@SuspendedUser thank you.
ask an emotive question, get an emotive answer? :)
I also couldn't resist putting in one of my favourite dad jokes: (the lifetime risk of death remains 100%, obviously)
@andy256 I still not-fondly remember the "big tractor" we had at one stage that had three gear levers, and it was a bit of a nightmare to drive because they were not high-low range times two, plus a 3 or 4 speed box. No, no, no, these people had decided that 1-2-3-R should be "full gears" driving a 1-2-3 box with "one third gears", then the diff shift between high and low range. So every third shift was two levers, and of course both levers were long and on opposite sides of the transmission.
Old farm machinery seems to have been built or at least designed in farm sheds a lot of the time. There's way too many things that are really handy, if you happen to want to do that one function. And the rest of the time you wish there was a plate covering the PTO outlet under the driver's seat, rather than just some springs and an old vinyl seat cover... we had a truck with that feature.
(which, apparently, was to allow a hay bale conveyer/lifter to be powered by a vertical shaft through the roof of the truck... in left hand drive countries, I assume).
