Are there variables in Pyth?
AFAICT, to assign T with "A", you can write =T"A", but you can't assign a...

1:53 AM
@ThomasRoss Only some letters can be used as variables (see docs)
Most of them are special for certain situations, eg N when using V, and also J/K have their own auto-assign

1 hour later…
3:04 AM
Wow, Python 1's so old it doesn't even have +=
Can't get earlier versions to work on my computer though :/

Q: We need to do more to welcome women participants

CarpetPythonI am a little puzzled by the apparent (user idents are gender opaque) lack of women participants in this site. Are there women participants? Do women feel excluded by the culture of this site? Are there perhaps women who participate but feel uncomfortable about identifying their gender? Our user ...

3:52 AM
@PhiNotPi Write the interpreter in java and compile to javascript using GWT
or you could take the easier way and just run it on the server (then you have to concern about resource usage)
@MartinBüttner Ok, but I think string comparison is more often useful, makes more sense and it saves just as many bytes

3 hours later…
6:40 AM
@aditsu that's really inconsistent though because [3]3= doesn't coerce the 3 to an array either.

7:12 AM
@PhiNotPi gnibbler un-CW'd it

4 hours later…
10:57 AM
hi all
@PeterTaylor your counting hankelable matrices answer is very impressive
@orlp hi

11:12 AM
It looks correct, but is of course not a poly-time algorithm.

The problem seems np-complete to me, but I'm not sure if it really is

12:06 PM
@rcrmn I am intrigued too
@PeterTaylor Thanks.
Maybe I should repost it to cstheory... I don't know

In one of the questions related to the challenge I found a reference of something similar being np-complete, but I can't find it again

@rcrmn ah... interesting
@rcrmn let me know if you do find it again!

@rcrmn, are you sure it wasn't the one in the comments on that question itself?

12:30 PM
I did look at that but I didn't see what would apply
but I may well have not understood something

@Calvin'sHobbies Hodor!
was that inspired by the new Hodor esolang?

@PeterTaylor I believe it was in a math.se question, but I'm not sure

@rcrmn not the one I pasted just now?

I don't think so... I was looking for ways to "compress" the matrices, and I found that
sorry

no problem
the matrices can of course be represented in 2n-1 bits each

12:36 PM
@MartinBüttner Kinda. And GOT season 5 just started and all.

I think I should try doing this in Hodor...

@Lembik Before scrambling they can, but not after

@rcrmn true

@MartinBüttner I figured someone would try. I'm waiting for the popular comment that suggests it and the even more popular answer that does it.

I'm on it

12:42 PM
It would give some more sensationalism to what is really a rather bland ASCII encoding :P

I'll just make a normal answer but encode my whole post in Hodor

but then no one can run you code :P

perhaps the challenge should include a decoder
so people can test their results
but maybe that's overkill

I thought about it but the encodings not all that complex. All the character sentences are right there.
@MartinBüttner Not if you dehodorized then rehodorized

1:05 PM
This place is going to need dehodorant before long.

HODOR!

Hodor hodor hodor, hodor hodor.

FML Calvin is miles ahead of me
Give me a break I just woke up

grrr, I can't seem to install hodor

> 'odor by Hodor - Unspeakably elegant.

1:11 PM
How do you get the bar on the left?

> and a space

Hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor, hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor hodor?
2

That is the weirdest character
@Calvin'sHobbies I know. You'll get your next gold badge soon enough, don't worry.

1:14 PM
Hodor no golder

i actually like the new user profile page

yeah, got Hodor to work after reinstalling node
@Calvin'sHobbies are you sure your AEE example is correct? Shouldn't A and E have the same punctuation?

@MartinBüttner Oops, yes, it should be CEE

I never thought we'd be correcting Hodor's grammar in chat. Nice.

@MartinBüttner But when I try CEE or AEE with your JS it starts H.

1:28 PM
yeah, I just noticed... I'm already fixing it

You managed to hodor worngly ?

you managed to english wrongly

english it hard

@Calvin'sHobbies fixed

Muahaha I found a niche at work. Every Sprint we create a ton of work items in Team Foundation Server (kinda like GitHub) and there is a lot of overhead. Turns out you can Powershell a lot of it.
I'm gonna script out the creation of the Sprint and some of the User stories we have every single sprint, then ask for admin privileges to our TFS.
Then I can go exploring :)
(or they might just say "we don't need that go away")
Or even worse... "we don't need that why did you waste company time making this?"

2:04 PM
Does anyone know how to permanently delete posts?

@ASCIIThenANSI you can't
deletion is soft-deletion, not hard-deletion

@ASCIIThenANSI only devs can do that, and you probably need a pretty good reason if you want to bug them with it.

@ProgramFOX Do they ever get auto-deleted by clean-up bots?

@ASCIIThenANSI I don't think so

@ProgramFOX OK.

2:06 PM
A better question might be: What are you trying to delete?

@ASCIIThenANSI Nope.
@Geobits ...and why.

^

Another thing: Is there any way to get some feedback for a Sandbox post somewhat soon?

@ASCIIThenANSI Lobby for it...

@Rainbolt Lobby?

2:09 PM
Don't ask. Just do.

@Rainbolt Oh, you mean just go post it?

"I need feedback on [insert link to post here]."

Oh, that's what you mean.

@ASCIIThenANSI What is "somewhat soon"? Normally, it's a good idea to leave it in there for one or two days at least (more over weekends). If you still don't have any useful feedback after that, you can ask people in here to have a(nother) look (like Rainbolt said).

@MartinBüttner OK. It's been up for about a week or so, I'll go find the link...

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

ASCIIThenANSIHumanity has fallen, work with others to win back PPCG Background The year is 2215. You are a self-evolving KOTH bot. Back in 2015, KOTH challenges were popular, and some people had constantly-running challenges, with auto-updating scoreboards. Now, no one really had time to shut these programs...

2:12 PM
ugh, with all these bug reports and feature requests for the new profile pages I'm running out of votes on MSE

I shed half a tear for you.

Running out of votes just means you're close to the "used all my votes" badge :P

@Geobits Then I need to find 10 questions to upvote as well though. The effort...

oh, is that how it works
you have a maximum of 40 votes per day, but they have to have a certain split between questions and answers?

@ASCIIThenANSI Lack of Sandbox feedback can just mean people don't find the post interesting enough to bother critiquing it.

2:19 PM
Somehow I'm finding Hodor to be an inherently funny word
(just a side note)

@ASCIIThenANSI For challenges like this, I like to add a deliverables section so that it is absolutely clear what needs to be delivered. Something like
1. The source code
2. The language
3. Instructions for compiling
4. A command that can be used to run the submission

@Calvin'sHobbies Which is critique itself ;)

@ASCIIThenANSI It will save you lots of time later, trust me

@Rainbolt All right. I'll go back and make sure everything's clear. Thanks for the help :D

Which reminds me... I still need to bundle together all of those compilers and write a script to install them all and remove them all.
I will do it before my next KotH
@ASCIIThenANSI You don't have to forbid standard loopholes. They are forbidden by default.
On that note, can we rename standard loopholes to "Loopholes which are forbidden by default"? Does anyone have an issue with my making this change?

2:23 PM
@Rainbolt OK. I just see a lot of people putting 'no standard loopoholes'.
@Rainbolt No, because it's clearly confusing people.

@Runer112 You have a limit of 40 votes per day, but you only have 30 votes for answers, so at least 10 need to be spent on questions to be able to reach 40.

145
Q: Loopholes that are forbidden by default

Peter TaylorI've been thinking for a while that this would be useful, and some recent discussions have strengthened that belief. There are a number of standard loopholes which experienced question-setters seek to explicitly close. However, inexperienced question-setters may unintentionally leave them open, ...

dang, now I'm going to need to wait for like another month to try vox populi again

@Sp3000 That's because it is.

Why does the FAQ still have the old title? Do I need to refresh it manually? meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/1280/18487

2:25 PM
Haven't watched so I don't know what the scenes are actually like :P

@Rainbolt I assume hacking other bots and using the internet (unless asked to) is illegal?

@Sp3000 You should rather read it anyway (at least before watching the series) ;)

If it isn't on the list, and you don't forbid it, it's legal and nobody will feel sorry for you when it happens.

Long :P

This is a mean place

2:28 PM
@Rainbolt Why are people so mean? If we just had one or two rules that everybody follows as a courtesy, this would be a better place.

We have like 50 rules actually

@Rainbolt Well, that ends that idea.

@ASCIIThenANSI Although I commented, that was prompted by your comment about GolfScript. I hadn't read the question carefully because on first glance it looked like yet another StackEgg-based challenge and I thought that people who actually cared about StackEgg would be better placed to give feedback.

@Sp3000 It is indeed, but totally worth it.

:) k

2:30 PM
@PeterTaylor Oh, sorry. The thing about GolfScript was because at the time I didn't know where to find interpreters for those kinds of languages.

@Sp3000 That being said, I've heard people say that his style leaves something to be desired. As a non-native speaker I can't really judge that, but I think the world, the characters and the story are all very impressive.

@ASCIIThenANSI Does the challenge describe how communication works? Should submissions read from STDIN, or will they be invoked with arguments? Should they output to STDOUT?

My god.... I have 40k dll files on my work computer, using up 25GB. The vast majority are in the Windows folder :(

@Rainbolt They accept the nodes as command-line input, and output to STDOUT: See 'How your bot should work'.

@ASCIIThenANSI Oh right, thanks.

2:33 PM
Having read it, I think that some rewording and reordering would help. The "Background section" says that you team up with other bots (plural), and mentions no enemies. The "How it works" section introduces an enemy from nowhere. And then the "How your bot should work" section says that you're teaming with one bot (singular) against two others.

@PeterTaylor OK, thanks. I'm fixing the post as we speak.

@ASCIIThenANSI Does "G3" mean "Guard node 3"?

@Rainbolt Yes. "G3" means "guard node 3", "V4" means "vote on node 4", and "M" means make a new node (number is omitted here because node numbers are assigned by the controller.)

In that case, I would change "G3, guard a node" to "G3, guard node 3" in your example. Likewise with the example right below it.

@Rainbolt Thanks.

2:40 PM
Also, it's not clear from the section on tournament organisation how many rounds are played. In the interests of a moderate level of consistency, it probably needs to be round-robin, which means that a tournament will take a long time to run. With just 8 entries, that's 420 rounds.
Also, why would anyone ever guard a vote node? If they don't control the node then it's strictly worse than voting on it; if they do control the node, then it's directly equivalent to voting on it.

@TheNumberOne Has the red team given up?

@PeterTaylor It was an old concept, in my original idea, votes didn't cancel each other out. I realized this was a problem, when both sides vote on one node, one side would have an advantage (due to the order things are processed.) I left it in to see what I could do with it.

@ASCIIThenANSI Here's an idea: Guarding a node protects it for TWO turns

@Rainbolt Interesting...

Or, guarding a node protects it for N turns, where N is some function of the number of nodes currently alive
So that guarding's usefulness scales with the number of nodes
It seems like creating a new node would almost always be bad for you yes?

2:56 PM
@Rainbolt How about guarding 2 nodes?
@Rainbolt No, you can create new nodes to decrease the percent of nodes your enemy has.

Q: Proposal - Sandbox for custom programming languages

ASCIIThenANSIA Sandbox for custom programming languages This was adapted from this answer. I'm posting it here because it sounds like a feature-request. I've noticed a lot of people have invented custom programming languages (ever heard of Pyth?) I've also noticed that people post challenges they think ...

@ASCIIThenANSI But while you are creating new nodes, they are doing something
Simple way to look at it: creating new nodes forever will always lose you the game if the opponent just votes each round
Assuming only you and one opponent to make the math easier:
If you vote and your opponent votes, the outcome is even.
If you create a node and your opponent votes, you lose one, they gain one, and neutral gains one.
If you both create a node, neutral gains two.

@Calvin'sHobbies I'm starting to feel like my answer is putting off other participants. Sorry. :/

3:13 PM
I think my answer might be going a bit too far on the hodor thing
2
someone who's not crazy, let me know if that's going a bit over the top

I don't think I have a say in this... :(

Good thing you stopped after the header :P
Doesn't take long at all to scroll past on a phone, so should be fine

I originally had it at h1 as well, which I thought was a bit too eye-bleedy
so I dropped it down to h3

what does it actually say ?

it says exactly what the follow-up suggests
"CJam, 85 bytes"

3:25 PM
srsly, that long ?

yep
which is why I had to stop, of course. I'm not that crazy :p

3:52 PM
holy crap, I totally missed the announcement of Trine 3... and it looks sick :D

I missed the announcement of the new Breaking Benjamin album. Apparently a new single came out last month

I missed the announcement of Half Life 3 :(

Now if Three Days Grace would bring back Adam Gontier, I would be a happy camper
They replaced him with a guy who got lucky

I missed the announcement of Doorknob entering the chatroom right now

@MartinBüttner We apparently need a feed for Doorknob entering the chatroom.

3:57 PM
@Rainbolt I think they already released 2 or 3 singles by now

Hmmm I only found the one

It's amazing how it sounds exactly like Dear Agony after a 6-year hiatus o.O
@Rainbolt maybe the other one was just a teaser, let me check

I thought it was a little cleaner sounding
whatever that means...

@Rainbolt The best song Adam Gontier ever did was not with TDG, but with Apocalyptica.
@Rainbolt the second one is called Angels Fall

Found it. Can't listen to it here though :(

4:00 PM
2^5 hours until Code Jam round 1A!

@Doorknob It's such an annoying time in my timezone. :/
@Rainbolt Just listening to it in full for the first time... doesn't sound quite so much like Dear Agony... more like Phobia though :D

@Doorknob 32 hrs ?
or 7 hrs ?

no, no, what is wrong with me, no

@MartinBüttner Round B's the annoying one in mine, but that doesn't stop me from 2am coding every year :D

I think the only round I can't do at all is 1C, because I've got an exam the next day.

4:08 PM
Ah, that's unfortunate. Hope you get in before then then :)

yeah, I'll try my best ;)

Guys, I think we need a HoiHoi-san meta.anime.stackexchange.com/q/1166/13551

I don't know... I think I can still google on my own.

Except that maybe we can be less pervy and instead of naming is after a little girl dressed as a maid we can just call it Bob

The only bot I sometimes wish we had is one to roll dice.
5

4:39 PM
using cjam from the command line is a pain

I can't believe Anime allows questions like anime.stackexchange.com/q/20856/13551

namely, getting input for the q operator to terminate where you want it to

@Rainbolt Do you mean the incest, the semi-graphic content, or something else?

Questions about hentai manga

I dunno, it seems a legit and popular subgenre to me. Movies has an adult-movies tag also.
I'm assuming they don't allow very graphic images or text, but I'm not sure.

4:44 PM
@Rainbolt seen anime chatroom ? it is filled with borderline NSFW lollis

4:55 PM
Last week I suggested that they feed their loli bot some men. Everyone ignored me.

literally ?
like as ignoring chat user ?

Qualifying it with "literally" wouldn't make it any less ambiguous

Maybe that was the problem, they'd already ignored him and didn't see the message :P

How mad do you think they'd get if I made my own man-bot and set it loose in their room?
2
Only cartoon men of age, of course.

I don't see how they could really complain. I mean, they could, but it would only highlight the inherent sexism IMO.
Probably not a great way to make friends, though ;)

5:00 PM
I'l borrow images from Free! (do a Google image search for Free! anime if you dare)
@Geobits You don't know much about being gay. Admittedly neither do I, because I only spent a year in a big city. But I do know that acting gay is the only way to find gay friends.
(Which is why I have about zero)

I meant friends in general, not any specific subset. I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about that.

5:17 PM
@Rainbolt I have seen both seasons. the anime is beautiful
@Rainbolt I like this idea!

Someone should run a dehodoriser on all of Hodor's quotes across ASOIAF.
(although I think Hodor actually very rarely says more than one "Hodor" in a single sentence.)

So run a hodorizer on the whole thing instead. Imagine the trees you could kill printing that!

my starred message makes me wonder whether RPG.SE have one in their chatroom, and whether it's called The Dungeon Master.

5:32 PM
OK guys, I changed my KOTH a little, thanks to everyone's help, here it is now:

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

ASCIIThenANSIHumanity has fallen, work with others to win back PPCG Background The year is 2215. You are a self-evolving KOTH bot. Back in 2015, KOTH challenges were popular. But now you want out. You're tired of playing games. And others want out. Your goal is to redesign yourself so that you work in a tea...

My rep is 7667, the most interesting number I've seen in a while.

@PhiNotPi The factors of 7667 are 11, 17, and 41. The factors of 111741 are 3, 7, 17, and 313. 3717313 is prime.

you were planning to continue the chain until you reach a prime number, right ? :P

@PhiNotPi Due your avatars I often get you and ASCIIThenANSI mixed up...
Not a big deal, just sayin

@Optimizer Yes. That's my new game. Your score is how many times you repeated it, 1 being the lowest.

5:36 PM
umm .. 17 ?

My rep is 401. 401 is prime.
@Optimizer What do you mean?

399 is not
@ASCIIThenANSI oh, starting point is the rep :D

@Optimizer This could be a cool challenge...

Woah, I passed Optimizer in rep. That's almost as noteworthy as beating Martin in golds :D

@Calvin'sHobbies EVERYBODY STAR THE MESSAGE!

5:38 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies no its not

@ASCIIThenANSI No, please

I was never a high rater, @Sp3000 is !

Oddly, I have more "people reached" than Calvin. That's just seriously weird.

I'm not sure questions count towards reach, or if they do, they don't much

? Every page view of a question does IIRC.

5:40 PM
@Geobits maybe they are also including your starred messages ...

@Geobits Yeah, I'm guessing answers count more since they really should on most SE's

I only skipped the post announcing them, but I got the idea was it was a measure of the number of people you've helped with your answers

@Runer112 views on your own questions + views on question where you have a "highly voted" answer, whatever that means.
anyway, it's a really important and meaningful stat, we should definitely obsess about it.

the new user profile gives so much more meaninful stats now.

It's weird, because he has more questions than I have questions+answers. Maybe it's because I've been more active in koth/popcon, and those get ridiculous amounts of views?

5:43 PM
@Geobits I think you also answered tweetable maths?

Yea, but I only answered it once, not a bajillion times ;)

I don't think the number of answers counts for that (but I don't know)
and that's 75k people reached

Sweet. Abstract blurry lines counts as reach. I like it :)

Oh cool, the activity tab puts questions on top if you have more of them, and answers on top if not. Didn't notice that before.

5:45 PM
it always did, I think

Yea, wasn't sure if it was new or not, just now noticed though.

you've never been confused by CH's profile then :D

Starboard is covered in Hodors. O_o

Never had much reason to look at his profile :P

5:46 PM
@Doorknob covered? I see three hodor related messages.

Maybe he's going by the individual hodor count, not message count.

possibly
that is quite higgh

@Doorknob Define your terms ;)

@Doorknob Sorry about that...

lol, should have sandboxed my observation before posting it in chat
3

5:55 PM
For one of my larger future contests, would the award of me writing a question closely involving the name/avatar of the winner be enticing? (or weird..?)

@Calvin'sHobbies I believe that depends very much on the winner. :D

both

winner of previous ?

(it could also lead to said winner changing user name and avatar to mess with you)

@MartinBüttner Maybe the winner and a friend swap their names and avatars.

5:59 PM
@MartinBüttner Haha, well I'm not sure how bad it could really be. There's not a whole lot to work with in normal user names.
Just giving bounties seems so cliche

Just hope user23013 doesn't win.

That's a number! I can find something cool about it

I'd say, go for it and give the winner the option to back out if they're not comfortable with it.

@Calvin'sHobbies Here's what I'll do if I win: I'll swap my name to ASCIIThenASNI, and then, after you post your question, I'll swap it back.

I hope w0lf wins, I like wolves

6:01 PM
Ok, planning on it. When will I get my next koth controller ready? Who knows..

I am such an easy question to make

@Calvin'sHobbies When I get to the Tootsie Roll center of this Tootsie Roll pop.

I just saw this when looking at an old contest
private static final int INFINITY = Integer.MAX_VALUE;

@Optimizer I'd close you as too broad.

I got very sad

6:03 PM
@MartinBüttner better than a butt-ner :P

@Runer112 should obviously be private static final int INFINITY = Integer.MAX_VALUE + 1;

or maybe not ?

@Optimizer It's okay, I don't win KotHs.

@MartinBüttner he is holding an KOTH for deciding ? I am never gonna win then

@ASCIIThenANSI Either way seems like it could lead to some programming task :P
@Optimizer Yes, I'm planning another koth like RvB, not team based anymore. Winner gets customised question; HNQ and 20+ votes guaranteed (maybe ;P)

6:06 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies but the rep will be going to you :(

Alright. I'll let them choose for me to write a generic question and they get to post it

that would be nice .

@Calvin'sHobbies Would you be mentioning the question?

@Optimizer that would be messed up.

I guess I'd post it in the sandbox and they could just copy it. I really wouldn't mind. But really, this is not certain right now. I've barely started the koth

6:10 PM
@MartinBüttner why ? that is equivalent to bounty..

It's like a bounty with potential interest

no it's not. you get a bounty for writing a good answer. and you get the rep and associated badges from a good question for writing that question.

its almost like bounty. its his rep, he decides. its his question, he decides..

well sure it's his call in the end

@MartinBüttner I'd still keep the "write a question about me" option open (I post it). And yeah, maybe only offer that since it is kind of a gray area

1 hour later…
7:32 PM
@Optimizer Really? I never watched it because I thought it was fan service but for gay men
Is it actually interesting?

@Rainbolt it is. it does go a bit overboard with bromance, but the swimming aspect is nice

Is it like Prince of Tennis at all?

not seen
i started following anime regularly and closely recently only , like 3 yrs back.
even then i barely like sports anime.

8:03 PM
what even is ised
I can barely find anything about it on the googles
is it just sed
pretty sure it's not just sed
finally found it

8:33 PM
Ised get over here and make me a sandwich.
Or maybe it's Apple's version of sed, the iSed

Ised because I don't get that much rep now .. :(

Haha I love it when someone comes up to me and says "So and so was looking for me"
And I respond "And you are now looking for so and so?"

literally, "So and so" was looking for them?

@Rainbolt chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/21139013#21139013 this chat message deserved it because that is the weirdest way to describe an anime in recent memory.

8:57 PM
@Calvin'sHobbies are you gonna post the dehodorisation challenge before someone picks the low-hanging fruit? :P

@Compass Deserved what? A star?

Objectively the best answer on Programming Puzzles & Code Golf SE. @StackExchange @StackCodeGolf http://codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/48908/3808

(the Hodor solution in Hodor. :P)

I gave Calvin's challenge an upvote just because of that answer
Because I want it to have that much visibility

@Doorknob Code Colf? :)

awwwww, stop it you guys

9:04 PM
rich's getting richer :P

1 Downvote Raid on Martin Buttner, coming right up!

lol

@Optimizer your jealousy knows no bounds, does it? ;)

@PhiNotPi um.
-_-

@MartinBüttner I get jealous of noteworthy people

9:06 PM
