12:00 AM
Or perhaps I underestimate my knowledge of SE mechanics... :-)

user20683
@GlenH7 uh, no.

user20683
you probably know more than I do in some cases

user41796
@WorldEngineer I blame MichaelT in that case. :-)

user20683
mostly involving elbows and knees

user20683
just remember that every site has it's own culture

user41796
12:02 AM
There have been quite a few questions roll through ME.SE, to which I've wanted to respond "How did you not know this?!" :-)

user20683
@GlenH7 what works for programmers, often won't work on other sites

user41796
@WorldEngineer I'm trying to be super careful about that. I realize Progs is obsessively focused on high signal:noise and that's not quite apropos for other sites - especially ones in beta.

user15026
@GlenH7 Yeah, that's definitely something to be aware of for sure

user15026
Remember, especially in the pre-mod stage, the site is just trying to figure itself out

user20683
@GlenH7 take a look at the other science sites that are older betas

user20683
12:03 AM
physics went through a hell of a war

user41796
Engineering should not be a replica of all the aspects of Progs

user41796
@WorldEngineer oh?

user20683
@GlenH7 they were a forced merge with them and theoretical physics

user41796
Is there a reader's digest version?

user41796
oh jeez. ouch.

user20683
12:04 AM
the theory physics folks got on their up quarks and decided that everyone else was down quarks and then went all asymmetrical over it.

user41796
Did SE not know what they were doing that way?

user41796
yikes. SE literally would have been better off just killing off the smaller of the two sites then.

user41796
Merging those communities would be impossible

user20683
@GlenH7 that's what would happen in most cases but this was fairly early

user20683
these days, it's generally better to let the beta fail and then repropose it

user20683
12:05 AM
but I've not seen a site actually die in a good while

user15026
mutters about Libraries and Literature

user15026
mutters more about how POKER was left alive, but not Libraries

user41796
I've been fairly oblivious about the various beta sites. Too busy closing off crap on Progs. :-)

user41796
@AshleyNunn << Hugs >>

user15026
I am not bitter I promise ;)

user41796
12:07 AM
There I finally got the formatting right.

user15026
Hooray!

user41796
@AshleyNunn Yeah, there's proposals that I definitely raise an eyebrow to.

user20683
My phone is AT&T. My browser's launch page is AT&T. My launch page's error codes are 200. So to AT&T an error is a success. Explains much.

user15026
@GlenH7 Like Lifehacks? facedesk

user41796
Is the private beta a fixed window of time? Or is it a variable window and based upon participation?

user20683
12:08 AM
@GlenH7 minimum of a week

user41796
@AshleyNunn <tunelessly whistles>

user15026
Private beta is usually a week, more if they feel it needs it for participation or ironing out things reasons

user20683
longest I've seen was a month I think

user41796
I suspect Engineering will go public fairly soon then. It's pulled down ~100 questions in the first week, and there's several of us who have already cleared 500 rep.

user15026
@GlenH7 oh very nice

user20683
12:10 AM
@GlenH7 that sounds about right

user41796
Although I did lose my 1st place spot on user rankings

user20683
@GlenH7

user20683
for your amusement

user15026
@WorldEngineer I wanna like this, but....it does the robot voice thing :(

user41796
12:11 AM
nice

@GlenH7: I'm a Sennheiser fan, myself.

user41796
@RobertHarvey gorgeous clarity

user41796
They would be my go-to pick if it weren't for my being a bass-fiend.

That's what tone controls are for.
I've got a pair of HD 650's and a pair of HD 595's.

user41796
True; and to be fair, I haven't had a chance to listen to their higher end models in a while. So I really can't comment on what bass response is like now.

user41796
12:14 AM
Historically, they've always gone after clarity at the expense of depth in bass. Which isn't a bad thing, just their particular direction.

user41796
And they've got a resounding reputation in the professional circuit.

user41796
12:38 AM
Really?! I closed down chat that that last (removed) comment? I'm ashamed of myself....

1:05 AM
@GlenH7 get your event subscribers sorted?

user41796
@JimmyHoffa No, I had to cut out from work about the time I was ready to put the code together. So I'll tackle it in the AM

aye. Remember, the objects that subscribed could also just be thrown out and then the whole graph would be GC'd if nothing else.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa That's what I'm going to aim for, yes

user41796
been difficult to reflect out existing subscriptions though

I mean as opposed to unsubscribing
Perfect time to learn how to inspect a memory dump... you could find out exactly what objects are subscribing.
or rather, can you not run it in a debugger and identify that?

user41796
1:13 AM
@JimmyHoffa zero time to deal with that. Charge code belongs to another group which is getting pissy about the fact it's not done despite cameras not having shown up until this week....

user41796
@JimmyHoffa And no, the async aspect of all the crud makes it difficult to see who owns what memory.

user15026
@GlenH7 I've been studying my A+ stuff like a good kid

user41796
@AshleyNunn props

user41796
Keeping the blog entries queued up?

user15026
@GlenH7 Did one yesterday, have enough percolating in my brain for another later this week or early next

user41796
1:20 AM
W00t. :-)

user15026
No idea if anyone reads, but I figure it is good for me to talk about what I am learning

user41796
@AshleyNunn The site ought to give you the ability to track visits, doesn't it?

user15026
@GlenH7 Yeah, it does, but I have no idea if that means anything really :P

user15026
Like it gets views, but like....I figure it;s likely just my friends/family from twitter/facebook

user41796
Hard to tell bots from humans, true

user15026
1:24 AM
I assume it is pity visits from my friends :P

user15026
(mostly because I am terribly hard on myself)

Fun fact: Hacker Rank's first warmup challenge has the code already written for you. All you have to do to pass is click the Submit button. Hacker Rank claims that the success rate for this challenge is 99.5 percent, which makes me wonder what the 0.5% did to fail the challenge.

user20683
@RobertHarvey got distracted and left the page

user15026
@WorldEngineer That would be me, most likely....

Also, my latest WTF: gaycoin.eu

user15026
1:28 AM
The bad grammar on that hurts me, among other things

user20683
@AshleyNunn Official currency of d-pad?

user15026
@WorldEngineer cracks up

user41796
@RobertHarvey At a minimum, they shouldn't be using straight models. :-D

Tsssh boom.

user41796
@RobertHarvey If you're going to flaunt it, then flaunt it already.

user20683
1:37 AM
@GlenH7 Don't make me break out the Sylvester

user15026

@WorldEngineer Will I need brain bleach if I Google that term?

user20683
For the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri see: Sly James Sylvester James, Jr. (September 6, 1947 – December 16, 1988), better known as Sylvester, was an American disco and soul singer-songwriter. Known for his flamboyant and androgynous appearance, he was often described as a drag queen, although he repeatedly rejected such a description. Responsible for a string of hit singles in the late 1970s, Sylvester became known in the United States under the moniker of the "Queen of Disco." Born in Watts, Los Angeles, Sylvester developed a love of singing through the gospel choirs of his Pentecostal church...

Ah, I got a different result on Urban Dictionary.
You don't want to know.

user15026
1:57 AM
@RobertHarvey That just makes me curious

The wonders (and perils) of Urban Dictionary are just a few keystrokes away.

technically coined by me on the forums of "The Hoffman Studios" podcast and submitted by another user whose handle I've long forgotten

Woo. 4.5 chapters to go before I can write the first of 2 exams I need for the A+ cert. That's pretty nifty.

user41796
2:53 PM
@WorldEngineer I have only read the first paragraph or so, but the premise behind this is brilliant!

3:11 PM
I'm fairly certain you can do this with any function, just prototype in one file compilation unit and define the array in another without the prototype (to prevent the error)

A: Who should our moderators be?

jhabbottI nominate GlenH7 He seems like a nice chap. Oh, yeah and he's clever and good at moderating and stuff too - I suppose that should come into it somewhere :P Edit from GlenH7: Thank you, and I accept the nomination. I'd be happy to serve as a pro-tem moderator for the site. Up until Enginee...

Engineering Beta ??
That can't go well.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa It's actually doing pretty well so far. Solid questions keep rolling in.

Q: Difference days of two dates

Marvin RetirvaThis code will compute the the total days between two dates using date chooser now my problem is the result gives me a negative number, the number is correct but it is in negative form, how to put it in positive form private void jButton3ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) { // ...

user41796
Answer rate is perhaps a bit low, but there have been some good ones put out there

4:37 PM
@GlenH7 Low for a private beta or low in general

user41796
Currently 83%

user41796
so low in general, but that's perhaps not fair given the breadth of the site and limited number of initial users.

So that site looks much more like "mechanical engineering" than just "engineering" as most problems relate to mechanics/dynamics/HVAC/fluid flow

user41796
@enderland so far, yes. But there's been a few electrical and aeronautical ones thrown in there

user41796
Shog is getting close to taking over Atwood on Meta.SE for repz. stackexchange.com/leagues/4/alltime/meta

4:48 PM
@Fuhrmanator: Of course. But the opposite is also true; many programmers get so devoted to software patterns that they stop thinking. Slavish adherence to doctrine stifles innovation. — Robert Harvey 40 secs ago

user41796
When the comment thread is longer than any of the posts..... <sigh>

I saw that complaint (I flagged both comments as meta meta), but when the discussion stays on-topic, well...
Since you keep pumping your question with edits to solicit discussion, I'm reluctantly casting the fifth close vote. If you can clean up the question so that it's an actual question again, I'll vote to reopen. — Robert Harvey 21 secs ago

5:37 PM
@RobertHarvey like I said, it's just a debate space for that fellow to validate his opinion, he doesn't care what others think or say, he just wants them to re-enforce what he already knows.

Kind of a waste of time for everyone.
Unfortunate.

@RobertHarvey Yes.
People lack the ability to question themselves...

6:00 PM
Self-reflection is hard.

user41796
@RobertHarvey I hate tearing myself open in order to allow the reflection to occur. Much easier with .NET objects.

Found another flaw in Chrome's "put everything in the address bar" metaphor. LINKTO: doesn't work properly.
For example: LinkTo: https://codechef_shared.s3.amazonaws.com/download/Solutions/2014/March/Tester/SS‌TORY.cpp
Returns results in Firefox, but not Chrome (Chrome strips off SSTORY.cpp)

Mãhãdcan somebody please help me how can i remove this link to get featured when ever some body shares the web link on fb then this smiley image get featured what can i do to remove this image to get featured please tell me what modification i have to do in the code :) thanks in advance here shared...

Above question was already on Stack Overflow - twice - links in my comment

6:36 PM
I wonder is fscheck can find the flaw here: math.stackexchange.com/questions/1122926/…
think I'll have to get that a poke

7:04 PM
@ratchetfreak lol what I got +2 rep twice
that can't be right
Why should I get +2 edit rep for editing the same post twice and getting it approved both times, that makes no sense
With below 2k rep it's so easy to get helpful flags on progs. Just flag everything with a negative score as off topic :)

@JimmyHoffa @RobertHarvey I discovered to my delight that Xamarin Studio will now boot and stay that way on my machine

Stay booted? You have to boot the thing? Are you running it in a VM?

user20683
@RobertHarvey launched

user20683
it would immediately close, not so much as a crash notice

Oh.
How did you fix it?

user20683
@RobertHarvey indeed, I suspect its because I finally had upgraded to Lion and then hadn't bothered to try till recently

This thing is crazy awesome

user20683
@psr @MichaelT No mumps or perl yet

user20683
no clojure either

@WorldEngineer The Mathematica answer is the best.

user20683
@durron597 aye

psr
7:34 PM
Lack of perl is surprising. The hard part about MUMPS is finding something you would consider a feature.

user20683
SQL is also missing

user20683
I might do that one just as an excuse to learn more SQL

user20683
Scratch that

user20683
T-SQL is there

I think you would need about 12 characters to do anything meaningful in SQL.

7:38 PM
@WorldEngineer ...I don't understand this thing

user20683
@JimmyHoffa you put up a quote about the language of your choice, some interesting fact. As you get upvotes, you add additional snippets of size = to the total upvotes

user20683
I want to see someone try Labview

@durron597 I'm fast with the accept :)

Or Assembly.

@ratchetfreak I just meant generally speaking getting multiple +2s for a single post doesn't make sense
Though because lifetime suggested edit rep is capped it doesn't really matter that much.

user20683
7:57 PM
In other news, did you know that COBOL has generics?

8:09 PM
sweet

psr
@WorldEngineer Isn't that kind of redundant with the algebraic data types and typeclasses?

user20683
@psr Maybe or Maybe not

8:59 PM
@WorldEngineer Isn't that a little like adding chandeliers to a Cadillac?

3 hours later…
11:32 PM
Who here knows math?

I know how to add.
Does that count?

Is a sequence monotonic if the distance between it's elements doesn't have a uniform distribution but the distribution has a distance which is a uniform distribution? Can the uniformity be hidden arbitrarily deep, or does it have to be the immediate distance?
...nevermind

Do you mean monotonically increasing?

@RobertHarvey yeah that thing. I don't know what I'm talking about :D

Rubber Duck: "Your welcome."

11:35 PM
this sequence is monotonic from what I understand: 9, 56, 143, 270. It's not a uniform distribution, but the distance between each member increases uniformly (distances are 47, 87, 127 -> increases by 40 each time)
I'm wondering if a sequence with the distances of 9, 56, 143, 270 would be considered monotonic even though that sequence doesn't have a uniform distribution but because it's distances do

In mathematics, a monotonic function (or monotone function) is a function between ordered sets that preserves the given order. This concept first arose in calculus, and was later generalized to the more abstract setting of order theory. == Monotonicity in calculus and analysis == In calculus, a function defined on a subset of the real numbers with real values is called monotonic if it is either entirely nonincreasing or nondecreasing. It is called monotonically increasing (also increasing or non-decreasing), if for all and such that one has , so preserves the order (see Figure 1). Likewise...
In other words, the slope of the curve at any point in a monotonically-increasing function is always positive or zero.
Never negative.

I think I inferred a very specialized case of that from something else I read... I have no idea what I'm talking about

No, I thought it meant the same thing you did.
That probably depends on the service. Don't these things come with instructions? — Robert Harvey 37 secs ago
