The picture is pulled from Gravatar for Area 51
it is not like other sites on the SE network where you can upload one
so it's pulling whatever Gravatar is associated with your Area 51 e-mail

JohnBThis might be status-bydesign. Your avatar for the A51 Site Staging zone is determined by the Gravatar attached to the e-mail address in your profile. However, that is not the case for the A51 Discussion Zone, where the avatar setting mechanism matches the rest of the SE network sites.

yes, create a Gravatar account
use the same e-mail that you have set on Area 51
it's clunky, but that is the way of Area 51 :)

yes, they are disjointed
Area 51 is hacked together for what it does rather than being purpose built. Some parts of it are still running on ancient Stack Exchange software. This fracture is the result of that
