1:36 AM
why?
also id rather not have kids with jammers pranking people by killing their brakes.
or hjave to relearn how to brake

1 hour later…
2:44 AM
yeah wireless was not the point. It was electronic brakes. but that one appears to be an electric servo
I was more thinking of an ebike motor in reverse, so momentum is captured using electric coils as the brake. They'd be non-contact, so no wear

1 hour later…
4:14 AM
@Criggie, Dave Moulton's got some strong opinions on crank length today

5:11 AM
Yeah - sorry about that.

5:23 AM
I asked the question the other day and it may have set him off.

5:48 AM
What is that big ass lead acid battery doing on that brake? They couldn't even afford a hobbyking lipo??
p.s. Some ebikes have regen braking. Not really worth it, you only gain a few percent in range back.

Its not for range
its a non contact brake
somethign that would work without friction
but by having electromagnetic fields argue.
That picture is not what I meant - that seems to be a caliper connected to a servo
an electrical motor pulling the brake on is still dependent on friction.

6:43 AM
@alex Anyway I still see value in trying a 190+ mm crank, but buggered if I'm paying new price for one.

3 hours later…
9:19 AM
Hi @Criggie. How are your goals going?
This is my end-of-month report for the year so far: Distance 1,209.6 km, Elev Gain 10,330 m, Rides 20.

Interesting @Dave Coulton. I'm surprised he talks mostly about long cranks, I thought the current vogue are short cranks.

My distance is on target, elevation is still a bit low.
Hi @gschenk!

Ciao Andy

andy: goals are pretty shit at the moment. I never really committed to a number at the start
Plus the fires got in the way, no riding on the hills for a bit.

Do you have goals for the year. Criggie and I compared goals. Good motivation if other ppl know what they are.
Yeah, I always think it would be like a marshmellow if we got caught in a fire.
Not in a nice way either.
I rode today, 1050m of climbing. Nice descent. 87 kph.
It was a good surface.

9:31 AM
that's cringeworthy

Which?

The fastest I've ever gone is low 70 km/h and that was on a MTB with super wide bars
the descent speed
Does lycra burn or melt ? Serious question

I was taking it easy :-)
I don't want to find out!
I was just looking at your extremely comprehensive answer. +1 :-)

Spandex: It burns and melts, but does not shrink from the flame. It has a chemical type odour. Its residue is a soft black ash. An acidic or rubber smell like a hot pencil eraser
I felt that was turning into more of a waffle.
Not sure if the video of the cyclist riding the road helped or was a bad idea.

I think some of your answers go a bit far :-)
Got to go water the garden. Hot here yesterday, today, and expected tomorrow. I watered two days ago.
Ciao for now!

9:37 AM
I'm still tempted to create a "one word answer" account and see how badly it does.
"is biking lower wacker drive in Chicago a good/feasable idea?" "No"

Oh, back on the answers point: obviously others don't agree with me!
Yeah I often feel like making such wise answers. Can yo identify my bike? No.
Every one of those answers would be sent to the low quality queue by the community bot.
Anyhow, I'm going!

Bogans and yobs!

That was quick, I'm back. Dinner is nearly ready.
@gschenk Life ...

I can't think of the english name for them
churls?

... lasts longer when not cycling on Wacker.

9:52 AM
:-)
It's like so many questions: if you have to ask, the answer is no.

I can't think of the word
and googling's no good

When my kids were small I taught them "Never ask a question if you won't like / can't cope with the answer".

CHAV!

Do they have chavs in the states?

Er, if the definition is only in Urban Dic, I don't use it!
Because it doesn't match the image I cultivate as a fuddy duddy :-)

9:56 AM
There's a Bollywood film banned bogan.

... sorry, literate person ...
@gschenk I couldn't parse that.

Err named.

Ah
Bogan (English: The Hedonist) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language film written and directed by Lakshman and produced by Prabhu Deva and Ganesh. The film stars Jayam Ravi, Arvind Swamy and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles, with Akshara Gowda, Varun, Nagendra Prasad and Nassar amongst others in supporting roles. Featuring music composed by D. Imman, the film began production during March 2016 and released on 2 February 2017. == Plot == Vikram (Jayam Ravi) is an honest cop in Tamil Nadu who tracks down a criminal named Aadhithya Varman (Aravind Swamy) who mysteriously robs jewels and money and is holding...

I hope that answer won't get a lot of cycling Bollywood fans in peril. :-p.

Ah, dinner calls ...

10:00 AM
The word bogan want new to me, and I'm not a native English speaker. The point is quite self explanatory. Good answer!

@gschenk you can press up arrow and edit your previous lines, at least for a few minutes. "Like this."<-added

Haven't found out how to do it on the mobile site.

Oh - people still do that ?
:-P poke the borax
So - a gear question.... are prescription cycling glasses like this worth it?
or are they just more tat ?

10:16 AM
I hated mine with a passion. My father loved them.

10:27 AM
Cycling with regular prescription glasses could lead in rare cases to face injury in accidents.

What did you dislike about them?
Should this be a full-blown question ?

10:44 AM
Mostly the weight, but also weight distribution. The prescription glasses were so close to my eyes that I noticed them, and lastly it got quite hot under mine.

10:56 AM
Mind that it was ten years ago and might be specific for that survived pair. It was also on a bad shape as it was handed down to me. (Spare parts did cost more than a new prescription set. That's why I got the inner glasses and an old outer grave for free when my dad needed spares.)
Today I'd look at work safety glasses by uvex and bolée. The prescription models are mostly parts compatible with their main line safety glasses. The latter cost about ten to fifteen quid.

ok
I'm not looking at spendy ones
for example
$15 US + the prescription lenses.
There's a bunch for about that.

1 hour later…
12:16 PM
@gschenk I use such prescription cycling glasses. They're fine; they have polycarbonate lenses.
@Criggie What risk do you see? I think they're safer than normal glasses because the lenses are protected.
@gschenk To edit an old message on mobile, hold the message. You should get an option to choose a message or edit this one.

12:36 PM
@andy256 yes, those are safe. With regular I referred to the everyday, not specific sports, spectacles.

12:47 PM
I have two sets of glasses - my "driving" set and my previous lower strength driving set which devolves into my normal-usage set.
I can only go no glasses at distances under a hand-span

1 hour later…
2:05 PM
Those MTBers these days are hardcore. On one hand they write about trails that are only a few hours away from them, on the other its all about descending: extra wide bars, zero stems, max knobbly tires, only one hand position, not even bar ends for climbing.

3 hours later…
5:00 PM
i wear my glasses everywhere
including the shower :-|
but im blind without them.

3 hours later…
7:45 PM
@Batman dito.
Mostly having to wear spectacles is a minor nuisance. With cycling it gets really annoying though.

You get used to it. I've tried contacts as well. didn't like them

Contacts can be quite good. However I cannot use them for hours after getting up. Also forces me to uses cycling glasses. Choosing dark sunglasses may get quite hairy when one gets into a thunderstorm or delays 'til dusk.

3 hours later…
11:01 PM
@gschenk, I hate it that it's all about descending, especially on man-made trails. What's the point if all you do is let the gravity do its thing and go down.

11:45 PM
@CristianCiupitu Different stroke for different folks. Some skiers take a chair lift and zoom down. Others take the scenic route. Others do whatever will get them noticed in their group. So long as they don't interfere with me ...
@SuspendedUser Greetings!

hey
havent seen you in a while

@gschenk It's called downhill. And like golf it falls on the skill end of the spectrum rather than the endurance end.

Hi @Batman!

heyas @Batman
for anyone planning on moving 3400 miles away (not sure what .se board that is) if you are doing it with 2 small children, three dogs, 2 cats and a partner, I suggest you fly instead.

11:47 PM
sus: sorry for calling you a Canadian the other day

I was Canadian for 9 days, so I am totally fine with that :)

hello everyone
@SuspendedUser where are you mving?

@Batman he's moving to the next house down the road.

Now located nearerisher your neck of the woods in Rogers City Michigan.

oh cool

11:49 PM
no more "HTFU" answers for "how do I ride in the cold?" questions?

upper peninsula?

@SuspendedUser So, I take it that you didn't fly?

@Criggie - no, that place is still freezing i bet

Did you ride? You mad bastard! Well done!

I'll still dole those out, supposedly it hits -20F here regularly

11:49 PM
oh no, not upper peninsula
still, top part of MI

just below the bridge on Huron
from 60k people Fairbanks -> 2700 people

i rode in today, but had to take the bike home and bring the car in
why did you move there?
(it's going to hail, and work has a parking garage. home doesn't)

My wifes family is all in Michigan, and small children apparently needed more family time

that far north?
you coiuld have lived somewhere sane like detroit

Her parents are farther north in the UP, her middle sister is above them in Marquette and herbaby sister is down near Detroit
f'Detroit
that place is an armpit
I hate going there to visit

11:52 PM
well detroit suburbs ar enice
and theres people

My company is in Ann Arbor, would have been nice too, but the "job for her" was here
Alpena is like 30 minutes away, they have Home Depot and Walmart, so it's pretty civilizationish
it's nice enough and has a small town mentality, hardware store guy delivered $400 worth of goods today by walking over to the house (it's like 25 yards away) and then just told me to pay him next time I walked by

and she couldnt find something in ann arbor (which is a lovely place)
?

not for what she was looking for
she wanted a clinical pharmacy position NOT in a hospital

._.

she is going to be the only pharmacist in the local clinic, so she'll still get to consult with physicians and be involved with clinical decisions, but doesn't have to go to codes and watch babies die anymore
going to codes (and pediatric codes specifically) was starting to wear on her

11:58 PM
makes sense
alright, im going to go run to get dinner before the potential hail storm
brbbl

don't get knocked out
