@Mσᶎ Ack.
@nhinkle Nice. Since it has eyelets for fenders, get some that fit now.

1:57 AM
@andy256 I love drop bar bikes with mudguards. And a decent rack.
some muppet forgot to put rack-capable dropouts on my cross bike so I have to use a seatpost mounted rack. Which always feels as though the 15kg weight limit only applies while the bike is stationary. More than 5kg and it fells very wobbly.
@andy256 I have actually tried to find bigger rims and tyres, because if you're going to go nuts go all the way. I wanted to make a matching bike and dike, but 36" was the biggest reasonable size. Ordinaries seem to use solid tyres still :(
And a 36" dicycle would hurt to much when it gerbilled. I would need more like ISO 1.8m rims and tyres :)
Although I see hints about the place that people are make DIY pneumatic tyres by somehow joining 700c wyres (presumably also tubes).

2:24 AM
@Mσᶎ Joining them would be tricky. The wire bead would have to be exactly the right size. AFAIK rubber can be welded.

@andy256 I'm kinda morbidly curious about it, I admit. The idea of the tyre joins holding up under 6 bar seems improbable, but also exciting if they don't... exciting if you're a spectator, anyway.

@Mσᶎ Lol! I like to watch ...
I think I'd be using a boot across the weld.

But I still want to build a dicycle. Ideally a folding one, coz otherwise storage gets ugly.

Nah, go big. Two meter wheels, enclosed passengers ...

@andy256 I'm not sure how I'd do it, mostly because the tyre-making process seems to revolve around a single strip of cloth, then coating on the rubber. How you remove the rubber, join the cloth, re-attach the rubber is making my head hurt because it all has to flax. By comparison joining the steel beads is easy.
@andy256 at 2m getting it into the garage starts to get tricky. By folding I really mean the wheels come off, possible also the passenger zone.
I think I've seen a sociable tandem version that had each person powering one wheel. That would be fun in a whole different way.
Seen video, that is. Ive only ever seen a dicycle in a museum.

2:30 AM
@Mσᶎ I see serious difficulties with emergency stops :-)

@andy256 they call it gerbilling.

Could bring a whole new meaning to loop-the-loop
Lol!
I know I was missing something in my life ...

@Mσᶎ I've always wanted to build an adult size trailer bike.
You just keep adding them on the end ...

@andy256 I suspect that would suck dead donkey... um, would be annoying.
Kettweisel make delta trikes that you can do that with. Much more sensible, no bending to consider
There'
A company in the UK makes a proper trailer bike, where there's a rigid join between the custom rear rack and the trailer bike.
Basically a headset welded onto a front hub, with the axle in dropouts on the rack.

2:35 AM
@Mσᶎ Begs the question how it would flex in the vertical. Got to go and do some work. This is way too interesting!

I'm currently about a week behind in my rss feed. It's kinda nice getting old "news"
@andy256 have fun. I'm having lunch!

2 hours later…
4:58 AM
@andy256 aye. Going to get the fenders purchased and installed at the same time. I've done fenders myself before, and it's possible, but it's such a PITA that with free installation of any accessories purchased with the bike it's a no brainer.

10:26 AM
That's what I call consistency! Lol

@Weirix Hi Weirix!
I was doing some creepy stuff earlier, checking out where Ione, CA is. Not far from Sacramento.
Good suggestion on the used smart phone. It doesn't even have to be on the network.

10:53 AM
That's what I use. I just had an old iPhone laying around collecting dust. Although it doesn't really do anything fancy like a garmin, it runs the strava app well and works well.
And I must say, how did you know the name of my town? Lol

@Weirix You put it in your profile.
I was wondering why you had no cycling groups nearby.

@andy256 I was just about to say nevermind because I looked at my profile and saw it lol. Sorry mate, pretty tired at the moment haha

:-)
Make that comment an answer, since you have the experience.

And yes, I have looked into that. Unfortunately my area just doesn't really like cycling I guess. :/
I don't even necessarily need a club. Just a few people, even. But I can't find squat.

Start your own group. Stick up a notice in the supermarket, and advertise a regular gentle ride, and a more advanced ride. Keep it up for a year. See who comes.

11:06 AM
I've thought of that. I am still only conditioned to rides of maybe a ten mile max distance, so i wanted to get a little more developed first.
But I'm sure there are plenty of others right at my skill set. I just might try it.

Yep, start with the ten mile ride. I see the city has a couple of designated cycle trails. Maybe use those.
Upvote a question if it's not dumb and was worth your while answering, esp from n00bs.

We have a few main cycling routes, yeah. These routes are mostly 50+ miles though, and my area is vast and mountainous.

Ah ha. So just nominate a reasonable destination. Remember to say all ages welcome, to get more people. Good for the community.

True true. It would be fun.
Unfortunately in America, although a lot of people do cycle, our population as a whole really doesn't partake.
I think our national percentage of regular cyclists is around maybe 10-20 percent. Nothing like other countries, like the UK for instance.

Yep. Just be consistent. Start at the same time and place, every time. People will start to recognize there's that cycling guy.
And some will come along.
How far to the nearest bike shop?

11:17 AM
Haha oh what's the reference I'm thinking of. "If you build it, they will come."

Lol.
I'm thinking of whether the nearest shop would give support to the group.

There is actually a bike shop in the next town, maybe 13 miles. It's really small. Now that you mention it I think the shop has its own club, of sorts. But it mainly operates in the other half of the county
Might be an opportunity to make something like a separate branch

Ah ha. Check them, and go for a ride :-)
After a few rides, start the conversation.
Anyhow, I've got to focus on my work ... it's after 9pm ...

haha yeah, I just might look into it.
Alright @andy256, take care bud. Catch you later

@andy256 - "last accessed", is that "Last Accesses Bicycles SE"? There's a lot of names on that I don't recognise as contributoes, I think the first one I do recognise is Kibbee
But then having said that the last time I accessed (in other words, read questions asnd contributed content) was several months ago, so I'm not really qualified to judge
@nhinkle that looks like a nice bike. I don't recognise the make but 105 is a good group. My first road bike was alu 105 setup from some years back, it got nicked in the end but it saw me through my first sportives.
But I have to say, all it did was to whet my appetite for a carbon frame, so.......start saving ;-)
Ahhhhh,it is the summer bank holiday in the UK, so I guess most people are off work today. I wouldn't know for sure since the only time I left the house was to go out for a ride.
I did one of my regular routes whick has a challenging hill early on. There were some folks out on a group ride, either standing or walking their bikes up. So I pushed on extra hard haha

@PeteH Yes, it's "Last Accesses Bicycles SE". The data is from the previous UTC 00:00, so it never shows your current access. An access is just logging on, AFAIK.
I figure if I pass someone, especially on a hill, I better prepared to maintain that pace for at least the next few minutes. I don't want to be a yo yo.

Good to hear you got out. Spring is springing here. Looks a lovely day (for the first time in months) for my Tuesday Coffee Ride. It'll be good to get out of the house and have a yarn with a few of the blokes in the bunch.

@Mσᶎ Good morning! I'm not really here ...

10:45 PM
@andy256 I'm not all there either :)

11:11 PM
Hello everybody.

@nhinkle - congrats on the new bike. i've never liked tektro brakes, so i'd consider swapping those out too.
i'm having a hell of a time trying to figure if my crank is cracking or its just scratched.

11:39 PM
ok so crank isnt cracked

Amazing, new photos make the answer much more obvious... bicycles.stackexchange.com/a/33053/7044
