Wow, my question is at -6 votes just because was busy and didn't get time to change it....

@mınxomaτ I ran time git status on git bash, then the same thing on wls. The first one returned in 2.9s, and the second in 17.9 seconds

That sounds like disk access is the issue.

any idea how to debug what's happening?

Was there any error?

Maybe the path names are longer in WLS :P

4:19 PM
no errors
I am on /mnt though

That doesn't make a difference.
You could try to run the same in flinux. That would tell you if the issue is the kernel or the disk access.

I think I'll try downloading the repo to /home and see if its faster

"BashOnWindows" sounds like a forum for dissing Windows

Keep a look on the CPU time used by "Antimalware service executable"

ooh, that's a good idea
hmmm, I disabled windows defender, and it didn't change anything

4:27 PM
@feersum All we need is a domain name...
And a Sandbox for posts

yeah, the only thing that changes is that the Git process uses a bunch of CPU
thank you. I'm aware
hmmm, doing a git status on my /home directory didn't make a difference

@NathanMerrill Please run dd bs=1M count=512 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync

512+0 records in
512+0 records out
536870912 bytes (537 MB) copied, 2.96565 s, 181 MB/s

For me at least, it gives 400MB/s, about HDD speed
Do you have an SSD or HDD?

512+0 records in
512+0 records out
536870912 bytes (537 MB) copied, 1.96343 s, 273 MB/s
SSD
the above is git bash
so its slightly faster on git bash

4:35 PM
There's something wrong with multiple things.

Can you share the git repo in question?

nope, its private
though, I believe it happens on any git repo
let me check

Just ran that on my dev copy of Mono's source code on alwsl and another bare metal arch machine. It's maybe a few seconds, for nowhere near what you got.

hmmm...is there a large repo I could checkout?
all of my other repos are pretty small

4:38 PM
Mono
(github.com/mono/mono)
Why do you try so hard to be annoying.

^
Anyways

Ignoring annoying users solves many problems

@Mast lol, that message about stars you said the other day has a lot.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yea, something funny happened there. Like you guys needed to prove a point.

This incomplete list is not intended to be exhaustive. This list corrects erroneous beliefs that are currently widely held about notable topics. Each misconception and the corresponding facts have been discussed in published literature. Note that each entry is formatted as a correction; the misconceptions themselves are implied rather than stated. == Arts and culture == === Food and cooking === Searing meat may cause it to lose moisture in comparison to an equivalent amount of cooking without searing. Lol its always hilarious to take a look at chat after a while

And see the past conflicts

I have to say, there seem to be a lot of new people to PPCG/chat recently.
That's not bad though, just interesting.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Look at my question again now.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to save.

The third misconception...everyone i know believes...

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Okay, I saved it now.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Is the question more clear now?

5:16 PM
@mınxomaτ ok, finally got mono downloaded and everything. git status on wsl takes 39.1s, and on git bash it takes 2.6s
its definitely independent of the repo

I still can't reproduce this. Will do some testing later.

the other test you had me run was writing large amount of data. could it be related to accessing files ?
aka, it takes a long time to resolve a path

Was somebody (maybe @mınxomaτ?) trying to make a chat client for SE chat?

I think quill was at one point

Nope. AFAIK that was Quill

5:19 PM
Ninja. :)

he made one for the terminal, but it's still incomplete iirc

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ About the same I'd say, actually. It's just that one particular user is being particularly noteworthy (and not in a good way), so you're just really aware of it.

oh, is it possible I have different configs set between the two gits?

@ColdGolf I still don't understand the input format. Also the challenge seems to be made out of lots of sub-challenges. I personally wouldn't be interested in answering it even if you made the wording better

Oh BTW @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Did you ever fix the V answer?

5:26 PM
nope.
i tried though
@El'endiaStarman I think a lot of the new users have entered chat also, even before the particular user. Like rohan and tux.
@DJMcMayhem pls halp vim no like me

So basically, if there's only one element, it's the min and the max so you just need to duplicate it before deleting all the lines in the middle
So just yank a line and paste it.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ could you not call them 'that particular user', it makes it feel like an us vs them situation and I'd rather not have this chat room degrade into something like the rest of the internet

okay, sorry
@DJMcMayhem okay, i'll work on that in a moment.
can't right now

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Tux is not quite so new anymore. Rohan is, but we do normally get new users in chat on a fairly regular basis.

okay, i guess i never noticed

5:38 PM
And Cat ;_;

you aren't new
i've seen you for like a month or so

Although I'm a few months old

@El'endiaStarman the number of new users I think has increased

@Quill ... SE chat terminal should probably have a /showstarred message or something, instead of randomly giving me 4 highly starred messages. :P

oooh, this actually sounds like a query we could make over chat

5:40 PM
I can't take this seriously

Q: How did I lose 5 reputation on an answer?

cat On this answer, it says I lost 5 reputation, and I'm really puzzled about what chain of events could have caused this. I don't care about the lost rep, I'm just curious to understand as I've never seen this before. Upvotes on answers are +10 reputation. Removal of an upvote on an answer woul...

@RohanJhunjhunwala We like the language.

@NathanMerrill I was thinking that too.

@mınxomaτ what's the alternative to /dev/sda on wsl?
I'm trying to run a hdparam test

@NathanMerrill wsl?
Perhaps it's already mounted.

er, wls
windows linux subsystem

Good old QWOP

Almost sent a very unfortunate typo. Meant to say "Just to clarify what you are thinking" almost sent "Just to clarify that you are thinking"
It's a one letter difference that drastically changes the tone and message, lol

Q: Make your country proud!

DJMcMayhemYou are from the tiny country of Que-Wopistan. The Que-Wopistonion's are a proud people, and every Que-Wopistonian dreams of making their country proud by representing their country in the Olympics. You have been given the incredible honor of competing in the 100-meter-dash. You are the nations...

6:13 PM
@NathanMerrill No clue what that is. But if you're reaching for your harddisk, you may need to specify which sda you want. I got 8.

My worst challenge ever posted, haha

It counts every partition separately.

its running linux on my windows machine :)

@DJMcMayhem Nah, I'm disappointed that more people didn't answer
It was a great idea

aka, when I do ls /dev, I don't have anything that starts with sda

6:16 PM
@βετѧΛєҫαγ well there's only one answer, so it probably wouldn't be too hard to outgolf. :P

you wouldnt find it there.. you could try within fdisk
or issue df -h

Ok, I think its HD seeks that are the cause. I ran bonnie++, and I'm getting 356.9 random seeks per second
and it reported that it used 453% of my cpu
which is bizarre, but oh well :)

what's so great about wls ?? I have been running linux commands on windows for over a decade
thanks Cygwin

I can't stand cygwin. its slow and clunky
I've been using git bash though, its working great

yeah i like using git on bash
wls i guess supplies a bash shell?
or are you using "git bash" for windows, instead of using git on bash provided by wls/cygwin ?

6:21 PM
I currently use "git bash" for windows, but I'm trying to use git on bash provided by wls

yeah drop git bash if there are alternatives

oh, I like it quite a bit. What problems do you have with it?

I have only tried to use it once but it was so overly confusing in comparison to just regular ol' git
i think i stuck with the eclipse git addon for my needs on that windows machine

@DJMcMayhem You mean "outchallenge"?

git is fun and games until you have to get pull requests approved.

6:25 PM
@trichoplax fair

@RohanJhunjhunwala We don't have that many BF askers though, nor do we have many BF reviewers
@RohanJhunjhunwala Hey! That's my posts!

@mınxomaτ When I was gone you tagged me?

@SimonForsberg did you get pinged herE?

No, that's my fault.

Just now, I almost wrote an if conditional that had x > y and y < x as conditionals...

well, welcome!

@DJMcMayhem Doesn't have the same ring to it though...

I wonder if there'll be sandbox for ppcg answers, not just questions

@El'endiaStarman if(not x==y)

@NathanMerrill I even started working on a Brainfuck IDE that is meant to detect some issues while working with BF

6:29 PM
@SimonForsberg I think I saw a community ad for that

@SimonForsberg pls write your IDE in Pyth

@El'endiaStarman 10/10

@NathanMerrill Yup. It could also use some more contributors.

6:29 PM
@muddyfish how

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I pressed some buttons?

@Mast No no, as distinct conditions.

@ColdGolf Most of the code I write is Java or Groovy and I already have some algorithms for detecting issues with BF code written in Java/Groovy. Why should I use Python?

@muddyfish Woah. somebdy won at QWOP.
@SimonForsberg Cuz pyth isn't python?

6:31 PM
@ColdGolf it's 100m to win

@ColdGolf then what is Pyth?

@muddyfish :D
28m isn't bad.
It's impossible.

@SimonForsberg Pyth is a golfing language based on python.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Technically, that's how it started out, not how it currently is.

Nothing's better than to write a golfing IDE in a golfing language.

6:32 PM
Oh bloody hell.... of course, what else would I expect from PPCG people? -.-

@SimonForsberg we need more Java developers here. I always get a bunch of hate here when I try to use Java here :)

@NathanMerrill Java and golfing don't mix.

@NathanMerrill I imagine Java is way too verbose for .

Well, Java is not really very golf-ish. Groovy could possibly work though.

6:33 PM
yeah, well, is one tag

@El'endiaStarman In python you could golf that down to x > y < x ;)

we have like 5 or so other scoring tags
that Java is perfectly fine at

@SimonForsberg what an euphemism

@El'endiaStarman true

@NathanMerrill That's great.

6:33 PM
Yeah, I don't really get the hate for Java

@NathanMerrill So kick ass with those. Prove them wrong.

right, but this chatroom still hates Java :)

If so, your chatroom tags should indicate that.

oooh, we definitely need chatroom tags

6:35 PM
oooh, still ? I'll come back later

So, anyway, if anyone writes some somewhat BF code, let me know. Until then, see you around. I gotta get back to coding Java.

@SimonForsberg Pyth.
Java can't golf.
Unless that's not what you're using it for..
In which case, Java rocks!

oooh, pretty

@Mast LOL

6:36 PM
Most of our rooms have tags.

Not 19th byte..
No tags I can see.

@ColdGolf Yeah, we needed more room for the starboard.

TIL you can bookmark conversations within a chatroom

6:42 PM
@NathanMerrill Java is perfectly good for competing against other Java competitors in too

Or against C#

I actually disagree with that. As far as golfing goes, there really aren't that many "hacks" you can do to make a program shorter

^ This is pretty much why I don't golf in Java and instead golf in C :P

aka, you make your class short, remove whitespace, and...
?

Depends if you want a language where the golfing is about incremental tricks, or one where it's just about getting the right algorithm

6:46 PM
@NathanMerrill Make a 0-byte language?
And a wiki page on esolangs.org

MetaGolfScript

You should read Meta. It's great...

i told that to @ColdGolf

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Didn't you get stars too??

@trichoplax So did you.
