Can the How did you crash? question be rescued? The idea seems good - to catalog crash causes and ways of avoiding them, but is this the way to do it?

1:39 AM
@andy256 @jimirings I don't think it's really an appropriate topic for the stack exchange format. I think the intention is good, but the way it's presented is wrong. Rewording it to something along the lines of "what are some common types of crashes and what can be done to avoid them" could work, but I still fear it's too broad and likely to just become an endless list of anecdotes of "well this one time I crashed when..."
(cc @freiheit)

Yep: endless. With arguments as to why mine is bigger'n yours.

If I had enough rep to close vote, I would.
FWIW.

One could be provocative and say crashes fall into two categories: ones I caused, and ones caused by someone else. Half the time ones caused by someone else could be avoided if I did something else. So I caused it. And on. And on ... good thing I'm not provocative :-)
Anyhow ... can it be rescued? I don't really see a way.

2:01 AM
BTW @nhinkle on your lights database I don't see reviews of BBB lights. Just curious why or if, since I use one on the front. I'm sure you can't review everything!

@andy256 not sure I've heard of that... linky?

2:17 AM
@andy256 (cc: @jimirings @nhinkle) I think that question could be the start of a good blog post, but not really salvageable. Too much of a poll, discussion and personal story question.

Anything where the answers start with "I'll go first" is a bad sign IMO. Stinks of /r/askreddit.

A question like "what are the top causes of crashes" or "top cyclist-caused crash reasons" or "top fatal crash reasons" could work. Those can be answered with research into data on crashes, research, etc…
and now the question is closed.

Uh, client interruption ...
I have an older one that I don't see there.
@freiheit Sorry to see it go. Hard to write a good question :P
But I have to say that quality of question corresponds to quality of answers, and both correspond to value of the site.

Every now and again some good "poll" questions come up. I can understand why they get closed because of the constraints of the SE format. But maybe this is where the "community" aspect of Bicycles SE is coming in - people want to interact with each other in way which are beyond the existing framework.

good morning!

There are various polls which could be useful in terms of pointing people in purchasing directions. For example, what tyres people use, what lube people use, etc. etc. All entirely subjective.....but there again it's from people whose opinion you respect.
Morning @Rilakkuma, where in the world are you today? Still in Holland?

yes, but will head to Tokyo today

Greeting @PeteH, @Rilakkuma

Hi @andy256!
Holland was so good I will definitely come back.

7:47 AM
Hi @andy256 having a good day? Just thinking about going out for breakfast here!

You'll lose a day flying against the spin :-)
Or is that with the spin?

I already won a day when flying here! :)

I used to hate flying east, jetlag always got to me

with the spin, right.

yep
so a fun week?

7:49 AM
Yes, thanks @PeteH. Had a ride. A cold spring day here. Climbed a little hill (17% I think). Time to go and organize dinner.

Life revolves around food.....I'm not complaining!

Catch you in a few hours :-)

Very busy, got hardly alive to the room at nights on working days, on the other hand every free moment was really enjoyable. Amsterdam is fabulous city and sort of reminds me Tokyo with its diversity and contrasts.
Bon appétit @andy256!

oh very European!!!
Yeah, when I used to go over to NYC I was single and happy to stay over there and live the lifestyle.
Contrast that with a mate who had a young family, wanted to put in 16-hour days so he could get home
We generally worked very well together, but this one was a sore point.
But if you're going to travel, its nice to see the place as well as the office.

I've heard NYC is quite diverse too.

7:54 AM
If you're a single 20-something, NYC is perfect.
But I would not want to raise a family there

Is it too huge, too quick or what's wrong with it?

I suspect you'd find it has a lot in common with Tokyo, from what you've said

Can only compare to Tokyo but Tokyo is very good for family, on the other hand.

Wrong? Too much concrete, that's all

agree here.

7:56 AM
But always something to do, 24/7. We never ate at home, going out was so cheap. We only ever had beer in the fridge.

yep, regarding going out - nearly forgot it is not as normal in Europe as it is in Asia (and I guess US)
prices for the same stuff are radically different.

It has changed a lot. As a boy, we almost never went out. But as I've got older....
But Europe is very expensive to go out to eat
But Mrs is off work today and we are talking about going out for breaskfast.
What time do you fly?

now it is 10 and my flight is over 2 PM
will have to start packing soon :) (did not do it yet...)
We stopped at the place called Haarlemmermeer which is on the opposite side of the airport if you look from Amsterdam so it takes about 10 minutes to get to the airport

geez.....a week's stuff ....must be tough ;)

but Internet says checking in there and security checks take incredible amounts of time so it makes sense to go earlier.
Ah, not really :) I mostly wore suits and shirts so they can be packed really quickly
+ all the 10 types of cheese to take home :D

8:02 AM
yeah.....you waste a lot oftime at airports
ahhhhhh, cheese

cheese, marzipan, vijgenbrood - all the things hardly reachable in japan :)

I'm gonna have to go get showered now. Hope flight is good. See you when you get back home.

if you happen to go to Japan to visit someone, take cheese - people will be thankful!
Thank you! Have a good day too!

;)

will do packing now, too ;)

2 hours later…
10:30 AM
For what its worth, I lived in NYC for some number of years. It is tough to raise a family there (the money required alone is absurd now), but it helps if you live in the right neighborhood. I probably wouldn't go back to living there (commuting from the burbs or jersey city or something is a lot better for most people).
@andy256 17% is a "little" hill?

@Batman I was in NYC for a little under a year I suppose, but for all that time I lived in a "paid for by the company" apartment in Battery Park City. Worked on Water Street, so only 10 minute walk. But when I had discussions with the company about being over there 100%, it became clear that with the package they were offering, I'd only be looking at living in a shared house, and not in Manhattan. That was the reason I headed back to the UK.
@andy256 we have a 25% nearby, but it is only literally a couple of hundred metres in distance. So its mostly just a test - first of brute strength, second in terms of "can I unclip sufficiently quickly that I don't come off?" I think I only did it once out of maybe four attempts.
But we have several hills around here which are maybe 10% over 1km or so (so therefore climbing maybe 100m). I prefer these.
I got the shock of my life when I went cycling in Mallorca last year - the climbs there were also maybe 10%, but they'd be 6 or 7 km
It's funny, when I first started cycling my biggest buzz was simply "going fast", but over time that has been dwarfed by the sheer exhilaration of cresting a decent climb. My mate did Ventoux earlier in the year, I want to try this at some point. Also places like Huez etc. Takes a bit of organising but definitely possible.

11:08 AM
Back.

@andy256 New and improved?

Well, er, fed anyway :-)

what did you have? We had poached egg and bacon on toast......there cannot be a better breakfast!

Schnitzels and vegies.

nice......we don't get schnitzels here much.

11:14 AM
Yep, BnE is a great treat.
Confused. Make 'em!

This last week (at home), I've been on the porridge. It's getting to that time of year

Uh! Not my favorite!

Make em? Schnitzels I'm thinking of are pork escalopes

Chicken or Pork.
Cut 1cm thick.
pound a bit

in breadcrumbs?

11:16 AM
dip in egg and breadcrumbs
fry.

ok, same thing. Have never tried making them though.

My wife dips em in milk and egg
then flour
then breadcrumbs

We never buy pork, if we have chicken, we tend to just have chicken

Hers are better.
Schnitzels made with pork chops are the best!

Got half an eye on the cats at the mo.....there's gonna be a fight shortly

11:18 AM
Water?

Nah....more fun to watch 'em

On one hand, they've got to sort themselves out, on the other the vet bills can be big.

But it looks like the boy cat made a retreat. He's a real woos.....he's twice her size

Situation normal.

yeah, she just jumped back on my knee

11:20 AM
Lol
Just got to reply to Nathan.
Uh Batman :-)
@Batman Well, it's only about 40m. We went up it 4 ways, 3 of them are 4 to 8%. My buddy and I are planning a ride in a week or two that climbs about 400m at 5 to 7% (I think). The whole ride is 70-ish km. Thinking of trying my hand at a blog post.

Yeah I'm thinking a lot about his Meta question. I have (always had) ideas on this, but have never put them to paper.

Yes, saw your comments.
We need to come to a common way of handling such things.

Ideally I'd like to put something into a Visio diagram, then upload it and invite collaboration. But I don't think SE supports this

Maybe post the diagram to google docs and link to it?

Yeah, could do something like that. Reckon I'd need to use a third-party site though

11:24 AM
A google plus thingo?

I have a Google plus account, but have never used it
One of these things that comes with having an Android phone

I just set up a private Google+ community for Beta testing an App. We could do that for this kind of thing.

(I am also looking for a new phone at the moment btw, pity there doesn't appear to be an SE site!)

Do you like Apples, Androids, or Others?
They're getting too big these days.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I'm interested in "the same only newer" but phones have a worrying trend of getting bigger. I want smaller.

11:27 AM
Yes, I have an S3.
Apart from the screen res, it's no better than the S2.
But I like it.

There is an S5 Mini that has caught my eye, seems to be 5mm less than my current phone (height & w, not d)

Cost?

About £300 GBP sim free
"Official" Samsumg cost £389

Sounds good.

Need to find out what it can do, and importantly what it can't do

11:29 AM
Why move from the S3?

4G

Que?
My S4 does 4G.
Confused.

My S3 doesn't. I think the first wave of S3s only did 3G

Ah.
I'm not sure I'd do it.

But also my phone is 2 1/2 years old.....it kinda feels like I should be upgrading
(I know that's wrong)

11:32 AM
4G isn't really better, 'cos everybody uses it, and the network always has a fixed capacity.
Maybe it's better there.

Also, Mrs also has an S3 and is continually talking about "upgrading" to an iPhone
She bought an iPad a while back and thinks it's the mutt's nuts

Wrong is such an ... guilty word.

I have a poor track record there!
Ask my power meter

Oh. Not sure if thats about the dog or the guilt

;)

11:35 AM
My wife has an iPhone and wouldn't change.
Had an interesting talk with my financial advisor.

What did they dsay?

He's changed his entire office system from M$ to Mac.
Using all the latest gizmos - cut his IT bill
in half.
I was surprised.

Wow, brave. Just goes to show that all those business apps that were never available for the Mac.....must be available
Interesting, I would have always liked a Macbook........but always felt I would need Windows as well

Yep. And if you're not doing anything that needs custom systems ...

But much as I like Apple's innovation, their stuff is locked down and overpriced
That was the reason for me to go Android

11:39 AM
That's what I always thought.

all those years ago. I think my original Android was the original Galaxy

I think Android is a nice system to work in.

well it's very linuxy

I think it wont be long before people say I switched all my office systems from M$ to Android.

whenever I hear the word "superuser", my gut feel is that someone didn't design their system properly

11:41 AM
Intresting.
Wacky spelling.

I finally rooted my phone a few months back....and all I wanted to do was to change the voicemail number (I moved operators when my contract ran out)
but I was very worried in case something went wrong

While Android is built on Linux, how do you see that at the user level?
Yep. Good to have a 2nd phone :-)

I was unable to change the voicemail number as a "normal" user, thought I might be able to if I rooted the phone. But I couldn't.
However I use a backup program which previously could not see other apps'

Hm. Must be a way :-)

When I rooted the phone, the backup program can now see everything, so it now backs up settings etc. from other apps

11:44 AM
Good.
I think.

I had to grant it special permissions, so I think all other apps will still be restricted to their own memory space

Yep. They run as their own userid.

But I'm hopeful that changing to a new phone will be a simple backup/restore

Only they have write access to their stuff.
I'm sure both Samsung and Google say that it is.

That's another problem swapping phones - at the last count I had 70-something apps installed. I could reinstall those apps easily enough, but all those settings...

11:47 AM
Lol!
I find there's always some app I've forgotten.
It's the same with a new computer.

Yeah, a real pain

I'll probably start that mega-bike list thing tonight - stuck in meetings for the bulk of the day time

The one I find the worst is setting all the ring tones ...
They never have the same ones.
Good luck with that.
I'll prolly be incommunicado all day.
Hi @Batman. Just realized I'd read your msg as though it was from Pete.
Brain did a backflip over the time zones.

Yep. Its currently 6:50 AM for me - trying to catchu up on work before all the meetings and what not i have to deal with today

What kind of mtgs?

11:56 AM
@Batman lunchtime here, my afternoon will be spent painting (wood-preserving) a log store. Hopefully a ride later. But we just had a downpour so task #1 is on hold. Good luck with those meetings
@Batman and @andy256 you both need to sort your avatars out!
(or does that just mean I have too much time on my hands?)

Never knew where he was. 7am would put him in the Mid West.
Been thinking of some kind of photo.

Love how Rory is always showing as logged in, yet we never see him

@Mσᶎ has too much time. He has a different avatar for every site.
Lets test.
Hey @RoryAlsop! Anybody home?

I have the same avatar for all sites, but due to individual restrictions I must have created about a dozen sizes for the bloody thing!

Lol. Where did you get it from?

12:01 PM
It's actually a garden ornament that I photographed, way back.

I'm thinking of just a pic of my helmet.

Did you ever get a kids tv programme....it might have been called "The Herb Garden"... contained the characters "Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot men"

With lights, camera, batteries, ...
Yep :-)
Our ABC shows anything it can from the Beeb :-)

Well this is Bill......or Ben! Saw them in a garden centre once and thought "yes"

Ok Billben.

12:03 PM
;)

We have a creature here called a Bilby.

presumably not the cockatiel

For an avatar?
Interesting
The cockatiel's name is Rex.
He hates me.
But then he seems to hate every one.

hmmmm.....an unpleasant pet. Not good.

There is actuallty a reason he doesn't like me.

12:07 PM
was that the time you tried to strangle him?

A bunch of years ago he got an eye injury
And now I have to catch him every day
or sometimes twice or thrice
so that we can clean his eye

ah, animals and medicine. Not good.

Who would enjoy that?
And every time he tried something different to avoid capture.
He's a smart devil.

The cat who adopted us, we've had a couple of vet visits lately. I'm surprised she's forgiven us

Food.
And cuddles.

12:09 PM
Probably the former
Worst one, they opened her up only to find out that she'd already been speyed!

Won't be too long b4 she thinks she runs the place.
I laughed about that.

Already does.

Haha!

Apparently there is no reliable way of knowing....without risking pregnancy

No reponse from Rory.

12:11 PM
He did respond once, his browser seems to log him in automatically

I don't always remember to "leave" when I ... er .. leave.

But you'd think there'd be some kind of period of inactivity

Maybe that's why his avatar is greyed out.

After all, for the chat to automatically refresh, the browser must be hitting the server quite regularly

Yep. So his browser has a page open, but he's not sending.

12:14 PM
Maybe. I'll leave the room temporarily, does my icon disappear?

Yep.
Drops down, kind of gracefully fluttering ...

back

When I knock off, I just hibernate my m/c. See what my avatar does, and tell me with @andy256 so I see in the mornin.

but gotta go now in any case (normally I just either walk away or close the tab). Lunchtime, then painting. Maybe with a bit of browsing for phones if I'm lucky!
will do

Ok.

12:16 PM
anyway, will check back later, bye for now

Cheers!
@PeteH when you get back, tell me what you decided to do with the suggested edit to this answer - if it was you that dealt with it. I saw it in the review Q and wasn't sure what to do. Looks like it was rejected. By you?

@andy256 hello - was away voting

Ah greetings!
We were wondering if you were online or it was just your computer :-)
What kind of voting?

Some independence nonsense our country is doing...
:-(

Aha. Scotland.

12:25 PM
yup

Look on the bright side

it also means I'm having to work from home, as the school is one of the polling places so my youngest is off school

you live in one of the few countries where it can be done peacefully

@andy256 I see no bright side - whichever way the vote goes, there will be a bigger divide within Scotland than there ever was
@andy256 You haven't visited Glasgow, have you? ;-P

No.
So, the grass is always ...
darker?

12:28 PM
heh

But seriously, on the one hand the rest of Europe is getting together
and on the other, there are all these nationalists ...
Is the vote binding?
We always vote on a Saturday. Never understood why other places don't.

@andy256 I think it will be, yes, so if by some freak chance the nationalists are successful, that's it - union broken. Great Britain finished. Just like that.

Then you'll have a referendum on joining the EU. Very strange.

@andy256 it's a pain in the proverbial

And what will happen to everyone's citizenship? What a mess. Like unscrambling an egg.

12:39 PM
@andy256 that's a phrase I like. (might steal it)

Go for it.
What work are you doing?

@andy256 I do security/governance/oversight etc for large corporations, generally
(my Security.SE profile says it all :-)

Nods wisely.

lol

That means I have a vague idea
But no idea how to actually do it :-)
I'm a great believer in, as someone said, knowing ones limitations ...
and abilities.
I'm mostly a programmer.
And Probably always will be.

12:47 PM
@andy256 I was a programmer - 20 years ago
fell into this by accident initially

Me too.
And 30 years ago.
And 40 years ago.
I like programming.
But it's hard to get someone else to pay an older programmer.
I have a friend who's older than me and still works (a little) in Cobol.
When he has work it's for mega Euros.
The accidental career is the most common.

@andy256 Yep - I do still need to do a little COBOL coding, now and then - but only because I am old and no-one else wants to train to do it, despite it being very well paid.

Old. How old? I'm 58.

1:05 PM
@andy256 okay - I'm a wee bit younger then. But definitely one of the old hands in Information Security - it's a youngster's industry

They all think that.
The youngsters I mean.

heh

As though nobody else can learn.
Had a funny experience in my previous f/t position. They wanted someone to help them bring their software processes out of the last millennium. Didn't work out. It would have required all the youngsters to change.

@andy256 that sounds familiar
@andy256 I do have members on my team who are under half my age, though...

Remember I said I was a programmer 40 years ago? If I go to an interview most interviewer were'nt born when I started.
I think it intimidates them.
So they find some reason to move on.
I think they have to feel in control. Sigh.
As I said to PeteH, I'm enjoying my Android work.
Anyhow, I have to close this machine for some Microsoft caused reason ... catch you later. Good luck with the referendum result!

1:25 PM
later

2 hours later…
3:09 PM
@andy256 I'm only 46 and I get that. This is one of the reasons I went on my bike mechanics course, to see whether a career break could become a career change. Unfortunately that came with its own obstacles - in that game the 20-year-olds really did run rings around me.
Way underestimated the amount of wood preserver I'd need. Have to go to shops now for more. So that was Log Store = 110GBP, Wood Preserver for Log Store = 60GBP, new cordless drill/screwdriver to put Log Store together = 90GBP
All together = expensive Log Store!! In fairness, I did need a new drill, the old one is fifteen years old and was only around 20GBP even then.
@andy256 you icon has disappeared completely btw. Officially you no longer exist

6 hours later…
9:15 PM
Yeah, but note that my avatars are very simple.

9:50 PM
@Mσᶎ All those confusing words!

10:26 PM
I'm excited for this weekend. Biking around the rim of Crater Lake! google.com/maps/dir/42.911431,-122.1475949/…
Howdy @Arrowfar. I don't think I've seen you here before.

Looks good! Quite a lot of up and down.
Greeting @Arrowfar

user116848
@nhinkle No, I new new in this chat room. hi :-)

user116848
@andy256 howdy!

@andy256 yeah it's going to be a bit painful on the up, but the down should be rewarding! If only we had road bikes...

Uh got to go!
Enjoy!

10:34 PM
@Arrowfar welcome! Exploring new sites today?

user116848
@nhinkle haha. Yes.

user116848
@nhinkle I usually hang around English SE chat but there was no there so I thought I should see other sites' chat too :p

You ride much?

user116848
@nhinkle I had a bicycle but I lost the habit a long time ago :)

user116848
But I can definitely ride :)

user116848
10:38 PM
But not very fast you know. I go at a normal pace on bicycle.

There is a new handicap world hour record - they're broken 50km at last! The open record is 90km, but at least the funny bike people are making progress.

user116848
I watched a cool bicycles post delivery movie some time ago. i can't remember the film name though.

@nhinkle That looks fun!

just did my new daily commute... ride 20km to the office, discover they're still painting it (fumes give me a migraine), ride 20km home. Somehow riding in the morning is nicer than in the afternoon.
Being able to work from home is very nice. But first, a shower.

@Mσᶎ ugh. I hate paint fumes.
@freiheit it should be awesome! Expect a blog post soon after.
@Arrowfar it's never too late to get back into it!

10:45 PM
@nhinkle yeah, with me it's one of those sneaky things. I sit there thinking it's not that bad until I realise that that's all I'm thinking, I haven't actually done anything useful for the last hour. And now I have a headache.

@Arrowfar If you desire assistance with finding the right bike right here is totally the right place to ask. :)

user116848
@freiheit Yes, I know :-)

user116848
Cool SE site

user116848
I didn't know there were so many bicycle lovers out there

user116848
That they had to make a SE site for it :)
