I was just trying to figure out what all the avengers-universe movies are that are out (iron man, thor, captain america, sequels, etc) and stumbled across the fact that, Wikipedia has this as a topic:
There is a body of feature films, mainly live-action, featuring powered exoskeletons. Popular Mechanics said the growth of visual effects at the start of the 21st century allowed for such exoskeletons to be featured more prominently in live-action films. LiveScience said in 2013 that it was fairly common to see powered exoskeletons in films and that it helped educate the public about potential real-life use. == List of filmsEdit == == See alsoEdit == List of films featuring mechas List of films featuring cyborgs == NotesEdit == Films featuring cyborgs are distinct from those featuring...

@JimmyHoffa on the off chance you're still looking: scifi.stackexchange.com/a/45654/35327

@Ixrec ty, I was trying to figure out which ones I haven't seen..

the perks of spending too much time on that site

looks like the only large piece I'm missing is Age of Ultron
Was good?

relative to all of the other MCU films, the general consensus is "meh"

12:10 AM
I didn't hear good things about it, it seemed like there was little fanfare from what I noticed
What say you @Ixrec?
I think Iron Man 3 or The Winter Soldier were the worst so far that I can identify

I enjoyed it, but I'd agree it's in the bottom to middle of the pack of MCU films
people normally put Avengers or Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy as their top one
...so it's possible you have a minority opinion on WS there

Really? Interesting. I'd put Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers in top, but Winter Soldier was a big let down... maybe just because I liked the first Captain America so much

yeah, leaving at "interesting"
personally I also put Ant-Man near the top, imo it's the funniest one so far

@Ixrec it looked so ridiculous.. but people all seem to be saying it surprised them.

the first CA was also pretty good, no question there
very few of the MCU films are duds though, so that puts it in the middle

12:23 AM
you know what, I think I want to see winter soldier again now that I just looked at the trailer. Maybe I'll change my mind; it looks very good

I guess you already have the twist spoiled but it should still be plenty of fun

@Ixrec probably except the part where I don't particularly remember it
the reason I remember finding it bla was it was very cliche as I recall
but then... comic book movie. So, yeah.

something weird must've happened when you first saw it
I mean, of course all the MCUs are somewhat cliche, but WS was relatively speaking one of the least cliche

1:03 AM
@Ixrec I agree with Jimmy here
@JimmyHoffa Iron Man 3 was aweeeesome

iirc Iron Man 2 is supposedly the bad one, though I can't remember much of 2 or 3 tbh

3 is the iron-man-isn't-iron-man one where he basically spent the entire movie without the suit
(I think?)

sounds right
then at the end he had dozens of suits

1:23 AM
yeah, I've only heard everyone agree, iron-man-isn't-iron-man was bla when they were wanting to watch iron-man-is-iron-man

2:20 AM
Scotch o'clock yet?

@JimmyHoffa only silly people who watch for "rar rar rar action" and don't care about the actual characters
it was a fantastic character piece
and very funny too

2:54 AM
it was the worst iron man, salvaged only by Ben Kingsley
And in unrelated news, 8 hours into XCOM2 and I have killed an enemy by having them fall to their death, and killed an enemy via a car explosion. \o/

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is about language design, which is better suited (and already answered) on Programmers. — Matt ♦ 52 secs ago

11:08 AM
Can anyone humour me about what is a persistent stream?

3 hours later…
1:56 PM
@deostroll Without any context, no.
Might as well be a small flow of water trickling through a forest that has managed to prevail for more than, say, three hundred years.

I've never heard the term either, I guess it could mean a stream implemented as a database table

It could also signify serious bowel problems. :(

2:49 PM
@amon thanks

Hi, I'd like to build a domain specific language for a very important school project next year. The theme is "Optimality : choice, constraints, chance" . That leads me to thinking about probability, statistics ... maybe some form of simulation scripting language ? I'm struggling a bit to find an interesting way to fit syntax analysis / language design in the official theme. Any ideas ?

3:56 PM
@Ghuizing Why a DSL instead of a library for an existing language? What would be unique about this language? I don't think its helpful to design the syntax before the semantics are already sketched out.

or the semantics before the use cases
of course we're speaking as practical industry people, for a school project "because we're supposed to use a DSL" is probably good enough reason
the first thing that comes to my mind is simulating evolutionary game theory
it's easy to imagine a DSL for describing Hawk/Dove games

user162403
@amon yes of course, a library would be an idea too, if said language is already widelt used in the target domain. The project just has to be something scientific, it may also be maths or physics. But what I'm most interested in is computer science, so if I have to work on something it might as well be something I like. I'm interested in laguage design so that is, by the same logic, something I'd also like to work on.

a DSL for something in computer science...well you could have one that describes automata or turing machines
I'm not sure what you'd do for language design since we kinda already have a standard DSL for the part that's most ameanable to a standard DSL: EBNF
</two cents>

user162403
@Ixrec thanks a lot for the ideas, I'll look into it!

not sure if any of what I said fits the "optimality" theme but w/e

4:09 PM
@Ghuizing One thing I would have liked for physics would have been a calculator that included the margin of error with all values. Instead of 2 * 5 we could write (2 ± 0.34) * (5 ± 1.7). This can be implemented as a library with custom types and operator overloading, but could also be showcased as a language.
The difficulty here is finding a convenient notation for different kinds of errors.

sadly XeY is already taken
but that would be cool

user162403
that could be a nice library for python! but I think it is a bit limited with regards to what is asked. It has to be more of a mini-thesis (mini-mini) with an abstract, state-of-the art, etc that shows how the student can apply a scientific approch to a problem and that will be reviewed by the schools I want to get into.

4:27 PM
The theme sounds like something using optimization algorithms could be interesting, e.g. genetic algorithms. A DSL used to describe initial solutions and mutations would seem to fit that theme squarely.

user162403
yes, I was also looking about that, or some game-of-life-ish cellular automaton

user162403
searching*

5:39 PM
Seriously?

user55340
@RobertHarvey I find this as clear evidence that python rots the brain.

I must know what Aaron thinks of that

user55340
@Ixrec Lettuce?

user55340
@RobertHarvey I will also point out that this was introduced by John Clements...

Yea, see that diamond thing? Coming soon to a mod only chat room near you.

A: Do Klingons refer to their battleships as "she"?

MichaelTWhen speaking in (or having the words translated to) English, the answer is apparently "yes". However, the Klingon language has no grammatical differences for the sex/gender of an object or individual. The third person pronoun can be translated as either «he» or «she». «ghaH vIlegh jIH» can be ...

6:04 PM
@Ghuizing I think it's kind of a neat idea
@amon this feels like something J would have and work with well

@Ixrec I have been sanctioned for saying what I think of that. So I offer you no opinion. But there at least two other python tagged rooms, so you have options.

???

Where do i buy this diamond you speak of ;)

@DeliriousSyntax a diamond next to a username indicates a moderator

Yeah I've done one of the votes for stack overflow
I was just messin around

why aren't you using === !?

I was kidding

user55340
@DeliriousSyntax I'm just going to point out that gnat has 14,668 helpful flags ( programmers.stackexchange.com/users/31260/gnat?tab=topactivity ) - he's rather familiar with the site.

I already checked his profile before making the comment ;) He's also a software professional
I a lot of rep on stackoverflow as well as programmers
he also has*
I used to have a lot of rep, but then my puppets got deleted :'(

@MichaelT To be fair...

8:27 PM
@DeliriousSyntax for shame!

@MetaFight I just thought my answers deserved a little more attetion

@DeliriousSyntax Yeah, it's great when the rules to a shared system don't apply to us and we can do whatever the f*ck we want. Really, who cares about the impact on others or the community as a whole?
My coffee is giving me caffeine anger.

Need me to ship you another through Fed X?

I still can't tell if DS is joking or not

About getting caught with puppets? No that was 100% for real lol

8:33 PM
@DeliriousSyntax for shame

It was like 2 months agp
I was pissed about not getting any credit for answers that work and the OPs just asking the questions and never getting back on to accept answers

So you decide that because you felt personally wronged that you could justifiably play the system?
Here's some great life advice: Nobody owes you anything.

Yeah, wasn't the smartest idea
Although nothing really happened I just didn't get to answer questions for a week.

Well, I'm happy you're back on the path of the righteous :)

user55340
8:39 PM
The key is to write a question that is good and well written. Easy to reproduce the problem with the example code provided. Clearly show what the problem is.

user55340
Show that you've run it through a debugger at least once and aren't just asking someone to do that for you.

Any question with the python tag that has problems about converting to exe get no attention at all

user55340
Because its been asked so many times before the people who answer the questions have gotten tired of it.

is that really more complicated than "run py2exe"?

user55340
And many times, the reason for converting to an exe are completely mistaken.

8:41 PM
that too

Not really they just need to look at error log for missing files

?

99% of the time it's just them not including files or packages when running the py2exe or cx_freeze

errors are overrated
Also admitting to gaming the system in a room regularly frequented by mods may be even dumber than getting caught with puppets to begin with :P

I'm sure they already know about it

user55340
8:44 PM
I'm sure they know and can read the annotations on the user profile.

hey guys you all watch The 100, right? Right?

The 100?
What's your @preference on it

@JimmyHoffa what's tabletop simulator and why should I pay 10 bucks for it?

user55340
@Ampt Its a physics simulator that lets you play games.

8:50 PM
@Ampt it lets you simulate playing board, card and other tabletop games with any number of people over the internet
so with all the user-generated content it's like buying a digital version of most every physical game in existence, ideally

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
ok fine you've convinced me
Lets start a DnD Game

I'm not sure if anyone has actually created a mod for something that complicated in it, though I'm sure it's at least possible

Where's Duga?

Duga is a female bot

Nope
That's a lie
Duga is a real boy

8:53 PM
Check her profile
She's pretty up front about the whole thing.

No can't be we were supposed to hangout out monday
Is my life a bot to? What's reality anymore

@DeliriousSyntax good one

user55340

Duga appears to also have spun up one for Software Recommendations.

@JimmyHoffa Jessica Jones is a ton of fun. Love the new darker superhero thing going around;

Duga

I'm a female bot that lurks in chat.

I'm built by DeliriousSyntax, Simon, and skiwi.

Duga is a Swedish word that either means "good enough" or "out of the ordinary"

"En bot som heter Duga" literally means "A bot named Duga",
but it also means "A bot out of the ordinary"

"Det duger" means "It is suitable".

Features include:

When used as a Github webhook, instantly informs a chatroom about the activity
Can make requests to Github's API every now and then to check for recent events, informs a chat room if there is activity
It's true she's a bot. I'll never forget you Duga...

@DeliriousSyntax You forgot a s/Del\w+//

9:13 PM
@Ampt anybody takes pictures of whatever board or card games they have, pop them into the game, it has public server browser and mic-talk and then you play the games. Any game anyone has - tons and tons are in the workshop if you look. Just played pictionary.
@Ampt did you grab it?
@Ixrec how complicated? DnD? There's tons of warhammer 40k players in it.. tons of DnD variants

9:28 PM
cool, wasn't sure if it'd actually gone that far or not

@Ixrec oh there's a lot of super complicated games people play in it, I tried picking up some of them, some are neat, some are a bit too much
There's one called Pandemic which people seem to like but it was too much for me to get my head around

that's another real game
there's a tabletop episode on that one

@Ampt most of them are real games; people get the images from their actual game pieces or mock them up in photoshop and build the board for them. I was just mentioning pandemic because it's an example of how complicated the games get as it's somewhat popular/well-known I think

rolling a 401k to an IRA at a different institution is such a good example of the bad UX we were talking about the other day

9:42 PM
@enderland I thought you were talking about a tabletop game for a minute there

@Ixrec be an interesting tabletop game. :P

like The Game of Life, but slightly more realistic

They make it so hard to do, because it's not in their interest obviously to lose you as a customer
but seriously. ;_;

kind of like how signing up for a gym membership is easy, but cancelling one requires certified mail to an address in Siberia on the exact right shade of card-stock using ink in the color of #343434

yeah

9:46 PM
Oh, and don't forget the watermark on the 3rd quarter panel of the back side of the reverse side of the sheet

and you have a 23 second interval to get it delivered!

yeah exactly. It's infuriating
until.... CHARGEBACK!
YOU get a chargeback and YOU get a chargeback and YOU get a chargeback! EVERYBODY GETS A CHARGEBACK!

it's also depressing how large a sum of money will vanish randomly for a while until things are processed
here's to hoping the market keeps tanking during that time :D

yup

10:14 PM
It looks like you are right, though, and the function body is inspected for yield at definition time. Something is badly wrong with Python. — Alexey 55 mins ago
Too bad his downvote got locked in before he realized it. Now do I edit my answer further to demonstrate precisely what I meant so that other confusaled readers don't do the same, or leave it be?

@AaronHall I think I'm going to be hacking writing python for the next few months :o

It helps to have a mental interpreter for the language.

@AaronHall we're basically going to be doing a scripting type of thing and want something better than lots of shell scripts everywhere

Although I still gave myself a "wut?" a week or two ago.
One language to rule them all, one language to find them, one language to bring them all, and in a GIL bound process bind them.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Coperative game about beating back the disease. Try hunting up Forbidden Island to get an idea of how they work with simpler goals.

user55340
10:19 PM
Pandemic is in the middle of the "this is a nice casual game" (Forbidden Island) to the extreme of "You are going to lose" (Arkham Horror)

@MichaelT I've never been able to get into Pandemic that much

user55340
And then there's the "with a twist" of Shadows of Camelot.

user55340
Castle panic is probably the lights of the type of game. Forbidden Desert is a bit harder than Forbidden Island.

user55340
10:26 PM
Note that Pandemic and Forbidden are done by the same game designer.

collaborative games are definitely better for some folks, especially conflict averse people :)

user55340
@enderland Ever play Shadows over Camelot?

user55340
Yea, conflict adverse... STAB IN THE BACK!

10:27 PM
I've not

@MichaelT yeah, I played it twice and got the basic gist, but it was complex regarding how to take turns and what to do and strategy was hard to come up with in any way

user55340
If you're more for zombies.

Also, for anyone who thinks the Blue Angels are crazy

That's where I'm from.
I bet when they fly in formation like that they look like a single bogey on radar.
man, they look like they're trying to touch wings.

10:37 PM
he said it's 6-18" at some points

Who's the he that said?

I'm not sure who is narrating, it might be the guy in the back of the plane with the camera?

pretty sure that's just the navigator?
Like Goose from Top Gun?

I don't know why theyd' use a 2-seat plane though
maybe just for this video?
most f-18s are single seats

Yeah, that 360 camera is mounted... I don't know.

10:43 PM
@enderland guessing it's one of their VIP planes - I hear the blue angels give out VIP flights a lot
that's nuts. I've seen them perform in person but that video is... nuts.

@Ampt wait really? SIGN ME UP

Yeah thats why he had a phone and 0 self control when it came to touching everything in the cockpit haha
turn the video around and watch him

"Honor flights?"

yeah sure, whatever you want to call it

@Ampt it's funny to watch him during takeoff. lol. "selfie time!

10:45 PM
I had a friend who participated in a lot of that stuff, he'd ride with vets up to DC in military planes. Big military booster kind of guy. I met him when he was a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch.

user55340
(Peter Norvig @Google)

interesting I suppose
what's his metric for a "good programmer"?
probably using some HR data.
Anyone ever figure out what happened to Church?

11:14 PM
@AaronHall You mean, aside from his explanation?

ahh the FSA debacle continues... my W2 is incorrect

11:57 PM
Well good for him. Tighten up his focus.

yay work done
2 mins of weekend remaining
what shall I do with it???

Learn Python better?
The 7th habit is Sharpen the Saw.

@amon tl;dr ragequit
@AaronHall meh I've been doing almost nothing but Python for 5 days now
on the upside I do now know it much better :)

Do you think you would have finished faster if you started out knowing it better?

no
honestly

11:59 PM
I took your "no" at face value without the honestly.
