4:46 AM
well, ebay's dangerous isn't it.
dodged a bullet when deal extreme wanted me to jump through some hoops, but I had to open an ebay account to get the bearings I needed
and now, with very little effort on my part, I have massive watch list to keep an eye on

dx wanted you to jump through what kind of hoops ?

send photos of the front and back of my card
which isn't somthing I'm going to do for them
and is almost certainly against their agreement and mine
and not their job
I want a yankee nipple driver
this year's job is building some wheels from scratch

5:06 AM
weird
I never had any verification stuff like that
then again I use paypal to do the payment

well, I have a PP account now, so I can now waste a load of cash on DX :D

heh remmeber its chinese shit.
they lie baldly expecially about batteries and capacity

ha
I'm sure they do
I found cheaper listings for the kedge camera mounts I wanted on ebay, so I might still stay clear of DX
and I found sidi ratchets for less that 50GBP!
yay
when I got hit by a car, on of the buckles on my shoes was broke, but I didn't notice and claim
next time, everything, no matter how trivial, is getting listed

5:37 AM
man I haven't been hit by a car for many years
I need no car to fall over though :)
anyway - you don't want a yankee nipple driver
you want a small yankee screwdriver with a 1/4" hex socket adapter
and then any number of cheap modible bits can be fitted

@Criggie yeah, my $100 action cam is still working great, except that battery life is down to 30 minutes from 60 and still falling. After a whopping 50-ish cycles. Not impressed.

that sucks. As a workaround, have you got a USB powerpack?
my gopro runs for 90 minutes by itself, or over 24 if running on the big pack. Downside its an extra cable hanging about, which will flap and damage plugs/sockets.

"soocoo"... great camera, pity about the battery. I'm trying to work out how to get USB power into it while it's on the bike. I suspect I will need to remove the battery and rewire the innards if I want to get a wire in while keeping it water-resistant.

don't ride for > 30 minutes in the rain?
Mine I have to power it on, start recording, and then attach the USB cable for power, else it goes in to "IMA DISK" mode and stops recording

@Criggie much as I like that idea, in practice it would generally mean walking in the rain, or sitting on the side of the bike path in the rain. There isn't a "ring mummy to come and pick me up" option.
@Criggie yeah, which is a giant PITA. I am beginning to think the light+camera people are going to get my money in the end. Especially as I'd rather use my hub dyno for power, since that's a small dongle, rather than the 3 or 4 16550 cell battery pack I have lying round. But if I have to twiddle buttons every time I start moving again... ew.

5:45 AM
Yeah - I dropped my 18650 pack somewhere last week
its history :(

@Criggie part of the PITA factor for me is mounting it properly. I have rack mounts on the headset so it's just a matter of drilling and bending some aluminium strip, but it's a nuisance. And it's another half a kilo of crud to remove from the bike every time I lock it up outside a shop.
coz as sure as I don't remove it, someone else will...

There is that. Consider putting it on your helmet? I don't like that idea though

Also, what's with the rush of new users? Is it new school time in the USA or something?

end of their summer, so yes.

@Criggie I am more inclined to buy a full face helmet than bolt stuff to it.
I bought a new helmet recently, fluoro yellow and skid-lid style in hope of getting some MIPS-style benefit.
And I am starting to do stretches and rolls on the back lawn, because I did one the other day and discovered that it hurt. Obviously more practice is required.
Hopefully the mods will agree to remove the nazi question. The temptation to observe that cyclists were not born cyclists and can change if they want to, so hiding from actual nazis would be straightforward... doesn't seem helpful.

5:53 AM
I doubt you can get a yankee nipple driver that isn't a 1/4"
just wanted a yankee anything since I saw brazil for the first time

@alex I'e never tried to drive a yankee nipple. Are yankee's nipples different from normal people's nipples?

shame they don't make them any more

yes - they have a weird clamp interface
I bought some adapters for my dad
cos he's been using them for years

does he still have both eyes?

Now he can slot in a torx or whatever and go nuts.
yeah - why?

5:55 AM
that's why they don't make them any more

How so?

you need to be careful when you unpack them

Its a spring loaded screwdriver. If you can't use a tool right doesn't make it dangerous.
It merely shows a lack of ability.
or a training gap, as the PC police call it now.

@Criggie yes and no. If the tool is easy to use dangerously but hard to use safely, especially if the dangerous way is obvious or the danger is subtle, it's generally a bad tool.

"can't be blamed for not being alert for a danger you didn't know existed, so its poor labelling"
(note subtle sarcasm here)

5:56 AM
moz is right here
i nearly got a faceful when I found one at a car boot years ago
I was about 16

I'm missing the point - is the danger to the operator or a bystander ?
Ohh someone who picks one up by the pointy end and turns the release all at once ?

that's what I did

gotcha
I thought you meant it was dangerous to use.

it was bent so it didn't come out too brutally

The answer there is store them extended, but that leads to rust and bending

5:58 AM
they're pretty harmless to use

that's why I was confused :)
right - 1800 I'm going home
later!

There's a whole heap of tools I inherited that I decided I would never use, so I donated them to a museum and asked them to metal recycle rather than garage sale any they didn't keep. Coz some of the older stuff... makes a straight razer seem safe.
@Criggie see ya!

night

I should do a bit of work, I suppose :)

ha
I'm diligently avoiding work
hard to get going after a week off sick

6:02 AM
my office is currently pretty impossible, too much going on. And it was starting to rain, so I came home. Forecast tomorrow is "stay in bed" weather, so I will prob work from home. But I need to go in after that, people to annoy :)

2 hours later…
7:52 AM
HAH
I just biked home with a landrover drive shaft on my bike
that was interesting

8:05 AM
heavy?
try a bicycle chain next time
first DX order placed
wooooo
load of cheap gopro stuff
see if it's any good

1 hour later…
9:29 AM
EEHEHEHEHE its Hotel California
you can check out any time you like....

11 hours later…
8:10 PM
i've bought stuff from deal extreme before. cheap stuff, woudlnt' buy anything i relied on for safety or is prone to going wrong (like i wouldn't buy batteries there).

I have and would again, if they would ship the damn things now
whats funny - I couldn't buy some cr2032 button cells because they "might explode in aeroplanes"
but I could buy some cheap blinkies which come with 2x cr2032 in them

2 hours later…
10:35 PM
I mentioned to a road cycling guy here my new cassette
He asked what the bottom gearing was, I said 26/28
He burst out laughing
:-\

cyclists suck. particularly road cyclists.
too much about fancy gear and stuff, not enough about riding

11:06 PM
he's a good guy but what's wrong with hauling my arse up the hill in 26/28 ?
other than being slow

cause real cyclists haul up hills in 53/11

11:55 PM
I head down hills in that gear - close enough ?
Getting some horrid chain grind now, in every gear except for 46/14
