@izzy: I did adb backup of apps only on Kitkat )single backup of all)- Restoring to Marshamllow doesn't seem to work. Its 1 GB in size and for over half an hour nothing happened. Disconnected and am trying again. Your answer seems to indicate it should be possible...any thoughts pls?

@beeshyams I'd never restore a full ADB backup to a different ROM, though that might work. That's why I always backup things separately, so I can take my pick on restore. There are possibilities for partial restore (e.g. TiBu claims to support that), but I've never played with those.

In your case, it's even a jump of 2 major versions (Kitkat -> MM). I'd be concerned that some system stuff might cause issues there, and rather stick to the "user part".

@izzy: Thanks- it was not full as in all- full as in user apps only but that doesnt seem to work- only option is to install apps individually and in the process lose some data

TiBu is ruled out as it is a new phone and I don't intend to root if i can help

@beeshyams Is the device rooted? As I wrote, there are a few tools to do a partial restore. We've even got some posts on that.
