MathOverflow is used as the source for an online comic: sandraandwoo.com/2014/11/24/0636-hodge-theater

7:11 AM
@JimmyHoffa I'd like to see those couple hundred lines of code.
Better yet, give me a bit of guidance, and i'll write them for you.

8 hours later…
2:59 PM
Nothing like being invited to a meeting you know nothing about, with an invite that is literally blank... sigh

can't you just not go

well it's a one on one meeting with someone a few levels above me so I can't just ignore it unfortunately

and you can't ask what it is about?

I did
no response
and the meeting is in an hour
he invited me at 9:37 last night
so I only saw it like an hour ago

tell him you had a prior engagement?

3:06 PM
Nothing on my calendar, and by default everyone in the domain can see availability on the calendar... I'm just going to have to go and see what he wants

4:06 PM
aaand it got cancelled. fantastic

@RobertHarvey the crux of what's necessary for IoC is dotnetfiddle.net/RW35EJ
You could put all kinds of widgets on top of that to help out and simplify the use for your consumers, adding in a fall-back that will grep a config file for the types and reflect and cache them et al, but something like that's what, another 50 lines? People write tons of fuckin code for what can be done simply- and should be done simply. They try to provide endless features, hell add predicates and woo another 20 lines, but instead people blow there code out as thick as they can
realistically that is all you need. It cedes control to your consumers, while letting them register all their dependencies in a single place, singletons will get lazy loaded, it doesn't allow cycles in the dep graph but there shouldn't be any anyway, and a cycle checker would be easy enough
I could make it non-static and return new instances each time so you have an instance graph rather than a global graph that people will shoot themselves in the foot with using it as a dependency container instead of a top-level graph constructor
it doesn't have property injection but big deal, people demand because they can do something they should? Nonsense, people should stick to a minimum set for simplicity and they'll stop having thousands of lines of code just to do the same things in 5 different ways that end up having to be maintained
</rant>

You're advocating the use of singletons?
Maybe you should start this holiday a day early... sounds like you could use it.

@Ampt in real software everyone always has singletons
2
it would be nice to avoid them, but guess what? It takes a metric fuck ton of resources to construct WCF clients in .NET, so if you don't make them singleton enjoy your resource drainage. Whenever you hear of a <blank> pool -> It's a singleton. some global pool of <blank> resources with a single entry point to request one of them
ideally you have as few as possible, but at the end of the day you're going to have a hand full of singletons and you'd better put transactional mutexes all over in them to ensure nobody's jacking them up
everytime you write new SqlDbConnection(someConnectionString); in .NET, you're calling a singleton and asking it to give you one of it's member connections
well, give or construct

4:23 PM
... Slow day in the office?

@Ampt ...is it fast there the day before thanksgiving?

@JimmyHoffa No, you've just almost written a page's worth of... whatever that is on your own hahaha

you mean the rant or the code? heh the code took much less time and energy ;P

4:42 PM
there, now it's instance based rather than global statics
you can create all the containers you want and the concurrent dictionary will have contention per type

fiddle.net was taken?

@Ampt I suspect so?

LOL
I can imagine that meeting.
"What do you mean it's taken by some guy who likes fiddles... Don't we own this whole domain?!"
@JimmyHoffa is that thread safe?
what if two threads try and make a singleton at the same time?
ah yes
_dependencyGraph = new ConcurrentDictionary
I'm assuming the thread safety is built into the concurrent dictionary

@Ampt concurrentdictionary will handle that alternatively the second one will win but - you shouldn't be registering two singletons anyway. One way or another if you register the same type twice the second registration will overwrite. I could do checks and throw exceptions saying "You already registered that!" but honestly, if folks want to change their singleton once in a while that's up to them
It's all this "Consumers should only use my library in this exact way!" crap that makes libraries bloated

It's all "Devs will handle it" that makes them need to be :P

4:56 PM
there's an obvious way to use that library, if you use it in other ways than is obvious it's on you, it's got as much safety as it can and takes the naive approach in all scenarios so if you can't figure out the obvious behaviour it's following than ?? Trying to save devs from themselves with complex contraptions just causes them to create more complex contraptions to misbehave
With a simple library they'll break it with simple contraptions that they can fix easily or they'll not break it at all
err rather contention will be per container not per type
lovely how the compiler creates a compile-time dictionary for you whenever you want the key to be a type
so it doesn't auto-discover the parameters necessary for construction, boo hoo. If you're writing those registration lines all over your code base you're doing something wrong, and if there's 30 or 100 of them all in one file, big deal you have to call `Dependency<Type>.Get()` in the constructor params. Hell put them into properties in your lambda if you want, voila consumers can have property injection if they want. Why you want your library to decide everything for you rather than simply provide facilities that you get to decide what to do with I don't understand. Taking decisions away fr
...I said </rant> a while ago so I guess now I'll just say...apparently I'm in a ranty mood today...welcome to The Whiteboard

Surely there's a way for Scrum to factor in days off. — Robert Harvey 18 mins ago

@enderland yep, it starts by killing puppies and sacrificing lambs to the egyptian god of crocodiles

5:12 PM
@enderland No, scrum is terrible and the root of all evil. duh.

@enderland truth be told my understanding is you estimate capacity at each sprint planning and account for that stuff: "This week Joe's out for 3 days, our capacity goes down X%, so our historical velocity is Y and our capacity this sprint will be X% of Y, so don't grab more story points than that"

Yeah. you estimate everything in "ideal man-days" or "ideal man-hours". If you have 5 developers who work for a week, you've got 200 man hours or 25 man days to spend. if someone takes a vacation for a day, you drop to 192 and 24 respectively.
plan your sprint accordingly
obviously the conversion from ideal-> real is your biggest source of loss, so your accurates aren't super tight to begin with

5:17 PM

@RobertHarvey Not sure if you were being patronizing or not, but there's my answer either way...

like... this is the first time ever that I think a woman at work is coming on to me

yoooo-ma, y-o-m-a, yooo-ma
yo-yo-yo-yooooma

user55340
@maple_shaft yo yo ma ma?

lol
we have been friendly, texting each other about various stuff, she is married
she has been acting weird lately and complaining about her husband
now she sent me a text saying a fortune cookie told her a new romance is in her future
not sure how to respond

5:20 PM
alls you can do is ignore it same as anywhere else, act cold when she talks of such personal topics and friendly otherwise
what else do you do? Again, don't punch her.

user55340
@maple_shaft this is clearly a workplace question (co-worker? not the boss's wife? well... maybe not as clear cut then)

I just sent her a text joking that this guy in the office she hates has the hots for her
try to disarm her with humor

@MichaelT no, she's not farting in her cubicle, not WP

@JimmyHoffa lol

user55340
@JimmyHoffa farting in the cube was Programmers.SE. Workplace may have to also deal with open floor plans.

5:24 PM
She used to be a groupie for Nine Inch Nails
i wonder what kind of demented things they made her do
No...nooo... get it out of my head
bad

user55340
IIRC, Trent was an EE back in the day.

I met his grand parents, his chid hood home is an hour from me

user55340
> Reznor graduated in 1983 and enrolled at Allegheny College, where he studied computer engineering.

I bet he f----- her like an animal
shut up BRAIN!!!
STOP

@MichaelT OMG if you don't post this on TWP...

5:28 PM
I don't want my wife to catch wind

make an alt account
cmon man, don't leave me hanging here

What is a good butt plug for a programmer?
STOP ITT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

user55340
@maple_shaft migrate to software recommendations.

See, now you're thinking like TWP

lol

5:30 PM
(Sorry @enderland)
haha

well I am not going to lie, I am feeling some tension between us
I am going to have to avoid being alone with her

Have you considered farting in your cubical to ward her off?

it is a crazy rush when you know another woman wants you.

user55340
@maple_shaft create a new account on TWO (registered - so you can get back to it if you need to). Then, in a year or two, if you are comfortable with the past, you could merge the accounts.

@MichaelT That is essentially cheating on StackExchange
if I do that, then what prevents me from cheating in other committments in my life?
I have to prove to myself that I have the willpower to resist temptation

user55340
5:34 PM
@maple_shaft cheating would be if you have the accounts interact - voting on each other. There are many good reasons to have separate accounts when anonymity is necessary.

Seriously. Take it from a Sock Puppet.
3

@Ampt well played

@JimmyHoffa Thanks.

user55340
Academia regularly (appears to) has people posting questions from other throw away accounts to make sure the questions do not impact other issues ("5 years ago, I falsified some data in an paper... someone is refuting that now.") - yea, you messed up, you did wrong, but stating that publicly here, would cause even more problems. in this situation, you haven't messed you at all.

Q: Anonymous questions

(chase the duplicates to see the advice)

user55340
> Jeff has explained elsewhere that posting anonymously is permitted by design. Here's one post where a user asked about how to log out of an anonymous account (which is now easier) is here:

user55340
The 'merge accounts later' is the "sufficient time has passed - this being associated with me will no longer have a negative impact on my family or career"

People who feel the need to post anonymously don't need our advice... They need to take an ethics class.

I know I really shouldn't be pushing your buttons in this... fragile situation... but do it for the rep @maple_shaft.
@RobertHarvey ethics, as most things, are relative.

She is either clueless or she is testing me

5:40 PM
@Ampt Yeah, but if the question is about how to get a check up from the neck up, it's probably off-topic anyway.

I wouldn't cheat on my wife, but why am I so fascinated by this?
My ego?

user55340
@RobertHarvey Hypothetical classic TWP... Boss's wife is flirting with you. Boss and your wife are aware of TWP. Posting there non-anonymous would cause problems that aren't related to your ethical choices (yet). Sure, taking an ethics class would be great, but it addresses the general high level approaches rather than "how do I get the boss's wife to stop flirting with me now"

I am my biggest fan

user55340
Ego is nice. Its the same as getting recruiter emails while employed.

@MichaelT depends on the email. I get recruiter emails that read like the nigerian prince scam

5:43 PM
@MichaelT Yeah or a random LinkedIn recommendation

user55340
Incidentally, its very much the same... its easier to get those while you are employed than unemployed... and men get more attention from women when the men have a kid (or puppy?) with them. It shows that they are satisfactory in what they are currently doing and likely a good candidate.

@MattGiltaji Plz send us your codes so that we may unlock great treasure. you will be in the payment of course.

@MichaelT Men with kids are fertile and loyal
ironically loyalty makes them harder to obtain
poor women

@Ampt and hardcode my social security number too, as test data? sure, why not

@MattGiltaji many thanks.

user55340
5:45 PM
@maple_shaft which, depending on what you want is ideal. If you are after kids, the fertile and loyal is a good quality (until you pull them away and that 'loyalty' bit becomes a question). If you just want to flirt, the loyal likely means they are "safe" and unlikely to do anything.

@MichaelT Glad I'm not a moderator on that site.

@MichaelT THere is emotional cheating too
I am not handing flirt cookies to this woman trust me

@MichaelT it may also depend on the definition of flirt. Some people just have a much friendlier interaction style that comes off as flirty even if they don't intend to convey any sort of romantic meaning

@maple_shaft she's handing them to you.

user55340
@RobertHarvey I'll also point to academia being a fun one... just about like TWP but questions about publications and students are on topic too.

5:47 PM
@Ampt except I don't know if they are real cookies

Are ethics questions on-topic on Academia?

my guideline is always "if you think it's cheating, it's cheating." You start to rationalize it, and you've gone too far.

user55340
@maple_shaft do not take candy hearts into the office in a few months.

but I want more of them out of curiousity

user55340
(unless you get them from Despair)

5:47 PM
@maple_shaft The cookies are a lie!

5:49 PM
@maple_shaft Too much coffee, not enough to do. (at least not enough that's interesting and needs to get done right now)

But I only get one once in awhile now.
So is Scrum really just a convoluted motivational technique?
Get people to scurry around like hamsters on a spinning wheel?

user55340
Sounds about right.

sigh not this again.
I warn you all, I'm rather bored and have an unlimited supply of coffee, and I'm not afraid to use it.

@RobertHarvey were you asking about that code honestly?

Scrum feels like micromanagement to me personally
we have all been hoodwinked

user55340
5:51 PM
There are good ideas in scrum. There is also the 'constant sprint' which some take too literally and suggest doing constant sprits to run a marathon.

... then it isnt a sprint now is it

@maple_shaft often times yes. I don't particularly mind it if the person doing the micromanaging chooses a liesurely pace of it-> I will micromanage that you do these things in the next 2 weeks, but you'll have plenty of time to do them so whatever, just get them done
but that's not often the case
I've been in that situation before though

user55340
@maple_shaft we'll do 2 week sprints for 26 weeks to get the project done in a year!

@JimmyHoffa I was honestly asking you about that code. I feel quite the same way you do about developers overtaking the plumbing, and I am encouraged that there are other people out there like me who think simpler is better.
Or at least, more straightforward is better.

@maple_shaft You have poor management. That'll be $.05. NEXT!

5:55 PM
@RobertHarvey ah; well we are the minority at that... half the problem too is people do stuff like an IoC library, might start with what I did there, but then they make some other utilities and plumb them altogether so you can't get one piece without the other 8. If I ever go write CF# I'll just release the each piece standalone like the above
@Ampt at least his management puts notes in the meeting requests they send him :P

@JimmyHoffa I think it is because waterfall ppl have the impression that Agile is wild west cowboy no documentation and chaos so Scrum tries SO HARD to prove that wrong that it ends up being a micromanaging mess

@JimmyHoffa Not my direct management... some other project that wanted me on theirs. Day late and a dollar short.

@maple_shaft meh, I'm doing "scrum" without sprints, sprint planning, not really a backlog... I think my boss believes scrum is wild-west-no-process so he's given us...quite literally...no process...
which is fine, because we were already working with no process so new thing same as old thing...

@JimmyHoffa Your boss doesn't know what he's doing. That'll be $.05. NEXT!

we are constantly backlog grooming, revisiting things, trying to break stories up when I insist that there is no measurable business value to split it up anymore

5:57 PM
@Ampt if we're charging for what we're doing here I think you owe me a solid grand for that IoC container you parsed through

my PM is like, "a user story shouldnt be more than 8 points, if it is then it is an epic and needs split

@maple_shaft bike shed's should be blue, it's a good color in contrast to the red the bikes should be (for visibility reasons of course)

and I ma like, "No... this will literally just take a LOT of work

user55340

5:58 PM
@maple_shaft haha so your PM is telling you "Work should be small, medium, large, or xl, otherwise break it down because I can't handle any metrics more complex than t-shirt sizes"

"But then it is at risk in a two week sprint

@maple_shaft Tell your PM to quit favoring the process over results.

"Yeah... sorry"

@Ampt psh you misunderstand the chain of authoritah, it will be respected!

@Ampt put the coffee down damnit.. you used your allotment of witty retorts today

5:59 PM

b back later
meeting

@maple_shaft We have a 4 day weekend coming up. I've got extra to spend before logging off

user55340

@maple_shaft Tell your new best friend hi for us!
@MichaelT I thought about using the "You're trapped in here with me" video when threatening my coffee fueled rampage but... I didn't realize we were going to do videos today.

user55340
6:01 PM

OTOH, if you need context for firefly videos, you should just get out from under that rock you're living under.
it takes an afternoon to watch the full thing + the movie.

user55340
Btw, has anyone not seen Firefly?

I would guess @GlenH7
who is noticeably absent today.
That traitor is probably using his management provided vacation days!
We all agreed we were going to hold out for better treatment! You can't cave in!
Wow amazon is BOMBING with their fire phone

user55340
I'll point to youtube.com/channel/UCbUa-hkLxJ42Y4OrO_j5qMA if you want to kill an afternoon (recently uploaded - only 3 digit views)

I just ordered a new kindle fire HD 7 the other day for my kid's xmas this year... should arrive this week

6:06 PM
@JimmyHoffa should have just gotten the phone... $199 + includes 1 year of amazon prime

seems like a great idea for a device. has accounts it says so I should be able to setup myself some usefulness and control what he's able to run on it which other android devices are horrible at
@Ampt is that without a contract?

@JimmyHoffa yes.
they are doing that badly
they're dumping them

user55340
Sometimes amazon oneboxen are just too big.

@Ampt hey i was reading that while being lazy and not clicking through

wow suppose I should have... do need a new phone and all... but meh, this is for my kid not for me. The fire hd 7 is cheaper than that and I don't really have use for prime (already have netflix and hulu)
he'll enjoy the tablet more than he would have the phone

6:17 PM
wooooo! unofficial offer :)
3

@JimmyHoffa Agreed. I would love to get a tablet like the nvidia shield, but my backpack is already overloaded as it is..
@enderland Congratulations!!

What's an unofficial offer? Is that like sorta pregnant?

@enderland awesome, grats!

@Ampt Not sure the work is going to be OMG THE BEST THING EVER but it's definitely a step in the direction I want to take internally...
@RobertHarvey an "ok now I need to make the HR process work to actually give you an offer"

@ampt: That's a contingent offer.

6:25 PM
I'm optimistic, but a "I'm going to work with against HR to get things in motion" is a positive in my books right now

@enderland a good one, or is it that MUMPS spot?

@JimmyHoffa MUMPS :P

heh oh well, it puts your legs under you, even if you'll never get hired to do anything else in the industry again

I think it's going to give me a lot of flexibility in my time to learn/grow professionally, and even though it's no where near a cool technology I think it'll still be beneficial for me long term

@enderland yes it will be, but it will be detrimental to your resume. All learning is good learning, but some jobs are career enders

6:32 PM
@JimmyHoffa Eh. I'm young at this point and a single job will not dead-end my career (especailly since I work in a large company and having good people skills in the IT side basically is going to guarantee me promotions if I stay with my company)

@enderland oh it's in that company? Nice. Yeah your history will be referenced then when looked at for future transfers so the ABAP won't stop people from knowing you can do more

@JimmyHoffa yeah it's internal. And is about 90% going to let me work from home

awesome

some travel required to the HQ (liek 3-4 days a month) but that's a heck of a lot less than my 45 min each way commute anyways

they'd let you work in Sweden if you were willing to write ABAP for them, nobody wants that job heh

6:35 PM
I cant relocate in 2015 due to family stuff, after that I will relocate but for the next year I can't

you'll always be able to find work, good high paying work no less after a couple years working in ABAP because it's so ingrained in so many workplaces, and nearly no one knows it
same reason psr is still working in MUMPS
I've known some cold fusion guys "suffering" from that problem

Yeah. the team also does a fair bit with java web stuff related to it as well, so I also figure worst case is I learn how to do that sort of thing on the front end
And then have an easy "out"

aye, good for you! Don't burn the place down!

Honestly it's nice to feel some traction too. I'm good at the "politics" side of work too, I expect if I desire a management type position it'll be a gravy train to get there (if I want to sell my soul)

6:51 PM
man why do I love spicy food so much
it burns... so bad
@MichaelT I'll let you know in 12 hours.

user55340
@Ampt hmm... 1am. Not a good sign. I'll hope, for your sake, that its closer to 6.

@MichaelT Do you know how much coffee I've had today?
even my apostrophes are jittering out

@Ampt ALL OF IT
2

@Ampt is this your pre-thanksgiving diet? Trying to burn every spare calorie in advance of the many additional calorites you'll have tomorrow?

6:54 PM
@JimmyHoffa I had a coldfusion job in college... about half of the hits on my resume come from that

@MattGiltaji yeah, it's not because tons of people are using it so much as nobody fuckin knows it anymore. I still get endless reams of hits on build engineering stuff because all of the MSBuild and CI work I've done for the same reason

yeah its a terrible language, there's a reason no one knows it anymore

@JimmyHoffa This is my "No one else is in the office to judge me so I'm drinking every last drop of coffee I can" diet

admittedly in a previous life I would handily put away 4 to 5 cups (16oz) of coffee by noon every day
now I tend to have one in the morning just to tide my appetite until lunch, two if I get in early

anyone have a good, cheap, laptop recommendation?
My dad needs one but all he does is surf the web
I'd get him a chromebook but... my father does not deal well with change

6:59 PM
@Ampt black friday deals

and I've just started getting him to figure out how to use excel without my help
@JimmyHoffa yeah but how do I know which one is crap and which one isn't
I'm no good at comparing turds

@Ampt ...if it's just for browsing the web and using excel, he's not going to do anything to cause it to fall down short of accruing viruses, so there will be no difference between one and another

@JimmyHoffa this is a valid point...

Buy him a fire phone, it'll do all that

lol

7:04 PM
check newegg's black friday deals for cheapest laptop. cheapest
or tigerdirect

ugh.. newegg and I are on a break.
I think their return policy is ridiculous and their customer support lacking

user55340
@Ampt You need to go to Fry's. There's one down your way.

I might just get him a 250 dollar dell and shove an SSD in it

@MichaelT he's not looking to buy a three thousand dollar mac :P
aka A mac

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Ever been to Fry's?

7:06 PM
@MichaelT nah, I just know people go googoo over the place so I assume they upcharge the fuck out of everything because they have people in their marketing thrall
anywhere that has that much marketing hoodoo over people is not to be trusted in my book

user55340
@JimmyHoffa They've got paper thin margins on their products to the point of having a door checker being important.

Door checker?

receipt checker; reduces breakage

yeah Fry's is awesome

n/m I've been using breakage wrong for a while now...

7:08 PM
@JimmyHoffa i think shrinkage is the proper term there

user55340
@Ampt That's a nice way of saying it. Also called Door Nazi.

ah yes @MattGiltaji thankyou

user55340
They look at your receipt, and at the stuff you are taking out of the store and making sure the two agree.

Ah, ok. They have that at the Tigerdirect store too

@Ampt TigerDirect store ??
must be an old CompUsa

7:11 PM
@JimmyHoffa they have physical stores now I guess.

thought TigerDirect closed them all when they bought them
@Ampt they bought CompUSA years ago, guess they didn't close all the retail outlets

It's ok... kind of hard to find stuff.

they closed the vast majority of them though

but they have tons of stuff available
I'm not even sure it's worth putting an SSD in the damn thing...

@Ampt it wouldn't be

7:15 PM
well it would make it seem a lot faster

startup, shutdown, that kind of thing
ok, I want to get him something better than the one he has now

what difference does how it seems or is even matter? If he's not using it a ton, he can't wait 60 seconds for it to startup/etc?
ah

he has a laptop. it's just old as dirt and slow
and the headphone jack is broken

I see, does he use it as a laptop or a desktop?

7:17 PM
laptop
he doesn't take it anywhere
but he usses it on the couch
man my temptation to curl up under my desk and take a nap is overwhelming

@Ampt haha yes, this is what 6 cups of coffee in the morning does to you after noon

8:20 PM
someone just delivered beer to my desk via roller blades
IDK what the occasion is, but I like it.

@Ampt Just because I've been noticeably absent today doesn't justify a revenge down voting spree earlier in the day... Just saying. What's odd is I got 1 up vote and 4 down votes, all at the same proximity in time, and all against questions. No answers.

@GlenH7 that'll teach you to leave me
I was going through the stages of grief.

user41796
@Ampt You should know I'll always be there for you

user41796
But with that said, I gotta run again.... :-(

LIES!
have a good thanksgiving

Q: How do I draw a pair of buttocks?

Simpleton JackI'm trying to develop a function which 3D plot would have a buttocks like shape. Several days of searching the web and a dozen my of own attempts to solve the issue have brought nothing but two pitiful formulas below. They have some resemblance to the shape I want, though not quie. Could you h...

A: How do I draw a pair of buttocks?

gpapThis might get me suspended from the site butt I cannot resist. The shape you are looking for can probably be approximated (depending how anal you want to be about the outcome) by two assymetric probability distributions. The obvious choices would be a Poasson or a log normal distribution. I wil...

@Ampt you genuinely might ponder a tablet with keyboard case for your pop. Would be plenty fast
have a look at the venu 8 pro there for $200 for instance. Windows 8.1 tablet
will do all the chrome and ms office y'want

Eh, he uses it as a laptop most often

yes, and with a little keyboard attached on a case for $40 more you've got a $240 laptop with a touchscreen running windows 8.1

@JimmyHoffa does the keyboard have a hinge or does it just kind of flop around

@Ampt those cases usually have a folding support piece to hold the tablet up

I'll think about it. I'm worried the screen will be too small

@Ampt search google for "Fractal Orgy" when you get home.

probably best off just getting something off tigerdirect or otherwise

@JimmyHoffa First thing they want is your email address.

@RobertHarvey second thing they want is your soul?

Exactly.
So I'm thinking about setting up a dual-boot on my new computer. Windows 7 and OSX Yosemite.

@RobertHarvey but then you remembered, your mouse has multiple buttons

Noooooo!

user20683

@RobertHarvey I use a multibutton mouse, works just fine

user20683
Mac OS X is still BSD flavored UNIX down there somewhere

I want to run XCode with it. Hopefully there won't be any problems.

This question was put on hold as too broad while currently being published thru Facebook ? — Zuul 3 hours ago
^^^ apparently SE Facebook bot is still somewhat dumb, as opposed to SE Twitter which blocks questions having close votes

@user973810: The only winners in such a battle would be Stan Lee and J.K. Rowling. The image of them bathing in money and rubbing comics and novels on their naked bodies is one I wish I hadn't thought of. — James Sheridan 2 days ago

Q: Avoid sharing bad questions at Facebook

gnatRelated: Avoid tweeting bad questions Sharing questions by Stack Exchange FB account is probably automated, but shouldn't it avoid sharing questions with close votes? Presented annually to the author of the outstanding doctoral dissertation in the area of Programming Languages. The award includes a prize of $1,000. The winner can choose to receive the award at ICFP, OOPSLA, POPL, or PLDI. I guess it is fairly obvious why professors should propose their students (the deadline is January 4th 2015). Newly minted PhD should, for similar reasons, make sure thei

Q: What's the "official" explanation for Harry's (and everyone else's) absence from muggle school?

LetharionSo a bunch of kids all of a sudden "go missing" from school. Harry Potter having attended school for a couple of years before starting at Hogwarts, one semester just doesn't show up. How is this solved? What do parents say when a school teacher calls and wonders where their pupil is? I assume ...
