@ratchetfreak did you see the puns in one of the answers?

user55340

A: How do I draw a pair of buttocks?

gpapThis might get me suspended from the site butt I cannot resist. The shape you are looking for can probably be approximated (depending how anal you want to be about the outcome) by two assymetric probability distributions. The obvious choices would be a Poasson or a log normal distribution. I wil...

user55340
12:32 AM
btw, 'ello @Joe

Joe
haha, hola @MichaelT

user55340
(chat here can be active... though for most of us, its a window open on a second monitor while at work... outside the 9-5 work day for various timezones, it can be a bit quiet here. And since today is a holiday...)

Joe
@MichaelT Hi there, I posted the subject question about whether I should take an internship with NetApp or IBM - didn't even realize there was a live chat I could ask on..I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about your experience at NetApp?
I was offered a position with a tool development team but I definitely feel I would be beneficial to any company as a software developer/engineer. IBM is offering a true software engineering intern position though. You said you know some people that work/have worked at IBM. Thoughts?
subjective^^

user55340
I was in a department that bounced around a few times from division to division... initially internal business applications. Then it was Customer Support - Internal Technology... and then it was part of Information Technology with a dotted line to CS.

user55340
So, I was on one of those teams for internal tool development.

user55340
12:35 AM
I worked on now.netapp.com (the cs portal for customers) and the internal cs web pages, and a couple big tools (if you do go to Netapp, say you talked with "Shaggy" who worked on the Panic Message Back Trace Analyzer - someone might remember me)

user55340
(and if you get lucky - you might even work on something neat (see patent google.com/patents/US7769752 ))

Joe
Haha, awesome! Alright Shaggy, did you enjoy it?

user55340
I had a great time while I was there. I also had an excellent manager and team I worked with.

Joe
I'll be working under Bruce Eitzen... ring a bell?

user55340
@Joe not off hand. I was laid off as part of the general economic slump of '09 and that resulted in much of the internal development as part of IT then being outsourced. Other departments were able to hang on to their teams.

user55340
12:40 AM
So, if this is part of engineering or customer support - dunno... didn't work as closely with them.

user55340
Glancing at connections on Linked In, a number of people I worked with are still there (they were on managerial career trajectories), others have scattered to other places. I was commenting earlier that my old team lead back then is now a CTO.

user55340
(and an intern I worked with is a director at (Adult) Friend Finder)

user55340
And it is a good place to work at. There's a reason why they've routinely showed up in Fortune's 100 best companies to work for ( netapp.com/us/company/our-story/great-place-to-work/index.aspx )

user55340
(still find it rather ironic that the #1 in 2009 was within days of that layoff... but thats more a personal story than a company story)

Joe
I saw that! I was really excited, they're also #3 on Great Places to Work's list of Best Multinational Companies to work for.. I guess the hesitation I'm feeling is about being in a tool development team - maybe my assumption that a software engineering intern position is more prestigious, is off a bit?
The
The guys I spoke with on the phone seemed a tad upset to tell me they weren't actually software guys..

user55340
12:45 AM
For interns in the modern day, I'd ping @Ampt (who was an intern up until recently)

user55340
Honestly, we're all software guys. We might not be product guys... but the people that keep the company running efficiently is important so that the product types can do their job more efficiently.

user55340
The PMBTA (that thing I mentioned if you go there ask about) - its a tool that allowed sustaining engineering team to do their jobs much faster. Automating what would take them half an hour into typing a command... and providing that for automated tools too.

user55340
So what if its not one of the product engineers thinking about the aspects of copy on write filesystems and snapshots or how to get a tighter loop for a given part of IO. Its a problem that needed to be solved and one that I was able to do.

Joe
Very nice, that definitely clears things up and makes me more excited about the offer

user55340
At the end of the day, we're solving problems with writing code. Thats our job. Just as a carpenter solves problems with wood. Its a problem that needs to be solved. Take joy in solving those problems wherever you may find yourself.

user55340
12:52 AM
And I'd urge you to stop by chat again tomorrow during the "day" or Monday during the day to get more people with other perspectives.

user55340

user55340
The info for the room shows how active the room is for different days at different times.

user55340
Normally (non-holiday) it would still be rather active here as it isn't yet 5pm on the left coast (those times are UTC).

user55340
But our weekends are rather quiet.

user55340
But afternoon here, during the week? Yep... we're up and chatting.

Joe
12:54 AM
Definitely, this has been extremely helpful.
Left coast lol
I appreciate all of your input! That PMBTA looks really interesting as well, I'll be sure to bring up that I spoke with Shaggy about it

user55340
There are some east coasters, some midwesterners (I'm one of those), a guy who can see the Rockies and a few who see the ocean not too far away.

Joe
lol

user55340
(I wonder if they ever cleaned up that email alias of shaggy@netapp.com - it would bounce (internal mail alias), but that was me)

Joe
Haha, I'll be sure to check the DB

user55340
There were some groups where I was better known as Shaggy than as Michael. I was one of the few who had a mail alias that wasn't part of the name.

user55340
12:57 AM
(when I started at Netapp, my employee ID was 600 something... it was a smaller company then)

user55340
Oh, yea, and a Canadian.

user15026
grins you only remembered me when I came in the room? :p

user55340
You could do things for pure 'fun' then without any red tape. One facilities person... her dog had a valid company badge.

user15026
@michaelT wait what?

user55340
@AshleyNunn smaller tech company. Dogs as part of Silicon valley work culture wasn't unheard of (the day the malamute was in the office was rather amusing). She was in charge of badges, and got one for her dog.

user15026
1:00 AM
Makes sense to me. :)

user55340
So... malamute in the office... they're big dogs. You get a team of huskies to pull a sled... or one malamute.

user15026
Yeah, they're pretty massive

user55340

user55340
So... one guy had a malamute and brought him into the office. He had to go to a meeting and so had Sean look after the dog. Sean was a heavy 200 lbs. He tied the dog to the chair.

user55340
The chair has wheels. Well, you don't train dogs in English to avoid them hearing "go" and going. But this dog thought he heard the word for "go" when someone said something in another language.

user55340
1:03 AM
And, he started going. And nothing that Sean could do would stop this dog.

user55340
Sean is yelling "whoa, halt, stop, no, cease" as he's getting pulled down the hallway.

user55340
Goes past the conference room the other guy was in the meeting and he shakes his head and goes out and says "stop" in the appropriate language.

user55340
but yea, dogs in the office were not uncommon then.

user55340
> Zynga's got its "barking lot'' just outside the main lobby in San Francisco. Amazon offers dog biscuits at the receptionist's desk and dog-friendly water fountains around its Seattle campus. And dozens of companies in the Bay Area and beyond are listed on dog-friendly websites in case you -- and your four-legged companion -- want to check out the amenities offered by your prospective employers.

user55340
1:11 AM
Anyways... sitting back for thanksgiving with a glass of cranberry + apple wine. Its a subtle cranberry flavor (even the apple is subtle). If you didn't know, you'd think it was a traditional grape wine with notes of cranberry and apple instead of the other way around.

user55340
@enderland btw, how was that grape salad? (background)

user55340
(side bit - debating if I could/should make a run over to Minnesota for some wine my parents really liked - carloscreekwinery.com - the "Hot Dish Red" ccwbottleshop.com/collections/minnesota-nice/products/… )

user15026
@MichaelT I'd not do well with a company that allowed dogs - they make me uncomfortable. Might just be I've rarely met a well trained dog, though

user55340
@AshleyNunn My manager at SGI (and amusingly was also my manager for a little bit at Netapp) had a dog. He'd bring her in at SGI and put a child gate at his cube which was enough to keep her from wandering around. Very friendly and didn't make a noise (important in a call center). She wasn't a small dog either.

user55340
1:26 AM
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed developed in Southern Africa. Its European forebears can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi. In the earlier parts of its history, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also been known as Van Rooyen's Lion Dog, the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog—Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona—because of its ability to keep a lion at bay while awaiting its master to make the kill. The original breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes, in Bulawayo...

user15026
Yeah, I am starting to think most people I know just don't have well trained dogs, and that's why I don't like them. (I know a lot of farm people with farm dogs, who are allowed to basically run around and do whatever)

@Joe In my experience, your internship can have little reflection on what working for the actual company is like. In some places, interns are treated just like another full time staff member, with as much say and responsibilities as such, in others, they're doing predefined, cookie cutter work for a company so that the company can say they have an internship program. I would ask your boss what kind of responsibilities and tasks you would have, and how much input you'll get on a daily basis.
your mileage may vary, of course.

user15026
@MichaelT It scares me that people actually theoretically eat that salad

I've got friends who worked for all sorts of companies doing all sorts of things. it's a grab bag for sure.

user55340
@AshleyNunn And Wisconsin, which makes 57% of the nation's cranberries didn't get a cranberry dish? or something with cheese? shrug

user15026
1:28 AM
@MichaelT I think whoever made that article just threw darts at pictures of food to decide

user15026
thats the only way it makes sense

user55340
@AshleyNunn Having a dog of reasonable size in the city of reasonable size typically means the dog is well socialized and trained.

user55340
One can't do the "let the dog run" when its a street right there.

user15026
Makes sense to me ;)

user15026
Makes sense to me :)

1:30 AM
welp, with that wink, I'm out.

user55340
You'll note that the malamute was very well trained. Just don't speak whatever language she was trained in around her.

user15026
Most people I know have cats

Hope ya'll are having a happy thanksgiving.

user15026
Okay, its weird that I tried to edit that wink out and it just reposted the message....

@AshleyNunn ... suuuure.

user15026
1:31 AM
@Ampt I am having a happy thursday :P

user15026
@Ampt I am innocent, I promise

@AshleyNunn No. you are America's hat. You celebrate by association.

user15026
@Ampt I am curled up in bed eating leftover fries. Does that count?

user55340
Anyways... if I get up at a reasonable time tomorrow, I'll drive out to the middle of no-where in northwestern Minnesota (on the way to Fargo) and get some wine for my parents.

user55340
Oh... Patrick Rothfuss is having a reading in Madison Saturday night.

user55340
1:34 AM
> In a last-minute event announced by the Madison Central Library and A Room of One’s Own, Rothfuss will read from his new book Saturday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. on the third floor of the library, 201 W. Mifflin St. He'll also sell calendars to raise money for his charity Worldbuilders, which donates money to Heifer International to help combat hunger and poverty worldwide.

user15026
Awesome. :)

@MichaelT do you take requests?

user55340
@Ampt You want me to buy you some $20 wine from Minnesota?

@AshleyNunn Are you eating? YES! You're celebrating thanksgiving : No :( this isn't a proper celebration.
@MichaelT what kind do they have?
I'm looking to expand my pallate, and wine makes good christmas gifts

user55340
Note - you can order it online apparently.

user55340
Bit disappointed that the "Peach Street" is sold out... though I'd be most curious to compare their Cranberry Apple with the Cranberry Apple I just had from Tenbra Ridge.

I'm more into the fruty stuff at the moment

user55340
I still think you need to make a drive up to Caederburg and try their wines.

Dry stuff just hasn't quite impressed me
I do.

user55340
1:41 AM
@Ampt Look for wineries that advertise / make "country wines"

We like Rieslings at the moment

user55340
Riesling is one of my favorite traditional wines.

Clothes are expensive...
sorry, apropros of nothing
saw an advertisement on fb for a box-club where you sign up and they ship clothes to you based on your style. I was like awesome, that sounds like something a lazy person like I would do

user55340
If you can make it up to Door county on the other hand... you might like store.dcwine.com/winery

the prices are crazy though. like 150 bucks for a pair of jeans or 200 for a sweatshirt

user55340
> Enjoy a signature red and white wine for yourself or as a two pack gift set. Peninsula Red, a medium bodied table red with a first impression of cherry and Peninsula White, a Seyval Blanc with 15% apple, perfect for Riesling fans, both showcased in a sophisticated Door County bottle and delivered in a classy fit box (glasses not included).

interesting...
I'll look into it for sure, thanks!
anywhom, french silk pie beckons. have a good night guys.

user55340
Haven't tried this one @Ampt - glance at it when you have time: hellovino.com

user55340
The 'wine by taste preference' might be useful.

user55340
I still recommend going to a winery and having a tasting there. You need to see what the range of wines is like.

@Ampt O.o

Joe
2:08 AM
@Ampt awesome, thanks for the input! I'll definitely take your advice then and ask them next chance I get

2:29 AM
Happy thanksgiving everyone. I'm fuckin' beat, serving 12 people and trying to keep 7 kids from destroying the place is exhausting\
Hope you all enjoyed your thanksgivings

Apparently, I've "helped" 132k people on MSE. Great, yet another meaningless metric for people to obsess over.
16
Q: What is "People helped" and why does it exist at all?

toheczI wonder what is "People helped" (PH) stat supposed to signify. From what I read in Profile Page Makeover, Part 3: the Prototype returns, it stands for cumulative number of views on some (all) of my posts. I would like to know why we consider views as such a significant thing to put it on the ver...

hooray for 2 days off

@JimmyHoffa you don't get sunday off?

@Ampt ? I do, but that's not the middle of the week
balls, I got a new keyboard that was the cheapest backlit keyboard I could find and when I type fast it transposes letters every now and then...lovely cheap keyboard... oh well

4:33 PM
@JimmyHoffa oh I thought you were talking about the 4 day weekend. I could see why you may not count herding cats kids as a day off, but then you would still have 3 more

oh today's friday not thursday!
sweet! 4 day weekend!
perusing steam's sale, sanctum 2 for $5...that looks interesting

oh sanctum is pretty fun. I imagine it's more fun with friends
you ever play?
@YannisRizos My Flag Weight People Helped is higher than yours! Neener neener!! :P

nope, trying to find online references to whether it's MP is still alive

KSP is on there
and if you haven't played bioshock infinite, you should probably do that
beyond earth for 35... interesting
Although I never really liked any of those kinds of games

I tried the first bioshock, seemed interesting but struck me as a "Look, we threw a bunch of monsters together for you to run around and kill with strange weapons!" felt very 90s throw-back to a style that could never be done better than Blood 2 did

4:39 PM
really? You didn't like it?
I thought the story was compelling and the mechanics fun
and the environment was A++++++

I read bioshock infinite and had no idea how it could be connected to the strange horror-themed-kill-em-all game of Bioshock 1 which made me less interested sounding like they were just throwing up more arbitrary random shit just like Bioshock appeared to be\

the world building in both games is top notch
if that's not something that strikes your fancy
you may want to stay away

world building? Perhaps I didn't get that far, it just seemed like an FPS on rails

@JimmyHoffa how far did you get?

don't remember, I clearly recall killing some bitches in a dirty nasty bathroom and then wandering around on rafters trying to ill stuff below me before dropping down to get further
was a long time ago. I keep looking at bioshock though because everyone raves about it

4:43 PM
the original and infinite are connected
so there may be some parts that don't make sense

just because they both happen in that same bizarre lovecraft-meets-steampunk place?

mmm I can't say without giving it away

meh. Did you ever play blood or blood 2?

no
back in 98 I was playing starcraft and runescape
@JimmyHoffa I take it you didn't like the lovecraft-meets-steampunk? I thought it was fantastic
I loved how it was so worn down, just barely functioning

eh nah, it seemed to mash-up like they just threw too many various artistic ideas in a blender
that and the gameplay seemed again, just 90s throwback: Go! Kill! Find strange guns! Kill!

4:47 PM
@JimmyHoffa well if it makes you feel better, you don't have to have played the first to play infinite, and the world is very, very different in infinite. (you still have to go kill people with strange guns)

Am I wrong on that account? Was there more to the gameplay than I ran into?

nope. you don't have allies or anything.
you are the lone gunman
fighting a large variety of enemies
did you ever get to plasmids?

not sure

where you can set people on fire
or electrocute them?

oh yes

4:51 PM
those are fun
and you can upgrade those as well

yeah I think I recall upgrading that

maybe you just hate fun

haha nah, I just played way too many of that type of game in the 90s, it seems like a good variant on it but not new enough
hey eye divine cybermancy for .99 can't go wrong there, that's a mildly bland FPS/RPG with full campaign co-op
some reviews actually say it's decent hmm, looks very deus ex

still have to play that one

deus ex??
I had one sitting in my gift inventory from some bundle I figured I'd never give to anyone because, who hasn't played that? Craziness.

6:52 PM
@Ampt did you see that big post by IntelliJ on HDPI support, the issues, and the eta?

8:36 PM
@MichaelT yes, yes, and yes. Not thrilled with the "not our fault" mentality there.

user55340
@Ampt just noting that they do have an update on it (and haven't forgotten about it).

I agree, it's definitely a step forward, but their product, in my opinion, is unusable in this state
sure, it's not a crash or startup issues, but with people getting higher and higher resolution screens, it looks worse and worse

9:09 PM
@YannisRizos I have helped literally no one on Meta.SE. Do I get some sort of medal for that?

9:20 PM
@Ampt ooh, I need that medal too!

@Ampt yeah. Your bounty apparently isn't good enough to count as help

9:34 PM
where do you see that help thinger?

@JimmyHoffa tab at the top of the profile.
Also, thanks for the game!

aye, everybody else in the world's already played it so it's not like there'd be anyone else to give it to

Now I owe you one. I'll find something for you mwahahaha
