@AlexA. since you're in Washington, can you tell me something?

12:12 AM
Sure

does mt. Rainer and mt. St. Helens actually exist?

Yes
Mount Rainier (pronounced: /reɪˈnɪər/), Mount Tacoma, or Mount Tahoma is the highest mountain of the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, and the highest mountain in the state of Washington. It is a large active stratovolcano located 54 miles (87 km) south-southeast of Seattle. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m). Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt...
Mount St. Helens or Louwala-Clough (known as Lawetlat'la to the indigenous Cowlitz people, and Loowit to the Klickitat) is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is 96 miles (154 km) south of Seattle, Washington, and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Portland, Oregon. Mount St. Helens takes its English name from the British diplomat Lord St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late 18th century. The volcano is located in the Cascade Range and is part of the Cascade Volcanic...

every time I've been over there, the locals claim its just behind these clouds that just so happened to roll in the day before.
"come back next month, it'll be clear then!"

They're not often visible unless it's a very clear day.
Mt. Rainier you can see from a distance; for example I was able to see it occasionally when I lived in Seattle. That's not the case with Mt. St. Helens AFAIK.
I think you have to be significantly closer to it to see it.

no, pretty sure I need to make a painful to look at website "exposing" this truth

12:15 AM
Haha
Better yet, patent the idea that they don't exist and try to sell your patent at auction.

oh right, the reason I showed up here in the first place
@trichoplax for your image rearranger (codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/35236/34315), I had passed it two images, one to rearrange and one for the key. The images were not the same size or area. I noticed that it does resize the key image to match the input image though. It had succeeded for some images but it has failed more often than not.

You people are fast.

> asked 9 mins ago
not really

Three close votes in 8 minutes on a low-traffic site is pretty fast to me. :P

1:48 AM
Does Puzzling get more traffic than we do?

Yeah, definitely

Looking at the two sites... I'm not so sure.

IIRC we were told once that Puzzling is actually pretty close to the requirements for graduation

glares at Puzzling
Well weren't we told that back in the code trolling days or am I imagining that?

Graduation was waaay different back then anyway.
(the whole concept of beta and graduated sites is slowly being revamped)

1:56 AM
Is there a list somewhere of the most recently graduated sites and when they did?
(or just a list of when their ui got updated)

Yes. (I have no idea where it is, but I know it exists somewhere because I've seen it before)

Somewhere on Anime Meta? I think

@NormalHuman or someone else from the Tavern could probably tell you.

What?
Who is Normal Human?

that one guy who always changes his username. Pretty sure it's Normal Human right now, though :P

lol, he's @MiceElf now

That is lol
What does "last seen" actually correspond to?
Most recent login? Activity?

It seems that being pinged with an open chat tab counts, as no one has more than one minute elapsed in here.

I mean on the site. I actually didn't realize we had "seen" in chat.

@BrianTompsett-汤莱恩 Hello stranger who is always in this room!

2:39 AM
I actually saw him post an answer on PPCG once.

I can recognize everyone in the room right now except Brian

I was like, "Hey, I recognize that guy from chat!"
I recognize Brian because he's always in here.
Biding his time. Waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

What does 汤莱恩 mean?

translate: 汤莱恩
(from zh-CHS) Tang Laien
That, I guess ^

Try translating the output again.

2:42 AM
Actually that's what it's supposed to be
> Took me two years of work with a Chinese native speaker to get the right name in sound and in characters. "Tang" in close in pronunciation to the first Syllable of my family name. "Tom". "laien" sounds like "Brian" with a chinese accept. It also translates into a name on google translate, and the characters are the same as used by Cho EnLai a famous chinese leader, and hence would be auspicious
Quoth the Brian
Apparently he's also a celebrity:
> I was the first timelord and created the tardis.
And a professor.
Apparently the title "Eur Ing" comes from European Engineer.
Also I'm incredibly bored.

I just had an idea for a CnR:
Cops post a language, the byte count of an undisclosed program in that language, and the programs output.
Robbers must produce the same output in the same language, with an equal or inferior byte count.

Oooh
You should put that puppy in the sandbox.

Oh, and congratulations to @me for hitting 100k rep network wide!

Outer space?

@Dennis Sounds interesting. I can imagine the top answer already though: You being really mean in CJam, with the output being some long string of numbers.

You would need to put some rather strong restrictions on what output can be and what functions can be used.

3:05 AM
Hahaha

@Sp3000 Haha. I have yet to participate in a challenge of my own (not counting the prime catalog, which had no winner). I wouldn't post a competitive answer to my own CnR.
I'm pretty close to posting an answer to my finite groups challenge though.
@PhiNotPi Yeah, hash functions and PRNGs could ruin this pretty quickly.

@NewSandboxedPosts @BetaDecay .....are SEDE answers allowed? :P

@El'endiaStarman I would say yes but it seems like it would be an easy winner

Not necessarily...
SQL statements are fairly verbose.
On the other hand, if the libraries needed in most languages for scraping a web page are included, then yeah, SEDE would probably win.

6:13 AM
Mm. I wonder if SEDE has been used before for challenges

@BetaDecay This is (probably) the only mention on the whole site.

I was just looking through that

All mentions on the Meta site are using the SEDE for informative or investigative purposes, not in challenges.

Does it count as a language?

hmm
Well, the language is SQL and you could kinda consider the SEDE to be the interpreter.
Which would make it distinct, I think. SQL-SEDE, 80 bytes

Well, there's only one way to find out if it's a valid language ;)

Q: The Cake Cutting Contest

Hmm flip-rev's actually pretty messy :P
May I ask what 511 maps to?

@Sp3000 to 511

Hm...

@Calvin'sHobbies: Hello (Sorry for delay; timezone differences)

@BrianTompsett-汤莱恩 No problem :P

8:17 AM
I left it logged in in a tab that was on a minimised browser and just left it there! :-)

8:42 AM
@Calvin'sHobbies x^(x>>1)?

I get a slightly different plot for that, but it also looks pretty nice :)

i think i meant x^(x<<1)

Ditto - it doesn't quite match the two points I asked about (511, 511) and (682, 682)

maybe x|(x<<1)
the graph seems to hit the ceiling of each block a bunch
hmm
682 is '0b1010101010'

^^ x|(x<<1)

8:48 AM
that's a nice plot

They all look pretty nice :) Still trying to figure out how to get from 512 to what looks like 1024 or so though :/

perhaps (x>>1)|(x<<1)?
wait, nevermind, that's not consistent with the data points

Looks pretty similar to the plot above
Just for fun: x&(x<<1)

what are you using to plot these, by the way?

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
plt.plot(map(f,range(1000)))
plt.show()

8:53 AM
i take it i'd need matlab installed?

No, just the Python library actually
I think it's called that because it's based off Matlab's plotting

does it seems to be true that f(x)|x==f(x)?
i.e. that f never any bit

Considering how f(x) seems to be >= x, probably...

maybe something like take x, cycle the bits by 2, then or the result to x?

Some numbers are a bit too low, like 640 (0b1010000000 | 0b0010100000 = 672)

9:07 AM
i see, we need pretty much every number to be raised

@TheNumberOne I didn't want to play this game: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/59731/14215

@Dennis Feel free to post it if you want

@TheNumberOne I was just going to stay out of it. I don't like games where the only real strategy is to hope someone else lets you win.

@Sp3000 not entirely sure... maybe 2-tag systems or something... in any case, I'd represent bits by a 2x1 block's orientation. or maybe 3x1 to make wirecrossing easier if necessary.

I guess a good start might just be to figure out logic gates

2:10 PM
hm, possibly. those also depend on the representation of bits though
(block/no block, vs different block types, vs different block layouts, vs different block orientations)
come to think of, I don't think you can distinguish block types, so that one is out

I wonder if I can write a bot to purposely mess up the cake-cutting contest.

@Sp3000 I've hit the rep cap anyway. If nobody else beats me to it, I'll post it after midnight. It's all yours if you want it.

It's probably pretty easy, actually... bid the maximum up until the very last round when it's down to 2 players, then bid 0 and let the other guy win.

@PhiNotPi Sure. Write one that bids the whole cake until only two bots are remaining, then tanks the last round, bidding zero/one. The rest goes to the greedy bot who lasted that long.
>_<

Does anyone know what fractal PeterTaylor's avatar is?

Newtonian fractal
The Newton fractal is a boundary set in the complex plane which is characterized by Newton's method applied to a fixed polynomial . It is the Julia set of the meromorphic function which is given by Newton's method. When there are no attractive cycles (of order greater than 1), it divides the complex plane into regions , each of which is associated with a root of the polynomial, . In this way the Newton fractal is similar to the Mandelbrot set, and like other fractals it exhibits an intricate appearance arising from a simple description. It is relevant to numerical analysis because it shows that...

My profile pic should soon change to x^6-9x^3+8, carefully designed by choosing the roots and then using Wolfram Alpha to simplify the polynomial. Ok, I cheated by swapping the hues around afterwards in the GIMP. — Peter Taylor May 11 '11 at 22:55

we should just make a fractal-drawing challenge then
input polynomial, output fractal

As a commemoration of his life?

3:58 PM
Isn't that pretty much what that challenge is?

"This means, that you get a polynomial as the input and have to print out the corresponding fractal as an image in a format of your choice as the output."
I'm no scientist, but that seems pretty close!

are we talking about different challenges?

I'm no scientist, but I should begin starting all my sentences with "I'm no scientist, but..."

Because I don't know where you're getting that quote from.

@PhiNotPi I was talking about the one Peter's linked comment came from.

4:02 PM
okay
I thought that was just a chat response

I'm no scientist, but that makes sense.

Maybe we should make a Peter-themed popcon.

@Geobits Perfect.. perfect... er I mean hmm...

@PhiNotPi I accidentally read this as make a Peter-themed popcorn.
Maybe we should do that. I've got his body errr I mean the essence of his ghost, and we could mix it in with some olive oil and pour it over some popcorn.

I'm no ghostbuster, but I'm not sure ghost plasma mixes well with oil.

Just gotta chop the body up enough.. I mean mix it real good.
OK I think I've thought of a Peter related challenge.

I'm no slang expert, but you might want to rethink the way that's phrased.

So, since Peter's murderer clearly isn't me or anything, we're gonna try to catch Peter's murderer. And I've thought of a way to incorporate code golf into it.

I'm no detective, but I think I've already cracked the case.

4:26 PM
@BetaDecay I doubt your challenge is fit for the main site, so I solved it in the sandbox. Was fun. :P

I want to make a "Create an OS" challenge.

@minxomat Oh, okay haha.

but... I can't even do that myself

That would be pretty boring.
If you go strictly for bytes you'd end up with a lot of HelloWorld-bootloaders. If the task is more complex, it would be like any other task plus the bootloader payload (which in that case doesn't ass much to the challenge).

That's easy enough.
Oh wait the PS Vita...

PSP1004 is the only PSP worth buying. (For playing ISOs anyway): :P

Actually that's pretty hard. PSP was cracked really easily and pirating went through the roof, so they made it extra difficult with the PS Vita.

Yea... PSN has a stunning lack of "classic" games available for handheld.
