@andy256 - a quote? what is it exactly that you do?
i am also supposed to be in germany for part of the summer, though not near frankfurt.

andy is a bike spanner weilder
so I guess he's looking to repair a bike that's been in a smash
Insurer will want 2-5 quotes, then if they pay, the customer can do the work or take the cash.

fair
id probably take the cash in most cases
8.3k is more than ill likely spend on bikes over my life though

2:00 AM
hehehe yeah there is that.
Depends what the bike cost to replace
I did some rough numbers - my $123 road bike has "cost $711 "

2:59 AM
@Batman I have become one of those dreaded online retailers. Brother retired to Italy, and after the fact decided to stay, so I ended up with the odd stock from his shop. But I also have a list of customers to support, who mostly bought high end bikes. One crashed his bike the other day, and totally wrote it off. So I had to quote on replacement of a new all carbon Campy Record race bike with cheap Mavic Cosmic Pro wheels, plus shoes and computer. He already replaced his helmet and outfit.
So those numbers also included a few non-bike bits.
While good for my nascent business, it was sad to see the wreckage of a beautiful bike. I'd only ridden with him a hour earlier.

and the insurer owns the bike if they pay out on it

@Criggie Fingers crossed the insurer will be happy with the one quote, and tell the client to take their business elsewhere. We'll see how convincing my assessment letter was :-)

so you know its going in the tip, or to a wrecker.
Hopefully your custy gets to keep it
and can pilliage any useful stuff,

Yep. But often they don't want it.
Or me :-)

I have a buy-out option on my car

3:05 AM
Just yesterday I sent a used part off to a customer who had broken a dropout. Because they're a customer and the part was used I sent it free.

nice work - you build up goodwill that way
but customers will always shop
"OOO look shiny thing on wiggle/ebay/whatever"
and I've found my local LBS is basically the same price for most things

Re the value of the bike velominati.com/the-rules/#25

those CO2 bottles, $5 was cheaper than I could buy them online from T7, and they wanted freight.
But wiggle UK had them for $1.50, just would not freight them.

I don't know how they can mail them.

value of bike > car? I'm trying to remember before looking

3:08 AM
I can't.
yep, that one.

hazardous courier/freight companies.
Same way gas cannisters or volatile paints or any scarey chemical is shipped

So I dunno how they get away with it.

Nuclear particle sources for Xrays are fun - there are special lead-lined vans that are used to move them, but painted up in the same livery as a normal courier van
The only giveaway is teh <radiation> plate on the bumper

Yep

So - freighting firearms
or ammunition
would be very similar
not like you can post a box of bullets.

3:11 AM
Ugh. I've been out all day. Got to get on with other stuff, including answering an email from PeteH. Ciao for now :-)

You almost want to send ammo / guns in a lockbox.
ok - HI TO PETE!

:-)
OK!

3:30 AM
@gschenk a narrow-wide ring stopped my dropped chain problems
not a massive sample size...
it was a 9 speed sram, from before 1x was cool

4:18 AM
nifty
Riccarton Mall to Papanui Rd
LIVE 12 min
CAR 10 min $2.55
BUS 11 min $2.05
BIKE 12 min
So by bike at 17 km/h you'll get there in the same time as the cars,

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne this weekend

Who are they?

pair of belgian races
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, previously Omloop Het Volk, is a one-day cycling race in Belgium, held annually in late February. It is the opening event of the Belgian cycling season, as well as the first race of the year in Northwestern Europe, and holds significant prestige because of it. In 2017 the race will be included in the UCI World Tour for the first time. Until 2016 it was ranked as a 1.HC event of the UCI Europe Tour. The race starts and finishes in Ghent, Flanders, and addresses the hills in the Flemish Ardennes, marking the start of the cobbled classics season in Europe. Due to its ear...
Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne is an annual single-day road cyling race in Belgium. It is held one day after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, on the last Sunday of February or the first of March, and completes the opening weekend of the Belgian cycling season. It is ranked a 1.HC event of the UCI Europe Tour. Tom Boonen holds the most wins with three victories. == History == === Early editions === First held in 1945, the race was run from Kuurne, a small town known for its textile industry, to the Belgian capital of Brussels and back. In the 1950s it served as the opening race of the Belgian cycling seas...

9:16 AM
ahh makes sense. "Mr Omloop H. Nieuwsblad" could be someone's name
vaguely foreign-sounding
Wait - its winter there?

"spring"
the first of the spring classics
looks like highs of 10 or 12
so not totally unreasonable

htf can you have spring when we're still in summer?

shrugs
it's nearly march
i think march qualifies
I would usually say either Nov, Dec, Jan or Dec, Jan, Feb

Hey @Criggie,heard from Andy that you were asking after me. How's life? I'm good. Wanting to get myself a car to get myself mobile again, also wanting to get myself a part-time job.
Not riding yet, still too cold here anyway.
