I'm sorry. Hopefully there will be bbq.

Is there a diamond in the house?

I meant another Stack Exchange site: programmers.stackexchange.comPM 77-1 32 secs ago
@PM77-1 - This question would not be well received on Programmers. It would be quickly closed and likely heavily down voted. Please see: meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/7182/…GlenH7 just now

user41796
On the site? Doesn't appear to be so.

user41796
@durron597 Is there something grossly wrong and needs a CM to deal with? Or can it wait until a mod can clear the flag?

@GlenH7 It can wait until a mod can clear the flag.

user41796
12:54 AM
ok

user41796
I can go chase down a CM, but I'd prefer it be really, really urgent before I do that. :-)

user41796
Or World's radar will go off and know he's being talked about indirectly

@GlenH7 It can definitely wait.
Can mods set preferences somewhere to make them see flags if they're not on the site? Like to their phone or email

user15026
@GlenH7 Yeah, especially if it's not a site you yourself are a diamond on. Because that can get kinda sticky.

user41796
Needs to be grossly offensive at that point

user20683
12:56 AM
@GlenH7 as in the site is literally burning down

user15026
@durron597 Not really - like you can check them on the full site on your phone or whatever, but that's trickier than I'd like just in terms of how things scale on mobile.

user20683
I don't have a mobile device that is new enough to do that

@WorldEngineer Aha! There is a diamond in the house. Diamond, I flagged something on meta.

user15026
It's rare that there are flags that can't wait for a mod to pop around or whatever

user20683
@durron597 I'm under no obligation to do a thing about that. I might. Or I might let someone else handle it. Or not handle it.

user41796
12:57 AM
I recall one user switching their gravatar to a full frontal photo. That one needed to be swapped out pronto.

user15026
Yeah, there are always exceptions to that.

@WorldEngineer you should shake your magic 8 ball to decide

user20683
@durron597 I roll dice like a real nerd

user15026
But generally, most flags can wait. They're things that need to be handled, sure, but it doesn't have to always be instantaneous. It's nice when that happens, though :)

user20683
our flag handling time has never gone up in the time that I've been a mod

1:00 AM
@WorldEngineer d6 - help, ignore, ask cm for advice, temp-ban user, ban user from my site, ban user's ip from all sites

user15026
What, no setting things on fire option?

@AshleyNunn that's on the premium deluxe d8. the other is stab in the face over the internet

user15026
@durron597 Oooh, I see. I assume that one costs extra?

user41796
I never got to the level of having custom dice made. Perhaps that was for the best.

user15026
1:04 AM
@durron597 O.o

user15026
They don't even LOOK like much

user15026
Someday I want to have my own dice set, but that would require having people in person to play with or whatever and I don't currently have that

user41796
@AshleyNunn That's the point. Look at the clarity of the crystal

user15026
@GlenH7 I guess they're really clear, but dang, that's a lot for something I will probably lose

user41796
It's more than I'm comfortable shelling out, true

user15026
1:06 AM
I just know I'd lose them

user15026
I tend to not want people to spend lots on jewelry for me for the same reason.

user15026
I am really good at losing things.

@AshleyNunn Note to self, if I ever have an occasion to buy you something, get you some tiles

user15026
OMG YES

user15026
If I had those, I'd've not lost my keys forever a couple weeks back!

user15026
1:13 AM
(I am still mad, because they had this awesome Rainbow Dash lanyard on them that I loved)

user15026
They're expensive though :(

Just bought a bunch for my mom for her birthday

user41796
There are other versions of the that too

user41796
Tile was one of the first to market and probably has the best reach

user41796
but there's another that works well if the device is within bluetooth range

user15026
1:23 AM
I just like the idea of losing less things

if all operations are done through your API, and there's no other way to affect the available quantity and the sum of "taken records" (i.e dba or another system inserting records) , then you could calculate the taken sum once (on a system start up for example) and save it in a counter of some sort? This will speed up your system, and remove the need to calculate the sum on each insert, update and delete. P.S. I suggest you move this question to programmers.stackexchange. Since it's more of design question. It will have more views and ideas. — Roman Mik 49 secs ago

@MichaelT I still don't understand why having 5 nested loops is a problem.

user55340
@durron597 what if you have 6 items in elem[]?

user55340
3:10 AM
> * The example has five elements in the elem array and the nested loops to handle it - how do you handle it if elem array was determined at runtime? It could be five, or six, or ten or whatever elements in the array. The nested loops only work for one array size.

@MichaelT yeah, ok, i understand, but it's still unclear. hm.

It's more suited over at programmers.SE because at this stage it's more conceptual rather than "I have this code, how would I fix this error". Feel free to c&p to programmers.SE and delete this one :)ʰᵈˑ 54 secs ago

Q: I think my question was closed unrightfully

qdinarI think http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/283068/can-sponsors-attribution-be-required-by-gpl3-additional-terms was closed unrightfully. user55340
> What you are trying to do is also a bit unclear to those reading the question (and got an answer that misinterpreted the question and was deleted by the author). That is why it is closed as unclear. It is also likely considered off topic - it delves too far into the legal world.

user114359
12:14 PM
What is the standard for closing as a dupe on meta? If two meta questions are talking about two different questions being closed for the same reason, are the meta questions dupes?

user41796
@Snowman That's what led me down the bunny trail - his comment about it now being deleted.

user41796
I had forgotten about the self-delete by Bart

user55340
@qdinar the revision that was acted on was revision 1. That version might have been on topic (some licensing questions are on topic) or off topic... however, at that time it was unclear what the problem was. Reopening and reclosing the question for a custom off topic message would be purely cosmetic and have the same ultimate outcome (the auto deletion script (aka Roomba) deleting a negatively scored closed question with no positively scored answers). — MichaelT 23 hours ago

user55340
It's all really quite academic in that "it would get deleted eventually in any case.

user55340
Off topic vs unclear on revision 1. The question is still supposed to be closed. That is what matters.

user41796
12:22 PM
The whole "what it should be closed as" concern was ... whatever.

12:44 PM
This question is borderline "primarily opinion-based" and would probably be more on topic on Programmers.SE, but I'll hazard to answer it... — Jubobs 39 secs ago
@Jubobs "primarily opinion based" is a close reason at Programmers.SE too (I am not sure this question is too subjective though), same as here. Please read: What goes on Programmers.SE? A guide for Stack Overflow. That being said, the asker should probably search Programmers.SE for similar questions because I know we have a few similar to this that might help. — Snowman 9 secs ago
@Snowman I regret using the phrase "primarily opinion-based". What I meant was that the question has more to do with good practices in software development, which (correct me if I'm wrong) would be more on topic on Programmers.SE than on Stack Overflow. — Jubobs 58 secs ago
Well, I had not heard about Programmers.SE yet so first, thank you for referring me to it. I truly did not mean to ask an opinion based question, but rather sought experienced VCS users' or managers' way of handling this problem, which I think would be better justified than my choice based on little experience. — hdl 7 secs ago

Also the "acorn" default configuration on that page is quite cool

user15026
Oh, that one is neat!

Conway's game of life gets really interesting when it's played on a taurus (the top edge wraps to the bottom, and the left edge wraps to the right)
then things like gliders can come back and actually keep the chaos going

user15026
That's awesome

I wrote a music game a while back that used John Conway's game of life. It was a tone matrix game with 16x16 cells. I had it so that the cell "universe" wrapped around at the screen edges (cells on the far left are linked to cells on the far right). I was sure that the JCGoL mode would make it a HUGE success. I was wrong :) Barely anyone noticed it.
Apparently I was the only one who thought a self-evolving piece of music was cool.
or maybe my UI just sucked ass and nobody could find the GoL feature. Probably that one.

2:30 PM
was it decent to listen to or just chaos?

It was really nice actually. The 16 notes mapped to 3 octaves (+1 note) of the pentatonic scale. So it was impossible to make anything sound dissonant.
It started off as a wii homebrew game. I got a lot of positive reviews there:
then I ported it to xbox 360 where it did ok.
fun times :)

user15026
Aw, I was hoping it was something I could poke at, it sounds very neat to me

If you have an xbox 360 I can give you a free download code.

user15026
I do not, sadly

@MetaFight I do

it's a legit download on 360. It's homebrew on the wii.

2:38 PM
Congratz on your project, looks like it was really fun

thanks :) I learned a lot (made tons of mistakes) when I wrote it.
does anyone want a download code? I found them.

My xbox is modded so I can't get it online

I want one

@durron597 BVTDC-7VRYG-8F2HM-6CF6H-XTWFY
that should give you a free download of the game. If it doesn't work please tell me and I'll give you another code.
(there's a small chance I already gave that code out and forgot to update the spreadsheet)

> Success! You now own Harmonium.
Thanks!
How hard is it to put games on the xbox store?
Do you have to pay a hosting fee?

2:47 PM
You need to pay a membership fee to publish (something like 100 USD a year) and that's it.
once your game is published it's hosted and sold forever for free.

are you making more than $100/year on the game?

I still make about 70c a month :)
@durron597 nope
I made something like 4k in total. not bad for someone who barely knew c# at the time.

sweet!

user15026
@MetaFight That's pretty great.

@MetaFight nice

2:49 PM
The community of devs was pretty active and most of them were really nice. A few did it as their dayjobs making roughly 40-60k (GBP) a year.
but I think the market crashed a year or two after I published.

time to start developing for xbox one

@TheTime - That changes the purpose of the table. Currently you have "Every week on the given day this route has a stop visited at this (local) time". Changing it would make it "At this particular date/time, this route will stop at the given location". You'd have to put in a row for every date... and I'd probably still recommend having the current table for other reasons. Given your current table, you can derive the date portion. This will depend heavily on what your db is really going to be user for (separate question here/Programmers.SE for design questions). — Clockwork-Muse 59 secs ago

@durron597 I've thought about it. I just haven't had the time to look into it yet.

3:06 PM
You have working code you are looking to improve. That's a code review. This site is for getting help with code that doesn't work. At least that's my overly simplified take. There's a good meta post about this (and using programmers SE). I'll see if I can find it. — rmaddy 14 secs ago

I've gotta say, Duga is a popular guy!
@Snowman have you got any CVs left?

user114359
I just used my last one a few minutes ago.

@Snowman I'm out, I want to tag that question you edited as duplicate
I just left a normal comment.

When I get home, I need to figure out why the Eclipse Process Framework doesn't want to work with a 64-bit JDK.

user114359
@durron597 I have mixed feelings on that. The one you linked is broader, and I don't agree that (more specific question on X) is always a duplicate of (more broad question on X). In this case, the specific technologies of Spring and Maven will likely give a more meaningful answer to the asker than high-level techniques in the other question.

3:20 PM
@ThomasOwens maybe it uses dlls (jni) somewhere

@ratchetfreak Is that really an issue? I thought a 64-bit JDK can run everything. Doesn't it have a 32-bit mode?

user114359
@ThomasOwens Nope, a 32-bit DLL cannot be loaded into a 64-bit process (the 64 bit JVM)

@Snowman That's dumb. But it's probably it.

windows doesn't allow 32 bit to be loaded into a 64 bit process

Maybe I'll just install a 32-bit JRE, then

user114359
3:22 PM
@ThomasOwens If you can find a way to load a 32 bit DLL into a 64 process, with different pointer sizes, then call Microsoft and tell them you want a job :-)

not unless you employ some hacks

@Snowman I don't want to do that.
Microsoft is just so far away from Boston.

have you considered dropping some of your bits?

@Snowman some of the system dlls are loaded in both the 32 and 64 bits

@MetaFight So maybe I should just remove every other bit from the DLL, yes?
That works, yes?

3:23 PM
@ThomasOwens that would solve a problem. Maybe that problem will be yours.
you'll never know unless you try.

I think I have allergies. My head is killing me.
