@semicolon The more things you make polymorphic, the worse the problem becomes, as you allow them to interact with each other and give the compiler more and more leeway to choose unexpected instantiations of the types. For this reason it is nice to occasionally have terms with very concrete types, to the point that many professional Haskell programmers will write explicitly monomorphized versions of otherwise polymorphic terms with trivial one-token definitions; e.g. mapMaybe :: (a -> b) -> Maybe a -> Maybe b; mapMaybe = fmap or similar. — Daniel Wagner just now
