From the Unicode Standard: "While an encoded character is formally defined in terms of the mapping between an abstract character and a code point, informally it can be thought of as an abstract character taken together with its assigned code point." What are they driving towards; what's the difference between the two (formal and informal) explanations they provided?
The definition they're referring to is literally: "Encoded character: An association (or mapping) between an abstract character and a code point."

Definition of X: "The basic unit of encoding for the Unicode character encoding." – does this sentence tell you that X is to be encoded, or has been encoded?
By the latter I mean: is it the representation obtained by encoding?
