12:00 AM
old enough to be supported by the nouveau driver too I guess.

I will dig around, see if there's a way to put it onto the LiveCD coz I used my spare SSD in my laptop so I can no longer use it for testing OS's. Half the office still uses legacy disks so there are definitely no spare SSD's here.
but first, my day job :( Have to tidy up some code and test a quickie mod I threw together yesterday.

I use 8GB USB drives for some test work. They're super cheap and disposable.
IE unfuckup yesterday's dirty hack ? I can read between the lines.

Nah, more of "I NEED THIS FEATURE NOW, JUST DO IT" and now I should test it to find out whether it does anything other than the one thing the boss cared about yesterday.
Coz it does that. It would be a shame if it also did other things. It doesn't obviously misbehave, but it's conditionally modifying fairly low level code in a way that could silently discard information we care about, and the only way we'd find out is when customers complain that they don't have it/
Eventually complain... better to test.
I have an old 8GB USB drive but it's USB2 and slow, especially for running an OS off. I'll reformat my 64GB USB3 drive and use that, then VeraCrypt it back up again afterwards.

PFF I have a 32 MB USB1 drive that I still use.

One joy of small companies is that I have a 2TB legacy disk in my machine that's my personal property. And it's encrypted.
@Criggie I gave all mine away when i was selling photos. People were sometimes weird about getting a cheap USB instead of a burned DVD. Lots of them appreciated it, some where like "why not give me a DVD? I wanted a DVD?"
But when you're shipping a hundred MB or so to non-internet customers, $5 for a USB drive instead of $5 for a DVD, case, mailer and extra postage pays off, mostly because it's much harder to break a USB drive.

12:10 AM
true
Joy of medium sized company is when they over-order lunch, there's craptons of leftovers

@Criggie my gut microflora have strong opinions about many foods, and are not shy about expressing them. So "free company lunch" is usually "stand round making small talk while other people eat, and try to deflect questions about why I'm not eating".

Yeah I know
I've had too much cake

12:26 AM
@Criggie but was it worth it?

1:01 AM
indubitably !

The rusty derailleur question is right up your alley, Criggie. I saw the photo and thought of you.
Listening to music sorted alphabetically by artist has its moments. The Jesus and Mary Chain are followed by The Kings Singers. Angsty 80's boys with guitars straight into acapella cover of Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations'. So I skipped to the KLF "justified and ancient". Apparently Tammy Wynette was preserved in alcohol and it's a modern miracle of the mix desk that she sounds human on that track.

1:39 AM
WHOOO I have multiple DX packages at home
Noo toyz nooo toyz

2:28 AM
@Criggie and it's nearly home-time. Toys!

And at least 2/3 of them are bike things
I got some NOS chainrings off trademe.. will see if they're any good.
Moz: whats "biopace" ?
:)

Darn it would be handy if the mod tools showed most prolific downvoters.
@Criggie a marketing tool used by CNC machine makers to sell machines to chainring manufacturers.

well they were cheap, and my old ones are almost toothless
can't be any worse

@Criggie that's no way to talk about your wives.

www.trademe.co.nz/986258305 $15, cheaper than wives.

2:51 AM
I still find it excessively cool that I have a wee program that pokes my server to say "dump this to the log file so I can see what's going on" with a bunch of options. It is very handy, but mostly it feels cool to be able to do that.
It's like a debugger, only without having to have a debugger.
Also, and relatedly, my program relies on caching a lot of data because I use megahertz not kilohertz to describe the rate at which packets arrive in the system.
(and yes, more than half of them are junk, but that's the way the internet works)

6 hours later…
8:48 AM
Bugger - the new chainrings have the wrong BCD

9:30 AM
sucks to be you

1 hour later…
10:42 AM
Ahh well - it came with a replacement brake caliper which matches my existing ones, so I have a spare, plus a brake lever which is totally useless to me :)
More spare parts.

Hmmmm.....there are scurrying noises coming from my loft. I think today will be a day of laying poison and setting traps.
We had rats in last winter, I spent ages trying to find out where they were getting in. Looks like they're back.

1 hour later…
11:56 AM
Fed up hearing about this black friday nonsense

12:11 PM
but I wonder if anyone has a deal on rat poison?
