stuff came pre-installed: ES FileExplorer, 2 ebook readers (Aldiko + FBReader). Ah, and the GApps of course.
Hm, any way how I can start a pre-installed app if it does not show up in the app drawer? Like e.g. the Phone app (to enter some "magic codes")?

hmmm, adb shell am start -n ...some_package_name/.some_activity?
replace some_package_name with com.foo.app
replace .some_activity with perhaps .main
or send an intent?

11:01 PM
If I knew the one bringing up the default phone app...
(com.android.telephony or what it was)

com.android.dialler iirc
checking
my bad
com.android.phone

Yeah, right, that one :)
Hey, that's funny: I just tell you about my "green line on the screen", and there that Q pops up...

ce4
@Izzy: Don't buy that cat stuff (it's ridiculous, the same el-cheapo kit as was sold by Weltbild & Hugendubel)
Probably a successor though, but when I had a look at it: Crap (not Cat)
as for the root: What did you try?
(i.e. by exloits by name)

11:18 PM
Yeah, I noted that already. Looks like they have a lot of returns. But nevertheless, I already bought it. And they seem quite cooperative. Hell, it's 135 paid, take away 19% VAT and 30% TAX and you know what I really paid. Nothing to be worried about.
What I tried is bin4ry's package from XDA. Wait, I check if I find that URL...
Uses a gap in adb restore, restoring a fake-backup with 99 large files (for the restore, adb switches to root mode -- and there's a timing gap with JB).
Unfortunately, the kitten seems to have that gap filled.

ce4
that's the adb restore bug. yeah

what about the adb remount bug?

ce4
It's basically a symlink attack against /data/local.prop, right

yes

which seems not to exist on the Cat, or it would have worked. Exactly.
What is that adb remount bug?

ce4
11:21 PM
bin4ry is auch aus D, gelle.
adb-remount = bin4ry's exploit

Oh. Wusste ich nicht :)

DoomLord exploited that for the 2011 line of Sony xperia range after the official update to ics

ce4
Have you already returned it?

nope. adb-restore = bin4ry's exploit, afaik.

might be worth trying, nothing to lose there

11:23 PM
I just run the steps from above mentioned XDA source. Did not find anything else which seemed to match.

ce4
you can try another infamous symlink bug

All I see is names -- I need the instructions :)
I've got ADB running here, if it matters.

ce4
hold a sec

Yepp, will do :)
1001, 1002... Yupp? XD

:D
1500....1501....

ce4
11:25 PM
lol

9999....
overflow

ce4
stopit

:D

ce4
:-)
there should be a init.rc somewhere

Nah. I was just reading a book from Drake, where the crew used those numbers to count their steps...
Yeah, directly in root AFAIR -- mom...
Yupp.
/init.rc

ce4
11:26 PM
if there's an chmod /data/local/tmp 0771...
that directory is world r/w, you can replace it with a symlink to let's say /dev/block/xxx

Nope. Only mkdir for that.
without tmp

ce4
also fixed, dadada

ah, no, with tmp:
mkdir /data/local/tmp 0771 shell shell
so it has the chmod included.

ce4
Asus had a nasty bug that did a chmod (good to exploit)

here it seems to be atomary.

ce4
11:29 PM
On many of their products... (flow needed that bug lately)

mkdir & chmod in one.

ce4
not sure about that 'mkdir', seems to be special

Funny, but they use chmod in other places in init.rc:

ce4
well, nevermind

chmod 0771 /data/resource-cache

ce4
11:30 PM
hrmm????!!!!!!!!einself
group permissions?

It's not Skype, or it would have been 0777 XD

ce4
lol

Does that help any?

ce4
no idea

OK, what about that adb-remount
??

ce4
11:32 PM
nope, system:system on mine

don't get that skype joke?

Install Skype and look in /data/data/com.skype.*

ce4
skype had a severe 'my data-directory is best globally readible' bug once

All directories are 0777, files 0666.

ymmmv

11:33 PM
Which is why I immediately kicked it from my devices.

ce4
it's not anymore, isn't it?

I did a su
from the terminal but not from adb shell
/me facepalms

ce4
lol

@ce4 I didn't re-check recently.

ce4
yeah, it could be used to steal accounts, else

11:34 PM
But as you must actively be stupid for that...
I mean, defaults are more restrictive -- so they must actively have changed it wo world-rw.
I don't trust those guys anymore...

ce4
zergRush is Gingerbread only... too old

Exactly. And: "Windows only" it says right in the beginning. My windows have glass only...

ce4
Nope, it's any OS

hmmm

ce4
11:37 PM
You can look at the stupid batch file and do all steps by hand (very probably)

that was used successfully to root ICS
:-\

ce4
Most exploits are FOSS, lol

lol

ce4
well, at least open

google this - DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su.zip
download that and unzip it and run the batch file and try it
that one ^^^ adb emulator vulnerability or it could be remount (not 100% sure)
but that was the one I used successfully... :)
lol @ the commit message
Some changes to work on ZTE Warp, hope it won't break for other phone…
lol ^

11:40 PM
It says ICS -- so I can use it for JB without problems?

ce4
That's the symlink trick from above: "adb shell ln -s /data /data/local/tmp"
don't bother, Izzy
too old
Something else, Izzy: Why don't you just buy a Nexus 7? It's moderately pricier, but way better

Because it has no SDCard.

ce4
Nah, really?

I don't buy devices w/o removable storage.

surely, that would work, like what are the major differences between ICS and JB?
cannot fathom exactly, not exactly a big leap either?

11:43 PM
If the device won't come up, I always can just take out the card. All my data is backup'd there, even when I had no net.

apart from multi-user a/c's! lol

ce4
Ah, therefore. I got used to it. I have a Nook COlor and a S2, both equipped with 32GB sdcard, which I don't use

I hate it that /mnt/sdcard now points to internal storage. Fools up everything. And I cannot even symlink, as both are VFAT...

ce4
@Izzy: from a security POV, a no-sdcard makes sense. Plus: A single partition is also better
It's better in the long run, really.

Btw: Taht DoomLord stuff looks very close to what bin4ry did. It will fail at the symlink part on my device.

ce4
11:45 PM
@Izzy: You could do a 'mount -bind existing-folder /new/folder'

Ah, that makes sense to me. If I can take out the entire storage, I don't need no backups...XD

ce4
lol

Yepp, thought of that -- and then forgot again. Let me try... wait: Does that work w/o root?

ce4
LOL. no

That mount, I mean?

ce4
11:46 PM
Nope

See, now I know why I forgot about... :(

ce4
Something different: Have you tried to modify their firmware update?

Guess I simply return that tab for exchange, and wait for the other rooted one they'll go to send me.

ce4
Some of those el-cheapo devices don't check signatures

Hm? What firmware update? There is none (at least not for download).

ce4
11:48 PM
ah

Amazon wrote: ships with 4.0.4, and has an update to 4.1.1 -- but it came straight with 4.1.1

ce4
Why not reinstall a modded one?

But if they don't check sigs -- wouldn't some update.zip succeed then?
Because that requires me to have one? There is none for download.

ce4
ah

So if I don't have an original, I cannot modify it...

ce4
11:50 PM
yep. I'd return it, buy an Asus or a Nexus 7

But if I had some update.zip containing su, superuser.apk, busybox, etc., shouldn't that do?

ce4
maybe, yep

I just don't know how to create such an update.zip

ce4
load another from their site?

Their recovery offers even update via adb...
What other? For another device? That could screw up.
Different hardware.

ce4
11:53 PM
yep, better not try it.
how does it do that? Via adb?
sideload?
(adb sideload image.zip)

shame!
even bootloader is locked right?
if it wasn't it would be easy to modify ramdisk by ripping out boot
and make adb shell insecure

How can I tell?

there should be a service code
hummm
#*#service#*# ?
replace service with the numeric equivalent on dialer pad

Btw, for another LOL: The device's serial is... dumm--dumm--tadaaa: 0123456789ABCDEF

Oo
epic ...
fail

11:57 PM
Ah, @t0mm13b there we are again. How to call up the dialer?

/me facepalms....
lol

/me headbangs
At least it's hex...
(German joke: it's witch-crafted XD)

ce4
Silly question: adb shell doesn't give you root already?

(hex = witch (translated))

ce4
I once had a cheap tab that did that

11:59 PM
If that were so, I could see what's in /data/data -- and not get a "permission denied". Nope, tried that.

adb shell am start -n com.android.phone/.InCallScreen
whoops

ce4
kk
